hy does a toothache always develop when your regular dental practice is closed? Why does a tooth break on a Sunday? Emergencies never happen when it’s convenient. Urgent Care Dental is the answer to this dilemma. Scarsdale resident Dr. Scott Loeser opened Urgent Care Dental to offer after-hours care to all in need of immediate attention for dental emergencies. No appointments are necessary. Walk-ins are welcome. This state-of-the-art, green, dental facility is staffed by board-certified dentists and a professional team experienced in emergency dentistry, who provide emergency dental services for children and adults, seven days a week, including holidays. The of-

fice can handle broken or knocked-out teeth, abscessed teeth, tooth pain, oral or tooth infections, injuries to the mouth and lips, lost fillings or crowns, and problems following dental work. Previously, those with dental emergencies would need to wait for an appointment with their dentists or head to a hospital emergency room, which oftentimes is ill-equipped to handle dental issues. A resource for patients and dentists alike, Urgent Care Dental serves the public by providing a place for people to get the care they need — when they need it. Urgent Care Dental: When it just can’t wait. Hours: Open seven days a week. Monday through Friday, from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Smart shoppers who have discovered Mixology, the 8-year-old emporium for comfortable, casual and occasion dressing in the Village Center, are learning the practical and aesthetic benefits of mix and match — hence, mixology. Here, moms and their daughters can successfully pair, say, a luxurious cashmere sweater with an equally gorgeous but more economical skirt or trouser. The result: a smashing ensemble that mixes outfits with price points that won’t break the bank. Store owner Gabrielle Edwards is the enthusiastic spokesperson for the sartorial art form, recounting how her after-school job at a shop on Long Island sold her on the brand’s mission — to which she is totally committed in her own place. What’s there to discover at Mixology? Jac Parker casuals, denim by Hidden and Flying Monkey, pleather skirts by Brooklyn Karma, cashmere by Decker and Wyse, Jocelyn fur accessories, and lots more. At Mixology and the newly opened outlet next door, you can develop the confidence to become the best version of yourself. Hours: Open seven days a week. Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday to 8 p.m., Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

omen empowering women is the story behind I Am More Scarsdale, a fresh and sassy retail space for clothing, jewelry and accessories in the heart of the downtown, that offers — as the name suggests — more. And the more is the reason that smart women are supporting the new effort by the two entrepreneurs behind the grand plan. The more of I Am More Scarsdale is a concept — that the right clothing builds confidence, makes women feel strong, and makes them feel great about themselves because they look great. With the knowhow to pair jeans with tees, cashmere with leather, scarves, bags and hats that turn off-the-rack into onthe-go, and the right jewelry for finish, the co-owners have, at their fingertips, the savvy their customers need to dress up or down, casual to chic, informal to elegant. But clothing is just the beginning at I Am More Scarsdale. The customers are women, the designers are women, and then there are the women’s issues — the philanthropy, the giving back to support women’s causes — that sets I Am More Scarsdale apart. For instance, the owners are planning more events like the breast cancer awareness talk they held at the shop in October. On event nights, 10 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the charity. It’s win-win: great clothing for a great cause. I Am More Scarsdale is not just another retail store filling the former Scarsdale Childs Play space. Like its predecessor, it is packed with merchandise with variety to please any and all comers. It may be a small store, but it has a big heart. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Extended holiday hours on Sunday and Monday, and by appointment.

hat’s in a name? When it comes to real estate and the magnitude of the decision-making involved, a name means a lot. For instance, do you know that Real Living Real Estate was named “Real Estate Agency Brand of the Year,” with a 97 percent satisfaction rating for an unprecedented two years in a row — 2016 and 2017? And do you know that Real Living was named the “Most Trusted” real estate brand in the 29th annual Harris Poll EquiTrend® study? And do you know that Real Living is the luxury brand of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway family of affiliated companies — the Omaha genius behind the world’s most successful investments? So, yes, when it comes to real estate, a name means a lot. Whether you are buying or selling and looking for the best company to represent your interests, the name to look for is Five Corners Properties/Real Living. Five Corners Properties is the locally owned boutique agency for discerning buyers and sellers, and the only area agency for international MLS listings, which provides access to many more prospects seeking the sophisticated properties that characterize the Scarsdale market. Let’s say you want to buy a home in Scarsdale. You want agents who live locally and who understand the various assets of each Scarsdale neighborhood. You want

agents who know about the schools, how to commute to work, and how long it’s likely to take. You’ll want to know about shopping and delivery services, and the athletic and recreational opportunities here, as well as the social life. With their stellar training, Five Corners Properties’ trusted advisers can show you how to compare one house to another and, most importantly, how to narrow the choices so that you will enjoy living in your new home for years to come. Suppose you want to sell a property. A Five Corners Properties QHA (Qualified Home Assessment) will help you set the appropriate price to make your home attractive to buyers — too high, and you’re priced out of the market; too low, and it raises suspicions about something amiss. With our tips, your home will have good curb appeal, inviting buyers to want to look inside. And with our marketing expertise and online resources, your property will be positioned for a quicker sale and a higher price than you might expect. Put your real estate needs in the hands of Five Corners Properties. Gain access to international buyers, Connecticut buyers and sellers at our sister location (across from Whole Foods in Greenwich), and those in our 4,000 network offices. We are experienced, committed to your goals, and trained to unravel the many steps to buy and sell real estate. Working with us is always a pleasure. Hours: Open seven days a week.

hoe-Inn, the largest independent women’s footwear retailer in the tristate area, with nine locations, has been owned and operated by the Lawson family for 45 years. Melissa and Billy Lawson, now joined by their son, Peter, continue to bring Westchester residents the hot trends and classic styling in footwear. No store in all of Westchester or Connecticut gives you the selection you’ll find at ShoeInn — designers like Stuart Weitzman, Vince, Crime London, Botkier, Aquatalia, Fioretini and Baker, and so many more. Plus, the five Italian factories we work with — exclusively in the U.S. — give you an unparalleled selection from day to evening, dress to sport, flat to high. This season, booties, velvet, combat boots and fashion sneakers are trending, and that’s just the beginning of what you’ll find. How about our unbelievable weatherproof selection, including Sorel, Ugg, Blondo, Valdini, etc. etc. And for the young at heart, there’s Steve Madden, Jeffrey Campbell, and all their friends. Last year, we reopened our store at the Golden Horseshoe in Scarsdale to rave reviews. If you’re Connecticut bound, visit our newest location at 36 Elm St. in New Canaan. latinum Drive Realty was co-founded by Zachary Harrison and Heather Harrison, who grew up in Scarsdale and are now raising their children in the Scarsdale schools. Given that many of the firm’s agents grew up in the area and are now also raising their families in Scarsdale, the firm understands what makes Scarsdale special and unique and who is likely to be moving here next. Platinum Drive Realty brings a fresh, professional approach to Scarsdale real estate. By having co-founders who are products of Scarsdale, and its headquarters in the area instead of a distant location with no ties to the community, the firm has repeatedly succeeded in achieving exciting results for its clients the community can be proud of. Platinum Drive Realty ranks No. 1 in highest selling price in Scarsdale among the top three offices by sales volume since 2012, and ranks No. 1 in this prestigious category again thus far in 2017. In addition, for the fourth year in a row, Platinum Drive was named this year to the distinguished Inc. 5000 list of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. In addition, The Silicon Review recently named Platinum Drive one of the 50 Best Companies to Watch. The firm is committed to providing outstanding, state-of-the-art services in a culture of professional excellence, growth and teamwork.

Platinum Drive serves a wide variety of clients from experienced sellers to first-time buyers as well as many of the area’s top builders and investors. The firm has a team of energetic and dedicated agents, many of whom worked in professions such as law, finance, education and marketing prior to joining the real estate field. Platinum Drive is strongly committed to giving back to Scarsdale and the greater community. The company participates in various causes including Scarsdale Schools Education Foundation, Friends of the Scarsdale Library, Scarsdale Bowl, Four Diamonds, supporting the fight against pediatric cancer; Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Women’s Division, supporting research in women’s health and cancers; JDRF, a worldwide leader in research to cure type 1 diabetes; the Junior League of Westchester and various Scarsdale events and other school and PTA organizations. There’s no need to worry about leaving your precious family member at Privileged Paws, because you can think of the staff there as “peace of mind providers and conquerors of guilt,” as they say. Privileged Paws is conveniently located on Weaver Street near the Hutchinson River Parkway, with plenty of nearby parking. Safety is the No. 1 priority, so all dogs first come in for a free-of-charge evaluation day. “We want to make sure they have the right temperament for day care and also that they’re not stressed by the experience,” says Shauna Henkle, owner. Staff is trained in first aid and pet CPR. This is a small, personalized day care, so pups enjoy the day hanging out with a few of their friends, getting plenty of play time, and close interaction with humans. They return home happy, relaxed and, best of all, tired! Privileged Paws also provides one-onone grooming, so dogs can enjoy an extra bit of pampering while here for day care. For more than three decades, Scarsdale parents have relied on Kids B.A.S.E. and The Little School for exceptional care and enriching learning experiences for their youngsters, from preschoolers through grade 5. The success of these pre-K and before- and after-school programs centers on teachers who understand this age group and who enjoy watching children respond and grow with each new venture. New within The Little School is the Pre-K Academy, a program for “transitional 4-year-olds” — those who need a bit more time before entering kindergarten. Children born later in the year often find that additional readiness relieves anxieties associated with the formality of public school. Here, in the protected environment of the Pre-K Academy, children learn through play and through the school’s “project approach,” where youngsters look deeper into a theme to expand their learning. This experiential method helps children develop the confidence they need to excel. Students attend from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, led by two or three New York State certified teachers. Class size is limited. For more information, call weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Now in its 73rd year, Hoff-Barthelson Music School, Westchester’s premier community music school, offers students of all ages and abilities the opportunity to discover and pursue their passion for music to their highest potential. At the heart of the Hoff-Barthelson experience is a nurturing community of fellow students and a faculty drawn from the nation’s most talented teachers and performers. Once enrolled for music lessons, all students gain complimentary access to a comprehensive program that includes musicianship classes in theory, ear training and composition; ensemble opportunities for students at all levels, including wind, vocal and jazz ensembles, a multitiered orchestra program, and chamber music; as well as myriad performance opportunities. Students also benefit from master classes, workshops, and coaching with world-renowned guest artists and members of the New York Philharmonic, with which the school has partnered for more than 20 years. Hoff-Barthelson has achieved national recognition for its unsurpassed leadership in education, performance and community service; and has long been one of Westchester County’s most cherished cultural resources. Enrollment is ongoing throughout the year. Tuition is prorated, based on time of enrollment.

A sense of community has defined the Jewish people for more than 5,000 years, and that spirit — that commitment to connection and togetherness — is as relevant today as it was in the time of our ancestors. At Scarsdale Synagogue Temples Tremont and Emanu-El, a Reform congregation, we embrace our heritage to the Jewish people and to each other. Building connections and building community permeate every facet of our programming: our worship services on Shabbat and the holidays; the educational opportunities we offer through our nursery school, religious school and adult education; the community action committees pursuing the concept of tikkun olam (acts of kindness to repair the world); and our social activities that draw us together to rejoice in the beauty of living a Jewish life. Here, Julie brings more than 30 years in the fashion industry and her amazing connections to the choices she selects for her customers — women and teens looking for casual as well as dressy options in a range of prices. iana White, founding artistic director of the Scarsdale Ballet Studio (SBS), is thrilled to be celebrating the school’s 25th anniversary. A former leading ballerina of the New York City Ballet, dance has been her life’s passion since she was 3 years old. Sharing her love of ballet and her professional experience with people of all ages is her mission in Westchester. Now a sought-after international master teacher and Balanchine specialist, Diana fosters an atmosphere of encouragement, dedication and camaraderie at her school. She has assembled a world-class faculty, providing the traditional classical ballet training and coaching that enables students to achieve their fullest potential. SBS has a proud history of alumni who have gone on to dance in major ballet companies and who are regularly accepted to elite dance conservatories and colleges. But Diana and her team are just as proud of their hundreds of graduates who succeed in a great variety of professions and for whom ballet is still a significant part of their lives. Beyond extolling the rewards and benefits of ballet training for children, from their early through teen years, Diana is impassioned about the physical, cognitive and emotional benefits of ballet classes for adults — both young and the not-so-young. SBS welcomes absolute beginners through experienced dancers and will soon host classes for Parkinson’s patients. It’s never too early or too late to start dancing! Creative ballet, technique, pointe, partnering, character, and conditioning classes take place in spacious professional studios. SBS offers several performing opportunities, including an annual “Nutcracker” at the Performing Arts Center at Purchase College.

t’s been two years now since Prudential Centennial Realty and Tri-Crest Realty were acquired by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England Properties and became a part of the newly formed Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Westchester Properties (BHHS). Industry veteran and Scarsdale resident, Mark Nadler, a familiar and respected name in Scarsdale and real estate for more than 30 years, leads the Scarsdale and Larchmont offices. BHHS is part of the legendary Berkshire Hathaway family of companies — Scarsdale’s real estate buyers and sellers have never been in better hands. The Berkshire Hathaway name is synonymous with its leader, Warren Buffet, whose expertise and business acumen are unparalleled in today’s marketplace. Blue chip investors who have trusted his wisdom have flourished, just as real estate investors in Scarsdale can do no better than to trust the agents working under the Berkshire Hathaway name. Working out of the company’s four Westchester offices, located in Scarsdale, Larchmont, Eastchester and Rye, these agents are as committed to excellence as the famous Mr. Buffet, who would have it no other way. Whatever your real estate interest — residential, commercial, corporate relocation, equestrian, waterfront living — BHHS will provide you with the kind of exceptional service that leads to successful and satisfying closings. Our clients tell us that

in their real estate dealings, agents from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices provide “the best and most innovative services they have ever experienced.” Constantly growing and evolving, earlier this year Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England Properties opened its first New York City affiliation, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England Properties/Westchester Properties continues its strategic expansion in the Northeast under the leadership of CEO Candace Adams, giving them a total of 57 offices, with nearly 1,800 agents. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Westchester Properties also cares deeply about their community and is consistently giving back. For the second year in a row, BHHS has hosted Comedy for a Cause, a fundraising event to benefit the Sunshine Kids, a nonprofit organization that helps children being treated for cancer. This year, we raised more than $25,000 for the charity. All proceeds will be used to provide the most exciting activities, trips and events — free of charge — for as many young cancer patients as possible. Mark S. Briskin,

D.D.S.

Rob’s new book, “Uniquely Normal: Tapping the Reservoir of Normalcy to Treat Autism,” with the foreword by Temple Grandin, is a great resource for parents with a child on the autism spectrum. Here’s what people are saying: “Bernstein’s methodology, developed after years of experience in the present educational system, demonstrates a revolutionary cognitive approach to autism that departs from current practice. It is a must read for all parents and professionals dealing with children with autism.” — Douglas P. Hudson, MD, MPH “Without exception, Rob Bernstein’s work with these patients has markedly improved their ability to function effectively with others. He has a unique ability to engage with people, gently yet firmly coaxing them into the wider world, often for the first time. Once there, he guides them toward claiming their competence and channeling their untapped strengths. I stand behind Rob Bernstein’s techniques without reservation.” — Ram Kairam, MD, Pediatric Neurologist, Developmental Neurology Associates; Professor of Clinical Neurology, Columbia University Medical Center “Robert Bernstein is one of the smartest, most perceptive people I know. No matter where someone falls on the scale of ‘normal,’ Bernstein finds a way to connect.” — Will Shortz, The New York Times’s crossword editor The book is available on Amazon.com.

oon Lee, M.D., director of Scarsdale Integrative Medicine, believes health doesn’t come from a pill, it comes from a lifestyle. She established a primary care practice specializing in functional medicine — treating root causes, not just symptoms. Dr. Lee motivates her patients to make lifestyle changes. She put a patient facing geriatric depression, for example, on a nutrition and sleep plan, and encouraged exercising and taking classes at a local college. In her view, those kinds of changes, not pill prescriptions, give a better chance for wellness. A former medical school professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine turned local medical provider, Dr. Lee, a Scarsdale resident, has seen her practice grow tenfold in 10 years, while focusing on food, herbal remedies, and lifestyle intervention. Their team of four family doctors and internists provide excellent primary care and functional medicine. They offer medical weight loss directed by Dayna Arena, RN, to reverse and prevent disease naturally. They accept insurance, as well as fee for service, to provide integrative health care. “Prevention is essential; if you give the body what it needs, the body will heal itself,” Dr. Lee says. Scarsdale Integrative Medicine is a unique and innovative team using comprehensive blood, saliva, urine and stool testing to detect underlying causes of disease such as heavy metal toxicity and hormone imbalances, as well as genetic cancer screening. They are open to a variety of approaches to health and well-being, including Chinese herbals, acupuncture, vitamins, medical cannabis, homeopathic remedies, and IV nutrition therapy. Make an appointment for a complimentary functional medicine consultation. Hours: Monday, Tuesday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday to 7 p.m., Saturday to 3 p.m.

o talk about Phelps Medical Associates with Dr. Cynthia Brown, an internist at the 11 Ashford Ave. location — one of three sites Phelps Medical Associates maintains in Dobbs Ferry — of course you will hear about the many health services and benefits the group provides to patients. You will also find that one word repeatedly enters the conversation with Dr. Brown, and that word clearly sums up the Phelps Medical Associates health care story. That one word is: comprehensive. “At Phelps Medical Associates, we are part of the community,” Dr. Brown says. “We get to know our patients — their medical, psychological, and social histories — and we treat the total patient. That is comprehensive medicine.” As an internist, a primary care doctor in a comprehensive medical practice, she can, for example, recommend routine tests and screenings. Most radiology tests can be done right at the Dobbs Ferry office (mammography, bone densitometry, X-ray and ultrasound), and lab specimens can also be collected on-site. “It all happens here,” she says. “This is comprehensive medical care. It covers a simple inoculation like an annual flu shot to complex procedures involving a team of diagnosticians.” Phelps Medical Associates has three locations in Dobbs Ferry. The doctors at 11 Ashford Ave. include four primary care specialists (internal medicine and family medicine)

who promote disease prevention, and diagnose and treat chronic and acute health conditions. The site also has a cardiologist, endocrinologist and gastroenterologist. Obstetrics and gynecology are practiced at 18 Ashford Ave. The doctors there focus on prenatal care, reproductive health, fertility, high-risk pregnancy, family planning, breast health, and gynecological health. Family medicine care is also offered at 20 Beacon Hill Drive. Whereas internists treat only adults, family medicine physicians also care for younger people in the context of their families and the community. If a routine physical reveals that a patient requires intervention by a medical specialist, the Phelps Medical Associates doctors at all three locations have access to their local network of specialists, such as their orthopedists, dermatologists, rheumatologists and other specialists — whatever is required to care for the patient. “We provide a collaborative path to good care for our patients,” Dr. Brown says. Phelps Medical Associates is the primary and specialty care medical group of Phelps Hospital, a 238-bed acute care community hospital in Sleepy Hollow. In 2014, Phelps became part of Northwell Health (formerly known as North Shore-LIJ Health System). Phelps Medical Associates and its patients benefit from the support and resources of Northwell, the largest health care system in New York State. Hours: Medical care is available seven days a week.

estchester Reform Temple, a longtime center of Jewish life in Scarsdale, provides its families with a rewarding spiritual journey, a caring community focus, inspiring educational offerings, and a dedication to the Jewish tradition of repairing the world (tikkun olam). The temple has recently refined its instructional offerings for grades K-12 and is introducing a new curriculum in its Jewish Learning Lab (JLL) program, under the leadership of Rabbi David Levy, director of the JLL. This strong foundation in Jewish history, language, observance and experiential participation has far-reaching potential for young people. It nurtures an appreciation for their Jewish heritage, and engages them in Jewish learning and values that can serve them well throughout their lives. The success of the Jewish Learning Lab curriculum in the early grades is its focus on project-based learning, which turns the classroom into a joyful experience for children in grades K-4. Later, young people are introduced to immersive experiences that draw them out of the classroom for weekend Shabbatons at the temple and off-campus opportunities with clergy to interact with Jewish communities in this country and abroad. In the most advanced grades, students discuss the prospect of college, developing an individual Jewish voice, and preparing to enter the larger world with a strong Jewish identity. The Jewish Learning Lab program is supported by the area’s largest full-time synagogue staff. Classes are held in an intimate setting that fosters close relationships among students and between students and staff. These friendships often carry over far beyond the academic setting into students’ everyday lives and activities. Enrollment is open and ongoing. Office hours: Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Insurance needs change as life progresses. Whether you’re single, married, divorced or widowed; new parents or parents of teens facing college; working hard, running a business, or enjoying retirement, it’s time to learn if your coverage is appropriate. Vivian Lem and her professional team at State Farm are ready, willing and able to help. “We’re local, we know this community and its residents, and are licensed to write a wide variety of commercial and personal lines of insurance in New York and New Jersey,” Vivian says. Preparing for the unexpected is important, and Vivian acknowledges that many people think nothing can happen to them. She begins client meetings with in-depth discussions, leading to important decisions about setting priorities to make insurance purchases based on what clients can afford. An added advantage is using State Farm’s “Discount Double Check” to ensure there are no coverage gaps or overlaps. t’s an exciting moment in the life of Beth El Synagogue Center, which is embarking on a collaborative visioning and strategic planning process. “Journey: Building a Vibrant Future Together,” engages the greater community in a creative reimagining of what it means to be a vibrant congregation. The process is relevant to Beth El members, to the Jewish future and to the wider community. With optimism, open minds and hearts, they are inviting current and future members to join in this journey to discover a vision for Beth El that captures the legacy and values that have provided a strong foundation for our synagogue, while exploring ways to co-create a vibrant and sustainable future. Beth El is more than just a synagogue. It is a thriving center that houses a congregation, a religious school, a nursery school and a day camp. It also presents varied learning programming that is often open to the public. They are an outstanding synagogue, a family. That said, as they look ahead, they know these are times where loyalty to institutions is greatly diminished and the ways Jews self-identify and make meaning of their Judaism are changing rapidly. They realize it is vital to examine how to adapt and thrive amidst this shifting landscape. Moving forward, everyone will have multiple opportunities to participate in conversations about the future. Vision team members will listen to others’ ideas, hopes and dreams, with team members playing key roles in articulating the future direction of Beth El and translating these thoughts into “prototypes,” experiments that move quickly into action toward our desired, bright future.

haarei Tikvah is a friendly, vibrant congregation with an active, engaged membership. The only synagogue in Scarsdale affiliated with the Conservative movement, we warmly welcome Jews of all backgrounds, levels of observance, and sexual orientation. We welcome intermarried couples, incorporating both partners into our community life. Our smaller size fosters an intimacy not found in larger shuls. It’s easy to get involved, build relationships with clergy and staff, and form friendships across generations. Shaarei Tikvah offers a dynamic religious school and a roster of activities for teens, families and adults. Participate in religious services (we’re fully egalitarian). Attend a class or Lunch & Learn. Join our Purim spiel cast. Chop vegetables at a Cooking Day for the hungry. Play softball or enjoy “Vodka and Latkes” with friends. No one goes away hungry from Shaarei Tikvah, especially after our weekly Shabbat Kiddush. We welcome new people, new ideas and new ways of making our services more meaningful. Rabbi Baldachin and Sara Birnbaum, our educational director, are happy to meet with prospective members. Call the office for an appointment. Come visit for services, attend an activity and explore a community where you can feel at home.

Children in two Mount Vernon elementary schools are reaping the rewards of two enrichment programs in the After-School Academy, sponsored by Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS), one of the county’s largest human services agencies. Activities in the “Amazing Afternoons” program at the Edward Williams Elementary School, for grades 1 to 6, and the “Off the Street” program at the Hamilton Elementary School, for grades 2 through 6, begin with a healthy snack for the approximately 120 students in each program. The fun continues with music, books, sports, STEM learning, occasional field trips, and even homework assistance to help the children excel. The storybook hour, co-chaired by volunteers Sarah Kayle, Nina Ross and Cynthia Samwick, is just one of the quality activities popular with kids and their parents. The joy of story improves literacy, encourages discussion, and exposes young people to the world beyond their classrooms and neighborhoods. Assisting with the programs are trained high school students from Mount Vernon and Scarsdale, Westchester Reform Temple volunteers, neighborhood moms, and former students. More volunteers are always needed. Office hours: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Professional musician Cliff Mays teaches and mentors private students of all ages and skill levels within the Rivertowns and Scarsdale areas. Students study guitar, voice, bass, drums, piano and ukulele — plus composition, songwriting and home studio recording. “I’ve been a musician my whole life, teaching successfully for more than 25 years,” Cliff says. “It’s something I love, and together with my students we keep the lessons fun and exciting.” Private lessons are often the key to success. “I take time to listen to why students connect to specific kinds of music, teaching music theory and technique through those songs,” he says. “I help students to feel empowered to play their own music, to follow their own creativity.” Cliff also teaches home studio recording, helping students create great recordings right from home and assisting aspiring musicians, voiceover artists and recording enthusiasts. Where do they find this stuff? Three guys who love comics, punk rock records and books, and horror — lots of horror — started collecting maybe 21 years ago, and now they’ve put it all together in one place — NYHC Comics. A hobby has grown into a business, and serious collectors looking for the rare and in-demand, as well as the just-curious looking for fun are having a blast checking out the inventory — comic book and movie characters, toys, masks, vinyl records, and statues. The stash gets bigger every week. “We love horror,” says Lee Farrelly, who with his partners, Dave DeCicco and Debo Da Pro, opened this amazing place only a year ago — and already it’s been discovered. Are you into zombies? How about Freddy Krueger? Maybe Spider Man for the kids? Whatever pops in pop culture, NYHC has it. “Come on it, and let’s talk comics,” they say. n the age of online purveyors and discount merchandisers, high-quality men’s tailoring is all but gone — but not quite. Nigel’s, one of the newest and most welcome additions to downtown Hastings, has revived the concept of the well-dressed man — the look that immediately says, “This man knows fabric; this man understands fit; this man recognizes quality.” Presiding over Nigel’s is Ali Khatami, an alumnus of Pincus Brothers-Maxwell, one of the venerable names in men’s tailored clothing, and of HickeyFreeman, the American suit manufacturer. Now, with his own brand called “Nigel’s Drape,” modeled after Savile Row suits and other iconic English city and country garments, but with a casual American sensibility, Khatami is making the collection available at his own retail store in Hastings as well as through a wholesale division for top-of-the-line haberdashers across the country. At Nigel’s, the tailored man can purchase readymade or made-to-measure bespoke suits and outerwear, accented by curated accessories, including broadcloth shirts, cashmere sweaters made from the finest yarns, Italian-made jeans and trousers, bench-made shoes, and seven-fold silk ties and pocket squares. Womenswear, too. “Why shouldn’t a woman enjoy the luxury of suits and coats made from menswear cloth?” Khatami observes. “Why can’t a tailored woman bask in the elegance of the finest cashmere sweaters and accessories?” At Nigel’s, she can. “There is always a market for quality,” Khatami says. “There is a soul in well-made clothing.” Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

here’s big news at Salon Topaz, known for the knowledge and expertise of its stylists, its warm and relaxing atmosphere, and its customer care. Salon owner Lisa DeMaria has declared her salon eco-friendly with all-natural, ammonia-free color and styling products. She has completely revamped her product portfolio to reflect her personal concern for the environment and the safety of her customers. With the exclusive use of two new lines — Kevin Murphy, known as “skin care for your hair,” and Eufora for “products that respect the environment and the people who use them” — customers will never have to compromise their health for beautiful hair and skin, Lisa says. In another change, Salon Topaz, has expanded into a fully redesigned interior space that is more comfortable and inviting than ever. Of course, a salon is only as great as its services, and Salon Topaz excels in the services for women and men offered by four stylists and three apprentices: precision cuts, razor cuts, brow tinting and shaping, customized color and highlighting, hair painting, blow-dries, plus scalp treatments for a 20-minute, stress-free spa experience, where customers seem to “melt into the chair,” Lisa says. One of the salon’s essential services is hairstyling and makeup for special occasions, such as weddings, Sweet 16s, proms and bat mitzvahs. Is it any wonder that Westchester magazine has recognized Salon Topaz as best salon and best stylists for the past 11 years! Hours: Tuesday through Saturday. Call or check the website for hours.

Anna Krosche

It’s the call every mother dreads: “Your child has head lice.” No worries. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency.” Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads,” says Anna. She is the area’s only lice removal specialist with a freestanding salon. She also makes house calls. Anna frequently travels to schools and camps to do lice checks and to give presentations on head lice prevention. “I’ve been through this with my own children and myself, and I relate 100 percent to everybody who comes in,” she says. A client’s head is examined under a magnification light, then is given a 20minute, all-natural enzyme-based shampoo. Nits are combed from the hair, then the hair is rinsed, blown dry and rechecked. Clients leave the salon with a homework sheet, including instructions on how to “delouse your house.”

William Sideli and Megan O’Halloran

Husband-and-wife team William Sideli and Megan O’Halloran wanted to launch a showroom for years. After moving to the Rivertowns in 2016, they found it was the ideal community for their venture — one that values shopping local; bustles with architects, interior designers and entrepreneurs; and exudes inspiration and creativity. Their goal is simple: ensuring that luxury, style and functionality thrive in every tile and stone installation. The storefront showcases the diversity and design potential of superior-grade materials hand-sourced from the foremost manufacturers and distributors. Find Akdo, Artistic Tile, Stone Partnership, Nemo, Roca Tile, Clé Tile, Fireclay, Ann Sacks and more, for indoor and outdoor spaces. Tile and stone are durable and provide excellent moisture control; they also convey elegance and personality. Curating spaces with these materials is akin to creating artwork that can last for centuries. Whether a client’s taste is classic, modern or somewhere in between, Sideli Tile & Stone’s offerings are extensive. Customer service is impeccable. Call for information on products and services, to request a price quote or schedule an appointment. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., other times available by appointment.

As wise homeowners know, regular maintenance is cost-effective. And one of the most important ways to maintain the integrity of your house, as well as its good looks, is with a quality paint job. Service Unlimited has been offering Old World craftsmanship to homeowners for more than a quarter of a century. The success of the company is all in the name: Service Unlimited. We are housepainters, but the application of paint is at the end of the job, not the beginning. First comes power-washing to create a clean surface, then scraping off cracked and flaking paint, followed by sanding rough areas. The next step is to apply fresh caulk around doors and windows to prevent moisture from rotting out wood frames. Other pre-paint services include reglazing windows, nailing down loose boards, filling in nail holes, applying a primer/sealer coat of paint, and only then the finishing coat. From Cape Cods to multistory mansions, Service Unlimited means superior customer service, including daily cleanup and exceptional workmanship. Just ask our customers. Office hours: Call anytime.

he Scarsdale real estate market has performed strongly for yet another year — and for another year, we’re leading it. Sixty-seven percent of the homes sold in Scarsdale/ Edgemont this year were listed, sold — or both — by Houlihan Lawrence, giving us not only a 45 percent market share but making our humble brokerage on Popham Road the No. 1 office in all of Westchester County, by total sales volume.* Nobody knows Scarsdale better than our team of 90 agents, one of the largest at any single Houlihan Lawrence branch office. Each of them brings unparalleled experience, expertise and a network that extends well beyond our 30-office, 1,300-agent-strong brokerage to affiliates in more than 56 countries.

Our company’s local roots are unrivaled. Nearly 130 years ago, entrepreneur and philanthropist William Van Duzer Lawrence started our company to market the cutting edge of suburban living, heralding the incredible lifestyle that living north of New York City had to offer. The tools of the trade have changed, but our commitment to innovation — and our communities — remains steadfast. We’re constantly arming our agents and their clients with the latest technologies. We have the most comprehensive market data of any area brokerage, and the ability to generate it on demand, in real time. Connect with us and discover the Houlihan Lawrence difference. Hours: Open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment. Source: HGMLS: $1MM+; 1/1/2017-9/30/2017; total volume single-family by company
