THE FIRST PROBLEM OF CONCRETE SAFETY BARRIER The working width Most of the existing concrete barriers have a working width (Wm) equal to W5; this implies a minimum required dimension of the traffic island of 2,80 m on average.

THE SECOND PROBLEM OF CONCRETE SAFETY BARRIER The connection between the different modular elements Most of the existing concrete barriers are connected by sleeves. The tightening of the connection sleeve is particularly difficult in case of plano-altimetric misalignment of the elements.

THE SECOND CRASH TEST: TB81 Determining the operating width (W) after the second impact Anas decided to carry out a second crash test TB81 on the already crashed barrier, at exactly the same spot. The results were surprising. Working width (W) 2° Crash test TB81: W2 (0,74 m)
Dynamic Deflection (D) 2° Crash test TB81: 0,10 m

INNOVATION ON ROAD SAFETY BARRIERS: NDBA (Nationale Dynamic Barrier Anas) The NDBA allows for the installation of center barriers where available space is limited.
Types available today are: ▪
NDBA Asphalt
→ bilateral barrier installed on asphalt
▪
NDBA Concrete
→ bilateral barrier installed on concrete structures
▪
NDBA Asphalt in lightweight cls
→ bilateral barrier installed on asphalt
▪
NDBA Bridge
→ unilateral bridge barrier
▪
NDBA Bridge no handrail
→ unilateral bridge barrier without handrail
▪
NDBA Redirective
→ unilateral redirective profile in tunnel

THE NDBA ADVANTAGES Unique profile and increased comfort levels
Low cost and high performance Low production line costs - One formwork for all barriers Increased road visibility conditions - Introducing blue line at driver's eye level Absence of glare from vehicles - Height of barriers 1.20m

Technological innovation The technological system is able to sign an impact caused by an accident in real time through accelerometers installed between the elements. A software platform allows to localize the exact point where the impact took place, regulating the switching on of specific LEDs located on the barrier, so as to signal in real time to oncoming users the point of impact and the need for additional attention.

MANUFACTURING SITES With the development of the NDBA (National Dynamic Barrier Anas), Anas has become the facto producer/manufacturer of safety barriers. So, ANAS started the «Manufacturing Site Certification Procedure» to identify companies which could produce the barriers.
The distribution, shown in the figure, allows for immediate supplies to job sites with significant facilitation for rapid completion of work. To date, Anas has 430 million of € available for the installation of the NDBA barrier. 31/03/2022 Anas’ innovation in road safety barriers I Eng. Domenico Petruzzelli, Eng. Nicola Dinnella
