Letter from the Regional Chairperson

Dear the people of tomorrow,

0

ur strength lies within the core philosophy that we have always been upholding: Knowledge, Action, and Friendship. In knowledge, we open our eyes to the global medical knowledge across Asia Pacific and beyond. In action, we are keen on giving positive impact through both medical or non medical interventions to the society while also aiming for increasing their health quality. The last, in friendship, we enthusiastically look forward to expanding our network by building a vast familial environment in which we feel comfortable. They all coalesce into a rigid foundation serving as the basis for our activities. Professionalism based on familial environment is our principle. Furthermore, in order to increase our professionalism and bolster our position as an international organization, we are currently improving our international-standard organization skills. AMSA Indonesia has a tremendous amount of passion to give positive impact to the members, the societies, the nations, and other chapters under the membership of AMSA International. The embodiment of this passion resulted in the Shave for Hope event, when MURI (Museum Rekor Indonesia) recorded AMSA Indonesia thriving on producing the biggest donation to YPKAI (Yayasan Pita Kuning Anak Indonesia) by cutting hair to help children who suffered from cancer. We are expecting to give more positive impact to the society in the near future. I wish this booklet would give you the information needed in regard to AMSA Indonesia. Please feel free to contact the respective person or myself if you urge to acknowledge any further information. Thank you, Nathania Sheryl Sutisna Third Year, Faculty of Medicine - Universitas Pelita Harapan Regional Chairperson of AMSA Indonesia 2012/2013

ASIAN MEDICAL STUDENTS’ EXCHANGE PROGRAM

A

MSA Indonesia makes it possible for its members to have an exchange to other countries through AMSEP. It started back in 2003 of which, from that moment on, the growth significantly increases every year. AMSEP bilateral system was established in 2006. Now, the chapters that are involved in AMSEP including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Australia, and Egypt. AMSEP creates opportunities for the International preclinical and clinical exchanges between AMSA chapters. It is commonly a 7-day program and the capacity is reserved for 10 delegates. The program varies in every exchange, depending on the hosting country; but every program should contain at least the following aspects: academic activity, social activity, cultural exchange, and city tour. This program, therefore, fulfills the whole AMSA visions—Knowledge, Action, and Friendship—in a distinct way. We have been actively participating in AMSEP since it started back then. In the last 2 years, Indonesia has been involved in many AMSEP deals with other chapters such as Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Japan, and Taiwan. AMSEP is a twinning program, hence basically there are 2 main parts in AMSEP, the incomings/inbound and the outgoings/ outbound. • Incomings/inbound is the part of AMSEP when we host the delegates from the client chapter. • Outgoing/outbound is the part of AMSEP when we send delegates to the partner chapter. Every active AMSA member of AMSA Indonesia can apply to be the delegate in the outgoing AMSEP. The registration requires CV, motivation letter, recommendation letter, and Rp1.750.000,00 fee.

irst established in 2009, the liaison officer was specified into two non-governmental organizations, Liaison Officer for AMDA (Asian Medical Doctors’ Association) and Liaison Officer for WHO (World Health Organization). The basis of this decision, at that particular time, was to improve the public health in Indonesia. As the expansion of AMSA I ndonesia’s university members evolved massively in terms of its region, in 2010, the liaison o ffi c e r ’s b i n a r y function was converged into one single role: Liaison Officer for NGO. This generalization intended to establish the cooperation with the broader scope of NGOs, which were considerably approachable for all AMSA Indonesia’s university members, spanning from Aceh to Ambon. n e w ro l e, t h e re fo re, p e r m i t te d members of AMSA Indonesia, alongside their own regional NGOs, to join force in public health improvement. In 2011, AMSA Indonesia awarded Casey Tjahaja an appreciation as the first Ambassador of Public Health for her concern on health status in Indonesia. Back in May 2012, AMSA Indonesia and the Ambassador of Public H e a l t h initiated a groundbreaking movement for children who suffered from cancer, Shave for Hope. It was recorded as the most expensive hair shaving for charity in Indonesia through one-day mass social movement along our cooperation with Yayasan Pita Kuning Anak Indonesia (YPKAI).
