Scarsdale High School Class of 2017

Messages of courage, love and service for 100th graduating class By VALERIE ABRAHAMS

S

weltering heat and a threat of heavy rain didn’t dampen the spirited crowd’s enthusiasm as 402 students, their families, friends and teachers gathered in the gym for Scarsdale High School’s 100th commencement June 23. With the milestone event moved into the gyms rather than on the school’s William Dean Field as was planned, the processional entered as the SHS Symphonic Band played “Pomp and Circumstance” conducted by Jason Noble, and members of the senior choir ensemble sang the national anthem. Marking the end of their childhood education and the beginning of their journey into adulthood, the students heard speeches from the high school principal, members of the school board, their student government and their faculty advisors. Scarsdale Board of Education president Leila Maude said the students and their families should feel proud of their accomplishments achieved both inside and outside of school. She advised the students in coming years to value how Scarsdale, one of the best public schools in the country, has nurtured their heads, hands, hearts and souls. “You leave with the tools to succeed and bring good to the world,” Maude said. “You have learned that, when you collaborate, you can create value and innovation.” Maude urged the graduates to preserve the relationships they made with their friends, coaches and teachers, and to represent Scarsdale in the global community by upholding the district motto, non sibi, not for oneself. “Your mission is to listen, consider and engage … to volunteer and become active in your community, vote and care deeply for people around you,” she said. Recalling the highlights of four years as 2017 class faculty advisors, Eileen Cagner, aka “Ms. Swagner,” and Heather Waters said the hallmark of this year’s graduating class is its sense of community and service to others. This year’s graduating seniors held holiday parties at homeless shelters, sent candy and letters to U.S. troops, served dinners at soup kitchens and raised money for numerous charities. The class also established new, inclusive traditions at school, such as sophomore-freshman movie night and a unifying theme for costumes so everyone would fit in the fun at the seniors’ Halloween breakfast party. Waters encouraged the graduates to continue caring for others. “In a world where you can be anything, be kind,” she said. “Remember the path home and come back and be role models.”

Caroline Kaufman, winner of the Henry David Thoreau Award. The award is given each year to a highly respected senior — as selected by classmates — who marches to a different drummer.

Cagner echoed that message. “Be kind to each other and to yourselves,” she said, advising the graduates to find “the balance between making your mark and feeding your soul.” Wishing the group much success, Cagner quoted Willy Wonka, the subject of this year’s senior class play, saying, “If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it. Anything you want to, do it; want to change the world ... there’s nothing to it.” Class of 2017 president Alex Lane joked about the class being “incredibly good looking” though not particularly good at school spirit or attendance at organized events. But, he said, they always showed a consistent willingness to bond with as many people as possible beyond a core group of friends, as reflected in the “crazy inclusivity and togetherness” at their prom. Lane encouraged his classmates to cherish that “unique sense of unity” and find a “web of people you feel a true connection with” in the future. In his speech to the graduates, Principal Kenneth Bonamo compared the world today with the world a century ago, when SHS held its first commencement. In 1917, World War I was ending, the U.S. was emerging as a world power, women’s right to vote was not yet guaranteed, and airplanes and radio were very recent inventions. Many people didn’t have electricity, telephones or automobiles, and most “teenagers” — a word not yet coined — got jobs rather than college educations. “We are grateful for all that makes our lives significantly better,” Bonamo said. “Your generation will face your share of challenges without easy solutions.” He challenged the students to engage in dialogue, understanding and building consensus as they are called

upon to solve future problems. “I hope we have engaged you in thinking about these larger questions and equipped you with the skills necessary to make progress,” he said. Most of all, Bonamo said, there is a shared hope the graduating seniors will have a life filled with intellectual engagement and purpose; he urged the graduates to leave a legacy of love. “The key to your success … will be to infuse love in your work, in your relationships and in your self-regard,” Bonamo said. After receiving their diplomas from Superintendent of Schools Thomas Hagerman, the class of 2017 tossed its caps in the air and went on to celebrate with family and friends.

Edgemont High School Class of 2017

Edgemont graduating class recalls personal growth and lessons for the future By ROBERT CHRISTIE

H

undreds of parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters and friends gathered at Edgemont High School June 21 to see the 61st time an EHS graduating class tossed its caps in the air. One hundred and fifty-four students walked across the stage and received their diplomas on a night in which the theme for each of the students who spoke was remembering just how far this year’s graduating class has come. Nandini Saxena, the evening’s first speaker recalled the students’ experience first setting foot on the Edgemont Junior and Senior High School campus as middle schoolers. “We, as middle schoolers, had the greatest passion to pester our teachers with questions,” Saxena said. “We had no idea what we were doing, but that was OK.” Along the way, she said, the students learned they needed more than just good grades to succeed. “We needed a personality,” Saxena said, “a way to be carefree and some positivity. Even though the struggles were real, being lighthearted [helped] us.” Priya Gandhi, the third student speaker of the ceremony, also thought back to her middle school days. “I walked into class for the first time in seventh grade and I was tall for my age, awkward, I was scared of my teachers and other students,” Gandhi said. “So much has changed since then.” Gandhi said as she grew older “the labels [she] used to define [herself] have vanished.” “The classes I’ve taken, the clubs I’ve been in, the daily social interactions of life on campus; so much has ended,” she said. “Suddenly, a different person has shown up, a person the seventh grade me wouldn’t recognize. Although the seventh-grade me does still show up sometimes — I’m still pretty tall and, depending on the situation, awkward. But that’s the point of being a person; the layers you gather and things you remember.” The night’s second student speaker, James Brandfonbrener, looked into what the graduation actually meant for the students receiving their diplomas. “On one hand, this is a culmination of our 13 years of education, and on the other hand, this is a scripted exercise that shows very little of the people that we’ve become,” Brandfonbrener said. He said he learned being in school is not all about perfection. “Even though we may forget some of what we’ve learned here,” Brandfonbrener said, “Edgemont has given us this much and for our future in general — there will never be any easy solutions and there will always be imperfections. For me personally, I ended up realizing I didn’t want to become someone that was obsessed with perfection, even though, at times, I thought that’s who I’d want to be. It’s important to challenge ourselves but to not beat ourselves up about the outcome.” Each of the three students also relayed to their friends and family the lessons they took from Edgemont High School as they step into college life. “Personal wisdom is really what we carry with us when we leave,” Brandfonbrener said. “Those are the things you can’t forget when you’re really in the thick of it all. In the end, it’s the person you become and not the grades that we earn that affect us.” Gandhi shared Brandfonbrener’s sentiments, acknowledging that failing does not mean you lack fortitude. “Strength is to be free of self-doubt and still [be able] to

fail,” she said. “To fail and to fail and to never know how things will turn out. Strength is to give ourselves time to be lost ... to let life happen to us and to make life happen to us.” Saxena remembered some of the tangible lessons the fu-

ture college students learned. “Along the way, we’ve gained several academic skills,” she said, “from learning how to study, to breaking down large concepts.” She also showed gratitude to those both at school and at home who helped the students reach this milestone. “Thank you all parents and siblings for following us through our ups and downs,” Saxena said. “The support we received from you is beyond words … It would not be a commencement if we did not appreciate the most unsung heroes of any generation, the teachers. As John Steinbeck once said, ‘I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist, and that there are as few as there are other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.’”

Scarsdale Alternative School Class of 2017

Howard Rodstein retires, 28 graduate By VALERIE ABRAHAMS

T

he 44th Scarsdale Alternative School graduation June 16 was a bittersweet affair. It not only marked the end of high school for 28 seniors, but also marked the end of a long career for A-School Director Howard Rodstein, who will retire after 39 years as an educator in Scarsdale schools. Rodstein served 12 years as director, which overlapped with his 19 years as the program’s English teacher. Social studies teacher Jennifer Maxwell will take over the director’s position in the fall. Also this year, two educators joined the A-School team: Ava Laera as dean and Michael Giordano as science teacher. As Rodstein prepared to graduate along with the ASchool class of 2017, SHS Assistant Principal Chris Renino praised him for being a teacher who has always taught with passion and commitment. “Howard is the innovator who shaped this program and, in so doing, has touched and shaped [the graduates],” Renino said. Equipped with skills that will serve them well as they set out into the world, A-School graduates should “cut life’s challenges down to size, carve out your territory and throw yourself in,” Renino said. Speaking about the school’s alternative approach, Rodstein said, “This democratic community strives for justice and caring … It’s a living, breathing creature that derives its character or personality from those of us who have chocontinued on page 11A

Hersch said its unique grading system, internship program and classroom dynamic make the ASchool different from the larger high school, and the informality and smaller scale of the program allow close relationships that encourage true respect among teachers and students. Hersch said those factors had “a large effect on learning” and transformed him personally into an active learner who is better able to absorb and manage criticism. Paying tribute to Rodstein, Hersch said, “He models playfulness, has the boundless curiosity of a child and sees the world as a place of wonder… often punctuated by vigorous nodding.” Hersch urged his classmates to be guided by Rodstein’s ideals, voice their own ideas, learn from failure and always pursue fairness. Laera and Giordano attended the commencement, which differs from the main school’s because
