Lessons learned from SOCRATES2.0 -
Structure follows strategy, tailor-made traffic information follows standardization Annet van Veenendaal (Rijkswaterstaat NL) | March 31th 2022
Outline presentation • What is SOCRATES2.0?
• Why SOCRATES2.0? • Main lessons from the project • Quick guide how to implement the principles of SOCRATES2.0 yourself (SOCRATES2.0 for dummies)
What is
2.0 SOCRATES ?
Januari 2017
SOCRATES2.0 is a horizontal project, paving the way for the future traffic management in Europe: a traffic management that allows for the best use (fast-safe-clean) of existing infrastructure.
What is SOCRATES2.0?
SOCRATES2.0 is co-funded by the European Commission

How can we achieve a win-win-win
Project goals 1. To design, test and evaluate new (and better) services for road users -> the what
2. To design, test and evaluate a cooperation
framework on how to work together -> the how
The WHAT – 5 use cases, 4 pilotsites
The HOW – Cooperation framework
12
The HOW - Cooperation models
Actual speed Lane advice
Environmental Zones Roadworks
Network Optimization
What did we learn on improving services? •
Impossible to improve travel time for every road user but not every road user is up for the most quickest route!
What did we learn on improving services? •
Approximately one third of the advices provided by the automotive industry/service providers has been accepted by users
•
Impact of interactive traffic management depends on: – Follow up rate of the end users
– Number of road users present at the specific link – Number of serviceproviders in the collaboration
What did we learn on public-private collaboration? 1. Start with an equal position and build TRUST 2. Put the road user central and focus on the WIN-WINWIN for all parties involved 3. Is there a BUSINESS MODEL for the private parties? 4. Agree on STANDARDS 5. Learn each other’s LANGUAGE
2.0 SOCRATES
for dummies
1. Start with the win-win-win 2. Choose a cooperation model which suites the win-win-win (structure follows strategy) 3. Unless legislation, there must be a viable business case for serviceproviders 4. Work on standardisation (on EU level) 5. For the coordinated approach: use the possibilities serviceproviders have to make tailormade advices (tailormade follows standardisation)
