Scarsdale High School Class of 2018 Graduates lauded for having the courage to take action BY VALERIE ABRAHAMS
T
aking action was a defining experience for this year’s Scarsdale High School graduating class. At the 101st SHS commencement June 22, the Class of 2018 gathered on Dean Field to hear graduation messages and congratulations from school officials, advisers and classmates. Senior class president Blake Goldstein noted how much he and his classmates have changed since they started out as scared freshman, “lost in a strange place called SHS.” Along the way, he said, they shared many bonding events — spirit days, BBQs, ice cream and movie nights, junior Olympics, the senior class play and the prom. They successfully managed the annual community carnival, as well. But among the Class of 2018’s most important accomplishments were a student-run walkout against gun violence in March and a hurricane relief dinner students organized to raise money for communities devastated by weather events last fall. As diligent SHS students, they learned facts, figures and formulas, Goldstein said, but what they learned at SHS goes much deeper. “We learned to project our voices and advocate for change,” he said. “We learned compassion through community service; we learned the importance of hard work and perseverance … and we learned that, when our own efforts were not enough, we could always turn to our teachers and our friends for aid. We are here together, helping each other succeed.” The Class of 2018’s contributions run deep, Goldstein said, citing the hundreds of meals they served to homeless people through Midnight Run, the dozens of houses they built through Habitat for Humanity and the many hours they spent tutoring students at the Edward G. Williams after-school program in Mount Vernon as a few examples. He urged his classmates to use the tools they have gained, along with their own personal drive and compassion, to continue to change the world. “As we step out into the world, we cannot forget the impact we have already made here and will continue to make,” Goldstein said. Also reflecting on the class’s growth from kids focused on carpools and play dates to independent young adults with goals, values and essential life knowledge, Scarsdale Board of Education president Bill Natbony credited the talented and caring SHS faculty members, counselors and administrators for the role they played in molding each of the 394 graduates. “You have worked over the years to fill their heads with facts, dates, formulas, grammar rules and artistic concepts — some of which you will use and some you will forget,” Natbony said. Quoting from Robert Fulghum’s well-known book of reflection, “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” Natbony noted key lessons to guide the rest of the graduates’ lives, including one in particular — to live a balanced life, a life in which the graduates learn, draw, paint, sing, dance, play and work every day. From kindergarten onward, Scarsdale has “instilled the basic building blocks and rules that have enabled, and will enable, you to construct a good life for yourselves,” Natbony said. Senior class advisers Sandra Chan and Elise D’Ammora urged the graduates to continue their journey to discover a new passion or a new career without the fear of trying new things, and to make new friends as well. “Leaving here means you have a clean slate,” Chan said. “Expand yourself … and remain open to meeting new people.”

She reminded them to put aside their electronic devices and be good friends by taking time to talk and make eye contact with and appreciate each other. “Stand up for what you believe in, even if others disagree
with you,” D’Ammora said. “Remember, your voice is important. Stay informed and play an active role in whatever you do … You can be the change if you choose.” SHS Principal Ken Bonamo said he and the entire community are filled with anticipation at what the future holds for the Class of 2018. Reflecting on the values of the Scarsdale community — active citizenship, civic engagement and vigSophie Hodges orous, respectful and informed debate — he said, “We hope the resources spent on education here have provided an enriching and engaging experience that has developed in you a depth of critical and creative thinking, an appreciation for global interdependence and a genuine love of learning.” This class distinguished itself as the first one in many years to participate in political action and advocacy for change, Bonamo said, and he urged them to continue doing so. “In order to make real change and bring real progress … in order to advance a cause, you will need courage,” Bonamo said. “I hope you will continue the foundation of the engagement and advocacy you started this year … Find your voices and [find] ways to continue to confront the policy and environmental challenges of our times. As you write your own stories, I hope you will endeavor to make the world a better place … and leave a legacy of love … of family and of yourselves.”

Edgemont High School Class of 2018 Identity, community highlight 2018 EHS graduation BY ROBERT CHRISTIE
D
uring the June 21 Edgemont High School graduation, EHS principal Devan Ganeshananthan, speaking one last time before he retires at the end of this month, asked the audience to consider not only the community’s diversity as represented in the Class of 2018 before him but also its specific “identity.” Ganeshananthan recalled attending a meeting of school principals in Westchester several years ago at which one of his colleagues looked at him, tapped his arm, and said, “I’ll have an orange juice.” As the audience laughed, Ganeshananthan said he went back to the kitchen, poured the orange juice and handed it to his fellow principal before introducing himself. “In that moment, that other principal made a judgement about my identity,” Ganeshananthan said. “It was an incorrect assumption but not necessarily a negative one. Personal identity is something you claim for yourself, that you define and that you own.” Ganeshananthan asked the audience to contemplate the three words they’d place on an index card to describe themselves. “For some of us, those words may be working mother, educator, musician, helper, Asian American, confidant, gay, Protestant, Catholic, father, humanist, first generation,” the principal said. “The list could go on and on.” He also asked the 154 graduates to consider the I.D. cards they will get in college. Ganeshananthan pointed out, at some point this summer, they will trade in their Edgemont I.D. card for college I.D. cards. Then, once they graduate college, they’ll receive different I.D. cards — whether it be for graduate school or for a new job. “What’s the commonality between all these I.D. cards,” Ganeshananthan asked the students. “The commonality is your picture — it’s you. Think about the [various descriptors] from the index cards I mentioned before,” he said. “Those are people with identities. While things change around you, stay true to who you are and never forget what makes you, you.” Ganeshananthan and his family are moving to England

Edgemont High School graduate Joanna Kaizer
next year, where he will be the new principal of The American School in London. While multiple EHS students spoke during the June 21 graduation ceremony, the story of senior Joanna Kaizer was a heartwarming example of Edgemont’s sense of community. “When people think of Edgemont the word ‘bubble’ comes to mind since Edgemont is so small and everyone knows each other,” Kaizer said. Kaizer said some may view this as a negative, as outsiders may view the bubble as a community of competition in which everyone knows everyone’s business. “They aren’t entirely wrong,” she said, “but this bubble isn’t all bad.” She harkened back to junior year — a year in high school which for many, she said, can be very difficult. This difficulty comes in large part due to the beginning of the college
Principal Devan Ganeshananthan
process — studying for more AP exams, beginning college visits and taking standardized tests. Kaizer said her junior year got off to a good start. “But [that] October, I very suddenly lost my father,” she said. “The only reason I’m able to stand here today and speak to you on behalf of the Class of 2018 is because of this Edgemont bubble.” After the passing of her father, Kaizer said, the sense of community often attributed to Edgemont was on full display. “Before I even came back to school,” she said, “I received bunches of flowers, enough food to last my family months and, most importantly, an abundant sense of love.” Kaizer said she feared returning to EHS because she assumed the outpouring of support she received when she was away would cease once she stepped foot on campus. She was happy to be proved wrong. “The second I got back to school, my classmates gathered around me and asked how I was doing,” Kaizer said. “They offered help ranging from sending me notes to catching me up on work, to being a shoulder to cry on, to being a voice of reason during a time of struggle.” That support didn’t stop at the student body, either. It also extended to faculty and staff. “They asked how they could support me with my school work and with how I was feeling,” Kaizer said. “When I missed days because I was struggling, not a single teacher was upset with me — rather each one wanted to talk and make sure I was doing OK.” She said the help her teachers offered ranged from extended deadlines, to extra one-on-one help and conversations discussing the loss of her dad. “If it wasn’t for the size and closely-knit nature of this bubble, I don’t think I would have received the support I did, and I don’t believe I’d be half the person I am today,” Kaizer said. She recalled the story of Hamlet, which each Edgemont student eventually reads in English class, and how no one in Hamlet’s family supported him. This caused him to feel alone and go mad. Kaizer said that’s not the case in Edgemont. “At the end of the day, there will always be strengths and weaknesses to every community,” she said. “I believe this community has far more strengths than it has weaknesses. The fact that everyone knows each other is a good thing as each person can feel comfortable reaching out to support their classmates — and each person can feel comfortable receiving that help.”

he Scarsdale High School senior class show, “The Little Mermaid,” lit up the stage May 18 and 19. Directed by Camila Tardif, the musical was based on the classic Disney film, and featured more than 50 graduating seniors, many of whom had little to no acting or musical theater experience. The show was a chance for students to unwind in the evenings following their senior options internships, and for the grade to come together one last time before heading separate ways.
