The Future of Travel Distribution -- The IATA “Solution” Travel Agents and Corporate Travel Buyers only Presented by Kevin Mitchell and Paul Ruden

The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) and Business Travel Coalition (BTC) are jointly producing “The Future of Travel Distribution - The IATA “Solution” Is there reason to be concerned when the global airline industry comes together to decide on standards that will govern air travel distribution for everyone? The International Air Transport Association’s Distribution Data Exchange Working Group held a meeting in Geneva in mid-July to begin discussion about a “new messaging standard” based on the idea of “authenticated shopping.” This term refers to a system in which, before receiving information about price and service options, a consumer, or a travel agent working on the consumer’s behalf, must first identify himself to the airline(s) in a manner that permits the airlines to tailor the “offer” to the personal characteristics of that traveler. IATA says it is “trying to bring the entire value chain together,” so that the consumer being assisted by an intermediary, interacts with the airline as if the consumer were in a direct channel (i.e., on the airline’s website). In the early discussions, the airlines were instructed to “not be constrained by backwards compatibility,” while also saying that the current distribution model and the new one “will exist side by side.” These developments raise many questions. Among them are whether, in the fast-changing travel distribution landscape, a collective global effort by the airlines will sweep aside a) current managed-travel community economic relationships; b) remaining visibility to fares and ancillary services to leisure and corporate customers; and c) the ability of travel managers to effectively control business travel costs, among many others. Because of the potential implications of IATA’s plans, ASTA and BTC are repurposing the September 8th session to update attendees on this strategically important initiative. This session will be highly interactive, as it is vital that input from impacted players be gathered as soon as possible.

Power of Travel and New Actions in the Developing World Presented by Robin Tauck

One of the greatest positive forces on the world’s socio-economic status and the environment in the coming decades will be travel and tourism. The travel industry has the potential to help maintain the world’s historic and natural treasures -- the very essence of our business—and create opportunities in emerging destinations. This interactive session takes a fresh look at how an industry generating roughly 9.2 percent of global GDP and employing 235 million individuals is collaborating and stepping into action on strategies to address key sustainability issues, while creating positive economic development, jobs and cultural pride and widely contributing to poverty alleviation. This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the UNESCO World Heritage. Attendees will learn about UNESCO’s future plans at key World Heritage Sites, which new sites are due to open and public/private partnerships to assist those sites that are currently surpassing capacity levels due to rapidly expanded tourism. Participants will explore the new “Sustainable Development” dictum to protect 936 of the world’s most pristine places, and examine how the tourism industry and our clients will benefit and be part of the solution. After attending this session, you will be able to: • have a deeper understanding of new sustainability strategies for the future of global travel • understand how the U.S. travel industry is positioned for the greatest impact on developing nations • establish your own action plan for getting involved in sustainable travel
