In other words, throughout the year the reman industry will see much development as well as many new initiatives. We will report on much of it.

As reported elsewhere in this edition, China, already the world’s fastest growing automotive and commercial vehicle market is stepping up its involvement in remanufacturing, on local level as well in upper levels of the Chinese administration. Closer to home is the decision by Amsterdam RAI, the organiser of the biennial ReMaTec exhibitions in The Netherlands and APRA, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association, to launch a new, joint annual exhibition. Like APRA’s traditional Big R show, the new BigR/ ReMaTecUSA event will be based in Las Vegas and expectations are that it will significantly generate new interest in the traditional Big R concept. In fact, the number of pre-bookings deliver a positive message (see page 33) concerning the industry’s commitment to APRA’s and Amsterdam RAI’s partnership in Nevada.

LKQ acquires MM Knopf American recycling and dismantling giant buys leading core-dealer One of America’s fastest growing companies within the automotive aftermarket segment is taking over one the country’s best known core dealers. At the time of writing the official announcement had not yet been made but ReMaTecNews understands that LKQ of Chicago, the fast growing dismantling and replacement group in America, has acquired the assets of MM Knopf, the New Jersey based core dealer that ranks among USA’s top core dealing businesses. LKQ is, by a significant margin, USA’s largest supplier of recycled, aftermarket, and reconditioned car and truck parts and heavy-duty truck parts. If accurate, LKQ will have added a substantial asset to its already rapidly rising influence in the aftermarket. Over the past decade the MM Knopf has passed from the founding Knopf family to Remy International and, subsequently,

in 2011, returned to family ownership. Since then it has been operated by Marshall and Woody Knopf, the sons of founder Max Knopf. Its acquisition by LKQ means that the business will come under the umbrella of one of the automotive industry’s fast growing companies with a highly profitable record. In recent years LKQ has achieved spectacular growth through a range of acquisitions, including the take-over of UK parts and garage equipment distributor Euro Car Parts. The deal was concluded in 2012 at a price of £225 million.

Remy International takes over USA Industries Remy International, the worldwide manufacturer, remanufacturer, and distributor of starters and alternators, locomotive products, and hybrid electric motors has acquired all assets of USA Industries in Bay Shore, New York. USA Industries manufactures and remanufactures starters, alternators, CV axles, and disc brake calipers for the light-duty aftermarket. The company announced the acquisition in mid-January.

Superflow and ATP in new collaboration SuperFlow, the US manufacturer of dynanometers and flowbenches, and ATP Industries Group, the UK supplier of, among other things, test equipment for the remanufacturing industry have announced a new collaborative effort. Together the two companies recently launched their new WinDyn TestCube to test CAN controlled transmissions on a dynamometer. Using ATP’s new TestCube in conjunction with SuperFlow’s WinDyn Data Acquisition and Control system remanufacturers can now fully control, test and monitor electronically managed transmissions. “This new technology solidifies both companies as leaders in the transmission remanufacturing industry and further demonstrates their commitment to develop affordable technology to keep transmission remanufacturers at the

forefront of their industry for years to come,” the two companies said in a statement. “For the last several years transmission remanufacturers have struggled to test modern electronic transmissions prior to shipping them to their customers. As a result, they were seeing high volumes of costly comebacks that were killing their bottom line,” said Scott Giles, SuperFlow CEO. “We’re thrilled to introduce jointly with ATP Industries Group a solution that allows our transmission dyno customers to fully control and test these transmissions, preventing comebacks and keeping money in their pockets.” To mark the launch, Superflow and ATP recently organized a meeting for fourteen representatives from seven of the world’s leading transmission remanufacturers at SuperFlow’s facility in Colorado Springs. Attendees were treated to a full overview of the new technology and also its operation on one of SuperFlow’s Axiline 97000 transmission dynos testing a GM 6L80 transmission.

Flight Systems enters HD engine market Flight Systems Electronics Group, FSEG, is entering the heavy-duty engine market Through its Flight Diesel Brand – which has been selling light and medium-duty pumps, injectors and turbochargers to the OES and independent aftermarket channels since 2006 - the company is now proceeding with heavyduty new and remanufactured components. Beginning in the first quarter of 2014, Flight Diesel will be offering a new line of electronic unit injectors (EUI), turbochargers and electronic control units (ECU). This new EUI

offering will include applications for Cummins, CAT and Detroit, FSEG says. 20 different part numbers for those applications, including the newest ISX series injectors, will be included. The Turbocharger launches will include Mack E7 and Cummins ISX applications, and the initial ECU launch will open with the popular Detroit DDECIII and DDECIV as well as the Cummins Celect and Celect Plus applications. Flight Diesel introduced the new program at the Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week in Las Vegas on January 26.

BBB launches new app BBB Industries has announced the launch of its mobile e-catalog app for iOS and Android users. The free app, which is available for download on iTunes and Google Play, provides users with access to the company’s web content via smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices, the company said. The app allows users access to data for automotive and small engine rotating electrical coverage, as well as automotive power steering rack and pinion, gears and pumps. BBB also announced plans to add its recently acquired brake caliper product offering to the e-catalog app as well. E-catalog apps are also under development for the Wilson and Vision OE brands.

US, Europe and Japan discuss automotive collaboration In mid-January leaders of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) and its original equipment market association, the Original Equipment Suppliers Association (OESA) met with executives of CLEPA and JAPIA, the associations representing automotive parts suppliers in Europe and Japan, to discuss cooperation in the global automotive industry on January 15 in Detroit, Michigan. The

discussion included a range of issues relating to remanufacturing. “As our members continue to operate in a global environment, it is critical for the trade associations to meet and discuss issues of common concern,” said Steve Handschuh, president and chief executive officer of MEMA. “I was pleased that the participants could identify significant issues for immediate cooperation and joint efforts. We are committed to working with our colleagues from CLEPA and JAPIA for the betterment of all of our members and to serve as the strong voice for North American suppliers in the global industry.” Issues discussed ranged from efforts to promote intellectual property (IP) protection, remanufacturing, emerging environmental regulations and trade negotiations between the respective countries. The global industry leaders also identified topics for further discussion, including greater coordination of anti-counterfeiting efforts and strengthening regulatory harmonization.

Hella opens plant in Mexico German auto parts manufacturer Hella inaugurated a $150 million headlight plant in the central Mexican city of Irapuato. Together with well-known industry figure Jens Lindholm, Hella in 2012 bought the then Martin Detzen reman factory in Illingen in Southern Germany. The business has since been renamed Artec. The Irapuatu factory will initially employ 250 people, but the workforce is expected to grow to 1,500 as production ramps up, Hella Iluminacion director Ignacio Moreno said. “With this investment we will generate a positive impact in the short and medium term in the economy in Irapuato in the state of Guanajuato and in the country,” he said. The plant is projected to turn out nearly 3 million units a year for several different automakers.

WABCO Reman Solutions “Heavy Duty Remanufacturer of the Year” Shortly before ReMaTecNews’ deadline Wabco Reman Solutions was named “Heavy Duty Remanufacturer of the Year” by the Heavy Duty Remanufacturers Group (HDRG) of the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA). The award, which was announced at the annual HDRG Summit in Las Vegas, recognises a remanufacturer that has demonstrated a particularly high level of leadership in the industry. WABCO Reman Solutions was selected because of its dedication to quality and innovation, outstanding customer service, technical excellence and diverse product portfolio of heavy duty remanufactured parts. Other factors were the company’s global capabilities, with facilities in Michigan, Stanowice, Poland, Jinan, China and a joint venture operation in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

China’s long march towards remanufacturing The autumn delivered further indications of China’s increasing focus on remanufacturing. A good one and a half hour’s drive from Shanghai along the main Beijing highway, you get to an open, green and provincial city that, like so many other modern Chinese conurbations, seems to have arrived only yesterday. With 1.5 million inhabitants, this is evidently not quite the case. Nevertheless, it is unlikely that many readers of this magazine have heard of Zhangjiagang City. Research & Development Center

That may well be about to change. As China’s political leadership continues to support automotive and heavy duty reman, places like Zhangjiagang City are set to become factors in remanufacturing. As so-called Remanufacturing Industry Demonstration Bases, there are a handful of them and Zhangjiagang City is home to one such base. Like its competitors that are supported by provincial and city governments across this huge country, Zhangjiagang has ambitions to establish a green and pollutionfree environment and wants to attract industries that fit the picture. High on the list is remanufacturing, which perhaps is not surprising considering 20 million new cars and 120 million new trucks arrive on China’s roads every year.

Environment “We’re proud of our environment,” Li Jiang of the city’s development corporation tells ReMaTecNews, “and we consider it important to build sustainable industries here, industries that are in line with the government’s stated objectives and which will secure a healthy, industrial environment for our people. We believe that Zhangjiagang has almost all the prerequisites necessary to become an important player in remanufacturing.”

Li Jiang So far Zhangjiangang State Remanufacturing Industry Demonstration Base, to give it its full name, is a project in the mind of the planners rather than an industrial reality. An open field of around 1 square kilometer surrounded by modern plants where other commercial sectors are busy converting China into the modern industrial superpower it wishes to become.

Organised by China’s National Key Laboratory for Remanufacturing, with partners Bayreuth University in Germany and Rochester Institute of New York, the event gathered a large cross-section of China’s most influential figures in remanufacturing, including senior representatives from the upper levels of China’s administration. The message given out was uniformly one of official support for reman in China. The extent to which this will result in practical outcomes remains, of course, to be seen. But the will is clearly there.

Zhangjiangang possesses many of the necessary requisites. With 1.5 million inhabitants, the labour pool is plentiful. Located on two major national rail lines, benefiting from China’s largest inland port on the Yangtse River and one to two hours from Shanghai’s two international airports, the city claims to be ideally positioned as a pioneer in the promotion of green industries. That claim is further supported by the fact that Zhangjiangang has won the UN’s Award as an ecological city with strong environmental protection activities.

“The government wants remanufacturing to become an important part of our country’s industrial development,” says Li Jiang. “If you look around, you will see that Zhangjiangang is a green and healthy city. We want to keep it that way. And remanufacturing is one of the ways to do that.”

World Remanufacturing Summit These sentiments were reflected on numerous occasions during the World Remanufacturing Summit in Shanghai from

The recycling industry is a sunrise industry.” “Remanufacturing is an advanced form of the circular industry, Yao Xin continued. “Over the past 10 years remanufacturing has taken root in our country. It can be described as a set of thousands of pet projects that have legal status and the intention is to support them as strategic and emerging industries in which ministries take a deep interest. Although currently of a relatively small scale the prospects are bright.”

According to plans, the current green field will, within a few years, be home to five product categories, Auto Parts, Metallurgical and Engineering Machinery Equipment Manufacturing, Machine Tool, Mould and Cutting Tool Remanufacturing, Electronic Office Equipment Manufacturing and Remanufacturing Equipment Production. These will be supported by a Reman R&D Centre, a Remanufacturing Test Centre, a Remanufacturing Electronic Commerce Centre, a Remanufacturing Logistics Distribution Centre, a Remanufacturing Incubation Centre and finally, a Dismantling and Cleaning Centre. As the Base is included in China’s 12th Five Year Plan, the entire project qualifies for Government and city government support. With the Base’s groundbreaking ceremony taking place on 8 November 2013, the project is now off to its official start. Over the coming years the five-seven reman plants will begin to rise from the field on the outskirts of Zhangjiangang - as will be the case on the outskirts of other Chinese cities.

From the academic world, the main speakers included Professors Xu Binshi and Zhu Sheng of the National Key Laboratory, Rolf Steinhilper of Bayreuth University and Dr. Nabil Nasr of Rochester Institute of Technology, who, between them, form the steering group of the World Remanufacturing summit. At the end of the event, Dr. Nabil Nasr announced that the third summit will take place in Rochester in September 2014. William Schwarck, Editorin-Chief of ReMaTecNews delivered an introductory presentation at the beginning of the proceedings.

Other issues Other speakers included APRA Chairman Joe Kripli and APRA board member Fernand Weiland, and the range of issues comprised European remanufacturing of heavy duty and off-road vehicle components (including tyres). Half the presentations focused on other types of remanufacturing such as healthcare equipment, reman of laser equipment, machine tools and photocopiers. A month later, an APRA forum presided over by Joe Kripli, APRA’s new President and Chairman, attracted a sizable number of participants. Organised during the Automechanika Shanghai Exhibition, the forum and the concurrent reman pavilion represented yet another sign of China’s rising focus on reman. There will be more to come.

Sercore - broadening its horizons Spanish remanufacturer establishes new links with China and the US Founded in 1980 as a spare-part shop, Spanish remanufacturer Sercore is looking forward to 2014 as a significant milestone in its evolution. Over the next twelve months the company will not only continue its expansion in its domestic market, it will also take significant strides forward in new markets such as the US and China.

While the agreement could not, perhaps, be described as revolutionary for Sercore’s overall development, the deal - which comes into force later in the year - represents a very important step, opening up new markets in North and South America.

“Moving into the American markets - North and South America - as well as China may seem like a big challenge for a business like ours,” says owner Juan Iglesias. “But we have invested a lot of time and money expanding the business in recent years and we’re confident that we’re going to succeed. steering units, in 1982 Sercore became a fully dedicated parts remanufacturer, and over the following 30 years has developed its range to include EPS (electronic power steering), EHPS (electronic hydraulic steering pumps), hydraulic steering pumps, air compressors in addition to its drive shaft, steering rack and power steering programs.

The company currently employs a workforce of 63 and has a turnover of 4.5 million euros.

AutoSport’s fast track for remanufacturers

Over four days, the UK’s Autosport International show generates over £1 billion worth of new business. Steve McQueen reports on the opportunities for remanufacturers. Established remanufacturing specialists, aspiring newcomers and regular suppliers to the reman industry were among more than 300 exhibitors who attended Europe’s largest motorsport trade event in Birmingham in January. It’s not hard to see why. Almost every stand with a racing car on view in the Performance Car side of the show, features an opportunity - a potential new customer for over 80,000 buyers from 60 different countries. From a reman perspective, F1 Cars, Dragsters, Touring Cars, Rally Cars, Club Racing Car and Europe’s fastest growing motorsport - Drift Cars - are all likely to require the services of an engine or gearbox remanufacturer, or a remanufactured part of some kind, at some stage of the season: “The 2JZ block that we use, for example, is a 20 year old engine. Every now and then it has to be re-bored and re-lined. Some

gearboxes need to be stripped down with a view to replacing the bearings after every two or three rounds of racing,” said Chris Arthur of the Lucas Oil Drift Team. Products from team sponsor Lucas Oil help limit the damage, but if trouble does call, he turns to Scottish company, Diemax Engineering. That’s an aeronautical parts specialist with its very own drift car team to support. In order to do so, the Dunfermlinebased company uses Computer Numerically Controlled machining techniques to reman and repair racing gearboxes for other teams. Now it has established Diemax Motorsport to further exploit the ‘lucrative’ reman motorsport market. Bosch Motorsport, exhibiting over in the AutoSport Engineering side of the show, has been tapping into motorsport’s reman opportunities on ECUs, starters and alternators for some time, now:

“Take an alternator from a motorsport environment. It may be hand-wound. That means it is very expensive. You don’t want to replace that unit every time,” said a Bosch design engineer. “Instead, teams come to us for a rebuild. Some parts are replaced, others rebuilt. The units are cleaned, tested on a test stand for quality, then they are returned to the customer. It’s a bespoke remanufacturing service that we are offering and the demand is high.” Andy Borg is Managing Director of the UK-based, but Dutch-owned, surface and heat treatment specialist TTI Group. He says crankshaft remanufacturers supporting classic car racing teams form a large source of his company’s business. Business development manager Vince Belsey at Engine Parts UK says 60% of its customers are engine remanufacturers with motorsports customers, while Jake Cope’s fledgling company 3J Driveline is only 18 months old. He hopes exhibiting at the show will get his business off to a flying start. “We currently make and re-engineer gear cases and we also see the odd differential, but there is a significant market out there for remanufacturing specialists and we are keen to build a share of it.”

With the reorganisation of the worldwide IAM activities, ZF Lenksysteme GmbH and ZF Services aim to achieve clear advantages for the customer, ZF said:

“Making sufficient quantities of used steering systems available for remanufacturing requires a well-organized reconditioning of used parts,” ZF says. ZF Services and ZF Lenksysteme GmbH have already established a reconditioning system in many European countries by means of a deposit system via wholesale distributors. The system is scheduled to be expanded worldwide.

Uniform measures ZF Services says it plans to optimise the availability of products and services as well as implement uniform measures to promote sales. “As a major OEM supplier for steering systems, ZF Lenksysteme GmbH partners its vehicle manufacturers world-wide right from the initial development phases through to the start of production,” ZF states.

Keeping a legend alive Automotive remanufacturing, in general, is aimed at mass produced vehicles. Highly specialised niche-players, however, are gaining ground. ReMaTecNews reports on UK-based Aston Workshop which has established a position of its own within the rarefied world of luxury sports car restoration. Remanufacturing is about extending product life and maintaining, even enhancing, value. That goes for the millions of auto parts that are remanufactured around the world each year. It also goes for the more specialised vehicle and component types that are restored or remanufactured albeit in smaller number. These maybe less often in the public eye, perhaps. Nevertheless, they also represent the fine art of remanufacturing. One such example can be found in Beamish in

County Durham in Northern England. Here Aston Workshop, established in 1988 by owner Bob Fountain, testifies to Aston Martin owners’ love of their cars – and to the brands value regardless of the individual vehicles’ age or state. The business buys and sells Aston Martins but its in-depth strength lies in its services which includes maintenance, replacement, remanufacturing and warranty work to any model of Aston Martin ever made - from the very first pre-war cars to the latest supercars.”

“We even have customers flying in from Japan or South America,” says Head of Engineering Kevin Hutson. “Whether our customers are buying, selling, upgrading or restoring their beloved Aston Martins, we believe that we offer the best team to assist them.” Employing a workforce of 40, mainly Aston Martin-trained technicians, Aston Workshop is located off the beaten track in a rural part of Northern England where the company was born in a barn 25 years ago. Today the barn is a distant memory. Instead the “workshop” is home to impressively modern facilities that reflect the global business operating beneath the roof. These comprise a very modern reception, a huge parts area with parts for every Aston Martin model ever designed, a showroom with some 40 Aston Martins and the workshop, the heart of the company where its restorations are carried out.

A separate block to the rear of the workshop houses a state-of-the-art paint, bodywork and chassis facility, which not only supplies the workshop but also deals with crash repairs and one-off paint repairs etc.

“There are some 5,000 to 10,000 parts that comprise an Aston Martin. Some are non-wearing and unlikely to significantly deteriorate as a function of age; but others wear, are subject to corrosion and in the case of electrical equipment prone to failure as a result of degraded insulation and embrittlement,” explains Kevin Hutson. “Seals become stiff with age, surface wear occurs and paint and corrosion protection becomes damaged. Rectifying this deterioration takes time and resource. The quality of any restoration is crucially dependent upon all these hidden components having been restored to a fully serviceable condition or replaced. Only when they are ready can they be reassembled to create a fully restored car. “

A one stop shop for all things Aston Martin, Aston Workshop undertakes an extremely broad range of tasks for its customers - from tax disc holders to a complete re-creation of a DB4 GT Zagato and everything in between. “The restoration of any Aston Martin can be a lengthy and expensive process but we take pride in being able to meet just about any request the client might have, and if the necessary parts or methods don’t already exist, we will either re-fabricate obsolete parts or design and fabricate a solution in house,” says Hutson. “This allows owners to fully enjoy classic ownership whilst discretely ‘modernising’ the car to give it better performance, reliability, comfort and safety.”

Business leaders gather to discuss the circular economy Early March will see a wide range of business leaders coming together in London to debate moves towards the circular economy. Scheduled for March 4 and 5 in the ExCel exhibition centre in the British capital’s East End, the “Resource” conference and exhibition is labeling itself “Europe’s first large-scale event for the circular economy. It aims at addressing the challenges facing businesses that wish to embrace the circular economy. This includes remanufacturers and their suppliers world-wide. “The new circular economy require a major rethink of product design, ownership models and end of life thinking, the organisers say.

One of Europe’s outstanding experts in the field of sustainability for a generation, Walter R. Stahel has been advocating ‘service-life extension of goods - reuse, repair, remanufacture - as they apply to industrialised economies. He co-founded the Product Life Institute in Geneva, Switzerland, a consultancy devoted to developing sustainable strategies and policies, after receiving recognition for his prize winning paper ‘The Product Life Factor’ in 1982. Walter Stahel’s ideas have contributed enormously to what is known as the circular economy in which industry adopts the reuse and service-life extension of goods as a strategy of waste prevention, regional job creation and resource efficiency.

“Representatives from extraction, design, recycling, manufacturing, retail and resource recovery must come together to capitalise on the commercial opportunities of a circular economy.,” says Dr. Ben Walsh of the UK’s CRR, Centre for Remanufacturing and Reuse, which will attend the event. “Resource is the first major conference and exhibition for organisations looking to develop strong resource strategy and resilient resource security. The CRR will be showing that remanufacturing is central to the circular economy and should form the cornerstone of any government strategy.”

According to the organisers, UBM Live, participants include major retailers, public sector bodies, manufacturers, remanufacturers and materials reprocessors. Between them they will “share their views of how businesses are changing and the problems facing them in a future where critical raw materials are in shorter supply.” François-Michel Lambert, President, Institute of the Circular Economy and Walter Stahel of the Product Life Institute are some of the prominent figures who will join leading firms such as Cisco, Ecover, and H&M to debate how to get materials back and build so-called ‘closed loop’ strategies.

Sweden’s STS Group on the expansion trail Located minutes from the E6 highway, that links Norway and western Sweden with the European continent, transmission specialists, STS Group, occupies a centrally located, strategic position outside Stenungsund, North of Gothenburg. This will become even more important when, over the next two years, the company completes a major expansion programme that will initially result in a 1,000 sq. m. warehouse facility. Further buildings will be added in two subsequent stages. “The main purpose of the investment is to create a modern and efficient logistics centre for the entire group,” says Ola Stålebo who, together with his brother Erik, runs the group. “For several years now, we’ve been renting external warehouse capacity and now we want to move this in-house.” “We also see increasing demand for core handling services for our clients. We’ve already undertaken this for several customers but with the new facility we’ll be able to promote this more actively.” One contributing factor behind STM Group’s

Important events in 2014 To strengthen our networking and lobbying activities, in 2012 FIRM decided to enter into a closer partnership with APRA Europe, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association’s Europen division. Since then reciprocal membership, regular meetings on board level and mutual participation in Annual General Meetings have been introduced. During the 2013 general meeting, the collaboration operation was further extended to include additional administrative and organisational services offered by APRA’s office in Germany – without affecting FIRM’s office in Brussels.

Workshop in Italy in May One initital result of thIs decision is FIRM’s integration in APRA’s 2014 symposium, that will be held in Rimini, Italy end of May. Here, we will have our traditional ½-day spring workshop with hopefully all members in order to meet, exchange experiences and with FIRM and APRA-members, discuss current and future projects as well as PR- and lobbying strategies with APRA.

International Engine Remanufacturers Conference 2014 is the 50th anniversary of both the New Zealand and the Australian Engine Reconditioners Association (NZERA / ERA). To mark the anniversary, an international conference is being organized in Surfers Paradise in Queensland, Australia, on Thursday 25th - Sunday 28th September. The event will, amongst other, comprise: - Special event for engine remanufacturers, manufacturers and suppliers to the industry from associations from around the world. - Machinery Displays: As a practical solution to giving equipment manufacturers and suppliers opportunities for displaying equipment at the international conference, the intention is to set up various types of equipment in local reconditioning and engineering workshops. This will allow the equipment to be up and running for

The conference in September in Australia will be great opportunity to continue this important work. More details of WERC’s projects and strategies will be presented in later editions.

Remanufacturer of the Year 2014 in Las Vegas ReMaTecNews’ prestigious Remanufacturer of the Year Award for 2014 will, for the first time, be awarded in a non-European country – USA. Instituted in 2005 and won by a string of world-class remanufacturers and suppliers, the winner of the award will be announced during the first edition of the new Big R/ReMaTec USA exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada from November 1 to November 3, 2014.

The decision to announce the winner of the award during the APRA-Amsterdam RAI event - underlines Amsterdam RAI’s intention to further develop the links between the two remanufacturing exhibitions on each side of the Atlantic. The Las Vegas trade show is the first in a new partnership between the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association and the organisers of the biennial ReMaTec exhibitions in The Netherlands.

BigR/ ReMaTecUSA 2014 off to a strong start The US reman industry is giving the new BigR/ReMaTecUSA show a warm welcome. Nine months before the show kicks off in Las Vegas, Nevada, 50 per cent of the space at the two large ballrooms in the Rio Hotel and Convention Centre has been booked. The new show focus on remanufacturing, its restyled look and feel, the enhanced networking opportunities and international marketing activities seem to be major reasons for exhibitor booking early. The show’s co-location with ATRA’s Powertrain Expo is another factor. The BigR/ReMaTecUSA is jointly organized by APRA, the Automotive Parts Remanufactueers Association and Amsterdam RAI, the organisers of the biennial ReMaTec reman shows in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

2014 World Reman Summit in Rochester, New York

Joe Mejaly joins AxleTech

The Golisano Institute for Sustainability in Rochester, New York, will host the third World Remanufacturing Summit in September 2014. The event will be the third of its type following the inaugural summit in Bayreuth, Germany, in 2012, and the follow up in Shanghai in December 2013. A partnership between Bayreuth University in Germany, Rochester Institute of Technology in New York State, US, and the National Key Laboratory for Remanufacturing in Beijing, the summits aim at strengthening links between the reman industry and the world of science/research. The annual events will rotate between the three scientific institutions in Europe, Asia and the United States. ReMaTecNews is the media partner for summit series. “Remanufacturing has the potential to reduce the environmental footprint of manufacturing by leveraging the residual economic value in return products,” says Nabil Nasr, associate provost and director of Rochester Institute of Technology’s Golisano Institute for Sustainability. “Due to the need to make a wide range of products more

He was responsible for drivetrain, undercarriage, remanufactured products and service logistic solutions. Mejaly joined Meritor in 1995. He served as the co-chairman of Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week and has been an active participant in the Heavy Duty Business Forum
