2024 DAME Design Awards winners announced

TeamO’s Offshore 150N Hi-Lift Lifejacket & Harness was crowned overall winner of the 33rd DAME Awards on Tuesday in front of a large audience of leading marine professionals at the METSTRADE Breakfast Briefing. The jury also identified eight category winners, nine Special Mentions and named two Environmental Design Award winners.

The 33rd DAME Award winners for 2024 were announced on Tuesday morning at the annual Breakfast Briefing before the opening of METSTRADE. This year the DAME jury inspected 114 entries from 28 countries. It nominated a total of 58 products for inclusion in the DAME Design

Awards showcase and identified a winner for each of the eight DAME categories. The jury also identified nine Special Mentions (commended runner-up entries) and named two Environmental Design Award winners. TUDelft School for Industrial Design Engineering senior lecturer Arjen Jansen presented the overall winner of the DAME Award 2024 to the TeamO Hi-Lift 150N lifejacket.

“It was very encouraging to see such a strong field of entries spanning the whole of the leisure marine sector, with products for people and the smallest boats right up to high-end superyacht equipment,” said jury chair Andre Hoek. “In addition to genuine breakthrough launches, the jury was equally pleased to see many products where designers

have iteratively improved the user experience and exploited latest technologies to meet emerging demands. Smart design unlocks the door to a fully sustainable approach, in manufacturing, recyclability, longevity, usability and serviceability.

“Our focus was inevitably drawn towards the high number of entries driven by developing technologies that will serve the marine industry’s future needs in areas such as electrification and networking,” Hoek said. “But in a close-run finish, it was an excellent new development in safety that was unanimously named outright winner of this year’s awards. A perfect reminder of how we can never stop improving product categories that have been an essential part of boating for decades.”

TeamO has dared to think different with its Hi-Lift 150N lifejacket. It has a twisted bladder design that moves most of the wasted buoyancy above the waterline of a conventional design to an inflated pillow on the user’s back. This directly lifts the upper torso out of the water and keeps the nose and mouth higher. The wide-set front of the jacket provides stability in the water and controls the orientation of the face and body in line with ISO Standards. The performance increase of

€17,100 raised by DAME entrants for worthy causes

Each year the organisers of METSTRADE donate the combined registration fees for the DAME Design Award to selected charities as a way of giving back to society. For 2024 the METSTRADE Exhibition Committee selected SailWise, a Dutch organisation providing active multi-day water sports activities for those with disabilities. Each year, more than 1,500 people aged between 10-90 participate at Robinson Crusoe Island, its watersports centre in the Loosdrechtse Plassen, located to the south of Amsterdam. The charity owns specialist equipment to accommodate a wide range of disabilities, including wheelchair users, and guests visit with their families and carers from all over Europe.

The 2024 DAME Design Awards donation will be applied directly to provision of a completely new, low maintenance and long-term sustainable jetty and terrace on Robinson Crusoe Island, to be built in time for the April-November 2025 season. You can read more about this charity at https://sailwise.nl

AMERICAN MAGIC AND THE QUEST TO BUILD A LEGACY

Terry Hutchinson keynote offers inspiring vision for sailing sector

Building a winning team and a legacy that could be a game changer for the US and wider boating industry was the theme of yesterday’s keynote address delivered by Terry Hutchinson, skipper and president of operations for the New York Yacht Club American Magic.

Hutchinson addressed a packed auditorium to kick off METSTRADE at yesterday’s Breakfast Briefing as he reflected on the disappointment of American Magic not making it to the AC final but flagged the mission underway to not only up their game for AC38, but to cultivate sailing talent and to reignite America’s interest in sailing. Central to that mission is the establishment of a 60,000ft2 high-performance sailing centre at the Port of Pensacola in Florida. This cutting-edge facility will serve as American Magic’s headquarters for designing, building, hosting regattas, and developing the current and next generation of America’s Cup, Olympic, and International sailors.

sailing front. “We want to cultivate talent, create a legacy of engineers, athletes, designers, boatbuilders… allowing those supporting the AC to build equity in their teams. It could be a game changer,” he said. The Youth and Women’s AC are central to the Pensacola plan of broadening sailing’s appeal. Hutchinson also flagged the positive experience of bringing on and working with younger talent.

“We want to cultivate talent, create a legacy of engineers, athletes, designers, boatbuilders… allowing those supporting the AC to build equity in their teams. It could be a game changer”

Accessibility and inclusion are key, said Hutchinson, who bemoaned the fact that the US had fallen behind in recent years on the AC and Olympic

Hutchinson joined IBI Editor Ed Slack later that morning for a 30-minute interview and Q&A on the METSTRADE Theatre stage in Hall 13, where he went into detail about how learnings from the disappointment of falling short at the AC37 were helping to build a platform for success tomorrow. For instance, the successful use of simulators by the likes of INEOS Britannia, who spent much less time training on the water, had been an eye-opener. Simulators were one technology Hutchinson envisaged having significant potential for the wider industry. He also spoke of his admiration for Emirates Team New Zealand and flagged their continuity model and the way New Zealand had effectively built an industry around the AC as a template for other countries to follow.

Five days of comradeship during the unique anniversary edition of the largest free event in the Netherlands!

From August 20 to 24, 2025, over 2 million visitors will gather in the Dutch capital for a grand reunion with ships and crews from all over the world: SAIL Amsterdam 2025. This year, the largest free event in the Netherlands celebrates a triple milestone: its 10th edition, 50 years of SAIL, and Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary. International Tall Ships, thousands of boats, and smaller vessels will gather on waves of camaraderie—United by Waves. Together with directors Mitra van Raalten (General Director) and Robert Visser (Business Director), we take a look ahead at this unique edition of SAIL and get a glimpse behind the scenes.

Unity on and around the water

SAIL Amsterdam was first organized in 1975 to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the Amsterdam. The hundreds of thousands of visitors were captivated by the magic of Tall Ships from all over the world, leading to a decision to host the event every five years. To ensure its continuity, the SAIL Amsterdam Foundation was established, and the event grew into an institution.

The spirit of unity on the water is reflected in the slogan of this anniversary edition: “SAIL 2025, United by Waves.” Over 2 million visitors will come together at SAIL with the crews of Tall Ships from across the globe, from Peru to Indonesia. This unity is SAIL’s strength.

Mitra van Raalten explains:

“This is what sets SAIL apart from other events—five days of global connection on the water and along the docks. It’s truly unique. Moreover, SAIL is about the past, present, and future. What can we learn from our nautical heritage? And what can we take forward into the future? During SAIL, you’ll also see some of the most modern ships in the harbour!”

Robert Visser continues:

“With 2.3 million visitors, SAIL Amsterdam is the largest event in the Netherlands. It’s a celebration of unity, not only for the Tall Ships and their crews but also for different cultures. Coming together on

METSTRADE FEATURES

the water strengthens our bonds. In light of current global events, this is more relevant than ever. Through the water, we stay connected to people worldwide!”

Partners are indispensable

Organizing the largest free event in the Netherlands is a major operational challenge—both financially and logistically. “The organization of SAIL is not a given. We rely on our Presenting Partners, both for resources and expertise. It’s fantastic that Booking.com, Heineken, Heren2, Tommy Hilfiger, Sligro, Verpact, and KPN are already on board! Each contributes to the event in their own way. For example, during SAIL, the pressure on the mobile network is higher than during New Year’s Eve. That’s why a partner like KPN is essential for organizing the event safely,” explains Mitra van Raalten.

Sailing trips for the business market

In addition to support from partners and sponsors, hospitality sales are an essential part of making SAIL possible. Mitra elaborates:

“The SAIL-In Parade is one of SAIL’s highlights. Experiencing it from a ship is an unforgettable experience. For these business arrangements, we’re building a special hospitality village: the SAIL

Village. Here, business guests are welcomed before boarding one of our 125 hospitality ships, where everything is ready for a delightful breakfast, lunch, dinner, or drink.”

These sailing trips offer companies the opportunity to provide their clients and partners with an unforgettable experience. “You’re sailing right in the middle of the SAIL backdrop—how unique is that? Combined with the welcoming hospitality and on-water entertainment, this is an experience you’ll never forget,” says Mitra van Raalten. For consumer there are also sailing tickets and tickets for arrangements available on SAIL.nl.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming edition of SAIL promises to be packed with highlights. With ships from around the globe, breathtaking views, and hundreds of sub-events, this event will once again connect countless visitors. When will #SAIL2025 be deemed a success? “Ultimately, it’s about that unique sense of camaraderie on the water—the happy faces and the feeling of connection between the many visitors and crews from all corners of the world. When all of this comes together and the event runs safely, it’s a success for us!” concludes Mitra van Raalten.

SuMoth design competitors use AI to advance sustainable foiling

Students taking part in the SuMoth design challenge have been explaining how they have been using advanced technology and machine learning to develop their competitive class of racing foilers. The teams have also been working closely with non-marine industries to adapt new tools and methodologies which it is hoped will filter down to the rest of the marine industry. “Boatbuilders need to see a return on investment when using new materials,” said SuMoth founder and director Bruno Giuntoli. “The challenge for our teams is to push the tech forward, creating boats that are made largely

from sustainable resins and reinforcements, with a full life cycle assessment. In addition, they must be reliable and not prone to avoidable breakages. This involves a great deal of testing and experimentation, which a main OEM probably wouldn’t do. Instead, they would stick with materials they know.’

During the presentation, it became clear that the students were willing to think outside the box, and also harness expertise from other sectors. An Italian scissor company, for example, has been working with one of the race teams to develop a new type of blade that can easily - and cleanly - cut composite.

Another major advance has been the using if 3D printing to make precision mould tools.

Aurora Caloni, head of management of the Polito Sailing Team, explained that a lot of the momentum in the design technology was made possible by the students coming from different backgrounds. Her own discipline is in medicine, and she can see techniques used there also helping in developing marine products.

Some of the experimentation has taken some intersting turns, some as extreme as seeing if some types of breakfast cereal would make effective reinforcement. The young designers have also found that using bio-based materials can be a little more tricky than existing, but unsustainable, alternatives.

“The recycling looks good on paper, but in practice isn’t always so smooth,” Giuntoli said. “All the teams have learnt a great deal since the first SuMoth was built in 2020, and not only is the project helping to develop new materials, it is also creating a lot of hands-on experience amongst the teams. These students can soon bring their research abilities to mainstream boatbuilders.”

Amongst the methodologies being explored are fluid dynamics, machine learning and AI, all being harnessed to create a fast foiling sailing boat that can compete within some strict rules.

NMMA presents US, Canada market update at METSTRADE

NMMA CAO and SVP of operations

Robert Newsome said a range of economic indicators suggest the North American boat market should be positioned for growth in 2025

Key indicators point to sales growth as interest rates decrease and dealer pipeline clears The US boat market appears to be poised for an upswing in 2025, according to National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) chief administrative officer and senior vice president of operations, Robert Newsome, who delivered a well-attended State of the North American Recreational Boating Industry presentation Tuesday at METSTRADE.

In his address on the USA Connect stage, Newsome said North America’s leisure marine sector trade association anticipates 2024 new boat sales in the range of about 230,000 units, despite higher interest rates through most of the year. Although sales of both new and pre-owned boats continue to decrease against record levels seen during the Covid-19 pandemic, Newsome noted that the anticipated 2024 figure still falls within the 12-year rolling average.

Looking ahead, he said key economic indicators suggest 2025 could see a market upswing.

“Unemployment is very low in the US, and wages

at all levels are either stabilised or growing,” said Newsome. “New housing starts and interest rates are indicating a relatively stable economy overall. We’re seeing stronger expectations for GDP, which is growing – perhaps not quite as quickly as we might like, but it is still moving in a positive direction.

“Canadian economic indicators are looking quite similar to the United States. For 2024 we’re looking at sales of just over 30,000 new boats, which is a decline from 2012. Where we are seeing a little bit healthier momentum is the pre-owned sales in close to the 12-year average.”

Following an update on NMMA’s Discover Boating consumer outreach initiative, Newsome concluded with some comments on the recent US election, and questions about future impacts on the boat industry.

“We don’t know fully yet what to expect from the new administration, but in both Canada and the United States, we maintain a bipartisan focus and are ready to represent the industry’s needs,” he said. “We’re continuously trying to ensure that everything related to trade remains on a fair playing field in terms of exporting and importing.”

on the need to think differently

The two women at the wheels of Damen Yachting of the Netherlands and Italy’s Azimut|Benetti said the future of Europe’s superyacht sector looks good yet faces “lots of challenges.” Both also cautioned that sustainability is a long road.

Opening the annual Superyacht Forum on Monday, Rose Damen and Giovanna Vitelli nudged their conversation from women’s roles in the future of the superyacht sector to sustainability, an issue weighing heavily on the global industry.

Vitelli, the chairperson at Azimut|Benetti – and winner of the 2024 EY Entrepreneur of the Year – sees her company registering a turnover of €1.3bn in 2024, and of €1.5bn in 2025. In terms of future growth, Vitelli said, “I see this especially in bigger boats. This is a positive moment … but there are lots of problems.”

Damen, whose family owns the massive Damen Shipyards Group, echoed that sentiment despite the fact Damen Yachting has a “healthy order book. 2024 has been a good year although we are missing our Russian clients. They accounted for 25% of our market.”

Vitelli and Damen spoke of the need to broaden their sector’s value chain by tapping into design talent in evidence in the retail and hospitality sectors.

Azimut|Benetti has taken risks, said Vitelli, “to tap into a bigger audience.” In New York, her company displayed a 60ft boat in

L-R:

Times Square. “We need to think differently about this industry,” said Vitelli. She and Damen addressed the issue of secrecy that can cling to the superyacht industry. “Trust in our industry is going to be so important,” said Damen. “We have to do more outside of our industry, and we must do that together.”

The Italian industry is part of the Made-in-Italy campaign that presents Italian quality in fashion, food, yachting and other sections abroad.

Both Vitelli and Damen said technical education is not always aligned with the industry’s needs. “Sustainability should be looked at realistically,” said Vitelli. “We need to talk about, one, what is possible today, and two, what will our future technologies look like?” Damen said she feels “technical students in the Netherlands can appear a little hesitant to join the superyacht sector.” Also, engaging owners in sustainability discussions is not always easy. “There is work for all of us to do in educating our clients,” she added. “Sustainability cannot be hurried…We need the value chain to be involved, too.”
