ABOUT THE STUDIO The first-semester Studio at Faculty of Planning PG programs is called ‘Understanding the City’ Studio. The studio aims to develop intimate understanding of a city and equips the students with conceptual, methodological, analytical, and communication skills necessary for becoming a professional urbanist. This studio focuses on an evidence-based approach for framing and analyzing complex urban development dynamics.
ABOUT THE SITE A city has its functional ,spatial and agglomerative pattern to it which developed eventually based on the determinats affecting it. Ahmedabad as it co-exits with the east of Sabarmati river marking the old city and the new city to the west . Both the urban settings have its own identity in terms of typology, built use,FSI,building heights, spatial fabric, etc. These characteristics were studied in the Understanding the city Studio of Foundation studio,2019. The Ahmedabad to the east lies the neighbourhood Shahpur -Dariyapur, precinct study area of 1 Sq Km, well connected to the west through the Sabaramati River by the Gandhi Bridge. The study is conducted based on the spatial and economic development of the city and the determinants that lead to the informal setting of the precinct. The study is conducted through primary and secondary analysis. The precinct has more of an informal urban fabric compared to the west .The major job centres orient to informal sector and so is the main source of income .The people are highly dependent on the precinct for their livelihood as majority of the population works in the informal sectors in the precinct and this also makes it a walkable city for commuting. “The informal sector in Ahmedabad is essential to the city’s future in the underground economy, says former municipal commissioner of Ahmedabad I.P Gautam” (India, 2009). Shahpur as a precinct of area 100 hectare in the east of Ahmedabad has been documented and analysed as a part of the academic foundation studio for its physical and economic development throughout its evolution from the dynamic history.
5
Major Determinants that led to the development of informal sector In the city of old Ahmedabad in the east lies the neighbourhood of Shahpur -Dariyapur well connected to the west through the Sabaramati River by the Gandhi Bridge. The precinct is located at 4 km east of Cept University .The Gandhi bridge marks the starting of the precinct. The arterial road which is the Kasturba Gandhi road which is 42 m wide runs through the precinct diving it to the walled city and its immediate surroundings.
People’s perception of the precinct
Legends
The precinct as perceived by people is an informal neighbourhood which is both their home and their job centre.A majority of the precinct activities and its spatial fabric exhibit its informality. People identify the precinct by the informal job centres such as the industrial areas ,the informal market spaces such as the Lala kaka market ,the old cloth market, the vendors on the streets and the religious centres. The majority of the people are migrants from the neighbouring cities or states predominantly working in the informal job centres. The precinct has a mixed spatial fabric on the north of the Kasturba Gandhi road consisting of semi detached houses, detached houses, apartments, slums, commercial centres, retails, vendors, industries, etc. The inside walled city has residential typology predominantly old apartments and row houses .This area has the muslim religious centres like mosques and dargahs.
6
Evolution timeline...
The riots resulted in the relative concentration of Hindus and Muslims in each neighbourhood across the walled city. The Hindus moved outside the city wall and to the west of Sabarmati.
The downfall of textile mills headway to the informal sector.People settled near to the job centres which resulted in unorganised setllements near to the trasit corridors .

Jantri rates and market rates along the Transit Corridor Market rates are higher than the jantri rates. The rates are high along the developments . The AMC plots and the commercial areas have higher market rates. The jantri rates were not revised after 2011, due to which there is huge difference in market rates and jantri after the precinct developmets .As the market rates are much higher than the Jantri rates the lower economic class will not be able to afford it. But as this precinct is owned or rented by the people for ages they continue to stay there .For a new migrant with lower monthly income ,it will be unaffordable to buy a property here.
Jantri and Market Rates Jantri rates are higher inside the walled city but market rates are higher outside the walled city due to the developments
1.Sabarmati riverfront development 2.BRTS Corridor 3.AMTS transit corridors 4.Kasturba gandhi road connecting west of Ahmedabad and Kalupur Station.

The impact of the informal sectors over the precinct-Waste generation A comparison study on the same parameters in another 12 different areas of Ahmedabad(East And west) which are Bodakdev, Juhapura, Nikol, Motera, Lambha, Shastrinagar, Rakhial, Naroda and Paldi is studied to understand the waste generation and disposal .Shahpur has one of the highest amount of waste generated inAhmedabad per day (36 Ton) There is a need for an efficient waste segregation and collection system at the precinct level. Due to the negligence towards few localities, the non-segregated wastes are dumped at society entrances, on road sides and junctions. The public realm and the major streets and its junction form the the dumping ground of waste throughout the precinct.
High density area Less connectivity Not easily acccessible.More number of dead ends
2nd highest generator Road sides and junctions are the major dumping ground in the precinct after the removal of the silver bins.

High Street Connectivity promoting the informal economy
AMTS and BRTS system as the major public trasportation system that connects the precinct to other destinations The graph shows that 19% of the females prefer walking to their job centres as they are at walkable distance .While 29% of the males prefer 2 wheeler as their mode of transport to commute which shows that 2 wheelers are the most affordable means of transport to commute to long distances.
High connectivity High Accessibility
10
Uneven concentration of population in the residential sector With a population of 66,007 and being a high population of migrants (64%) ,a informal development pattern is observed in the spatial fabric. The percapita area is less compared to the number of people residing in a residential setting. The graph (figure 3.1.1) shows that the number of family members is much higher compared to the per capita area in row housing and slums. This means more number of people are accomodated in less area. The map shows the population density in each block .The map shows that population density is high outside the walled city area of the precinct .

The Streets as Public realm
Monument at the market square -Imageability The edges of the street marks the identification of the place .
The building skyline
It marks the clarity of the space .It demarcates the rhythm and proportion of a public realm .
Scale
As the building height gets higher tha pedestrians uding the market space will feel more enclosed inside the space as the skyline is not visible from the ground level .

High density Informal Job centres Home Work
Proximity to work place High connectivity
Streets are where we make our livelihood
Job Density
Vending has the highest job density of 86% ,then industrial (8%) and commercial (3%).As discussed earlier it is clear by the job density that the informal sector jobs employs more number of population of the precinct.

Predominantly low- middle income group
.As the number of unskilled laborers is more the monthly income received is also lower. To study this a sample study of 30 households units of the precinct was taken through survey. The monthly income of 84% of the working population is below Rs 60,000 (Sample survey) The low income group below Rs25,000 is 32%.These low income population is employed under the informal
job sectors .Apart from this the informal indutrial sectors of the precinct job centres (34% ) employ the population of precinct under casual and contract basis.
