ReMaTecNews December 2014 | Number 6 | Volume 14 ReMaTecNews, the only international news m agazine and website dedicated to automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing worldwide, is an independent channel for news, views and d evelopments within the r emanufacturing industry. Published by Amsterdam RAI B.V. P.O. Box 77777 1070 MS Amsterdam The Netherlands In association with
Reman on a roll While these lines are being written, visitors, exhibitors, organisers and association representatives are returning to their daily duties after a hectic week in Las Vegas. By tradition, the eight days of APRA’s BigR, ATRA’s Powertrain Expo, and the Automotive Industry Week’s AAPEX and Sema shows in early November turn the world’s gambling capital into the global centre for remanufacturing. 2014 was no exception. Even so, this year in Vegas was no conventional occasion. The renamed – and revitalised – BigR show proved a substantial new initiative on the 2014 agenda. Under the new name of BigR/ReMaTecUSA the event is destined for steady growth as minor glitches are ironed out and further progress is made. That much is clear from the response from visitors and exhibitors alike. The co-location with ATRA’s Powertrain exhibition and the move to the Rio Conference Centre did not exactly “harm” the event either. It’s almost tempting to say that in terms of confidence and self-evaluation, the automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing community seems on a roll. This, too, could be concluded from the development of the Motor and Equipment Remanufacturer Association, MERA’s reman pavilion at Sand’s down the road from the Rio. Bigger, broader and sold out long before the opening, the pavilion serves as yet another example of rising interest in all things reman, especially from the bigger boys. Surely another positive sign for the industry as a whole. With the Vegas shows behind us, the focus moves towards Asia, where a Chinese event organiser has decided to host a so-called Asian Reman Summit in Singapore to be followed by conferences in Shanghai in early December as well as the Automechanika show in the same city a few days later. These are busy times for the industry, indeed. Do we somehow detect a slight sense of exhaustion? Of overkill? A realisation that too many cooks may spoil the broth? The world is a big place and there is space and a need for different manifestations in different areas. Yet, it’s sometimes hard to escape a feeling that perhaps there may be a time when more coordination across countries or continents, rather than less, might benefit remanufacturing.

It’s often stated that automotive/heavy duty remanufacturing should speak with one voice. Could it be that between them, show organisers could do more to come together for bigger, even better, events for the whole industry? Worth thinking about? Quite possibly.

Germany’s Knorr-Bremse boosts reman operations Over the next three years you will see a number of new initiatives involving reman in a number of Knorr-locations.” Now considered a strategic growth area within the Knorr-Bremse group, its reman operations has made considerable advances over the past year and a half. In addition to the establishment of a separate reman division, the company has strengthened remanufacturing of EAC (electronic air control) and EBS (electronic braking system) modules and compressors. In 2013 Knorr-Bremse also opened a new line for compressor reman at its site in Lisieux in France. Next in line is further work with air compressors, actuators, electronic brake systems and other product lines. Asked what these will be, Merwert and Koehler will only say: “That depends on the complexity of the product in question.” There seems little doubt, though, that the more than one hundred year old Knorr-Bremse is committed to, as it says “the complete package.” As Knorr-Bremse states in a recent brochure: “As the remanufacturing process regenerates an entire product and not just materials, it represents the highest form of recycling. Compared with the entire value chain system for new products, a remanufactured product can save up to 98 % of new materials.” n
Dr. Daniel Koehler
Frank Merwert and Daniel Koehler: At the centre of Knorr-Bremse’s remanufacturing activities In line with the steadily rising number of other major component manufacturers, Germany’s Knorr-Bremse, the world’s premier supplier of braking systems for commercial vehicles, is further strengthening its focus on remanufacturing. Having established a centralised department for reman products last year, the Munich-based brake giant expects to significantly expand its reman operations in Germany and elsewhere. Signs of Knorr-Bremse’s ambitions can also be found in the company’s most recent annual report and brochures which have, increasingly, extolled the benefits of reman and outlined
Knorrs ambitions within the area. A further sign is the 2013 appointment of Dr. Daniel Koehler, a former scientist from the University of Bayreuth in Bavaria (Germany), who, together with fellow Remanufacturing Manager Frank Merwert, heads up the new reman business unit. The aim is to significantly grow Knorr Bremse’s reman operations by 2018. “The growing focus on remanufacturing is, in part, a response to international market demand – from both the IAM and from OEs,” explained Frank Merwerth and Dr. Koehler in a conversation with ReMaTecNews. Moreover, it’s in keeping with the overall strategic focus of the company.
Dr. Daniel Kohler graduated as a business engineer from the University of Bayreuth where he finished his doctoral thesis, Regenerative Supply Chains. Before joining Knorr-Bremse Dr. Kohler was engaged in developing a reman unit for a privately owned Chinese company in Guangdong, China and ZF for a full-service workshop concept.
Frank Merwerth, Remanufacturing Manager Having graduated as an engineer from the University of Stuttgart, Frank Merwert joined Knorr-Bremse in 2001 with responsibility for Strategy and Business Development. He also led the Alltrucks Joint Venture with Bosch and ZF for a full-service workshop concept.

FTE buys brake caliper business from Scandinavian Brake Systems FTE Automotive, the large German manufacturer of hydraulic brake parts and clutches, has announced that it has acquired the brake caliper remanufacturing business of Denmark-based SBS, Scandinavian Brake Systems. The completion of the deal, worth in the region of 35 million dollars, awaits approval by European regulators but the two parties say that they’re confident that the deal will go ahead.
Headquartered near Nuremberg in Germany, FTE has divisions in the US, Mexico, Brazil, China and India, and employs around 3,600 people. In 2013 its revenue totalled approx. 6 billion dollars. The agreement is an extension of the two companies’ strategic cooperation and means that FTE acquires the entire remanufacturing brake caliper productionline from SBS. The agreement also ensures SBS continued access to one of Europe’s widest product ranges within brake calipers to the company’s customer portfolio, the two companies said in a statement. Since 2010, SBS and FTE have been partners in a joint venture for remanufacturing of brake calipers in Presov, Slovakia, with SBS owning 51% and FTE 49% of the share capital. Under the terms of the deal FTE acquires the entire brake caliper productionline in Presov as well as SBS remanufacturing production in Støvring in northern Jutland. The agreement comprises all Støvring employees associated with the caliper production. Employees working with the distribution activities in Støvring remain with SBS. It is expected that 117 employees will be transferred to FTE as a result of the agreement.
Andreas Thumm, CEO, FTE Automotive
Hans Fuglgaard, CEO of SBS, said: “The divestment can be seen as a natural consequence of the core skills that FTE and SBS have contributed until now under the partnership. FTE has industrial core skills and thus the opportunity to develop the production further. SBS has a thorough knowledge of the automotive aftermarket for calipers and other wear parts combined with an effective, international distribution network.”
Hans Fuglgaard, CEO, SBS: “A natural consequence.” Andreas Thumm, CEO of FTE Automotive added: “The acquisition of SBS’ brake caliper business is a further, important step in the FTE Group’s strategy for growth. The successful integration of the business supports considerably strengthens the strategic development of our aftermarket activities. n

Las Vegas revived once again. “We all know that the old BigR has been somewhat stagnant in recent years,” said APRA President - and outgoing Chairman Joe Kripli. “There is no doubt that this year has seen a big improvement and that we’re now on the right course. Exhibitors reported good traffic and we have received a lot of positive feedback. I’m very confident that the show will continue to grow next year. In fact, I have spoken to several potential exhibitors who tell me they plan to sign up in 2015.”
By William Schwarck Viva Las Vegas! Or should it be “Reviva Las Vegas”? That was one question that came to mind as the world’s remanufacturers returned home after a busy industry week in Las Vegas. As usual, SEMA, ATRA’s Powertrain Expo and Aapex, with its growing Reman pavilion, provided plenty of food for thought for rebuilders and remanufacturers. Perhaps of more immediate interest was how the industry would receive the revived BigR/ReMaTecUSA, the successor to APRA’s longstanding reman show. As it turned out, the answer was “well” - so well, in fact, that it seems fitting to apply the term “revived.” That was certainly a common view when exhibitors and visitors from all continents, with the exception of Antartica, met in Vegas between November 1 and November 3. At the end of the three days, the BigR/ReMaTecUSA show and its cousin, the
adjoining ATRA Powertrain Expo, had attracted numbers significantly in excess of the past many years to the Rio Hotel and Conference Centre and to shown the way towards the future. Strong annual reman show “We decided to wait and see how it would turn out this year,” one visitor said. “Having seen it, our intention is to join next year. North America needs a strong annual reman show and it seems that we now have one.” The figures provide plenty of evidence. With 92 exhibitors from 15 countries, a 100 per cent increase in floor space booked and close to 1,400 registrations, the show more than lived up to the organisers’ expectations. Moreover, the number of foreign exhibitors (32) of which the majority were first timers, represented a clear break with the trends of recent years. As US markets are beginning to recover after years of slow-down, European and Asian remanufacturers and their suppliers are now turning their attention to North America
Break with the past With its array of side events, workshops and seminars, presentations at the ReMaTec theatre lecture platform at the back of the exhibition hall and the opening cocktail reception attended by some 300 people, the Big R/ReMaTecUSA 2014 clearly represents a break with the past and all signs are that the downward trend is about to be reversed. The fact that, in 2015, the show and ATRA’s Powertrain Expo will run concurrently over all three days, is one more indication of the significance of the two events. For anyone doubting the re-emergence of Las Vegas as
The opening of the show, from left to right: Niels Klarenbeek, Show Manager, Theo Lingmont, Director of International Exhibitions at Amsterdam RAI & Joe Kripli, President at APRA the autumn capital of remanufacturing, further evidence could be found down the road two days later. Here, like last year, MERA’s reman pavilion at AAPEX boasted a full house several months before the opening. For Amsterdam RAI, the large European show organiser and conference centre in the Netherlands, the new collaboration with the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association, was, in many ways, a step into the unknown. Although the company has considerable experience with trade shows outside Europe, the BigR/ReMaTecUSA represented two
ReMaTecNews | 11
significant “firsts” – one its debut outside Europe as far as reman is concerned and the other a first step into the US market. In reality, that step turned out to lead to into familiar territory.
“There is no doubt that we’re now on the right course” The challenge “Visitor numbers were up on last year, exhibitor numbers were up, we welcomed a large crowd to our opening reception and the Remanufacturer of the Year award and we’re delighted,” Niels Klarenbeek, Show Manager at Amsterdam RAI, commented. “The task is now to learn from our experience and make an even better show in 2015. Our exhibitors seem to expect the same. No less than 45 per cent of the exhibiting companies have already re-booked for 2015. “We’re delighted to note that the show attracted buyers or trade delegations from Brazil, Korea and China,” Klarenbeek added. “This is fully in line with our overall plan for broadening the show to become more international and, in the longer term, to bring more associations into the ReMaTec concept.” n
ReMaTec 2015 Amsterdam & Big R/ReMaTecUSA 2015 The BigR/ReMaTecUSA shows are jointly organised by the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA) and Amsterdam RAI, owners and organisers of the biennial ReMaTec remanufacturing shows in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. BigR/ReMaTecUSA is the successor to APRA’s International Big R Show which has been located in Las Vegas for decades. BigR/ReMaTecUSA 2015 will be held from October 31 till November 2 at the Rio Hotel, Las Vegas, NV. The 2015 ReMaTec show in Europe will run from June 14 to June 16 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
New APRA Chairman: Tim Roth Traditionally the BigR shows mark the changing of the guard at APRA, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association. 2014 was no exception. After one year, Chairman and President Joe Kripli handed the gavel over to Tim Roth who will preside over APRA’s direction until November 2015. Joe Kripli, one of the industry’s veterans, will continue to run APRA on a day-to-day basis as the association’s president. Tim Roth, who is President of SRC Power Systems in Springfield, Missouri, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Missouri University of
Science & Technology and an Executive MBA from Washington University in St. Louis. He has had 25 years of experience in executive leadership, business development, manufacturing management and engineering and will, he says, work towards expanding the association’s services to members and maintaining focus on promoting the benefits of remanufacturing, “the original green industry.” “Demonstrating the value of membership to the members, and spreading the knowledge of reman is important, “ Tim Roth says. “Further challenges are reaching out to other organizations and getting the message across to consumers.” n

A legend in his lifetime has contributed significantly to the reputation and respect that remanufacturing enjoys today. For that reason, and for many other achievements, Jack Stack is the winner of ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year Award 2014. Honoured during an award ceremony in the Rio Hotel and Conference Centre in Las Vegas during the BigR/ReMaTecUSA in early November, Jack Stack is the tenth recipient of the Award and, judging from the applause on the day, a highly respected one. Visionary leader “Jack Stack is a true visionary leader and a worthy winner of ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturer of the Year Award. We’re proud to place his name in our list of recipients,” said William Schwarck, Editorin-Chief of ReMaTecNews and Chairman of the Panel of Judges for the award when announcing the winner. Once named one of America’s smartest strategists by a business magazine, Stack has been the driving force behind Missouri-based SRC since, in the late 1980s, he salvaged a failing International Harvester affiliate from going under turning it into a highly profitable business.
“When you appeal to the highest level of thinking, you get the highest level of performance” The story has become renowned in American business – as has the founders’ name. The way employee-owned SRC has come to epitomise, what businesses can achieve when 1500 employees are kept fully updated on all financial aspects, can be seen as nothing short of remarkable. Commitment to quality, innovation and straight dealing is part of it. Jack Stack Whatever their achievements, few people become legends. Even fewer in their lifetime. Some, however, do. One is Jack Stack, the founder, inspiration, driver and motivating force behind Springfield Remanufacturing Company, SRC, in Missouri and, for that matter, an extensive range of associated companies.
During this 66-year old Chicago-born business leader’s thirty years in charge of one of the world’s premier remanufacturing companies, Jack Stack has not just created a highly successful business. He also masterminded the creation of a unique corporate culture that is adopted in more than 100 companies across the world, the so-called Open Book Management. And along the way he
Over the years the reman industry has been subject to a great deal of suspicion for “cowboy” practices. By and large, this lies in the past as the industry increasingly meets new standards, adopts advanced technologies and fulfils rising customer demands. Under Stack’s leadership, SRC has played a role in every field in which it operates.
ReMaTecNews | 13
Corporate culture One characteristic, however, that distinguishes SRC from most, if not all, companies in the motor industry, is a corporate culture with a huge emphasis on job-satisfaction and mutual respect. At it’s seven plants in and around Springfield, Missouri, the employees – associates, as SRC calls them – perform their tasks in a spirit of co-operation and dedication to permanent improvement. Jack Stack with members of the jury. From left Doug Wolma, Jack Stack, William Schwarck, Volker Schittenhelm (Not on the photo: Fernand Weiland).
Is it almost too good to be true? Within the company it’s whispered that some long-standing “associates” retire as millionaires – regardless of whether they come from the shop floor or from an administrative department.“The key to it all,” says Jack Stack, “is to involve people, making full use of their skills and give them a share in the outcome. At SRC our most powerful asset is our people. When you appeal to the highest level of thinking, you get the highest level of performance.” You also get ReMaTecNews’ Remanufacturers of the Year Award. n

Are you using the CORRECT alternator pulley? Over 60 million vehicles worldwide are now factory-equipped with a Litens Overrunning Alternator Decoupler (OAD) pulley rather than a conventional solid or one-way clutch pulley. An OAD’s primary function is to reduce the noise, vibration and harshness common with today’s lean engine designs, while improving fuel efficiency and lowering the risk of premature accessory drive component failures. An OAD is similar in appearance to other pulley designs, but its patented internal decoupling system plays a vital role in synchronizing the belt drive system. When replacing an OAD-equipped alternator pulley, the only acceptable choice is another OAD unit. In future issues, we will explore various topics relating to OADs such as: function, benefits, failure diagnosis, replacement rates, etc.

Focus on technology at Eckernkamp
The diesel centre is equipped with high-tech test systems for remanufacturing of injectors. By Doris Schulz Engine remanufacturing, diesel service and vehicle repair shop - all in one! For Bielefeldbased remanufacturer Motoren Eckernkamp GmbH, those are the three pillars upon which this small company has built a highly respected business in the German state of North Rhine Westphalia. In no small measure the recipe is based on ongoing investments in up-to-date technologies and equipment as well as in staff training. While keeping a firm eye on day-to-day operations, Eckernkamp, is constantly looking towards the future. The results show.
“Staying updated and always trying to be one step ahead of your competitors is very important to us,” says Rudolf Oesterwinter, one of the company’s two directors. “In fact, it’s the key to our success.” What could seem a fairly simple recipe, however, requires a strong commitment to continuing investment in innovative technologies - and to training the company’s 28 employees. And there is no lack of commitment at Motoren Eckernkamp. The company not only repairs or remanufactures a variety of combustion engines for cars, trucks, buses, construction and agriculture machinery, it even undertakes remanufacturing of parts for locomotives and ships’ engines. Rudolf Oesterwinter heads the

company in Leopoldshöhe near Bielefeld in north western Germany, together with Markus Moeller, who took over from his father, Hermann Moeller, in January 2014. Between them, Oesterwinter and Moeller represent long-term experience and history in remanufacturing. They also exemplify how commitment to detail can take a business to the next level. Continuous growth The company was founded as far back as 1925 as a grinding shop for cylinders and crankshafts. By 1985, it had fallen on difficult times and Hermann Moeller, then CEO of a major engine remanufacturer together with some partners, bought Motoren Eckernkamp out of insolvency. Two years later, Rudolf Oesterwinter joined in, adding a wealth of experience from the remanufacturing industry. With the acquisition of a Lucas-CAV shop they subsequently entered the field of diesel injection technology. “For us the central question has always been what new developments to look at? Asking what we have to do - and what kind of machines and test technology to buy in order to participate successfully in these developments”, Markus Moeller explains. Over time the company has steadily expanded its range of services, moving

into bigger premises by 1997 and adding the third “pillar”, a repair shop for passenger cars, trucks, utility vehicles and motor homes. This section is headed by Marcus Bienert who has been a shareholder in the business for several years. In 2008, Motoren Eckernkamp relocated to a new purpose-built building, including a cleanroom for work on sensitive parts.
“In our industry success depends on well-trained employees. We are happy to play an active role here” Engine remanufacturing For a company the size of Eckernkamp, the focus on state-of-the-art equipment is to be respected – which is also reflected in its membership of Germany’s leading professional organisations. “Our work is performed in accordance with the quality label RAL, which is an important quality certification in Germany. We’re also members
of the VMI (the German Association of Engine Rebuilders) and the GMI (Gütegemeinschaft der Motoreninstandsetzungsbetriebe)”, Markus Moeller explains. “The fact that our quality is spot on, I believe, is demonstrated by our service partnerships with renowned OEMs like Deutz, Volvo Penta, Mitsubishi Diesel Engine, Lombardini and others. In addition, a growing market for us is remanufacturing of engines for vintage and classic vehicles.”
The CEO and shareholders Markus Moeller, Rudolf Oesterwinter and Marcus Bienert (left to right).
Diesel Centre – Sought After Partner of OEMs Hermann Moeller and Rudolf Oesterwinter both demonstrated their nose for business by entering the field of diesel technology. Whether conventional or electronically controlled, there is virtually no injection system or injector which Motoren Eckernkamp is unable to check and repair/remanufacture, they say. “Seven of our staff are highly qualified diesel technology specialists who undergo continuous training. This ensures that they are familiar with the latest systems and can use them to best advantage,” says Markus Moeller. Here, too, the department’s equipment is technologically advanced with several state-ofthe-art test systems from Bosch and Hartridge. The most recent investment is test equipment for the newly developed smart injectors from Delphi, which, among others, are found in Mercedes and DAF Trucks. Moreover, Motoren Eckernkamp is ready to check and repair the E3 pump-nozzle systems for Volvo Penta. “If you don’t take every single step in this area, you’ll inevitably fall by the wayside”, notes Rudolf Oesterwinter. In recognition of its skill levels, Eckernkamp has been a service partner for leading manufacturers like Bosch, Delphi, Denso, Stanadyne and VDO for many years. And, since 2013, also for the official Bosch Diesel-Service. Service, Know-how and Exchange Programmes The company’s customers are mainly workshops that come with engine problems. “Our three mainstays allow us to work directly on the vehicle and to carry out failure diagnosis. Thus, we are able not only to eliminate symptoms of motorengine problems but to determine the reasons”, says Rudolf Oesterwinter. Service and expertise are further competitive advantages for Motoren Eckernkamp in competition with OEMs

in the market for exchange spare parts. This is not least due to the fact that the company has developed exchange programmes for a broad range of engines and injections systems. “We specialise in engines for Fiat Ducato and Iveco Daily, which are also used in industrial units. We have all types of this in stock and constantly buy engines,” Rudolf Oesterwinter explains. “We stock injection systems, high pressure pumps and injectors for all common vehicle models and also sell them beyond Germany’s borders.” “One goal is to expand even more within this area. Our know-how and equipment offer the best prerequisite for this”, adds Markus Moeller. “Yet another plus is the part pick-up service, which we established about a year ago.” In order to maintain highly qualified staff for the future, Motoren Eckerkamp trains young people in professional automotive mechatronics as well as in commercial aspects of running the business. “In our industry success depends on well-trained employees. We are happy to play an active role here”, Rudolf Oesterwinter says. n Virtually all injection systems of all manufacturers can be checked and repaired.

AMC: A fresh beginning in China
Arne Christiansen (right), MD AMC CHINA, is in charge of R&D and production. In 2011 Denmark-based supplier of engine rebuilding, cylindrical-grinding machines and more, AMC-SCHOU, announced its closure after a difficult period under its then owners, Højbjerg Maskinfabrik A/S. In the spring of 2012, after a period of non-activity, the brand and all remaining assets were purchased by Hong Kong businessman Mr. Yujie LI of HONG KONG BESTECH HOLDING CO, LIMITED. Two years later, and within the next few months, the revived AMC will open a new plant in the Chinese city of Zhangjiagang some 100 kilometers north of Shanghai. Here, in the City’s free-trade
zone, AMC, is preparing to re-establish its name as an important supplier of machinery to the reman industry. Equipped with the production machines from the former AMC factory in Aarhus, Denmark, the purpose-built plant in Zhangjiagang will cover 12.000 sq.m.(the first part of 2 buildings), has a capacity of 50 new machines in various models per month and will employ a workforce of up to 80 People. “Since the acquisition of AMC, we have made considerable progress in terms of revitalising the business,” explains Claus Andersen, the former AMC-SCHOU Sales and Marketing Director, who, as MD of AMC Denmark, is heading the new company’s global sales activities. “We have been welcomed back
many of our old customers and with the opening of the new factory we’re confident AMC is entering a new and succesful phase in its history.” The group’s reman activities now comprise AMC China, where all production is centered, and AMC Denmark which has responsibility for global sales of machines and parts. Another AMC director from before the change in ownership, Arne Christiansen, is in charge of production as managing director of AMC China. Since January 2013, AMC-SCHOU has produced machines in a rented facility across from the fiveacre site where the new modern factory is being built. Following nine months of training for eight Chinese technicians in the factory in Denmark, in January the entire factory was dismantled and shipped to Zhangjiagang in 28 containers. Concurrently, several former Danish employees have relocated to China to prepare for the opening of the new AMC-SCHOU factory. “We have spent the past two years building a new platform and I think it’s fair to say that we’re now in a stronger position than ever before,” says Claus Andersen. “During the coming months we will be launching a number of new products and expect to see some very interesting results by the end of the year. n

LET’S 2014 emphasises ‘End of life’ On behalf of APRA, Chairman of APRA Europe Peter Bartel, delivered a presentation at a recent conference in Italy on how increasing raw material costs may restrict the progress of the circular economy in the automotive industry. “It’s important to ensure that vehicles and parts are designed with a view to being remanufactured at a later stage in their life cycle,” Peter Bartel told the high level audience at the LET’S 2014 in Bologna from 29 September to 1 October. Entitled “Leading Enabling Technologies for Societal Challenges” the conference devoted much time to discussing “End-of-Life as a new industry for a sustainable society”.
Organised under the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and supported by the Italian Ministries of Education, Economic Development and Foreign Affairs as well as the European Union Funding for Research and Innovation, the conference discussed the role of the Key Enabling Technologies under Horizon 2020. Horizon 2020 is the European Union Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The conference also discussed how to bridge the gap between scientific and technological research, innovation in industry and access to European and global markets. EU to give millions to reman research Partly thanks to APRA’s efforts in highlighting the benefits of remanufacturing to politicians and other decision-makers, the European Commission has decided to contribute up to six million euros towards a reman-related research project. The project is a Factory of the Future project named “Re-use and remanufacturing technologies and equipment for sustainable product lifecycle management.” “One of the tasks of the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association is to highlight the advantages of remanufacturing,” said Chairman of APRA Europe Peter Bartel. “For some time, we have been promoting the benefits of the sustainable industry to the DGs Trade, Enterprise & Industry, Mobility &Transport, Environment and Research & Innovation. As a result, remanufacturing has become better known by the different Directorate Generals [DGs]. In
consequence of these activities, the European Commission has decided to support our industry by integrating remanufacturing into its concept for the “Factory of the Future”. Areas qualifying for financial support include: • Eco-innovative approaches for product design that consider re-use and re-manufacturing aspects for enhanced product recovery and spare parts/ services support. • New manufacturing and equipment concepts for re-use and re-manufacturing, with improved resource efficiency and service lifetime. • New technologies and automation solutions for the effective disassembly/separation and recovery of advanced materials. • Generation and validation of new business models to improve economic viability of closedloop life cycles which make use of the systemic approaches for product life-cycle management. n
APRA launches translation matrix By Peter Barel, Chairman, APRA Europe If we want to raise awareness of the remanufacturing industry, we have to use the same words for the same product, procedures, methods and terms. I think most of us will agree on that. After all, each of us uses the same wording within our companies and countries. In principle, this should be simple enough, but real life is more complicated because most often remanufacturers and their suppliers have to communicate across borders and in more than one language. For instance, even if they (basically) speak the same language there are wide differences in the terminologies of the US and UK automotive industries, especially within the parts business. As a result - and to facilitate communication within our industry - APRA has prepared a useful multi-language translation matrix for typical terms. The matrix currently comprises several languages: English, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Slovakian, Spanish and Swedish. The work has been extensive, but we consider it important and would like to extend it further to benefit more remanufacturers. Therefore your board would greatly appreciate your support for this project by providing translations in other languages or by reviewing the existing translation matrix. If you can help with other remanufacturing specific wordings, please contact APRA by e-mail at webmaster@ apra-europe.org n

comprises 500 member companies. Re-elected to the board of FIRM were Emre Can Cicin of GMY, Turkey and Jean-Paul Borsten of Bovag, the Netherlands, as vice-president and Treasurer respectively. n
As head of BU Drive’s engine activities, Ortgies has, in recent years, been an active player on the international remanufacturing scene and soughtafter lecturer at conferences and seminars. A mechanical engineer (Dipl.-Ing. TU) by education, he has 30 years’ experience with application, manufacturing and remanufacturing of engines. Building on the work of his predecessor, Ortgies sees the next step as “acquiring new members and reestablishing relations ships with past members. “With more members we’ll be able to offer the membership more services,” he says. Automotive remanufacturers to inspire other industries In many boardrooms in different industries and different markets, board members consider the remanufacturing principles as an important way to enhance the sustainability of their businesses while benefitting from the various business opportunities remanufacturing has to offer. But how to manage important issues like how to manage return logistics?, where to obtain cores?, how to deal with intellectual property?, how to ensure that the reman product line does not
cannibalise the regular business?, how to organise imports/exports of remanufactured goods?, what about warranty? In their struggle with coping with these important issues, many industries look at Automotive Remanufacturing as an example of how it can be done. The automotive industry has one of the most mature remanufacturing operations (established in the early 40’s of the past century), is well organised, has authorised OEs as well as smaller independent players. Sustainability officers, innovators, Entrepreneurs from various industries such as oil & gas, consumer electronics,
corporate finance, accounting, chemical will gather at ReMaTec2015 for a DeepDive into circular economy: best practices from the automotive industry. The DeepDive is organised by the Circle Economy. Without any doubt, these people will walk the show and engage with ReMaTec2015. n
