he real estate market in Scarsdale, and many other neighborhoods in southern Westchester, has been incredibly resilient over the past year with prices remaining steady and even growing since 2010. With convenient access to New York City, a vibrant village and renowned architecture, people continue to flock to Scarsdale as our agents look forward to a busy fall and new year. As the largest family-owned and -operated residential real estate brokerage in Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties — and one of the 15 top-selling brokerages in the U.S. — Houlihan Lawrence has earned a stellar reputation for the remarkable service it provides its clients and the neighborhoods it serves. The company is renowned throughout the Scarsdale community for its market leadership, client resources and commitment to community activism. Houlihan Lawrence’s Scarsdale brokerage maintained its leadership position and market share position in the Scarsdale area in 2011, completing 51 percent of the village’s single-family sales transactions by dollar volume, and outstripping its closest competitor by a margin of nearly four to one. The Scarsdale office once again expanded its professional sales staff, making it one of the most desirable brokerages in all of Westchester. With more than 80 agents, the team is one of the largest in the firm, boasting the ideal combination of seasoned professionals and newer agents, and represents some of the most prominent developers and clients in the area. Throughout 2011, the office has consistently led the county in dollar-volume production. Houlihan Lawrence prides itself on providing the most comprehensive real estate services available to both its agents and clients. The company has rapidly grown in many significant areas in 2011 with newly launched initiatives including an updated version of the company’s popular website featuring current, hyperlocal market data and statistics, as well as a content-rich blog.

www.houlihanlawrence.com

Affiliations with Thoroughbred Mortgage and Thoroughbred Title Services have added to a seamless transaction process and have also enabled Houlihan Lawrence to offer the most competitive rates in the title insurance industry available. Additionally, the company continued to roll-out an extensive video series of town guides featuring community residents, local business owners and public officials giving candid insights to potential homebuyers of what it is like to live in the towns throughout Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties. Recognizing the shifting market conditions, clients are increasingly drawing on the extensive insight and understanding of the firm’s agents for the best strategies to deal with the current environment. Fortunately for these clients, Houlihan Lawrence’s seasoned professionals also bring the experience of past real estate cycles and are able to utilize Houlihan Lawrence’s detailed monthly and quarterly market reports. These reports provide information on all market activity throughout Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess, including month-over-month, year-to-date and market data from the previous 10 years. As the brokers remain dedicated to serving their customers, they are also committed to the community at large. Houlihan Lawrence continues to support charitable causes in Scarsdale and throughout Westchester. Recently, the firm took action to protect the environment and lent its support to the Greenburgh Nature Center’s natural history exhibit, “The Way of Water,” focusing on Westchester watersheds. The firm also remains committed to local hospitals, sponsoring the Scarecrow Festival to benefit the White Plains Hospital pediatric department. One of the office’s most noteworthy endeavors is its annual sponsorship of the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in October. Throughout the year, Houlihan Lawrence also proudly supports the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, Pediatric Cancer Foundation, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, National MS Society, Heartsong, Westchester Chamber Orchestra, New Choral Society, Junior League, Scarsdale Adult School, Kids’ B.A.S.E. and The Little School, veterans, police and fire departments, Maroon & White, and PTAs throughout the area. As Westchester’s leading residential real estate brokerage firm, Houlihan Lawrence boasts more than 1,000 dedicated agents in its 24 regional offices. Houlihan Lawrence attracts extensive global business, through its founding membership in Leading Real Estate Companies of the World, and exclusive affiliations with Christie’s International Real Estate, Luxury Portfolio, and Mayfair International Realty, a leading London-based luxury realty group, extending the company’s reach into the U.K. and Europe. Houlihan Lawrence’s vast portfolio of services is extended to every client and encompasses core values of integrity, excellence, passion and community — the standards that set the company apart from its competition.

When A&M Table owners Michele Brettschneider and Alyson Lane moved here from New York City, they realized there was a missing link in the Westchester area for contemporary and eclectic tabletop décor and home accessories. “There wasn’t a place to find modern gifts and tabletop items that appeal to all budgets,” says Michele. “This season’s popular items have included trays by Alexandra VonFurstenburg, bowls by Stelton for Paul Smith, Kim Seybert napkins and placemats, agate trivets, and pony-skin and horn serving trays.” A&M Table is trendy and fashion-forward, and its clients need only describe a dining room and A&M’s owners and staff will find the perfect placemats, napkin rings, glassware and serving pieces. Looking for that special hostess gift or container for flowers? A&M has a wide range of options! Gift cards are available; gift wrapping is complimentary. Check us out on Facebook. estchester magazine’s Best Shop Reinvention for 2011 was recently awarded to Outerluxe, in recognition of this boutique’s evolution into a full-fashion resource. Helen and Joe Barlow have now expanded their offerings to dress their clientele from head to toe. The Barlows have built a loyal following for their newest addition — a beautifully edited selection of dresses for bar/bat mitzvahs, weddings and black-tie events. Made-to-measure dresses are also offered, and designer fittings ensure perfect fabric, color, fit and feel. From apparel and accessories to footwear, “our limited-quantity, niche lines from emerging designers set us and our customers apart,” says Helen. Add panache with imported hand-loomed sweaters, luxurious scarves in timeless prints and fabrications, plus a generous selection of designer denim and tops and you’ll find complete looks for day or night. The Barlows help customers develop signature styles, with choices driven by attention to detail, execution and fabrication. Their relentless vision is to personalize the shopping experience and keep the ambience honest and pressure-free. Outerluxe’s “bespoke” shearling collection is designed and produced in its workroom and provides superb after-sales service: hand-cleaning of shearling, fur, leather and suede as well as alterations. The Barlows suggest you “Rethink Your Mink”: bring in a properly stored and cared-for fur and they’ll shear, shape and remake it into a new coat, vest or cashmerebacked throw. The Outerluxe menswear collection focuses strictly on “casual weekend wear.” Joe believes “it can be very challenging for guys to put together modern, relaxed looks for weekend nights out on the town.” It all starts with the right jean. From there, Outerluxe offers tissue-weight Italian cashmere knits, double-faced washed-cotton button-downs and handcrafted belts from Italy. One of the most popular men’s collections is Psycho Bunny, a line that offers novelty socks and ties as well as fabulous estate cashmere scarves and knit caps — all with the infamous Psycho Bunny logo. Whether you need help finding the perfect piece for an important event or are placing a special order in a hard-to-find size, at Outerluxe, you’ll never be left out in the cold. Fan Outerluxe on Facebook to learn about special events, private sales and more! Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment.

Founded in 2011 by Lawrence Pitonza, Pitonza Productions promotes cooperation and understanding through multicultural and bilingual literature, giving children a sense of family values, understanding and the importance of appreciating the “you” that you are. Lawrence graduated from Purchase College, where he studied under Antonio Frisconi, a world-renowned art-of-the-book creator. Lawrence is also a Westchester hairdresser at Salon Vivace. He works with Hollywood A-listers in photo shoots, commercials, special effects and prosthetics, costume and mask design, wig creations, and set and prop fabrications. He recently wrote and illustrated the book, “Cosmic Carol: Adventures in Color,” to spread the message, “Be you. Be true!” He offers a children’s program called “Autographs With Carol,” where his book is read aloud in a group setting. Afterwards, the children meet and greet Cosmic Carol characters and get their favorite characters’ autographs. “Cosmic Carol: Adventures In Color” is a touching story of a girl from another planet who, along with her pet star, Tippy, is sent to Earth to learn a lesson. During her visit, Cosmic Carol gains friends, but loses her ability to see in color. It’s a story of friendship, respect, learning — and most of all, acceptance of someone “different.” The book was inspired by Lawrence’s mother’s disability of total color blindness. The book can be purchased through Pitonza’s website: cosmiccarol.com.

win Lakes Farm offers something for everyone — from riders who take lessons once a week and simply enjoy being around horses to serious show riders with specific career plans. The region’s largest academy and competitive show stable, Twin Lakes Farm has two campuses, each one set on seven acres, and surrounded by miles of trails in the 160 acres of protected parkland in the Eastchester/Bronxville area. Between the two campuses, there are more than 100 stalls. Indoor and lighted outdoor riding rings enable year-round riding. Boarding, horse showing, leasing, summer leasing, birthday parties and summer camp are available. Twin Lakes Farm’s riding professionals teach English riding and horsemanship to children and adults in a safe, fun and welcoming environment. What Makes Zachys Different? When my father-in-law, Don Zacharia, purchased Zachys from his father in 1961, he had two visions for the business. First, to introduce fine wine from around the world to a client base that had historically been spirits driven. And secondly, to provide the utmost in customer service and always try to do it with knowledge, humor, flexibility and personality. What was true to Don and his two employees back in 1961 still rings true at Zachys today. We continue to strive to have one of the most complete selections of fine wines and spirits in America. It is not enough for us to have the wine on our shelves but rather to take the time and energy to regularly travel throughout the wine world — seek out the gems — and bring them back to Scarsdale. One of Don’s greatest successes over the last four decades of selling fine wine was his “What Makes Zachys Differentâ€? advertising campaign. This was a series of ads in which he enabled the wine-loving community to learn more about the personalities and activities at Zachys — those things that set it apart from others. With stories like ‌ the sales manager who joined us 30 years ago because his train broke down in Scarsdale and he decided to wait while they serviced the train and applied for a job. Or the personal trainer who had a love for wine and took the part-time job in his free hours in the evening. With a working knowledge of computers, he told us the age of the Internet was coming and he now heads up all the IT operations for the enterprise. Then there was the leading salesman in the store, who has a medical degree but chooses to sell wine because it’s his passion. The customers line up to walk the store, pick his brain and soak up his enthusiasm for wine. And the stories just go on and on and on ... What I take such great pride in when interviewing potential new employees for the store, is making the statement that Zachys would not be half of what it is today

without the great people who work here. It’s staggering the number of employees we have with us currently who have worked for us for 10 years or more. And it’s about the people. People walk through the door at Zachys to be met with a comforting smile and the typical question: “Have you shopped with us before? We want to make you feel welcome as you enter a wine world that is overloaded with regions, varietals and bottles after bottles — so much so that it can be very intimidating. We want you to walk away from your Zachys’ experience with a smile and the satisfaction that this was everything you expected and more. Our philosophy and policy is just the same on the phone, email or website. While those platforms don’t afford as much personal contact, it is our hope to convey to our clients that we are about much more than the wine. We want you to know we are a complete package that is here to service all your wine needs. It’s nice, that although started more than 40 years ago, Zachys has managed to stay true to Don’s goals and we always continue to be a truly special place in the wine world. All my best, Andrew McMurray (aka The Son-In-Law) Hours: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. For more information on special offers, complimentary in-store tastings, and our great selection of wine, visit us at zachys.com. The art of delicious food has shaped Salvatore Cucullo Jr.’s life. As a boy, he worked in his grandfather’s pizzeria, and later at a family-owned restaurant. No one was surprised when Salvatore attended the Culinary Institute of America, followed by an externship at the exclusive CafĂŠ des Artistes in New York. In May 2010, he and business partner Lynn Kozy opened The 808 Bistro, where every customer feels like a part of the family. Salvatore, also the chef, says his cuisine is described as “Italian without bordersâ€? — with French, Asian, Mediterranean and Latin influences. Using only the freshest, predominantly organic ingredients, the menu’s updated frequently to keep it seasonal. “I’m very passionate about food and believe as a chef that I’m never more important than my ingredients,â€? says Salvatore. Traditional Italian chicken, veal and fish are always offered, and the restaurant accommodates special requests. The bar uses fresh, muddled ingredients to make drinks, and suggested food and wine pairings are always on the menu. New at The 808 Bistro is our “expressâ€? lunch. Step into La Catena’s warm, inviting dining room and get a taste of Tuscany. Veteran restaurateur Emilio Delija is the creative force behind this Northern Italian eatery, already a local favorite after just a year in business. Emilio presents the classics and some wonderful surprises, all emphasizing local ingredients, homemade pastas and the freshest meats and fish. Although the atmosphere is relaxed and casual, be prepared for some tableside excitement. The restaurant’s honey-sweet, real Dover sole and Mediterranean bronzino are deboned and sauced right in front of you. Fettuccine with a trio of wild mushrooms and a shimmer of cream are tossed in a bowl made out of a hollowed-out wheel of Parmigiano-Reggiano, then ignited with cognac. Desserts are homemade: try the white chocolate strawberry shortcake, or some raspberry zabaglione. La Catena has a private party room that comfortably holds up to 100 people. Emilio can create the perfect menu for your next party or meeting, and can also cater your next at-home celebration. Hours: Lunch: Monday through Sunday, from noon to 3 p.m. Dinner: Sunday through Thursday, from 3 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday to 11 p.m.

Ruffled Feathers Gourmet Rotisserie, the popular takeout spot, is now entering its 20th year, and its delicious prepared foods have become standard fare in most homes in and around Scarsdale. Owners Ken and George specialize in preparing healthy and low-fat foods using the best and freshest ingredients available. t doesn’t happen overnight, but there are usually warning signs when the well-being of your parent is compromised by living alone. Here are some common clues that are cause for concern: Change in eating habits — skipping meals or not eating, and losing weight as a result. Change in mood — seeming depressed, irritable, excessively fearful or boisterous. Increased isolation — no longer enjoying family visits or familiar social routines. Hygiene neglect — wearing soiled clothes, not brushing teeth or bathing, resulting in bad breath or body odor. Frequent bruising, burns or injuries — signaling increased falling, weakness or confusion. Increased forgetfulness — ignoring mail and newspapers, missing appointments or becoming disoriented. Inadequate, spoiled or the wrong kind of food in the house. Misusing medication or alcohol. Gradual decline in household upkeep and maintenance. Mishandling finances — not paying bills, appropriating money to questionable causes, spending beyond means or hoarding cash. As soon as your aging parent starts to show deterioration in health and the condition of home, take notice. This is the time to introduce the idea of getting assistance, long before a crisis develops. Seek support from other family members to consider what choices are best and realistic for all involved. If in-home care is not adequate, or if moving your parent into your home is not an option,

then assisted living is worth considering. The role reversal of aging parents and children is a common challenge The Kensington can help manage. When the time comes to have “the talk” with your parent, here are some tips to help make it a little easier: Be specific — use factual examples to explain why you think assistance is a good idea. Express concern from your point of view and explain how much you care — do not accuse or demand. Be patient — you will likely have this conversation more than once. Tread slowly and gently — describe how you want to be able to enjoy each other, and that preserving health and safety would make that possible. Solicit your parent’s thoughts, feelings and opinions. Some adults welcome the idea of change. But others are resistant, even when the need for assistance is obvious. If you’re running into conflict, then talk with Susie Sarkisian, geriatric care manager at The Kensington, an enhanced assisted living residence that recently opened at 100 Maple Ave. in White Plains. Susie is an expert at helping families introduce the idea of moving to an assisted living community, and she follows the transition all the way through till move-in day — and after. For answers to your questions, call Susie at 390-0080, or visit online at TheKensingtonAL.com.

eace, love and dogs has been the mantra at Buddy’s Barking Lot for the past seven years. Eileen Fleming and Susan Ekaireb are the happy owners of Buddy’s. Both are extremely proud of their staff of professionals, most of whom have been working at Buddy’s since its inception. There is even a full-time dog trainer, Wanda, on staff each day. The canine clients at Buddy’s Barking Lot range in size from 4 pounds all the way up to 180 pounds. There is a sense of calm among the pack each day, and they treat one

another as if they are one big happy family. There are no crates or cages, and all of the dogs coexist peacefully. The pack welcomes each newcomer with “open paws.” The secret to the peace is in the doggie interview. “Each dog is interviewed just to make sure they would be comfortable in our setting,” Eileen says. “We can’t and won’t allow any dogs with aggressive tendencies.” To schedule an interview for your dog, or for more information, please contact Buddy’s Barking Lot at 591-7645. Neetu, Talibah, Ellen and Dr. Gregg Fader

After running orthodontic practices in Manhattan, Queens and Ardsley for more than 20 years, Dr. Gregg Fader is thrilled to be celebrating his fourth anniversary in his Scarsdale office on Central Avenue! Dr. Fader’s original interest in dentistry came from his father, a retired dentist; his love of children directed him toward orthodontics. Dr. Fader treats both children and adults, keeping current with the latest advances in orthodontics. In addition to metal and clear braces, he can also fit patients with the nearly imperceptible Invisalign braces, particularly helpful for adults who wish to improve their smile, but also need to feel confident in a business setting. Ardsley Orthodontics offers free first consultations to patients, during which Dr. Fader will assess any problems with the bite or jaw, and give a time frame and competitive price for treatment. His philosophy stresses nonextraction, trying to limit treatment to as short a time as possible, and only to one stage if possible. There is ample, free parking. Hours: By appointment, including Saturday and evenings.

his month, Phelps Memorial Hospital Center opened a new 18,000-square-foot state-of-the-art emergency medical facility holding twice as many patient beds as their former emergency department. The new ER facility rivals the finest emergency departments in the country for patient comfort, efficiency and service. More than 22,000 patients are treated in the emergency department at Phelps Hospital every year, and that number is expected to grow as the population ages and more development occurs in the towns and villages along the Hudson River. In an effort to accommodate this growth, the new emergency department at Phelps places emphasis on patients’ physical and emotional comfort. As patients enter the ER, they are greeted by the soothing sounds of a waterfall. Rather than sitting in a waiting room, patients are brought directly into private rooms with walls, sliding glass doors and curtains for privacy, where they are registered, evaluated and treated. Each room features a television, a telephone and two chairs so that family members can remain comfortably nearby. Family members who do not wish to be present during an evaluation can wait in the family waiting areas. Over the past year, Phelps has been increasing Dr. Majid Sabour and the depth of pediatric services it offers. As evidence

of that commitment, the new emergency department has a separate pediatric treatment area with five child-friendly rooms specially decorated for children, and an adjacent playroom with computer games. Ten of the 32 treatment rooms are designated for the PromptCare area, a modern, fast-track service that provides rapid assessment and treatment of less urgent medical problems. Conversely, if a patient is to be admitted to the hospital, he or she remains in a private room, situated in a separate, quiet area of the emergency department until a hospital bed is available. The new facility also has designated treatment rooms for specialized services, including trauma; obstetrics/gynecology; psychiatry; orthopedics; dentistry; minor surgery; and eye, ear, nose and throat. The new department has its own 24-hour radiology suite, complete with digital X-ray technology and a 64-slice CT scanner with cardiac capabilities, so the wait for diagnostic tests and results is significantly shorter. For patients with infectious conditions, or who require decontamination due to radiological, biological or chemical emergencies, the new facility has dedicated isolation and decontamination units with the latest technology and protective Dr. Catalina E.equipment. Cincu Each of these units has a separate ventilation system to prevent cross-contamination.

or quality imaging — X-ray, CT scans, MRI, digital mammography, bone density and more — trust the professionals of Hudson Valley Radiology Associates of Westchester. Its Tuckahoe office opened in 2008 and features the latest in cutting-edge medical advances. Free indoor parking is an added convenience. Medical director and Scarsdale resident Dr. Neville Glajchen emphasizes that the practice’s radiologists are all board-certified by the American Board of Radiology and the majority have additional fellowship training in specialized areas of radiology, including breast imaging, neuroradiology, interventional radiology, musculoskeletal and nuclear medicine. Additional specialties are high-risk pregnancy imaging, maternal fetal medicine, fetal echocardiography and fetal MRI. For younger athletes, MRI arthrograms are particularly helpful in giving additional information about a condition. A new generation of digital technology has revolutionized mammography, resulting in earlier and more accurate diagnoses and fewer “repeat views.” Hudson Valley Radiology offers alldigital mammography, which streamlines the process by eliminating darkroom processing of films. Images are sent to the most qualified specialist to interpret, allowing for very high-quality readings. Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, breast MRI and MRI-guided biopsy are also available on an outpatient basis. Not only are Hudson Valley Radiology’s physicians, technologists and staff members highly skilled professionals, they’re particularly aware of the stresses and concerns patients may feel while undergoing testing and treatment. They offer guidance and support at every point of a patient’s visit, a personal touch not found at many imaging centers. To learn more about Hudson Valley Radiology Associates of Westchester, its Tuckahoe office and other locations, call for an appointment.

Anna Krosche

It’s the call every mother dreads: “Your child has head lice.” No worries. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency.” Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads,” says Anna. She is the area’s only lice removal specialist with a freestanding salon. She also makes house calls. Anna frequently travels to schools and camps to do lice checks and to give presentations on head lice prevention. “I’ve been through this with my own children and myself, and I relate 100 percent to everybody who comes in,” she says. A client’s head is examined under a magnification light, then is given a 20minute, all-natural enzyme-based shampoo. Nits are combed from the hair, then the hair is rinsed, blown dry and rechecked. Clients leave the salon with a homework sheet, including instructions on how to “delouse your house.”

you already have a security system, we’d like the opportunity to provide a free security review of your premises to be sure the system is giving you proper protection. We hope you will choose Scarsdale Security Systems as your security provider, as have so many of your neighbors, the retail stores you patronize, and more than 75 school districts in New York state. Our company, which is locally owned and operated, is recognized as one of the best run, most efficient and reliable organizations in the industry. Let us show you a working model demonstration and provide a free, no-obligation security and fire appraisal of your home. This 30-minute investment in time can yield a lifetime dividend in peace of mind for you and your family. Remember, with Scarsdale Security Systems, you get the Home Team Advantage. Hours: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
