Fall fashion gets individual sequins and other reflective adornments. Be as bold as you dare… just remember to stash a few adhesive bandages in your purse.

et ready for the wild side — however tempered by a moody gray attitude. This season, fall fashion breaks the rules and follows a rebel’s yell; then it comes back purring and demure. Expect the unexpected, like feathers teasing out the softer side of leather and spikes getting in the face of conservative tweeds. Confused? You don’t have to be. We’ve navigated the catwalks and picked a dozen ways for you to stand out from the crowd — all very much on trend, supremely wearable and mutable enough to make your own.

Tee time

Yes, it’s true. T-shirts with price tags of $350, or more, are flying off the shelves this season. A staple of casual dressing, the T-shirt has transcended itself and become a fashion icon. Fashionistas love vintage finds, and designers have listened. Look for reproductions of iconic logos, political campaigns or standout concerts — all realized in soft, washed cotton. To up the ante, why not embellish your new tee with safety pins, lace overlays or creatively sliced sections. It’s a perfect match for this season’s love affair with distressed, torn jeans.

Biker chic

If there’s one element that defines the look of fall, it’s leather. The classic biker jacket is back in full force. However, even By hardcore Harley Davidson styles have become lighter TRACI and more tailored than ever before. A proper fit, DUTTON a supple hand, and gor- LUDWIG geous hardware are key to versatility. Invest in a jacket you love, and you’ll wear it with everything. There’s no better way to add chic style to jeans or give feminine dresses an unexpected edge. But why stop there? Leather is also driving the current obsession with skirts, pants and dresses — particularly when fashioned in unusual, colored or quilted leathers. Go for pieces in bold, solid colors, with defined silhouettes and articulated stitching or metal hardware. Just remember to pair leather with softer coordinating separates to find your Zen. Contrast here brings the best balance of energy. A leather skirt and a leather bustier? Too much. But leather trousers and a mohair sweater? Just right! Gray skies

Rainy days or sunshine, this season’s mood plays with a palette of subtle grays. Encompassing the range of all mixed cocktails of black and white, this season’s favorite shade is a true chameleon. Steely grays look crisp and elegant. Smoky grays are soft and romantic. Muddy grays are a tease, as they play at being greens or browns or lilacs. Go for subtle tonal variations expressed through richly textured layers, or exploit the drama of contrast through neutral-based color blocks (i.e. gray, white and black or gray, navy and beige). These combinations work beautifully for everyone and are anything but boring. For classic military looks — one of fall’s perennial passions — gray is the most modern interpretation. Ouch!

Studs and spikes are the embellishment of the moment. Look for them everywhere — and we mean EVERYWHERE. From their origins in the world of street punk, their hard edge lends a distinctive bite to mainstream styles too. Expect to see pointy shards added to basic black, enhancing shoulders, cuffs and shoes. This season, they are also taking a supporting role in accessories like chokers, bracelets and handbags. Man killer? Yes. Lethal? No. To soften the look of spikes, some designers are interspersing these metal teeth and claws with chunky rhinestones, glittery

Deconstructed denim

Everything old is new again — denim included. In addition to tailored designer jeans, distressed jeans have risen to the top of this year’s fashion trends. Outfit by St. Emile, at Gabriella’s En Vogue in Rips, tears, holes, frayed edges, Scarsdale: wool cashmere frida coat with asymmetrical zipper; zac hooded fur knit vest of se- dangling seams, graffiti writing. lected lamb and rabbit fur in greige; soft merino Anything goes. The look is all turtleneck; and mars wool/jersey drawstring about deconstruction and conpant with zipper pocket detail in papaya. fidence. With enough attitude, distressed jeans transcend their sloppiness and look deliberate. The look says, “I’m confident and don’t need perfection to look good. Even in these ‘old jeans,’ I know how to pull it together. I don’t need your approval.” What could be sexier that that? For novices, keep the rest of your look neat when wearing torn jeans. A sleek tank top and a jacket with men’s tailoring are good choices; or if you go for a T-shirt, tuck it in. Complete the look with a ponytail or loose, messy curls — or anything that looks effortless. Courtesy of Gabriella’s En Vogue

Pattern repe at

As a balance to the season’s dominant solids, predominantly gray and black, designers have also embraced repetitive graphic patterns. Tight geometric repeats in retrained color combinations are chic and bold. Go for dresses to avoid adding additional garments, which may be a distraction. Bold jewelry and bags — whose shapes play off the particular geometry of the print — finish the look with style. Pantsuits are another option, albeit a trickier choice. To avoid the wallpaper look of a head-to-toe pattern, choose pantsuits with interesting construction details or distinct tailoring. This way, the overall pattern can read as a “solid” background, and the details can catch the eye instead. Country house

Houndstooth, tweed, tartan and plaid — oh my! Fashion is really fickle. Just when you thought you could be perfectly happy living fearless adventures in an orange leather skirt, along comes a conservative Brit to steal your heart — and bring you back to reality. In addition to the crazy leather minis and ripped jeans in your closet this season, be sure to make space for a few classic pieces. Channel the spirit of the English countryside or an Ivy League campus in the 1940s with prints and silhouettes borrowed from these settings. The silhouettes of men’s suiting pair well with these fabrics. Look for wide-legged pants, cuffed trousers, vests and pantsuits, as well as more overt feminine interpretations, such as A-line skirts and jumpers. Be as conservative as you want with this look, yet add at least one touch of irony or funk. Try white shirts, nubby sweaters, riding boots, tights, alligator belts, leather clutches… and a gold tone pocket watch if you can find one. For a funkier spin, mix up the look with something from the wild side — such as a leather cuff, fishnet tights or peek-a-boo lace. continued on page

Fall cozies up to leather

R

unway fa shion is a runa w a y hit this season with leather pieces that can take you from day to night. Leather perfectly transitions from fall to winter, but it can also be worn just about yearround. A little leather By mini with sandals in Laurie summer evolves into fall worn over leggings with Sullivan over-the-knee boots. Or leather shorts worn with tights. Definitely hot looks this fall! Leather makes its debut this season in new and exciting fabrications, colors and styles — exciting news for retailers and shoppers alike! In addition to pieces in all leather, there’s also pleather, leather’s look-alike sister, for a whole lot less. There are leather and pleather tops accented with peplums, another big look this season. You’ll find leather trim here, there and everywhere on sweaters, dresses, pants, jackets and more. Mixing it up

According to Robin Mizrahi, coowner of Pamela Robbins in Scarsdale, what’s new and exciting about leather this fall is “it’s acceptable and not a luxury. There’s more of it and everyone is on the bandwagon.” She said it’s also about the colors and mixing it with other fabrics. “We’re big fans of leather,” she said. In some respects Mizrahi said that although leather’s been around in seasons past, with leatherwear from year to year “it’s like going to a museum … and noticing something new each time you go.” The store, known for its cutting edge fashion and discovering new and upand-coming designers, is showing what they call leather “inside wear.” That includes leather pants not worn “like you’re a cat burglar, [but] classic and a little slick.” Mizrahi said that leather jackets have always been an acceptable way of wearing leather. This year the perennial motorcycle jacket is back, plus collarless leather jackets which can be worn indoors or out and their popular puffy nylon jackets have been fabricated in leather for fall. And one of Mizrahi’s faves is a jacket made of “the finest lamb.” Leather is everywhere this season, including pieces that Mizrahi said have quilting, a la Chanel quilting. One of their more unique pieces is a leather romper, designed to wear with a top underneath, which Mizrahi likened to a typical English romper. “We have a lot of fine looking dresses that don’t read like it’s leather from afar, dresses with sexy suede, color blocking,” Mizrahi said. “We’re really about pretty and feminine in the shop.” This fashion maven wears leather leggings year-round. them with a linen jacket. The store is selling leather leggings with slim bottoms. “Some don’t even have waistbands — you just slide them on and some have back seams like old-fashioned stockings that are very flattering,” Mizrahi explained. Although Pamela Robbins “has been about neutral colors” and is carrying nude leather, new this year are “all kinds of browns, plums, wine colors, blues, navies — it’s like having the channel switch to HD. It’s a departure.” “Leather is much more out there this year. More people are wearing it,” said Mizrahi. The store is carrying tops with leather, silk with leather, T-shirts with leather sleeves, which makes them more

affordable. And what is Mizrahi’s “must have” for fall? “One of our neat little lambskin jackets,” she enthused. “You can leave it on indoors or [wear] it over something.” But leather pants are also a “must” this season. For Mizrahi, she said it was hard to choose a single piece. “You put leather on, it melts on you,” she said. “It’s not hard anymore.” Back and better than ever

Buyer Lori Land of Churchill’s in Mount Kisco said the leather trend continues this fall, but it’s different than in seasons past. “There’s more of it this year and it doesn’t seem like the trend is

going away. The pieces are timeless and add value to your wardrobe. They’ve become staples in a woman’s closet,” Land said. “Every client in our store has bought a great leather jacket, vest or pants, especially with layering being so huge [this year].” Land said they’ve been selling fall clothes since July, including fitted leather jackets, a lot of sweaters with leather detail — leather piping, leather jeans with five pockets with zippers, pull-up leggings with Lycra that shape to you and mold to the body. She explained that designers are using leather accents as a way to add detail continued on page

to the clothing, including leather trim on shoulders and elbow patches. They’ve paired a studded motorcycle jacket over cocktail dresses — a little funky and unexpected. Designers are using leather accents as a way to add detail to their clothing. Churchill’s offers leather and wool pieces and cashmere sweaters with leather trim. There are even leather accessories like leather cuffs with real diamond embellishments and a wrap bracelet that can be worn with anything with a diamond pendant, which can be taken off. The high-end designers are trying to bring down the cost by using leather, with prices that can range from $800-$1,000, depending on how many diamonds are being used. Land said a leather vest or motorcycle jacket vest “pops an outfit, whether it’s a simple dress — it gives it a little more edge.” Women are also wearing leather jackets instead of blazers. The store even offers fur handbags trimmed in leather. A luxurious leather anorak lined in fur is definitely worth a second look. Land said that if women want to invest in something leather for their wardrobes, she suggests buying a great leather jacket to wear indoors or out that transitions from day to night — a leather jacket that can be worn over jeans, dresses, etc. Land said they start their clients off that way: “Everyone can wear a great leather jacket.” Leather everywhere

Elaine Andriotis, co-owner of Beginnings in Scarsdale and Armonk, said every single piece has leather. She said every company has incorporated leather on jeans, blouses, T-shirts with leather sleeves, dresses, sweaters, cashmere sweaters with leather trim. “You can wear it to black tie [events],” she said. “In the 33 years I’m in business I’ve never seen it like this.” Beginnings, known for its up-tothe-minute fashion, has shirts that are all leather (some have inserts of knit to make it fit better), pants and jeans. For black tie there are slacks in tropical wool with a leather stripe going down the sides instead of the traditional satin that puts a new spin on an old favorite. For those who don’t want to wear real leather, the store carries pleather. “You

That includes everything from a plaid flannel shirt trimmed in leather to denims coated with leather, which are also being shown for men and women in the Armonk store. “It looks like leather,” she said. “Last year it may have been in black and this year it’s color.” Andriotis said she was already seeing it in the city at the end of summer. “Wine is a very huge color for fall as well as gray and black,” Andriotis explained. Beginnings’ customers are buying dresses, silk blouses and tops with leather trim and some with leather sleeves or necklines with leather trim. seasonal club located in North Stamford, Conn. Jeff Gocke, representing the owners of the property, said he doesn’t think people only look their best in the summer, particularly if they continuing exercising during the off season. While Long Ridge Swim and Tennis does not have indoor tennis or swim facilities, there are a number of options available throughout the metropolitan area, Gocke said. “I believe people are maintaining their fitness regimen 12 months of the year,” he said. “Come Labor Day people stop playing outdoor tennis, so now it’s time to play indoors. It does seem to me that summer here for tennis players is Memorial Day to Labor Day.” But for the truly active tennis player, the routine “doesn’t change that much” with a new season. “The competitive nature of league play continues indoors now, whereas up until about five years ago it was predominantly in the summer,” Gocke said. “What has developed is winter league play, with a lot of women who didn’t play an organized sport growing up now playing competitive sports. They’re competing at their ability levels and making social connections too.” Allison Adamiak of Balance Day Spa in White Plains disputes the notion that women might look their best only in the summer. “However, summer is a time of year when most people are more active,” she said. “There are a plethora of outdoor activities and an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables to choose from. Generally, when people take better care of themselves, they do look better.” That said, “summer can be an especially harsh season on the skin,” Ada-

mertime bonus.” Costanzo said the early autumn weather allows for lots of healthy activity. “However, once Halloween comes and goes, the holiday mode starts to quickly set in, and come December, many people are way too busy, swamped, stressed out and unfortunately don’t take the necessary time to exercise and are thus not taking care of themselves properly,” she said. “Thus the influx of new members at your local gym comes Jan. 1.” Calling herself a “big fan of interval training,” Costanzo said it allows a person to focus on all the body parts. “So you’re getting a full body workout in a short amount of time. What’s great about this type of workout is that you can easily take it indoors when the weather turns cold. There’s no fancy equipment needed, just yourself.” One of the best ways to stay in shape, no matter the season, “is to keep challenging the body,” Costanzo said. “If you’ve been doing more endurance exercise over the summer, like running or swimming, a good challenge would then be to do shorter, interval workouts with weights. Or do the opposite: start running outdoors if you’ve been strength training all summer. If you have the proper gear and clothing, running in the cold can be exhilarating. But if you’re dead set against being outdoors in the cold, that’s okay, you can still change it up by doing yoga or Pilates, which can stretch and strengthen the core. Flexibility is one thing I see that many women lack. Changing up your mode of exercise is important in being able to give your body everything it needs to be at its best. Don’t be afraid to try new things and to mix it up.” Long Ridge Swim and Tennis is a

GABRIELLA’S

miak said. “Prolonged exposure to sun, chlorine and air conditioning can all take a visible toll. Skin that has been overwrought will always benefit from a good hydrating facial followed by a tailored home care regimen.” Prevention is “always better than the cure,” she said. “If you truly want to look your very best, then it is important to avoid abusing your skin in the first place. The skin cannot ‘bounce back’ indefinitely — it is unrealistic to believe that a spa treatment or even a medical procedure can 100 percent correct or erase long-term abuse of the body.” Balance Day Spa offers a full range of esthetics services, including facials, waxing, aromatherapy, bronzing, makeup application, tinting and ear candling. “Our Quench facial is always a great choice for severely dehydrated skin,” Adamiak said, adding that the time of year “has very little to do with looking good. Having a tan will not necessarily make your skin look great. Regardless of a woman’s age, healthy skin is goodlooking skin. If you take the time to take care of yourself and your skin, then you will always look your best.” Located in Scarsdale, Salon 421 opened in January 2012. Co-owner with Madaline Bruno, stylist Robert Doherty said that women tend to do more outdoor activities during summer with its longer days and warmer weather. In doing so, skin is tanned and exudes a summer glow. Hair, on the other hand, may have taken on too much sun over the summer, so a treatment such as Brazilian keratin, which lasts from four to six months, will “replenish the hair with keratin, something we are naturally born with,” Doherty said. “In doing so, this creates shine and depletes frizz.” Keeping one’s hair looking its best is “pretty simple, actually,” Doherty said. “By adding multitonal highlights and other hues, you can keep the sun-kissed look year-round. Because our natural color has many different tones when the sun hits it, it gives natural tones. This multitonal highlighting effect creates a most-natural appearance, as if sunkissed.” When asked if there is a point in the year when a woman’s hair color and style shouldn’t still look as if it’s the middle of summer, Doherty said he believes “color should reflect the season. But everyone has her own opinion. Sometimes a subtle change is appropriate, but doesn’t have to be extreme. As long as both color and cut accentuate beauty and confidence, anything is possible.” As a hair care professional with more than 21 years of experience, Doherty said he lives by one rule: “A woman should do what she feels most comfortable with when it comes to her beauty regimen. If she loves the look of sunkissed blond hair, then she should keep it year-round. However, I do recommend to my clients to try new shades with seasons, especially as their skin tones change with the change of weather. Women are often surprised how a few highlights can change their overall look from season to season.”

CELINE

S

ummer was nice this year, but now it’s come to an end. Does that mean you’re going to get out of shape or that your hair or skin will no longer look its best? Let’s hope not! There could be two ways to look at this question, say a number of local experts, including Kim Holzmann-Krolick of Corelab in Katonah. Her business offers what she calls the “only studio in Westchester County to offer the innovative Lagree Fitness workout,” fusing elements of Pilates, strength training and circuit training. It’s just one way to remain in shape all year-round. Holzma nn-K rolick By said her impression is Mary that some clients are returning to her studio Legrand after a short summer break because “when their children go back to school they have more commitment and time for working out,” while “others have too many other activities now that school is back in session. It depends on the person and her situation.” Assuming that a person might be busier now than even this time last month “because kids are in school and you’re more active, you have to stay committed to exercise,” Holzmann-Krolick said. “It might mean setting up a class you have to attend or finding a friend you’ll run with on Tuesday mornings at 6 a.m.” And just because your kids are playing sports, “Just don’t stand on the soccer field sidelines; go for a quick jog,” she said. “There are tons of ways to add exercise into your day, and you don’t necessarily have to work out for an hour. You could do 15 minutes of a high-energy interval routine and repeat the series a couple of times.” The “biggest thing for fitness is having someone else you’re accountable to,” Holzmann-Krolick said. “I’m training for a half Ironman and have a training buddy, if not for whom I might not train if I didn’t feel like running or working out.” Located in Bronxville, Little Black Dress Personal Training, LLC, is an in-home personal training service for women in lower Westchester. Owner Anne Marie Costanzo brings all the necessary equipment, which can include free weights, resistance bands, Bosu balance trainer and other easily transportable equipment, and can work out with clients indoors or outdoors. “Summertime allows everyone to get out and be more active than during any other season,” Costanzo said. “Many of my clients start taking on additional activities, like cycling, tennis, swimming and running. Since the fall holds plenty of 5k or 10k runs, half or full marathons, triathlons, etc., many clients start cross training for their particular event during the summer. With the increase in availability of fresh, local, organic fruits and veggies at local farmers markets, the ability to eat healthier and feel better about oneself is an added sum-

Spa owner and esthetician Allison Adamiak credits much of Balance Day Spa’s success to her delivery of very high quality services and products at reasonable prices. Skincare is by YonKa and essential oils are by Eve Taylor. “The response has been absolutely amazing,” Adamiak said. “Clients have come to love the personalized service and the attention to detail which they receive here.” One needs look no further than the Internet to find a wealth of reviews touting clients’ amazing experiences at Balance Day Spa. One client writes, “I moved back to NYC last year, I work in the city and commute to Westchester to have Allison take care of my spa needs, that is how good Balance Day Spa is!” Another client writes, “An unbelievable find! Makeover: Simple updates to make your old wardrobe pop

R

emember when the fun of going back to school was about the new clothes? We’re not dressing for the first day of school anymore, but as soon as September rolls around, the urge to splurge on fashion is as inevitable as falling leaves and new notebooks. A whole new wardrobe? In our dreams maybe, but a few simple By updates from the seaDEBRA son’s new collections will keep you right on BANERJEE trend and on budget. Leather embellishment on everything is big as are dresses, tunics, leggings, cashmere, lace and color blocking. The color of the season is green. From rich emerald to jade, mossy, forest green and olive drab, there’s a green for everyone. Also strong are navy, burgundy, purple and, all shades of gray. “It’s a great season, I have to say,” said Lynda Piscitelli of Indigo Chic with locations in Hartsdale and Rye Brook. “It’s all really pretty, sophisticated and elegant. Designers have stepped up their game a little bit.” Leggings are still going strong, and at Indigo Chic, a boutique for contemporary clothing and accessories, novelty leggings are hot. “Interesting leggings, whether they have distressed marks or metallic, or plaid, are big this season,” Piscitelli said. “They’re not in your face; they’re subtle, with dark tones. Pair them with a tunic sweater and a pair of boots and you’re all set.” Peplum tops are still in style to wear with slim pants or skirts, Piscitelli said. Cashmere chic

“Get a versatile piece that will go with everything, such as a new chic cardigan, a poncho, or an overcoat. You can buy all of these at MAG Tricotes, in luxurious hand-dyed cashmere,” advised Malvina Guretsky, owner of MAG Tricotes in Scarsdale. (Tricoter is French for knitting, and MAG are Guretsky’s initials.) MAG Tricotes designs dresses, separates, outerwear and shawls made by hand from natural fabrics and yarns. The garments incorporate knitting, crochet, lace crochet, felting and embroidery. “The ‘hot’ colors for fall are emerald and navy blue,” said Guretsky, “a welcome update on basic black, these colors

make a subtle statement while being both classy and chic. “Fashion is not just about a single trend, it’s about style, color, length, fabric, sometimes even a craft, such as crochet or intarsia [a knitting technique using multiple colors]. Both are very trendy now. So if you are comfortable in a certain dress style, just try a new color. If you only wear black, try the new midi-length skirt. And if you feel safe with your colors, try an intarsia sweater. You don’t have to break out of your comfort zone.” It’s psychological

“A sweater changes everything,” said Andrea Assael of clothing boutique Avenue P in Larchmont. “Whatever you have looks like a completely different outfit.” The cardigan doesn’t have to be buttoned, Assael said. “Some people buy a sweater one size down. The too small sweater with the tunic top almost reads like a scarf would. It’s an accent piece,” she said. “With a tunic, try putting a shorter sweater or jacket. It changes the length of the layers.” Tunics are still tops on top. “Sometimes it’s a fine line between whether it’s a dress and a tunic,” Assael said. “For some it’s a dress, for some just a layering piece.” While leggings or tights are essentials to wear with a tunic/dress, Assael suggests mixing it up by wearing a “very basic skirt” underneath the tunic. One in black and one in brown would take you a long way with the tunics and would work with boots. “It’s a great outfit,” Assael said. What about footwear with all these tunics? Unlike our European sisters who wear boots all year long, our summers and early autumn are too warm and humid for boots. “Most people like leggings and cotton socks rather than tights,” said Assael. “If it’s a fall day that’s not that cold, wear a three-quarter legging with a chunky shoe and socks rolled down tomboy style.” Blazers are back, Assael said: “Nobody thought a structured blazer could go with hipped-out things, but it looks great.” Loafers are in style again, she said, as are oxfords in unexpected colors, like pink. Not sure about pink oxfords? Don’t be afraid to let your chic flag fly. Dressing is psychological, Assael said. “People say to

me, ‘Andrea, I love what you’re wearing. You can do that, but I can’t,’” Assael said. “I say, ‘Yes, you can.’” The art of the mix

Pullover sweaters make the fall fashion grade as well. For that tricky transitional weather period Gabriel Edwards of Mixology, “a fashion destination” in Rye Brook for juniors and women, said, “adding sweaters to jean shorts or leggings” is the way to go. Sweaters with leather or pleather detailing are really big this season at Mixology. “Another really big thing this fall is harem pants,” Edwards said. Not your gauzy “I Dream of Jeannie” look, but pants “more tailored, tapered,” that can be worn with summer tank tops. Graphic “vintagey” tees emblazoned with classic rock bands are also great to wear under a leather jacket with jeans or leggings, Edwards said. Leather weather

Melanie Shepard of Enchantments boutique in Katonah said the trend this season is leather, or “leatherette.” “Some customers have issues with leather,” Shepard said. “Top designers are showing both. Leatherette is lightweight, comfortable and washable. The price point is excellent. I find that leather is sometimes hot and heavy.” Shepard’s core line is “made in America,” and “my customers appreciate that,” she said. Shepard said that “a hint of leather” is turning up on the sleeve of a cardigan, on skirts and pants. “It looks nice on all body types,” Shepard said. Picking up any of these pieces with a bit of leather trim will make you au courant this season. Shepard sells a “duster” coat, a longish blazer, in a neutral sandstone color, a “great piece to wear in the fall as outerwear. In the winter it’s an updated blazer. It’s a nice neutral piece.” “If the budget is tight, focus on accessories, jewelry or a scarf,” said Shepard, who sells fashion jewelry. “Keep it simple with silver or gold. It can take a black outfit and really change it.” Top, dress your fall best in this Joseph Ribkoff dress available at Tiger Lily Boutique in Mt Kisco. Left and bottom right, Mag Tricotes of Scarsdale touts these as “Winter Wonderland” and “Fall Harvest.”

Fall fashion gets individual continued from page

Emerald city

Is the grass really greener on the other side of the fashion fence? This season offers a lot of opportunities to explore that question because green is this year’s “it” color. Encompassing a range of shades from emerald to lime, moss to celery, this is the year to go green. Green adds fresh excitement to formal dresses, jackets, skirts and coats. However, even a pair of green tights or a green scarf will add an elfish touch to your current look. Because of green’s association with nature, look for pieces that play up organic textures — silk like smooth leaves, velvet like rich moss, wool suiting like a deep forest. Peplum rally

This season’s styles present another opportunity to embrace the peplum. Supremely feminine, peplums are like body sculpting on a hanger. Their fit and flare silhouettes show off girly curves if you’re lucky enough to have that perfect bustto-waist-to-hip ratio. However, even if you don’t, no problem! While sometimes awkward looking on hangers, peplums are like figure magicians. Peplums create the illusion of tiny waists, no matter your size. They also add hippy volume to boyish figures. Proportion and texture are key. Large or stiff peplums command drama. Like beautiful butterflies, they steal any show. However, for every day wear, lightweight and loose peplums are a perfect compromise. They capture the theme with just a flutter.

Lay it on this fall with lots of layers

Winter white

Forget the old rule about white. In your mother’s era, it was a major faux pas to wear summer’s favorite neutral after Labor Day. However, in today’s age of instant gratification, we wait for nothing — fashion included. White jeans, cream sweaters and ecru suede skirts are as beautiful in fall as are the innocent white frocks of summer. To command this winter white look, skip diaphanous, gauzy flights of fancy, and instead choose heavier-weight textiles appropriate for the season’s change in temperature. Chunky jewelry, thick leather belts and brown boots take the look one step further and firmly ground it in the right season. Your palette of inspiration is the tone of cappuccino cream sprinkled with cinnamon and nutmeg. Not that we’re saying you have to match your coffee...

Lush layers

Layers have always been a successful way to navigate uncertain temperatures as the seasons change. This fall, designers are exploiting the intriguing sensuality provided by multitextured layers. Creativity reigns, and everything goes, so make this trend your own. Explore monochromatic, tonal fantasies in pairings of wool gabardine, gauzy sheers, lightweight knits, lace and fur. Cutouts and transparent panels add intrigue. Accents that reflect light (such as stones, metallic threads and metallic accents) enhance depth. To get the most out of this look, compose layers as an artist would design a collage. Be attentive to volume and movement. Give yourself some air. The uppermost layer of the outfit should seem to dance as you walk. Jungle fever

Gotta love it. Maybe we’re subliminally looking for that Tarzan fantasy, but whatever the reason, animal prints will never go out of style. This year’s darling is the sleek and powerful leopard. Play up these feline spots to let them roar, or tone them down to a quiet purr. No matter how you wear them, leopard prints are hot. Like neutrals, they marry well with a variety of accent colors — red, navy blue and brown are classics. However, for added freshness and fun, look for colorful interpretations in bright colors. Just remember, a little goes a long way. This is generally a look for separates, rather than head-to-toe ensembles. Unless, of course, you’re Cat Woman. In that case, meow.

Green (emerald in the case of this solid soft knit cardigan with tuxedo back details) is the color of the season and leather among the hottest materials (these are pull on liquid leather knit slim pants in black) to choose from, making this Clara Sunwoo outfit perfect. At Enchantments in Katonah.

T

he most fashion forward look this season is layering. Layering isn’t just about piling everything you own on top of everything else. To not look like a mash-up, you have to take a little care. Proportion is key. Catherine Hiriart at Catherine H., a stylin’ new boutique in Katonah, called layering her “favorite thing.” Hiriart, who is the real deal from France, recently opened the boutique after owning another shop by the same name for a decade in Milford, Conn. While overseeing By the progress of a client in one of her Eve capacious dressing rooms, Hiriart Marx opined her strongly held views on her favorite topic, layering. “To start, you need a great base,” she said. She and the client were both wearing what she called the perfect base, which were a pair of Avenue Montaigne trousers that have a bit of stretch. “These trousers fit so well. Anything you layer on top of them would be great,” Hiriart said. The ability to deftly layer is a real necessity in the Northeast, according to Hiriart, who said, “The weather is unpredictable and it can change quickly. Getting dressed in the morning in layers gives you the freedom to be comfortable all day.” Her pet peeve is a primary base that fits poorly. “No matter what you layer on top of a bad base won’t look right,” she said. “You must start with a really good base that fits and flatters the body and shows the shape of it,” Hiriart said. After establishing a base, the rest is easy and leaves room to be creative. “I like mixing textures. I love leather on top of silk or knits,” she said. The leathers she prefers are unlined because they fit the body more closely, and in terms of weight, are more versatile. Layering, Hiriart opined, extends the life of an outfit and makes it season-less. “When you’re shopping for clothes, think in terms of can you wear it for three out of four seasons,” she said. “That is best.” Hiriart said a primary advantage of layering means you need fewer pieces because every piece multitasks. “Think in terms of combinations,” she said. “Invest in key pieces that can be dressed up or dressed down.” The easiest way to change the mood of any outfit base is to accessorize. Shoes and jewelry, for example, can take any base whether it’s a dress or a skirt or trousers from day to night. Hiriart cautioned against overaccessorizing: “A tall woman can wear a very long necklace, while a smaller woman might choose one spectacular chunky belt.” Hiriart also recommended buying base pieces in one of the new neutrals, like blush or smoky gray. The next layer might be something in a jewel tone, something red or blue or green. Elaine Andriotis of Beginnings Boutique in Scarsdale and Beginnings Bleu in Armonk loves a layer look that can be created by signature pieces by the brands Vince, Theory, J Brand, Joie and Current Elliot. “Leather is the most important layering piece this fall,” Andriotis said. “Try a leather jacket over a sleeveless top or dress. Or a fleecy sweatshirt with the collar of a button down shirt sticking out. We just got some faux fur in. But leather is bigger than any fur this season.” She also loves button down shirts worn with a thermal on top, and hoodies worn under denim. Layering isn’t just about clothes, Andriotis said. It’s also about accessories: “We like mixing bangles with wrap bracelets. Beaded necklaces — and you can’t have too many — are also in style this season.” Andriotis said you definitely can wear a scarf and a

necklace. “We love the new very long necklaces where the pendant hits your belly button,” she said. At Great Stuff in Scarsdale and Chappaqua, Lori Friedman said she’s been dressing women in layers for about 30 years. “Our fall and winter business begins with the sweater,” Friedman said. “We also love vests that can be layered over sweaters, or a lighter weight sweater vest layered over a long sleeve blouse or T-shirt.” Underneath that sweater, she recommends a slim cut tank top. “Especially for winter we do tanks that are thinner and take up less space under sweaters,” Friedman said. She’s had a long love affair with vests, which layer nicely over sweaters or even a lighter weight vest, or a button down shirt or long-sleeved T-shirt. Her favorite vest this year comes from the company Montcler from France. “In the past we’ve done them in reds and royal blues which go great with jeans,” Friedman said. “This season for resort I’m thinking dusty pink and pale blue.” In her stores she had a dusty pink and pale blue sweater that she said is beautiful with any jean. The sweater was so popular it already sold out. Can’t find the right sweater? Try a vest. She likes Herno, an Italian line. “It’s a very soft, quilted vest,” Friedman said. “Vests are great for the erratic weather when it’s warm one minute and cold the next.”

Friedman loves scarves, which she said remain an important layering piece. “I’ve seen women in restaurants check their coat, but keep their scarf,” she said. The scarf pulls together their outfit, and also is a precaution against any chill or too much air conditioning. Her favorite scarf this season is a pretty cashmere one that goes over the head: “Scarves are smaller this season. And the palette is softer than in years before. My customer doesn’t love brown, so we’re doing blues, reds and raspberries.” Great Stuff has scarves in every price range from $48-$900. That rather expensive scarf is an antique Hermes design scarf sewn on to a piece of cashmere knit. “It’s reversible from cashmere knit to the Hermes silk on the other side. It’s a real statement piece,” Friedman said. “It’s not for everyone, but certainly is beautiful. It’s great stuff at any price.” Friedman is also sold on the white button down shirt which she recommends be layered with a vest or a piece of jewelry that hangs to the waist. “A white shirt is a canvas for anything,” she said. Speaking of jewelry, she is showing a lot of crystal: “We have long crystal pieces meant to be worn alone or in conjunction with another long piece.” Right now she is loving Chan Luu worn with pearls or a gold piece with little hanging bits that reflect the wearer’s lifestyle. “Our big push this year is tassels,” Friedman said. “Tassels are big.” At Lola in Rye, Caroline Schneider’s position on layering is classic with a twist. “Layering is the new black,” Schneider said. “It makes old items look new and new look even more modern.” She also believes layering makes transitioning from one season to another seamless. “Traditionally we had summer wardrobes and winter wardrobes,” Schneider said. “Today our seasons are so much more about the transitional. We don’t go right from summer into fall. There’s no smooth transition from winter into spring and summer. But if you layer properly, you’re able to bring items forward into the next season.” Hosiery, Schneider said, can help make that transition. “At Lola we sell traditional heavy opaque tights, as well as lighter weight tights with interesting patterns and colors.” These tights layered under more summery clothes (and a cool pair of booties really helps) will transition a summer garment into a fall one. Leggings worn under a tunic bring that tunic forward into fall. And tunics are flattering on all body types. How you wear your clothes is also important. “Nobody’s tucking,” Schneider said. Longer shirt lengths peeking out under a shorter jacket or sweater is an ontrend look right now. “Different lengths add interest to the clothes,” Schneider said. A tried and true layering trend is scarves, which are still a big story this fall. “We love scarves at Lola,” Schneider said. “We think they’re a nice way to bring color to the face. Right now everyone is still tan from their summer vacation, but in a couple of weeks, that won’t be the case. A beautiful scarf is a way to add color and extend the summer season.” Speaking of adding color, one of Schneider’s favorites is plum: “Plums are nice because they play well with other colors.” She said she absolutely has customers who still stick to basic black, but said that she’s finding that other customers feel a little blacksaturated. “We always do well here with all shades of blue, everything from lighter blues into cobalt and navy,” Schneider said. She’s also including some brighter colors for the fall, including reds and greens. However you choose to layer, know that a strategic piling on of fashion essentials are the building blocks to a great fall wardrobe.

Fall Fashion

Accessory explosion: Handbags,

A

ccessories are the darlings of fashion. They can elevate an outfit, change its mood or add an unexpected twist. Accessories are your way to make fashion your own. By This season TRACI is resplendent with options — play with hats, DUTTON shoes and jewelry for edgy LUDWIG drama, chic statements and cool confidence. But most of all, have fun. If you need inspiration, here’s a top 10 trends list to get you started: Ooh-la-la coats

Get noticed — coming or going. Statement-making outwear is the first thing they’ll see. Colored leathers, oversized parkas, fur (real or faux) and feathers are adding interest and intrigue to coats and jackets of all lengths and silhouettes. Just remember, when your coat is the shining jewel, keep everything else simple. Think of a fashionable coat as part of your outfit. Wear it like a piece of jewelry. You want the play between coat and clothing to create the overall look. Nothing should seem to be a careless afterthought. Coordinate colors and be cognizant of length. You never want the hem of your dress to dangle lower than the edge of your coat. Invest in a duster instead. Likewise, you don’t want the beautiful lines of long legs, a short skirt and supple boots to disappear beneath the volume of a long, heavy coat. Go for a cropped leather jacket or a short peacoat instead. Hats off

Tip your cap to true head-to-toe fashion. This season, hats are the crowning touch on outfits of every personality. Individual style dominates with a wide range of options. Anything goes, as long as it’s on your head, including beanies, fedoras, knit scull caps, berets and even baseball caps. Big hair bows and over-the-top feather fascinators are also popular. Choose a hat like any other accessory. Its proportion, form and color should work to deliberately enhance the entire look. However, anything too matchy-matchy can sometimes look contrived. For example, instead of coordinating hat and coat, pair the hat with the outfit beneath the coat instead. It’s decidedly more modern and playful. Gothic revival

Fashion’s current preoccupation with metal hardware is one of the strongest influences on accessories this season. Look for shoes, handbags and jewelry (predominantly in black) punctuated by spikes, studs and heavy chains. Chain link bracelets and belts are also popular but they can be heavy, so be aware of comfortable proportions. Skull motifs and sculptural skeleton jewelry are also shaking up conventions of high fashion. Just make sure the Gothic influence is balanced by more serious, elegant elements to prevent looking like a ’90s redux. Take a risk: embrace the trend with a leather clutch bearing a chunky skull closure, for example. There’s no better way to transform expected into edgy, conservative into cool.

hats, jewelry and coats ignite season

Street smart

nail polish is making a comeback. Look for it to complement fall’s preference for dark clothing, as well as to enhance the season’s favorite lip color — a deep, saturated red.

Graffiti has left the landscape of urban bridges and subway cars to become wearable art. Look for colorful tags, messages, related texts and symbols dripping across shoes, scarves and handbags. Bright, in-your-face, mural-inspired lines and colors are fantastically bold interpretations of the trend. Reminiscent of the quick work of nighttime’s “writers,” or clandestine spray paint artists, this trend is the perfect mixture of high and low art. Decorated Converse sneakers and Doc Martens ankle boots are excellent examples. Just be careful not to blend in with any downtown walls.

Goldilocks

Goldilocks has gotten an upgrade. Delicate blonde has become screaming yellow or luminous gold. Hair is the next frontier in fashion. Brightly colored hair accents are the next accessory. Faux mohawks, feathers, weaves and semi-permanent color creams offer a variety of ways to decorate your hair with hues from the rainbow. Manic Panic is a brand of color cream that is easy to use and washes out after a few shampoos. Like a chameleon, change your hair according to your mood. It’s not just about what you wear, but who you are. Suspended animation

nance of this trend, it’s also a lucky time for us, if a strap happens to break. Mom would be proud.

Hands on

The next time you’re at a party, you might not have to worry about what to do with two free hands. You won’t need to immediately get a drink or take up smoking. The solution might just be found in fall’s latest accessory trend. The clutch is the handbag of the moment — and it’s not just for evening anymore. Fall runway shows were parades of beautifully dressed girls, all vying for one honor, to see who was carrying the best clutch. Lucky for practical purposes, yesteryear’s miniscule clutches have expanded — literally — to include all shapes and sizes. They’re no longer tiny enough for just an ID, a credit card and lipstick. Now, they can accommodate a full spectrum of everyday practicalities, while still maintaining their certain je ne sais quoi. History lesson

Demure chain and pendants are so passé. Instead, thick, textural chokers and wide metallic ribbons around the neck are in. Tribal and futuristic influences are hot. Look for woven fibers, interspersed with handmade beads, natural coconut shell, petrified bark and polished minerals. In contrast to this homage to the past, jewelry designers are also looking, with optimism, to the future. Broad collars of polished metal are sleek and reflect light beautifully. Chokers are statement-making jewelry. They radiate color and texture — and are the perfect vehicle to energize a simple, monotone outfit.

Dark and delicious

When the season’s overriding fashion tends can be described as gothic, urban and fierce, there’s no room for bubblegum lips and cotton-candy nail polish. Instead, dark eyeliner, smoky eyes and rich nail colors are gaining popularity as appropriate counterparts. Even black

creativity begins….

Pin up girl

Do you remember your mother’s advice to always carry a safety pin to remedy a torn hem, a broken strap or a popped button? Now fashion’s nursemaid has taken center stage. Like divas, safety pins are everywhere. This season, clothing designers are using them to decorate everything from T-shirts and jeans to vests and fringed skirts. Likewise, accessory designers have repurposed them into interesting jewelry and belts. Look for them especially in the construction of belts, bracelets and earrings. The best examples are not the most obvious. Because of the predomi-

Everything old is new again. Dive into a late ’80s flashback with suspenders. Just make sure to wear them 21st Century-style. Suspenders are more than just “Flash Dance.” Clip suspenders to a pair of ripped boyfriend jeans; throw on a suit jacket, and you’ve just upped the sex appeal of those old Levi’s. Or, for added elegance, button suspenders onto a pairing of houndstooth trousers and a crisp, white shirt. You’ll be surprised at how versatile they are. They add color. They add compositional line. They add irony and gusto. They also provide a place to pile on the safety pins.
