The Art of Keeping It Real

Smack Water, a name that resonates deeply within his community, was born and raised in Houston, Texas. His journey from the streets to the big screen has been anything but ordinary, and he shares his story with a rawness and humility that reflects the lessons he’s learned throughout his life. Smackwater credits his father for the nickname, a moniker that was passed down to him due to their striking resemblance and his father’s reputation on the streets. From the moment he became known as Smackwater, it seemed as if his destiny was being shaped, though he didn’t know exactly where it would lead. What began as a name tied to his father’s legacy evolved into something bigger as Smackwater would eventually carve his own path in the entertainment world.

Although Smackwater is now a multifaceted figure in the entertainment industry, acting wasn’t always his dream. He says that his entry into the world of film came as a surprise, stemming not from a desire for fame, but from a chance encounter on social media. He explains that while people had been encouraging him to pursue acting for some time, he hadn’t been interested in stepping into the limelight of Hollywood. What he didn’t realize at the time was how social media would serve as a catalyst for his career. It was through the platform that Smackwater started gaining attention. As he became increasingly popular online, his presence caught the eye of filmmakers who wanted him to be part of their projects.

His first major movie role came in 2021 in Day 2 Day, a project he worked on with his friend Lil Duce. The experience was a turning point for Smackwater, as he would soon realize just how much his natural charisma and authenticity translated into acting. He recounts meeting two brothers on set during a video shoot. After some initial introductions, the brothers looked up Smackwater’s content on social media and were impressed by what they saw. They were in the midst of making their own movie and wanted Smackwater to join their project. This movie, Fight Boy, would go on to be released on Tubi, and it marked the beginning of Smackwater’s film career. He recalls the moment he realized just how serious the film industry was. On set, he was surrounded by trained actors, many of whom were surprised to learn that Smackwater was relatively new to acting. Despite this, Smackwater’s natural talent and ability to improvise quickly shone through. Acting, it seemed, came to him as effortlessly as breathing.

Though his acting career was taking off, Smackwater’s first love was always hip-hop. He has long been passionate about rap and the way it allows him to express himself. He had dreamed of becoming one of the greatest rappers in the world. However,

as time passed, Smackwater admits that his drive for the rap game began to fade. “I haven’t put out an album in over two years,” he shares. “I don’t have that push and thrive for the rap game that I had when I was younger.” This sense of dwindling passion didn’t erase the deep connection Smackwater has to hip-hop. He says that rapping has always been a form of therapy for him, and even when he didn’t feel motivated to pursue it professionally, he would continue to write and create for his own personal healing.

Smackwater also reflects on the highs and lows of his journey. Life hasn’t always been easy, and his path has been marked by struggles and obstacles. “Looking back, there were a lot of highs and lows, but there were more lows than highs,” he admits. Despite the challenges, Smackwater feels grateful for the lessons these experiences have taught him. “I’ve learned a lot through that journey, and that’s made me the man I am today,” he says. He also acknowledges that even the smallest changes in life can have a profound impact. These moments of reflec-

tion have shaped his mindset and approach to his career and personal life.

One of the most significant moments for Smackwater came when he saw himself on the big screen for the first time. The premiere of Fight Boy in Houston was a proud moment for him, made even more meaningful by the presence of his daughter. Smackwater recalls how, throughout her childhood, his daughter had seen him go through many struggles. To see him now, having turned his life around and achieving something positive, was a powerful moment for both of them. Smackwater is particularly proud that his daughter could witness him doing something good with his life, something he believes will leave a lasting impression on her.

Even though Smackwater’s entry into the entertainment industry was more accidental than planned, he’s learned to embrace the opportunities it has brought him. Social media, he says, was his introduction to the public eye. It was never meant to be a platform for fame, but rather a way to occupy his time when he was recovering from a difficult chapter of his life. Having just come home from the penitentiary, he began using his phone and talking on his porch as a way to pass the time and clear his mind. Little did he know that his online presence would eventually lead to a career in acting, something he never imagined for himself. For Smackwater, social media was a form of therapy, a means of expressing himself in a world where he had little to lose. When asked what advice he would give to young people aspiring to enter the entertainment industry, Smackwater emphasizes the importance of consistency. He advises, “Whatever it is that you choose to do, just stay consistent and do it every day. If you do it every day, eventually somebody is going to notice you.” He reflects on his own rise to fame, acknowledging that while his journey may have been unconventional, it has shown him the power of persistence and dedication. Smackwater also urges people not to overlook others who may not yet have achieved the success they desire. “You are overlooking the dedication, love, and passion that a person puts into their work,” he says. “One day, they will make it to the finish line, and you’ll be trying to catch up with them.”

Smackwater’s family legacy is another important part of his story. He speaks with pride about his family’s achievements, especially his grandmother, Jackie, and his grandfather, who won a Grammy in 1955. He says that his family has always been well-known and well-loved, and that their fame in the streets of Houston has shaped his identity. However, despite his family’s legacy and his own rising fame, Smackwater remains humble. He understands that being well-known in his community comes with its challenges. Sometimes, when he’s out in public, people can overstep boundaries due to the excitement of seeing him. He tries to stay cordial and approachable, always mindful of how others perceive him. “I’m just a human being just like the next person,” he says. “But it comes along with the territory.”

Smackwater’s humility shines through in his approach to fame. He believes that it’s the people who give you your power, and that maintaining a sense of humility is key. “You never want to make yourself king,” he says. “If you do, you’re going to get killed. But if the people make you king, it’s less likely they will turn on you.” His focus remains on the people who support him, and he continues to work hard to provide value and entertainment to his audience. In fact, he is currently working on several projects, including Mobil Barbershop, where he not only acts but also contributes to the soundtrack and helps co-direct. He’s also gearing up for the release of Double Cup in 2025 and collaborating with Michael Sterling on new ventures.

Smackwater’s recent appearance on Wild ‘N Out in Houston, where he shared the stage with Nick Cannon, was another milestone in his career. He admires Cannon for his business acumen and longevity in the industry, noting that Cannon’s wisdom and experience allowed him to be a part of something special. For Smackwater, it was a chance to learn from someone who’s been in the business since he was 14 years old. The collaboration also served as a reminder of how important it is to remain grounded and never forget where you come from.

Looking ahead, Smackwater is focused on continuing his work and sharing his story with the world. He believes in the power of hard work, dedication, and the importance of supporting others along the way. In his eyes, success is not just about reaching the top; it’s about how you get there and the people you bring with you. “You never know who’s going to be the next big thing,” he says, urging others not to discount anyone based on their current status. “Sometimes people just see people for where they are at that moment.” Smackwater is a testament to the idea that with perseverance and the right mindset, anyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve greatness, no matter where they come from.

Athlete, Leader, and Mentor

Juju Oguer, a Senior at Lakeview Centennial High School in Garland, Texas, is a remarkable young woman with a passion for sports, academics, and helping others. She is an outstanding member of the track, and powerlifting teams at her school, excelling in both areas. Not only does she shine on the field and in the gym, but she is also dedicated to her community, leadership, and academics. Juju is the Class of 2025 president and ranks in the top 7% of her class. She is also involved in the YES mentor program at Lakeview Centennial High School, where she mentors underclassmen and offers support to students in need of someone to talk to. This demonstrates her commitment to uplifting others and giving back to her school community.

In addition to her academic and athletic accomplishments, Juju is also involved in pageantry. She competed in the Miss Juneteenth Rowlett pageant in June 2024 and earned first runner-up. Juju is excited about the future and the opportunities to grow both personally and professionally through her pageantry experiences.

When it comes to her athletic pursuits, Juju is particularly passionate about volleyball, stating that if she had to choose just one sport, volleyball would be her top pick. She credits volleyball with building her confidence, teaching her how to compete at the highest level, and instilling a sense of discipline that translates to her other sports and endeavors. Juju’s volleyball journey continues through her involvement in the club team Untouchables EPA in Plano, Texas. Additionally, she is cur-

rently competing in powerlifting, a sport she was introduced to by the football coach. Her impressive powerlifting feats include a squat of 375 pounds, a bench press of 190 pounds, and a deadlift of 375 pounds. She is working towards increasing her squat to 400 pounds and her bench press to 200 pounds. Her dedication to powerlifting has paid off, as she has won first place at every meet she has participated in so far.

Juju’s track career also began in her freshman year, initially to stay in shape for volleyball. She competes in the 100 and 200 meters but is expanding her skill set this year by taking on the high jump as well. Her dedication to excelling in multiple sports while maintaining strong academic performance reflects her commitment to personal growth and discipline. Juju believes that the discipline she has developed through sports, mentoring, and academics will serve her well in the future.

One of the qualities that stands out about Juju is her genuine desire to help others. Through the YES mentor program at her school, she has been able to provide a listening ear and offer support to students who may be going through difficult times. She feels a deep sense of fulfillment in knowing that she can be there for others, providing encouragement and guidance. Juju views this as a gift from God and is committed to helping as many people as she can. Her natural ability to connect with others, offer advice, and provide emotional support is a testament to her strong character and compassion.

Juju’s involvement in the Miss Juneteenth Rowlett pageant came through her volleyball coach, Michelle Walker, who is also a pageant director. After being asked to participate, Juju quickly dove into training and prepared for the competition. Her first pageant was an incredible experience, and despite being one of eight competitors, she earned the title of first runner-up. This accomplishment was a significant moment for Juju, and she plans to compete again in the future. Pageantry has opened new doors for Juju, offering her the opportunity to develop confidence, poise, and public speaking skills. Despite the numerous commitments she juggles, Juju places a strong emphasis on time management and discipline. She understands that balancing schoolwork, sports, mentoring, and a job is challenging, but she believes that overcoming these challenges now will prepare her for the future. Juju credits her success to her strong sense of discipline, which helps her stay focused and accomplish her goals. She also acknowledges the importance of staying connected to God, as she believes that He provides her with the motivation, strength, and focus necessary to excel. Juju sees God as the source of her drive and discipline, and she remains committed to her faith as she navigates her many responsibilities.

Juju’s future aspirations are equally impressive. She plans to attend either the University of Houston or the University of Texas at Austin to study political science with the goal of becoming a lawyer. Juju is determined to continue her education beyond her undergraduate degree, pursuing a master’s degree and eventually taking over her father’s law firm. She dreams of one day running her own law firm, where she can make a meaningful impact on her community and advocate for justice.

In addition to her academic and career goals, Juju has a deep philosophical outlook on life. She believes that young people, like herself, are at the beginning of a journey toward freedom. While many people her age feel restricted by the limitations placed on them, Juju sees this time as an opportunity to build character, develop discipline, and grow into adulthood. She views this process as a gradual building of freedom, where each decision and each challenge contributes to her personal growth. Her relationship with God is central to this process, as she believes that having faith and clarity from Him provides the strength to navigate life’s obstacles and stay focused on the bigger picture.

Juju’s message to others is clear: stay focused, don’t get distracted, and always believe in yourself. She emphasizes that faith, hard work, and perseverance are key to achieving success, and she encourages others to remain disciplined in their pursuit of their dreams. Juju’s story is one of determination, faith, and dedication, and she is well on her way to achieving great things in her future. With her drive, talent, and unwavering belief in herself, there is no doubt that Juju will continue to accomplish incredible feats in the years to come.

Musical Journey

Dexter Martin-Moffett, a gifted musician and community advocate, hails from the small town of Columbia, Louisiana, located 30 miles south of Monroe. Her passion for music started early, and she has developed into an accomplished artist with a voice that most describes as “angelic.” Dexter’s musical journey was inspired by her family, particularly her mother, who sang in the senior choir at The Brownsville Baptist Church, and her older sister, Mrs. Betty Robinson, who not only led a youth choir but also served as their musician. Dexter fondly remembers accompanying her mother to choir rehearsals when she was just eight years old. It was during this time that she developed a profound love for music and a desire to learn to play instruments like the piano and organ. She was especially drawn to the piano, captivated by its sound and the way it resonated with her soul. These early influences from her family set the stage for her lifelong dedication to music.

When Dexter entered the sixth grade, she joined the school band, where she was introduced to the flute, an instrument that she would come to love. Under the guidance of Mr. Ennis King, the director of the Caldwell Parish Junior High Band, Dexter flourished. She fondly remembers Mr. King as the best band director the school ever had, and his mentorship played a crucial role in her musical development. Dexter chose the flute because she loved the instrument’s high-pitched sound, which complemented her soprano voice. Her dedication and talent were evident from the start, as she earned the coveted position of first chair flute, a role she held throughout high school. She even earned the prestigious John Philip Sousa Award, the highest musical honor that could be bestowed upon a Highschool music student, a recognition she shares with her late sister, Crystal Gail Martin Williams, who also received that same award. This was just the beginning of Dexter’s musical accomplishments.

Throughout high school and into college, Dexter continued to play the flute, earning recognition as first chair Flutist throughout her academic years. At Grambling State University, she expanded her musical horizons by performing in various ensembles, including the jazz band, symphonic band, and orchestra. She also played the violin for a brief period, adding another string to her already impressive musical repertoire. Dexter majored in music education, laying the foundation for her future work as a teacher and mentor to young musicians. After graduating, Dexter moved to Dallas, Texas, where she lived for fifteen years. Despite her time away, she never lost her connection to Columbia, and eventually returned to her hometown, where she continues to be a source of inspiration and leadership in the community.

One of Dexter’s most significant contributions to her community has been her work with youth. In 1988, she founded the Caldwell Community Youth Choir, a testament to her passion for working with young people and fostering their musical talents. She loves working with youth because they are eager to learn, and she finds great joy in seeing young people come together to praise God with their voices. Dexter is in the process of recreating the choir, but this time with a broader vision. She plans to rename it the Caldwell Parish Community Youth and Young Adult Choir to make it inclusive of everyone in the parish, not just those in the Columbia area. Dexter is determined to break down the barriers that divide the community, regardless of race or background, and create a space where everyone is welcome. Her goal is to unite the community through music, helping people to look beyond their differences and work together to bring something positive to Caldwell Parish.

Dexter is a firm believer in the power of faith and action. She often says, “Faith without works is dead,” emphasizing that while faith is essential, it is the work you put in that brings your dreams to life. Dexter has lived by this principle throughout her life, always taking proactive steps to achieve her goals and inspire others to do the same. She encourages others to step out in faith and pursue their dreams with determination, saying that simply wishing for success will not make it happen. Dexter believes that music has the power to transform lives, providing both a source of joy and a means of sustaining oneself through the challenges of life. She reflects on her own journey, saying that music has taken her far and continues to be the driving force in her life. From the age of six, when she first began her musical journey, to today, Dexter remains committed to the path that God instilled in her. She continues to walk that walk with passion, faith, and a desire to make a positive impact on the world around her.

Fitness Trainer, Educator, Role Model

Teach One,” with a focus on mentorship, leadership, and community service. The group aims to create lasting impacts by guiding young people in the right direction, teaching them valuable life skills, and providing positive role models who lead by example. Carl Wesley, one of the members of the Salt & Pepper Gang, is a perfect example of this mission. With his background in sports, business, and education, he brings a unique perspective to the group and is deeply invested in making a difference in the lives of young people. His transition from a business owner as a personal trainer to becoming a teacher speaks volumes about his dedication to growth and the well-being of those around him.

Carl’s journey is a reflection of his belief in destiny and living with purpose. His transition from a personal trainer, a profession that lacked the consistency and benefits he desired, to teaching first grade, was fueled by his desire to make a more significant impact on his community. In his own words, being a business owner didn’t provide him with the stability or retirement security he needed. “As a personal trainer, if you lost a client, you had to go find another one to make sure the money kept coming in,” he recalls. This lack of job security motivated him to pivot into education, a field where he could provide stability for himself and his family while also contributing to the development of future generations.

Carl is passionate about his role as an educator, and it shows in the way he speaks about his work. He is driven by the belief that he has a responsibility to give back to the community. As a teacher, he finds himself particularly triggered by the struggles of the younger generation, especially those who look like him and are involved in activities that are detrimental to their well-being. His experiences with the Salt & Pepper Gang have further reinforced his commitment to serving as a positive influence on young people. The group’s initiatives, such as the Kids and Cops program, aim to build trust between children and law enforcement while showing young boys how to present themselves with pride and confidence. Carl believes that by providing mentorship, they can help guide the youth toward better paths and away from negative influences.

The Salt & Pepper Gang is much more than just a group of well-dressed men. They are a collective of individuals who see themselves as leaders and mentors, striving to positively impact the community by providing guidance, support, and inspiration. Carl, along with his fellow members, takes pride in their role as mentors, teaching young people the importance of character, respect, and self-worth. He shares that his first experience with the group was a profound one—being surrounded by men who not only shared his values but also embodied the type of man he wanted to be. He acknowledges that

finding like-minded individuals who are both positive and empowering can be difficult, but being a part of the Salt & Pepper Gang has given him the sense of belonging and purpose that he had been searching for.

Carl’s life is a delicate balance between his personal and professional roles, and he embraces this fluidity. He doesn’t need to consciously separate his personal life from his business life because he is naturally adaptable. “I understand my position wherever I am, and I become a chameleon to the situation,” he explains. This ability to blend seamlessly into various environments reflects his understanding of his responsibilities, both as a member of the Salt & Pepper Gang and as a teacher. He is always aware of the influence he has on others and strives to lead by example, showing those around him the importance of integrity, humility, and self-respect.

One of the most rewarding aspects of being involved with the Salt & Pepper Gang is the sense of recognition and appreciation Carl feels when he and the other members are out in public. He recalls times when he walked into a restaurant, only to be greeted by people holding up their phones to record him and his colleagues or asking for autographs. While this level of attention can make him feel like a celebrity, Carl remains grounded and grateful for the support and admiration. He describes it as a humbling experience that serves as a reminder of the positive impact they are making in the community.

The Salt & Pepper Gang’s community efforts are varied and impactful, and Carl is proud to be a part of them. In addition to their work with the Salvation Army during the holidays and their mentorship programs, they also engage in charitable activities such as visiting retirement homes, giving flowers to residents, and attending birthday parties for the elderly. These small acts of kindness are a testament to the group’s commitment to spreading love, respect, and positivity to all generations. The group’s outreach efforts aim to build stronger communities by promoting unity and understanding across different age groups, fostering a sense of connection and support that transcends generational divides.

Charity Basketball Tournment

On Monday, March 17, 2025, Will Aiyeojenku, owner of Fusion Vibes in Richardson, Texas, teamed up with three other prominent restaurant owners from the DFW area to host a charity basketball tournament aimed at raising funds for underprivileged kids. This first annual event took place at Paul Quinn College’s gymnasium, with proceeds benefiting the basketball program and Drive Nation. The event was a collaborative effort by Mitch, co-owner of Krave-Haven in Dallas, Erik Grayson, co-owner of Fivee Bistro & Bar, and E.A., owner of Xperience & Lounge. The community turnout was overwhelming, with many from the DFW area coming out to support this noble cause. Alywojwnku expressed excitement for future events, stating that they are committed to organizing more initiatives to give back to the youth. The tournament not only highlighted the power of community but also set a foundation for future charitable endeavors.

Educator

JoMeka Gray was born and reared in Corey, Louisiana, where her journey to becoming a dedicated educator began. After graduating from high school, JoMeka made the decision to pursue higher education at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. Initially, she majored in sociology, but over time, she realized that her true passion lay in a different direction. She switched her focus to General Liberal Arts and ultimately earned her degree. With a strong desire to continue learning and growing, JoMeka returned to school to pursue her master’s degree, with plans to one day open a juvenile home for children in need of support. Unfortunately, life took her in a different direction, and her plans did not unfold as she had originally envisioned.

JoMeka credits her parents as her first teachers, instilling in her a love of learning and the values that would shape her future career. After completing her studies, she took a position as a kindergarten teacher with Temple ISD in Temple, Texas. When asked why she chose to teach kindergarten, JoMeka explained that she believes it is one of the most important grades in a child’s educational journey. She feels that kindergarten serves as the foundation for sparking children’s interest in learning, especially in a state like Texas, where not all children are required to attend kindergarten. Many children who come into kindergarten without a strong foundation from pre-K are already behind, and JoMeka understands the critical role kindergarten plays in closing those gaps.

In Texas, many children enter kindergarten without the skills necessary to succeed because they skipped pre-K or did not have access to early childhood education. JoMeka advocates for increasing access to pre-elementary education and believes that once children fall behind, it is incredibly difficult for them to catch up. She also notes that since the pandemic, more parents have chosen to send their children directly to first grade, bypassing kindergarten altogether. Unfortunately, some of these children are not prepared for the demands of first grade, with some not even being able to write their own names. JoMeka sees this as a critical issue, as early childhood education lays the foundation for academic success throughout a child’s entire educational career. JoMeka’s dedication to her students and her profession was recently recognized when she was named the 2025 Region 12 Elementary Teacher of the Year out of 77 school districts in the 12-county education region.

Reflecting on this honor, JoMeka expressed that it was humbling, especially considering where she came from. She sees her achievement as an opportunity to show her students what hard work and dedication can accomplish. Her recognition is not only a personal triumph but also a source of inspiration for her colleagues, as it shows that someone is advocating for them and that, together, they can push through challenges in their profession.

In addition to her work in the classroom, JoMeka is actively involved in several committees that focus on improving education at both the local and state levels. She serves on two committees for her school district. One committee focuses on high-quality structural materials, and JoMeka played an instrumental role in testing materials for House Bill 1605. The other committee is responsible for determining the needs of each school in the district by working closely with community members. JoMeka is also active at the state level, serving on two committees. She is a member of the advocacy group Teach Plus and holds the position of senior fellow. As a senior fellow, JoMeka leads a group of teachers across Texas, helping them to advocate for educational policy and practices that benefit both students and educators. Furthermore, JoMeka serves on a committee that advocates for teacher retention, helping to ensure that educators are supported and able to thrive in their careers, as teaching is not a profession suited for everyone.

On a national level, JoMeka is part of a small team of five people who work with the National Board of Certification. This team helps to shape the standards for teacher certification across the United States. In particular, JoMeka has been involved in rewriting the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), the standards on which the state’s STAAR tests are based. She was able to contribute to removing outdated standards and replacing them with new, more relevant ones. These changes will also have an impact on education in Louisiana, as new standards will be implemented there as well.

Despite her busy professional life, JoMeka always prioritizes her family. She credits them with providing the support and encouragement she needed to step out on faith and move to Texas to pursue her career. JoMeka reflects on a pivotal conversation with her parents that gave her the courage to leave her home state and venture into new opportunities. For JoMeka, home will always be a place of refuge—a place to return to if things don’t go as planned. Her story is a testament to the power of faith, hard work, and the importance of having a support system that believes in you.

JoMeka’s journey shows that success is not defined by one’s starting point but by the determination to push forward and make a difference. Her work as a teacher, advocate, and leader continues to impact the lives of students, teachers, and communities, and she remains dedicated to ensuring that all children receive the education and opportunities they deserve.

Amazing Grace

Grace Spencer, a senior at Lincoln High School in Dallas, Texas, is not just a standout on the basketball court, but also a student who values discipline and dedication in every aspect of her life. Born and raised in Texas, Grace plays for the school’s varsity basketball team as a shooting guard (SG) and small forward (SF), proudly wearing the number 3 jersey. From a young age, Grace fell in love with basketball, dedicating herself to the sport and refining her skills over the years. Her commitment to the game is matched by her focus on academics, with reading being her favorite subject. She finds it easy because it requires simply remembering the information about the story, a skill she has honed over time. Grace emphasizes the importance of staying on top of schoolwork, urging her peers to manage their time wisely and avoid falling into the trap of procrastination. According to Grace, slacking off can quickly lead to falling behind, and students need to stay focused to maintain their grades while excelling in sports. She understands that colleges are looking for well-rounded individuals—those who can perform on the field and in the classroom. Without good grades, it’s difficult to advance in athletics, and that’s why she stresses the importance of balancing both. Grace also recognizes that the journey to success isn’t easy, which is why she places her trust in God. She believes that challenges are inevitable but that faith and perseverance will always lead to better outcomes. With unwavering support from her family and teammates, Grace pushes through moments of exhaustion, knowing she’s not just playing for herself but also setting an example for others. As a senior, she wants to show her younger teammates that no matter how difficult the journey gets, with faith, focus, and determination, it’s always possible to keep going.

Julius “JuJu” Spencer

Julius “JuJu” Spencer, a senior at Lakeview Centennial High School, he has been playing football since he was four years old, and over the years, his passion for the game has only grown. He plays as a receiver for his high school team and credits his love for the sport to when he was twelve, marking the age when he truly fell in love with football. On December 4, 2024, JuJu signed a full scholarship to Texas State University, a decision that he says felt like a natural fit. He was drawn to Texas State because it felt like home, offering a comfortable environment that made him feel at ease. At Texas State, JuJu plans to major in sports marketing, a field he is passionate about because of his deep love for football. He believes his enthusiasm for the sport will make it easier to enjoy his job, motivating him to wake up every day excited for work. What JuJu loves most about football is the strong sense of camaraderie and the bond he shares with his teammates, likening it to a family. He emphasizes the importance of connecting with others and building relationships, especially when playing at a high level where it feels like a brotherhood. JuJu also stresses the importance of education, advising others never to be afraid to ask for help, especially in areas where they may struggle. For him, school is just as important as sports because, without education, there would be no opportunity to play. He encourages his peers to never quit, as it’s all about perseverance and determination. JuJu credits his faith in God and the support from his family for helping him stay motivated and push through challenges. He strives to be the best at what he does, driven by the desire to avoid regrets in the future, knowing that if he doesn’t push himself now, he may never reach his full potential.

Dallas Hip-Hop Legend

Pikahsso Verbadelyck, a native of Dallas, Texas, is a force to be reckoned with in the world of hip-hop, standing out as a true artist and cultural figure. His journey into music is not just a career path but a passion that runs deep, fueled by a love for the craft and an undeniable connection to his roots. What sets Pikahsso apart from others in the music industry is his unique approach to songwriting and performing. His sound is a blend of historical knowledge, raw passion, and an unwavering dedication to pushing boundaries. He is not just a musician; he is a historian of music, taking pride in his vast understanding of song structure, delivery, and the legacies of the artists who paved the way for him.

From an early age, Pikahsso was immersed in a world that encouraged creativity and expression. He credits much of his musical journey to his mother, who was a Muslim and an influential figure in his life. At the age of fourteen, she took him to Washington, D.C., where she attended a speech by A Worth the Homicide, a figure whose words resonated deeply with the young Pikahsso. It was during this trip that he had a life-changing encounter with a beatboxer on the streets of D.C. Witnessing this man’s ability to make incredible sounds with just his mouth sparked something within Pikahsso. He had seen beatboxing on television but never experienced it firsthand. Intrigued, he asked the man if he could teach him how to make those sounds, and Pikahsso quickly caught on. That moment marked the beginning of his journey into beatboxing, a skill he would master and incorporate into his music.

Pikahsso’s mother played a pivotal role in his musical development, as she was the one who introduced him to hip-hop and encouraged him to pursue rapping. She believed in him when no one else did, a sentiment that deeply resonated with Pikahsso. His mother’s unwavering support was a constant source of inspiration and motivation. In his early years, before gaining recognition in the local scene, Pikahsso was determined to carve out his own space in the world of hip-hop. He worked tirelessly to develop his craft, paying homage to the artists who influenced him while ensuring his music remained authentic to who he was. Today, Pikahsso is considered a legend in the Dallas music scene, an honor he embraces with humility. Initially, when people began calling him a legend, he was confused, thinking they were implying that he was old. However, over time, he has come to understand the true meaning of being a legend – it is about the impact you make, the legacy you leave, and the respect you earn from your peers.

His music is what truly sets him apart from other artists. While many hip-hop artists stick to familiar sounds and structures, Pikahsso constantly experiments with his music, blending funk,

soul, and hip-hop into something entirely new and groundbreaking. He describes his approach as experimental, and that is evident in every track he creates. He believes in taking risks, pushing the envelope, and creating music that is not just for the moment but for the ages. Currently, Pikahsso is working on an album titled South Dallas Griot, a project that has been years in the making. The album is produced by the late Big Hub, who passed away two years ago, and his longtime friend Soul Fool. For Pikahsso, this album is a labor of love, and he is committed to ensuring that it reaches the world. He explains that the title Griot refers to a West African storyteller, someone who preserves the history of their people and culture through oral tradition. Pikahsso is taking on this role from a South Dallas perspective, sharing stories of his community, his experiences, and his journey through life.

In 2006, Pikahsso was part of a hip-hop group called PPT, along with Picnic and Tahiti. This group achieved significant recognition when they created the theme song for the Dallas Mavericks, a major milestone in Pikahsso’s career. The success of that project was monumental, and Pikahsso is quick to give credit to those who helped make it happen, including Allen Cohen, Mike Orren, and Mark Cuban. He reflects on this achievement as one of the defining moments in his musical journey, as it opened doors and introduced his music to a wider audience.

When asked about his aspirations for his music, Pikahsso’s response is straightforward. He wants people to understand the depth of his craft. His music is not just about catchy beats or popular trends; it is about careful, thoughtful lyricism. Pikahsso identifies himself as a lyricist – not just any lyricist, but a “lyrical lyricist,” as he puts it. He takes pride in his ability to manipulate words and vocal delivery in ways that captivate and engage listeners. He wants his audience to appreciate the effort, skill, and thought that goes into every track he releases. His music is more than just sound; it is a message, a reflection of his life and his community. For Pikahsso, lyrics are paramount, and he believes that Dallas is home to many great lyricists who often go overlooked in the broader music industry. He cites influential Dallas artists such as Erykah Badu, D.O.C., Cole Chris, and Baby G, all of whom have shaped the city’s rich musical legacy.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Pikahsso has a deep sense of self-reflection, which he attributes to his personal growth over the years. He mentions attending the Columbia School of Broadcasting in Washington, D.C., but admits that he didn’t take his education as seriously as he should have at the time. He now looks back with a sense of regret, wishing he had taken

Randolph Gilbert

Randolph Gilbert was born and reared in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, as the oldest child in his family. From a young age, he found himself fascinated by the inner workings of cars, often spending his Saturday mornings watching his father and cousins work on vehicles. Although it started as an innocent curiosity, Randolph soon realized that he wanted to learn how to fix cars just like they did. His father, recognizing his son’s interest, gave him some basic lessons, teaching him how to change the oil and tires, but he also encouraged Randolph to take a more formal approach to learning the trade. “If you really want to learn how to work on cars, you need to go to school for it,” his dad said. Heeding his father’s advice, Randolph enrolled in vocational school to learn more about the automotive industry.

However, after diving deeper into the technicalities of car repairs, Randolph came to the realization that working on cars wasn’t his true passion. While he still found the automotive world fascinating, his interests lay elsewhere within the industry. He had a strong desire to be involved in the automotive business in a different way. Although he didn’t have a clear direction at that point, his passion for the field remained intact, and he knew he had to explore other avenues.

In 1999, Randolph made a life-altering decision. He moved to Dallas, Texas, to be closer to his mother, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. As the oldest child in the family, Randolph felt it was his responsibility to be by her side during this challenging time. Tragically, his mother passed away in 2000, leaving Randolph with a deep sense of loss. Despite the hardship, he decided to stay in Dallas and make it his new home. This move, though born out of personal necessity, ultimately led Randolph to the career path that he would walk for the next 25 years.

Shortly after his mother’s passing, Randolph began looking for work and quickly found a job at O’Reilly Auto Parts. He started out at the parts counter, where he assisted customers in finding the right parts for their vehicles. Randolph’s work ethic and eagerness to learn did not go unnoticed. Under the guidance of Juston Garza, the store manager at the time, Randolph was promoted to assistant manager just three weeks into his new job. This new position opened his eyes to the business side of the automotive industry, and he quickly learned the intricacies of managing a store and interacting with customers on a deeper level.

A year later, O’Reilly Auto Parts opened a new store, and Randolph was given the opportunity to be a part of it. He jumped at the chance, excited to take on a new challenge. Just six

months after that, the company opened another store in Plano, Texas, and Randolph was once again promoted. This time, he became the assistant manager and commercial manager of the Plano location. Over the years, Randolph continued to grow with the company, learning new skills and gaining experience. He worked at the Plano location for four years before a new opportunity arose.

The company offered him a promotion to become an outside salesman, and this was the turning point in Randolph’s career. He spent just one day in the field before he knew he had found his true calling. He loved being on the move, meeting new people, and building relationships with customers. The work was dynamic and fast-paced, and he enjoyed the challenges that came with it. Randolph quickly became known for his dedication to customer service, and he found great fulfillment in helping others.

Now, 25 years later, Randolph has worked his way up to the position of regional manager, overseeing 54 stores across the area. His responsibilities now include managing a large region that stretches from Gainesville, Texas, to Oklahoma, and even covers parts of Arkansas, Texarkana, Taylor, Ennis, Texas, and several smaller towns in between. The role has provided Randolph with the opportunity to travel extensively, and he’s learned how to manage operations across a diverse and expansive area. Despite his success, Randolph never forgets the lessons he learned early on in his career, and he remains passionate about helping others.

Throughout his journey, Randolph has learned that traditional education and a 9-to-5 job are not the only paths to success. He wishes someone had told him earlier in life that there are many ways to build a future beyond the standard model. “There are so many avenues you can take for yourself,” he says, “like starting your own business, investing in the stock market to understand how money is made, and becoming an entrepreneur.” If he could go back and speak to his younger self, Randolph would encourage him to take more risks and not limit himself to a single path. He believes that many people get caught in a box, thinking that there’s only one way to succeed. However, Randolph emphasizes that life offers endless possibilities, and it’s important to explore them all.

As a person of color, Randolph has also observed some challenges in the automotive industry. He points out that while people of color are well-represented in entry-level positions, the higher levels of management are still predominantly occupied by individuals from different backgrounds. “In meetings, I’m often the only person of color,” he says, highlighting the stark racial divide within the industry. He believes that there is a significant opportunity for people of color to step into leadership roles, and he would like to see more individuals from diverse backgrounds taking on positions such as store manager and higher.

Randolph’s journey to success has not been easy, but he is proud of the hard work that has gotten him where he is today. When asked how it feels to be the only person of color in a room full of executives, Randolph responds with confidence. “I worked ten times harder than my counterparts to get into that room, so I know I’m qualified,” he explains. Despite the challenges, he feels a deep sense of pride in breaking through barriers and making his way to the top. His journey is a testament to perseverance and the power of determination.

In conclusion, Randolph Gilbert’s story is one of resilience, growth, and unwavering commitment. His journey from a young boy fascinated by cars to a successful regional manager in the automotive industry is a powerful reminder of the importance of following one’s passion, taking risks, and breaking down barriers. As he looks to the future, Randolph is determined to inspire the next generation of leaders, particularly people of color, to step into rooms where they’ve traditionally been underrepresented. He challenges the younger generation to pursue their dreams, seek out opportunities, and never settle for just one path. His story is not just about his personal success, but about opening doors for others to follow.

those opportunities more seriously. However, his biggest regret revolves around his relationship with his mother. Pikahsso reflects on his early 20s as a time of anger and missed opportunities, particularly when it came to expressing love and affection towards his mother. He admits that he didn’t hug her as much as he should have, nor did he take enough pictures with her. In hindsight, he realizes the importance of these small moments and the profound impact they have when someone is no longer around. His relationship with his father was also strained, but he recognizes that the bond with a mother is unique. “Your mom carried you, and that’s where you come from,” Pikahsso says. “You never realize how important your mom is until they are gone.” This realization has shaped his perspective on life and the importance of cherishing the people who truly matter. As Pikahsso reflects on his life, he emphasizes the value of understanding one’s roots and heritage. As he approaches his 50s, he recognizes that many of the people who helped shape him and who were important to him are no longer around. He urges others to take the time to appreciate their roots and the people who have contributed to their growth and development. It is these people, the ones who are there through thick and thin, who help form the foundation of who we are. In the end, Pikahsso’s message is clear: cherish the ones you love, never take life for granted, and always stay true to yourself and your craft. Through his music, his reflections, and his legacy, Pikahsso Verbadelyck continues to leave an indelible mark on the world of hip-hop and beyond.
