WELCOME TO COZUMEL

Cozumel is Mexico’s largest island, located just 12 miles off the coast directly across from Playa Del Carmen.

Once inhabited by the Maya, Cozumel, similar to Isla Mujeres, was an ancient pilgrimage destination particularly for women honoring Ixchel, the goddess of fertility. Visitors can still spot ruins of temples near San Gervasio, at the heart of the island.

The 34-mile-long island is considered one of the world’s top scuba diving meccas. Divers from across the globe come to Cozumel for a chance to dive the same reefs Jacques Cousteau called “some of the best diving spots in the entire world.”

Cozumel is also home to Chankanaab National Park, which attracts visitors to its white-sand beaches for snorkeling, interacting with dolphins and manatees, and visiting a crocodile exhibit.

Other noteworthy points of interest include Punta Celarain and its historical lighthouse, and Colombia Lagoon, a shelter for many of the island’s endemic species.

The small main town of San Miguel is bustling with jewelry, handcrafts and souvenir shops during the day, and locals and visitors alike enjoy a large selection of restaurants offering a variety of cuisines, with many featuring fresh seafood from the daily catches of local fishermen.

Learn about the island’s Mayan heritage at the Town of Corn, where Mayan-costumed guides lead short workshops on how to make chocolate, tortillas, honey and hand-crafts. ¡TIEMPO DE FIESTA!

The Mexican Caribbean’s night scene

Cancun has earned a reputation as a party zone ever since throngs of vacationers first began descending upon its sandy shores more than 45 years ago, and it doesn’t disappoint today’s partygoers looking for some fun after the sun goes down. Most of the action is located at Punta Cancun in the middle of the Hotel Zone.

Don’t miss Coco Bongo, where celebrity impersonators act, acrobats soar and confetti flies while you dance the night away. During high season, world famous DJs visit the top clubs ‘spinning’ tunes until the early morning hours. You can even take your party to the ‘high-seas’ aboard a fun-filled evening cruise.

Though the Riviera Maya is a more laid back destination, Playa del Carmen’s Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) comes alive at night with its own party scene. ‘Playa’ features smaller venues, some right on the beach, often with local musicians entertaining.

Old time mainstays like Señor Frog’s still deliver crazy fun and yard-long margaritas! And as the town has grown, so has the demand for bigger clubs, and Playa del Carmen now boasts its own Coco Bongo and other big name clubs from Cancun.

Enjoy the most traditional Mexican party in the Mexican Caribbean! Begin the evening by stepping into a traditional Mexican carnival atmosphere before climbing aboard your trajinera, a gondolalike raft decorated with a kaleidoscope of colors. As your ‘gondolier’ gently navigates your trajinera through quiet canals, you’ll enjoy the delicious flavors of Mexican cuisine and beverages, including tequila, beer & soft drinks. Around every bend you’ll discover musical groups that will have you singing and dancing throughout the night.

SHALL WE DANCE?

Salsa! Like all hot topics, there is some controversy surrounding the origin of the dance called salsa. Some claim that it was based on a cry shouted by musicians while they were playing their music.

Others believe that the term was created by record labels to better market this genre of music, choosing the word “Salsa” because of its hot and spicy connotations. Still others believe the term came about because salsa dancing and the accompanying music is a mixture of different styles, just like salsa or “sauce” is a mixture of different ingredients.

Salsa has gone through a lot of transformations over the years, initially incorporting elements of Afro-Cuba and Afro-Caribbean dances. As the popularity of this dance and music genre grew, so did the variety of styles.

Various countries of the Caribbean and Latin America such as Cuba, Colombia, and Puerto Rico, have distinct salsa style of their own. Even within the United States, you can find L.A., Miami, and New York style Salsa.

No matter where this infectious and social dance came from, one thing is for sure, it is gaining popularity all over the world and almost every where you go, you can find a local spot featuring live salsa orchestras to dance to.

In Cancun, you can head to Sirenis Raw Bar (on Fridays and Saturdays) and if you are vacationing near Playa del Carmen, lookup Zenzi Beach Club (on Sundays). Shall we dance?

YUCATAN

Yet Another reason to visit the Mexican Caribbean!

Mexican cuisine is as rich as it is diverse. Many regions of the country have their own traditional fare. Visitors to the Yucatan often overlook the fact that it is also home to some spectacular cuisine. An intricate part of the region’s cultural heritage, Yucatecan food is very distinct from other regions of the country.

WELCOME TO THE

Sopa de Lima

Here is a short list of some favorite dishes you should definitely try during a visit to the Mexican Carribbean.

Salbutes

MEXICAN CARIBBEAN

A very tasty kind of chicken soup with a twist! It is based on a light chicken broth and served with shredded chicken, deep fried tortilla strips, and what in the Yucatan Peninsula is known as Lima. Not to be confused with limes or lemons, the lima is a less acidic citrus fruit similar to lie but sweeter like an orange. Intriguing? Wait until you try it!

Corn flour tortillas, deep fried in oil until they inflate and get crispy. They can be served with ground beef, chicken or shredded turkey and are seasoned with tomato and lettuce, avocado slices, and chopped red onion. Ask for some refried black beans as a side dish.

CUISINE OF CochinitaPibil

Cochinita Pibil

A wonderful mix of modern design, ancient Mayan mysteries and a warm, welcoming Mexican culture that ties it all together.

This dish is basically pork marinated in achiote, wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in an earth oven. The dish is accompanied with red onion in a sauce made with sour orange juice and habanero chili. It is usually eaten in tortas (a kind of sandwich) and tacos.

Hungry? Don’t miss the opportunity to delve into the tantalizing world of Yucatecan food while visiting the Mexican Caribbean!

And remember, one of the many beautiful customs of Mexico is the warm hospitality shown in restaurants. It is considered rude to ask you if you are ready for the check - to Mexicans, it would be the same as if they were kicking you out of their home. When you are ready, you have to ask for:
