Welcome
Dear travel professional We’re excited to have you as an attendee of ASTA’s Travel Retailing & Destination Expo this year in Las Vegas. We have been hard at work over the past 12 months to create a show that we think provides more value and top-tier education than any other in the industry. It truly is the place where highly qualified travel professionals come to enhance their skills and boost their business. We hope you’ll like the changes we made. For example, this year we upped the education ante with a complete overhaul of sessions and speakers. Thanks to a fresh, new take on agent education, focusing on high-tech, interactive education seminars developed by industry expert Bruce Tepper, CTC, you’ll walk away with a competitive edge and new business-building skills you can put to work immediately when you return home. And, we’ve worked hard to streamline the schedule so that you don’t have to miss a thing—whether it’s the latest tech seminar or the latest product offerings from some of the industry’s leading suppliers or one of the many great evening events we have planned. What’s more, ASTA’s Travel Retailing & Destination Expo gives you the chance to exchange ideas and network with the industry’s top players, while attending exclusive events such as the ASTA’s black-tie Advocacy Dinner and Leadership Luncheon. We want to help you make the most of your stay in Las Vegas and we hope the knowledge you gain here will enhance your area of expertise and open new possibilities for your travel business. And, before you leave, be sure to register for the 2012 conference in Los Angeles September 7-9.
Enjoy the show!

TUESDAY
Competing on Price and Making a Profit in an Online World Presented by Bruce Tepper, MBA, CTC, CITE The old adage, “you get what you pay for” definitely applies to buying travel. Consumers understand the difference between 5-star and 2-star, between budget and luxury…between a time-consuming Internet purchase and high-level assistance from an industry pro. Agency success comes from trust and building relationships. And that only comes from understanding the value you bring to the process: You focus on agency services rather than travel products and position yourself and what you offer as the best overall value in the marketplace. To do all that, you need the right business model and operating policies that best suit you and your clients. We’ll explore the three different business models for today’s travel agency, what you really do for your clients and how to sell your valuable services so you become the people’s choice. After attending this educational session, you will be able to: • Better recognize how your clients should see you versus how they do see you • Understand how each agency business model works and choose the one that’s best for you • More effectively sell the value of what you do and why your clients should be thrilled to pay for it
Ecuador, The Sustainable Tourism Destination of South America Brought to you by the Ecuador Ministry of Tourism Patricio Tamariz
Maximizing Marketing Partnerships to Build Your Bottom Line Moderated by Ryan McGredy Panelists: Nancy Gonzales, CTC, Bonnie Lee Every year, agencies leave thousands of dollars of co-op marketing funds on the table because they don’t know how to ask for the money or don’t have the right supplier relationships to get it. But the fact is that strong relationships with suppliers and non-competing allies spell profit and success. In this interactive discussion, we’ll explore two key tools—co-op funds and local alliances—to substantially boost your bottom line. You will hear real-life examples of how to request and receive co-op funds from preferred suppliers and work with local businesses to extend your marketing reach. Every idea presented will be reviewed and, based on audience feedback, attendees will be recognized for their best ideas in three categories: Best Local Partnership; Most Ingenious Use of Co-Op Resources; and Best Overall Idea. After attending this educational session, you will be able to: • Understand how to maximize your relationship with suppliers • Prepare a co-op marketing request that has a great chance of success • Identify ways to utilize local, non-competing businesses in your marketing plan

TUESDAY Specialty Interest Marketing Brought to you by CLIA Presented by John Bateman, MCC Niche. Small ship. Special interest. No matter what label you use, this once minor segment of the cruise industry has become a major player. Most of us know how to sell to that mass-market client. But what about customers with highly specialized interests? Is there a place in cruising for them? The answer, of course, is yes. In this interactive seminar you’ll learn dozens of strategies to help you reach and satisfy niche clients. You’ll see how both mainstream and specialized cruise products can satisfy their needs. And you’ll explore the profile of six common niche client types and precisely what they want from a vacation travel experience.

The Law Is Changing the Way Travel Is Sold—Are You Ready? Presented by Paul Ruden Congress is considering changes in the law governing travel agents’ access to optional airline fees, while DOT plans a rulemaking on the same subject. Meanwhile, DOT has stepped up enforcement of disclosure regulations that apply to travel agents. States and local taxing authorities are considering occupancy and other taxes that may impact agents and the subject of regulation has arisen in several states. The Congress and Internal Revenue Service, as well as federal labor regulators, are re-examining the way independent contractor relationships are taxed and disclosed. All of these actions are changing the way travel can be sold. To avoid being caught unawares, agents can get a comprehensive understanding of these trends by attending this seminar.

TUESDAY
Why social collaboration matters at your agency Brought to you by Sabre Travel Network Presented by Sarah Kennedy Ellis The value of good networking skills has never been higher. More and more agents are moving out of a traditional brick and mortar agency and into their homes. The flexibility and efficiency of this model are unparalleled—the only thing missing is the shared expertise among agents in a traditional office environment. With today’s technology and resources, even that can be overcome. In addition to learning more and better serving your customers, you’ll be honing one of the most valuable skills you can have—the ability to network. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to: • Get started in the travel industry’s most popular agent-only community, AgentStream • Effectively use a community of peers to build your knowledge and service your customers • Understand the benefits of helping your fellow agents – how it helps the industry as a whole and puts more money in your pockets
