There’s a festival explosion going down with a new one seemingly popping up every weekend. But there are never enough deeply weird ones. Last year we made a call for people to think of a unique festival that would best express Amsterdam’s own quirkiness. But alas, we got no response... Meanwhile other Dutch cities are ahead of the curve: Utrecht’s Italian Street Painting Festival in August, and Rotterdam’s Sea Shanty Festival in September. Surely we can come up with something on par with Vienna’s cocktail robotics Roboexotica festival (where they discuss ‘Programming machines to write literature so humans don’t have to’!), or Point Pleasant, Virginia’s Mothman Festival (a celebration of a strange bird-like humanoid whose reported ’60s sightings were linked to a tragic bridge collapse!); or Ohio’s Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival (which features monolithic duct tape sculptures created by local artists!); or Toronto, Canada’s Alien Abduction Festival (free UFO rides!)? The new night mayors Club Zonder Filter call for small and sweet initiatives.

By Isabel Serval Kristel Mutsters (25) and Josine Neyman (26)—together known as Club Zonder Filter—are the shiny new Nachtburgemeesters of Amsterdam. For the coming two years, these ‘night mayors’ will be in charge of bridging the gap between the city’s legislators and its party life. Club Zonder Filter are the successors of Chiel van Zelst, who convinced them to join the race in the first place.

Mutsters and Neyman were elected into their new positions on May 19th in Paradiso. ‘We didn’t actually expect to win, but we’re so glad our active campaigning paid off,’ says Neyman. She

spent a night club-hopping with their cameraman Arjan Ackerman to make their video presentation, with friends and colleagues elaborating on why the girls should win. ‘The jury said the combination of all our fans with painted faces in Paradiso and our own persuasive powers and enthusiasm got us the position,’ says Neyman.

Mutsters and Neyman, originally from Zundert and Almelo respectively, say they had fallen in love with Amsterdam a long time ago. They believe many Amsterdammers don’t realise what they have: ‘We see countless possibilities here, Amsterdammers don’t see how spoiled they are,’ says Mutsters. ‘We want to help break the barriers for young people to start new creative initiatives.’

Festivals especially inspire the girls because of their spontaneous and outof-the-ordinary character, and they place a call to Amsterdammers to initiate small festivities to keep the cultural heartbeat pounding. ‘So much unused space in the city can be made into great spots to meet each other and show all what young creative people have to offer,’ proclaims Mutsters.

Although Club Zonder Filter’s new (non-paid) job is formally about the

night, they do admit that part of what they particularly like about festivals is that they start in daytime. For example, they cite the annual Autovrije Zondag, occurring on 21 September of this year, where cars are not allowed in the city centre for a day, as a great occasion to use more of the city for festival-like gettogethers. ‘The city council should use us to make a real cultural happening out of that day,’ says Neyman.

Club Zonder Filter toured the country last year, visiting 12 different festivals.

The girls brought along their (face)paints, glitters, gadgets and dressup garments to neighbourhood festivals like those in Westerpark, or to really big ones like Mysteryland. They busied themselves ‘unfiltering’ festival visitors in some corner of the terrain, because: ‘In Club Zonder Filter, everyone is an artist and everybody is famous. Remember when you were little and you would play with your friends after school?

That’s what we’re trying to create for grown-ups.’

These two do realise that organising events in the open air isn’t always easily accomplished in this city, with all its rules and regulations. They both agree something needs to change in the minds of policy makers. ‘We think local politicians need to open their eyes to all the good things that are going on in this town. Sometimes it seems as if they’re afraid of everything that’s labelled “nightlife”.’ (In response to this charge, alderwoman Carolien Gehrels (PvdA, Culture) says she in fact keeps her eyes wide open, also at night: ‘I’m anxious to meet both night mayors and am very interested in what they can show me of the city’s nightlife.’)

While anticipating the day that this fear has been conquered, Club Zonder Filter encourages people to start their own little festivals in the city and see how far they can go. ‘Just go to the park with a little over a few friends and make a party. Consider this a call for an increase in small and sweet initiatives,’ says the Nachtburgemeesters.

This hardly means that the girls are only about sugar and spice and everything nice. They also came up with the notorious Breezersletjes night that, until recently, took place on Wednesdays at Meander. This student-aimed club asked them to revive the place to attract a broader public. ‘We told them they would need more than just a new flyer for that,’ they say. To their surprise, the idea of slutty behaviour and free Breezers, along with some quality DJs, led to a successful ten-month run.

As if to cleanse their karma, they now have their minds set on a less grubby initiative: ‘We want to organise an evening were young people get to bring their mom and dad along to the club,’ says Neyman.

Festival fiction Making an event out of literature.

By Luuk van Huët It’s a Tuesday night at Spui 25, the academic-cultural centre that opened its doors about a year ago, and a literary discussion is in full swing—put broadly—on whether or not writers should also be expected to perform live. When one of the attending writers, Dirk van Weelden, is asked by Recensieweb’s Eveline Vink if he enjoys giving a literary performance, he scrunches up his face like he just caught a whiff of some sulphurous stench. He glances at Vink, standing on a raised pulpit-like platform, looks across the pillared, high-ceilinged roof over the heads of two dozen literati and answers: ‘You know, sometimes it feels like having to go to church...’

Willem van Zeeland, a literary event organiser also attending the discussion, recalls an almost exactly opposite scenario: ‘When we first started organising literary events at the Lowlands festival in 1998, Freek de Jonge was scheduled to perform before our first writer. To our surprise, he poured out boxes and boxes of maracas into the audience to celebrate his birthday. The festival audience totally loved it... Our writer, not so much.’

Even though this particular literary evening ended up with a nice round of drinks in a cosy pub, the question that arose was still valid: how do you mix festivals and literature without dumbing it down or dulling it up? Seeing as Van Zeeland is not only responsible for the literary aspects of Lowlands, but also organises the upcoming second edition of The Power of Plots—a literary mini-festival, taking place on Tuesday at Melkweg, which aims to be the same for the Maand van het Spannende Boek [Month of the Thrilling Book] what the Boekenbal is for the Boekenweek—I figured he could give me some pointers.

The Power of Plots, Melkweg, 3 June, 19.30, €15.

This is a rant Don’t kill off the Roots Open Air festival.

By Jaro Renout The subsidies for the cultural sector in Amsterdam have just been re-divided. As always, it was high anxiety for artists and producers who depend heavily on these funds. It works like this: the Amsterdamse Kunstraad, a counsel of wise old men and women who claim that they can smell art a mile away, takes a hard look at all the funding appeals. Advice is written for every single appeal and, although not officially binding, is usually implemented as a whole by the city of Amsterdam—because, well, these Kunstraad people know what’s art and what’s not, while civil servants have no clue about these matters. And neither, presumably, has Joe or Jill Public—you know, the gullible guy or gal all this culture is ostensibly made for.

After reading the report, my layman’s eyes were drawn to a few remarkable conclusions. For some stuff that I thought was cool, like Over ’t IJ festival, the money well has run dry. While Holland Festival, although stuck on the same level, still gets a staggering €707,000 to throw a mother load of incomprehensible high culture in the faces of those who care. But hey, that’s something I don’t know much about. Call me Joe. But what really caught my eye and sucked me into a state of frustrating anger was the fact that the Amsterdam Roots Festival is potentially losing €150,000. I can hear you think: so, we’ll skip a few African bands, how important can that be? Well, with just €100,000 more, for example, you can do a completely free festival in Oosterpark, as Roots Festival has been doing for the last 11 years, complete with workshops, a market, exotic food and drinks, a total of seven stages, 40 global artists and 55,000 Amsterdammers. It’s called Roots Open Air and it’s Amsterdam at her very best. Every visitor immediately falls in love with the city when presented with all this multicultural joie-de-vivre. But the wise and probably old men and women of the Kunstraad judged it as not important enough. And what do I know about art and importance?

The amount of €250,000 is exactly what the city spent on ‘Amsterdam Dag’ two years ago. A dazzling event with no less than one medium-sized stage set on Dam square, where happy shoppers and other accidental passers-by could relish the much discussed talents of, amongst others, one Dries Roelvink and Ali B’s cousin. The city officials claim 15,000 Amsterdammers visited the Dam that day. But a mere 98 were surveyed, and I’m sure that number is also a more realistic view on the amount of people who

rambunctious at Lowlands, Van Zeeland replies: ‘There has been a change in the public in recent editions. They’ve become more serious. Ten years ago, you scored points for just throwing sex and comedy in.

Now, they stand in line to have their copies signed by Kader Abdolah and Renate Dorrenstein, while 1700 people listen breathlessly for an hour to Gerard ‘t Hoofd, a winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics.’

Van Zeeland remains evasive on the confirmed line-up for the upcoming Lowlands. ‘I’m afraid I can’t really tell you anything yet, as the programming is only being revealed this weekend at Pinkpop.

But I tend to pick writers who I expect will do well at a music festival and I particularly look for a stage presence. This is very important because most of the audiences haven’t read the recent work of the writer; some might not even know who he or she is.’

Preceding the landscapes of colourful tents, loud music and questionable stains that defines the regular outdoor festival experience, The Power of Plots, is a whole other type of bookish gathering. Van Zeeland explains: ‘It’s sort of like the Boekenbal, but it’s certainly not exclusively invite-only.’

Regardless of how much you’re attracted to the criminal element in your reading choices, the schedule offers some intriguing attractions. Besides writing guests, such as Karin Slaughter, Sietse van der Hoek and Simone van der Vlugt, there’ll be a theatrical adaptation of an Edgar Allen Poe story and, in the Literary Court, a fictional character, in this case the photographer from the film Zomerhitte, will be put on trial, making use of real lawyers and a judge. The night will draw to a close with live performances of the best theme songs from the James Bond films, featuring artists like Anneke van Giersbergen, Wende Snijders and Giovanca, all backed by the New Generation Big Band.

And if blood—even the fictional variety— makes you nauseous, it’s good to know that the theme of this year’s edition is how scientists fight crime, so expect autopsies and blood splatter analysts g(al)ore.

Of course, the two different festivals attract distinctly differing crowds. Van Zeeland notes: ‘The average visitor to The Power of Plots is a bit older and most feel a direct connection to the subject. Besides the writers and publishers, this also applies to a lot of highly motivated readers who are attracted by specific names and titles and the genre as a whole. Since the audience is smaller and already mostly prepared, the performance itself isn’t as important as the content. At Lowlands, you’re likely to attract people who are open-minded and who’ll check out your programme on a whim. But the fact that you have a built-in audience who’re already in high spirits is one of the reasons I like programming for existing festivals so much. I enjoy working with partners, because even if that sometimes causes a complication, that complication itself often forces you to be creative and you often end up with an improved programme or performance.’

showed up especially for the event, presumably to ‘bond’ with each other as Amsterdammers. I was also informed that Dries Roelvink alone has at least that many fans. Anyway, it must have been really important. I wouldn’t know.

But in my humble opinion, Roots Open Air is exactly the image you want to communicate to both Amsterdam and the outside world when you are out to pump yourself up as modern and multicultural. A better advertisement for our little village on the Amstel is unthinkable for that amount of money.

Still, do we need a calculator on this one? Costing the same amount of money and with a few very obvious distinctions, Roots Open Air has more stages, more (national and international) artists, more information, more worthy causes, more Amsterdammers, more cohesion, better food, and has more of a typically Mokum atmosphere than, with all respect, poor Dries would ever be able to achieve.

The choice seems simple for us laymen. Yet somehow, the best event of the year, by every standard, is being quietly suffocated by the experts. That (and I quote) ‘feestje in het Oosterpark’ is not considered art. And not contributing to, well, anything useful. They seem to know best.

So let’s spend some serious money on trivial crap like that plastic monstrosity called ‘Iamsterdam’. You know: that promotional bit of buckshot you see

floating by every once in a while? No lack of funding for that most cunning of plans!

I’m thoroughly sick of all this managerial incompetence, but as you know by now, all this is far beyond the outer limits of my intelligence. History might prove me wrong, and someday it will apparently all make sense.

Still, I can’t help but think: in the future, please sod off with your uninspired, dispassionate, unprofessional, over-budgeted, thrown-together-by-civilservants, utterly insignificant bullshit ‘Amsterdam’ non-events that deeply insult the intelligence of its citizens and shows no respect for, or even comprehension, of this community. And please put our tax money back in that dignified, exemplary and unifying festival that Roots Open Air has been for the past 11 years.

This may come as a surprise to y’all, dear experts, but we’re not stupid. We just don’t know art. Meanwhile, I hope you are all going to be at what might be the last Roots Open Air on 15 June. And I suggest our wethouder Kunst & Cultuur Carolien Gehrels does the same before taking on any recommendations of the Kunstraad. It is never too late to do the right thing. www.amsterdamroots.nl

THURSDAY 29 MAY Film: H3R3TIC! Film Festival If you need any more proof that the underground cinemas of Amsterdam are still alive, kicking and chewing bubble gum at the same time, the VideoInferno crew is dishing out a festival filled with thought provoking films that document the damned, the strange and, yes, the damned strange. The festival takes place at a smattering of locations all over town, ensuring that the list reads as an almost complete listing of who’s who in alternative Amsterdam (though they forgot the Nieuwe Anita). If you are interested in the ‘political utopists, spiritual outlaws and artistic extremists’, the likes of include Timothy Leary, the Unabomber, Anthony LaVey and Charles Manson, as well as everybody’s favourite Scandinavian group of hackers known for their swashbuckling disregard for copyrights, The Pirate Bay, you’re sure to enjoy this array of groundbreaking documentaries. The prerequisite festival parties at the Overtoom 301 and the Dolphin Hotel are similarly eclectically experimental. Just the thing if you’re in the mood for something completely different. Event: Nachtsalon: Superheroes Special Back in the days, every superhero had one superpower, one mission, one enemy and one TV show or comic book. Nowadays, saving the world has become far too complicated for that kind of exclusivity, so in the TV show Heroes there are many heroes and many powers. Despite its complexity, the programme’s super successful, which shows that the whole superpower concept retains its appeal. And so, the next edition of the Nachtsalon is dedicated to those people who have extraordinarily cool powers like, for example, flight, X-Ray vision, time-travel and the ability to save the planet.

Dan Hassler-Forest from the UvA’s media studies department will give a lecture on the often controversial role of traditional and new superheroes in the ‘war on terror’, DJs FS Green and Hayzee will spin super hiphop tunes that are inspired by comics and computer games, and Cassetteboy, those super guys from Croydon, will present their crazy sampling performance. Also on show: Sybil Drew’s documentary Your Friendly Neighbourhood Hero, which follows four people who decide to patrol through their city to help others—while wearing superhero outfits. Now that’s saving the planet for you! Or at least making it a much superer place. (Sarah Gehrke) Joods Historisch Museum, 20.00, €9.

Film: Amsterdam Shorts! Festival Yep, nothing like a good pair of shorts to air the family jewels a bit. And with that crappy joke out of the way, cinephiles everywhere can squeal in delight at the overwhelming array of cinematic choices this week, starting with the fifth edition of the Amsterdam Shorts Festival. Eighty-five films have been selected out of a stagger-

ing 600 entries guaranteeing that you’ll see nothing but the best of the shortiest shorts around. The films that comprise the main competition have been compiled into programmes that focus on an overriding theme, eloquently phrased in a single title such as ‘Balls!’, ‘Sweet!’ and ‘Crooks!’, while the little nippers get a special two-day kid-friendly version in the form of the ‘Shorties!’. On top of that, there are master classes to attend, special showcases from the online film distributor Submarinechannel.com and the Dutch experimental film institute De Filmbank. Film: Cavia turns 25!

The self-styled cosiest little cinema in town has been around for a quarter of a century this weekend, and this is cause for a celebration indeed! On Thursday, the festivities kick off with the help of singer/poet Meindert Talma and a collection of wacky films from a gaggle of Groningers called De Hobbyrockers. Friday will begin on a more serious note, as ex-Cavians and visitors will recall tales from yore and debate the future of the local art house, followed by the documentary Cinemania, which focuses on five celluloid-obsessed New Yorkers. On Saturday, it’s time to Par-Tay like it’s 1983 as the Cavia crew sets up shop in the neighbouring Zaal 100. Be prepared for The Great Cavia Film quiz, alongside ska music courtesy of the Beatzers and tunes from the likes of DJ Duck and DJ G Bean, all lubricated with karma-enhancing cocktails provided by the Amsterdams Solidariteits Komitee Vluchtelingen. SATURDAY 31MAY Event: Volkskrantgebouw 1st Anniversary For one year now, the former Volkskrantgebouw on Wibautstraat has been home to a bunch of artists, designers, musicians, directors and other funky people. Their anniversary party is flashily called ‘The second generation’. Although this suggests that the creative people in this building have a very short life span (much similar to that of mice, for example), the community-like project in Volkskrantgebouw has been going rather well. And the celebration will reflect the diversity of the building’s tenants with an art exhibition, a live drawing and poetry session, dance and theatre performances, video shows, DJs, individual presentations and more. The actual details of the programme are shrouded in mystery as yet, but hey, it’s always nice to be surprised, isn’t it? And given the sheer mass of artists who call the building their home, the potential for a cool and interesting event is great. As for the generation thing: it has been muttered in certain quarters that mice are the most intelligent species on the planet, right before dolphins, and that man takes only third place, so stop worrying. Event: Aids Memorial Day 2008 The first Aids Memorial Service I attended was in the early 1990s. It was a moving experience. There were speeches, people called out names of deceased friends or relatives, candles were lit and afterwards white balloons were released on Dam Square.

Back then, Aids was like a death sentence. Nowadays it’s more like a chronic illness— though the new drugs and therapies don’t perform miracles, and living with Aids is still a serious issue. So far an estimated 4,500 people in the Netherlands have died of it and—despite numerous safe sex campaigns—new infections occur daily. But things have changed. This year’s memorial service is called ‘Toekomst en Hoop!’: Aids may still be a deadly disease, but now, those infected can look to the future and plan ahead.

Stage: Happy Days The Holland Festival, the city’s major annual performance event, opens its don’t-miss lineup this year with Beckett’s Happy Days starring Fiona Shaw. As the eternal optimist Winnie, armed with a toothbrush, pistol and parasol, Shaw spends the entire play buried to her waist, discussing life with her barely present husband Wilie. In Deborah Warner’s acclaimed production, Shaw is buried not in a small pile of sand but in an apocalyptic rubble heap, and her character is less a housewife than an aging diva determined to keep smiling through the setbacks that life offers. After all, Winnie points out, ‘How can one better magnify the Almighty than by sniggering with him at his little jokes, particularly the poorer ones?’ Other theatre events in the coming weeks include an Arabic-language production of Richard III set in the modern-day Middle East; Heiner Müller’s Quartett, a version of Les Liaisons dangereuses starring Barbara Sukowa and Jeroen Willems; Heiner Goebbels’s play-without-actors Stifters Dinge; and the world premiere of Louis Andriessen’s ‘film opera’ La Commedia, with footage by Hal Hartley. SUNDAY1JUNE Opera: Saint-François d’Assise Nothing was predictable in Olivier Messiaen’s career. This titan of 20th-century composition—whose centenary is being fêted far and wide—was sustained by wildly idiosyncratic conceptions of harmony, colour, forward motion and more. An enraptured Christian who was also wowed by birdsong, Messiaen wrote his lone opera in 1983 about St Francis of Assisi, the hyper-individualist and ascetic renowned for preaching to the animals. Immediately lauded as a masterwork, it is perhaps the capstone to Messiaen’s career. As produced

by The Nederlands Opera in conjunction with The Holland Festival, this new version, directed by Pierre Audi, highlights the work’s ritualistic aspect: it proceeds ceremoniously through the nearly four-hour opera’s eight tableaux to provide a non-narrative overview of scenes from a holy life—tracing, as the composer put it, ‘the progress of grace’ in Francis’s soul. Art/Stage: Immovably Centred The artist Arnoud Holleman (also known as the photographer for Amsterdam Weekly’s ‘Attachments’ section on page 3) has a bit of an Auguste Rodin obsession. A couple of years ago his ‘Call Me’ was unveiled in Zwolle featuring a Rodin statue, Adam, which has its own phone number; people who call 0900 400 4242 can hear the statue whine about his fate in a public space. Immovably Centred is inspired by the motto used by Rainer Maria Rilke for his hero-worshipping Rodin biography: ‘The hero is he who is immovably centred.’ A cross media project, Immovably Centred is both a video installation and a series of live performances that will in turn be also incorporated into the video installation. The performances will feature different actors and artists reciting a monologue that dwells on both the megalomania and the fear of failure that, in the wake of Rodin, still drive many contemporary artists. MONDAY 2 JUNE Dance: Kammer / Kammer William Forsythe accepts no barriers. A visionary choreographer who pushes postmodern dance to feverish extremes, the American-born Forsythe leaps into a kind of fractured theatre in this revival of 2000’s Kammer/Kammer. The evening-long piece features multi-screen video projections of images occurring both onstage and off, walls kept in motion to continually reconfigure stage space, and recitals centred on texts by Anne Carson (a fantasia about Catherine Deneuve) and Douglas Martin (a playful recounting of being the gay boyfriend of a rock star). It’s kinetic, ironic, oblique and deeply engaging—echt Forsythe. Another barrier the choreographer wouldn’t accept: getting canned by the Ballet Frankfurt, the company he led for some 20 years and lofted to international eminence. These performances—part of the Holland Festival—represent the Netherlands premier of Forsythe’s new troupe. Long may it startle.

Amsterdam Roots Festival

14-21 June

This annual festival—this year’s the 11th—is a celebration of world musical culture and features more than 50 different concerts. The highpoint is the Roots Open Air on 15 June when Oosterpark is transformed into a collection of ‘villages’ for free performances. Six stages, 40 concerts and around 55,000 Amsterdammers from all walks of life come together to groove and eat. It can be regarded as a refresher course in all that is good in the world—and an event that is threatened with losing its subsidy (see p. 5). Volunteer-driven festivals like these serve to remind that when one puts different good things together one can often get, um, gooder things... Regardless, the term ‘globalisation’ may slowly become less about economic and political irregularities and more about embracing all its potential positives.

Established in 1981, Parkpop claims to be the biggest open-air festival in Europe—though that remains open to debate. It’s a family affair, so don’t expect too many cutting-edge bands here. Now and again, though, it does attract some pretty cool acts—even if it’s usually a big name from the past. (The Proclaimers, anyone?) One of the key attractions is the Parkpopmarkt, where you can buy anything from collector’s items to umbrellas. Despite the claimed capacities of hundreds of thousands, the festival is always gezellig, and, as a bonus, it gives you a chance to brush up on your Den Haag vernacular. And with Jamaican force Morgan Heritage on hand, you can’t go wrong: their roots reggae is the perfect soundtrack to a sunny day. And if it rains they’ll still cheer up your mood.

It hasn’t forgotten its roots though, and set in a picturesque fortress by the Danube, it’s far from average.

Begun in 2000, Folkwoods is one of the few Dutch festivals dedicated solely to folk music and its accompanying lore. But as folk encompasses many different styles, the organisers have decided to focus mainly on music with Celtic traits. A Campingflight to Lowlands Paradise

Hitting earlier than usual this year, Lowlands is traditionally the place to find the biggest discoveries alongside some monster contemporary rock acts.

Besides the impressively full roster of live performances, there’s enough theatre (both the usual and street variety), comedy, films, literature and art to keep you entertained 24 hours a day. Or else you can just aim for three days of hanging out in (hopefully) sunny weather with a relaxed, mixed crowd. While the organisers try hard to keep festivities civilised and clean, the accumulated throngs of sweating, excreting bodies sometimes cause Eastern Bloc-type lines for the toilets and showers, so plan accordingly.

Feeling boxed in Bringmefood.nl Bilderdijkstraat 202, 06 1162 8460 Open: Tue-Fri, 11.00-21.00; Sat-Sun, 14.00-22.00 Cash, Pin After a marathon of unhealthy eating, my protesting innards demanded a return to elegant simplicity: something from the Japanese kitchen, for example. To my delight and pleasure, I noticed what seemed like a new sushi takeaway and delivery service operating from a Bilderdijkstraat address where once a favourite broodjezaak of mine resided. (Yes, the ruthless Horeca business can be such a cruel mistress...)

I only had time to retrieve a takeaway/delivery sushi menu since I was about to meet friends across the road at Surinamese restaurant Riaz for one of their renowned rotis. But the sushi seed had already been planted.

And what luck! The very next day, a somewhat embarrassingly familiar terminal lethargy struck where I could not even make the effort to yawn, much less cook. As a big fat cuckoo sitting in his nest, I desperately needed to be stuffed.

But then, my conscience reminded me: I should stuff myself with light and healthful snacks.

My squinted eyes began studying the menu like a certain Dr Jones over an ancient map.

What was it to be? The menu offered a quintessential combat action team of different sushi choices: maki (the round sliced seaweedwrapped rice rolls with a filling in the centre), uramaki (those inside-out rolls where the rice is wrapped around the seaweed and filling, before being rolled in toasted sesame seeds), temaki

with salmon caviar, or seaweed salad, or a spicy tuna-salmon mixture). There were also eight different sushi box combinations of which I could have guzzled the lot—even the party special of

56 pieces for €40.

Instead I chose the more modest six-piece Osaka box (€4) and some salmon sashimi (€6).

As an afterthought, I also ordered a spicy tunafilled temaki hand roll (€3.50) since the prices seemed so reasonable—and the space in my belly so accommodating.

Upon phoning in my order, I was informed it would take 45 minutes to arrive. Time dragged on endlessly as Glutton fuzzed out before the box watching Jamie Oliver in action.

Finally the doorbell shrilled just when I had decided to build a Jamie voodoo dolly as part of a diabolic plan to pin it every time I heard the word ‘pucker’.

A young Japanese motor-manga hero charged up the stairs. His helmeted head and exoskeleton made of colourful leather made him look like a giant tasty lobster. (Yes, I was that hungry.)

Cash exchanged hands and the motorbike roared away as I tore open the bag. To my relief, everything looked recognisable. There were no weird ingredients like crispy insects or frog balls to freak out any prudish gastro-xenophobe.

I gleefully opened the transparent covering to my sushi and pickled ginger, squirted in the soy from the included sachets, mixed it with eyewatering green wasabi horseradish paste and dived in. What a pleasure it was to eat these edible sacraments to refined gluttony!

The pieces were obviously freshly made with the fish hardly smelling fishy. The sushi rice held firm, tasting slightly sweet-sour from the vinegar. The sweet mirin-flavoured Japanese omelette slice proved to be my favourite. But I enjoyed it all.

On the whole, it was a satisfying, healthy banquet. My choice for sushi overrides takeaway pizza or Kentucky Freud Chicken. Bring it on, bring me food.

DON’T YOU WANT A REAL ENDING? FILM Funny Games Opens Thursday at Pathé de Munt and Rialto.

Last week I had a friendly but heated argument with a friend about the original, 1997 Austrian version of Michael Haneke’s Funny Games. My friend said it was one of the most awful films he’d ever seen: sadistic, pedantic, manipulative and just plain nasty. He wasn’t the only one with this sentiment, he pointed out. He managed to stay

to the end, but plenty of people walked out of the screening. Some even took the trouble to go up to the actors who’d played the two antagonists (they were sitting at the front of the theatre) and express their thoughts on the movie: ‘Scheisse film!’

They would have fit perfectly into one of the two categories which Haneke himself divided the audience for his film. As he later said, after the screening in Cannes: ‘Anyone who leaves the cinema doesn’t need the film. Anyone who stays, does.’

Funny Games (in either version) is an extremely disquieting and violent movie—

although most of the violence occurs offscreen. But it’s also heavy with intriguing postmodern quandaries. It’s an in-yourface contemplation of the relationship between film, audience and violence, one that constantly plays with and thwarts your expectations for what—on the surface—looks like just another conventional family-in-peril thriller.

The original film fared badly in the US: subtitles and Americans usually don’t get along. And so, ten years later, Haneke deemed it time for an American version.

The story remains the same: Bourgeois couple Ann (Naomi Watts) and George (Tim Roth) travel with their son to their idyllic holiday home. Their trip turns into a nightmare when two immaculately dressed boys, Paul (Michael Pitt) and Peter (Brady Corbet), single them out as their next victims. At the beginning, they make a bet that the family will be dead within 12 hours. The family bet they will survive.

Those already familiar with the original shouldn’t expect any surprises. Indeed, this virtually shot-by-shot remake seems

rather superfluous. The only real differences come from the casting choices.

Naomi Watts is more obviously the stronger of the two parents—which rids the scene where Daddy stays behind with a blow-dryer while Mommy tries to get help of its emasculating potency. The two boys in the US version are also more visibly deranged, like younger versions of Jack Nicholson’s character in The Shining. You can easily imagine them torturing little animals when they were younger, whereas Arno Frisch’s Paul was much more disturbing in his ostensible normalcy.

Still, Haneke’s message has lost none of its urgency. In a time when film violence has become more and more graphic and characters are increasingly reduced to pieces of meat to be innovatively butchered, there is a need for confrontation. David Cronenberg did it more subtly in A History of Violence. Haneke takes the subversive route. He shows us what a film is: a construction, made for our amusement. Sometimes Paul addresses us—the audience—directly to enlist our opinion.

‘What do you think? Don’t you want a real ending, with plausible plot developments?’ asks Paul, when his accomplice mentions they could also kill the family in one go. In one of Haneke’s most infamous ‘cheats’, Paul actually rewinds the film to provide a more satisfactory outcome. But by having the perpetrators address us directly, Haneke takes away our own cloak of invisibility and inviolability. He confronts us with ourselves. We’re not innocent bystanders; we are all accomplices.

His approach may not be the most subtle, but it does pose an interesting question: Were those people who left my friend’s screening enraged because of the violence, or because they felt caught in the act?

New this week All the Boys Love Mandy Lane Aesthetically, this slasher flick is a cut above the rest, tapping such arty 1970s techniques as intense colour saturation. But the persistent, nagging suggestion of a shocking and

unexpected revelation that permeates the film unfortunately turns out to be just another ‘twist’ ending that produces less of a shriek and more of a groan. At least it takes the audience’s intelligence seriously throughout two-thirds of the film, but the third act lacks a sorely needed punch. Directed by Jonathan Levine, with Amber Heard as Mandy. Renee Zellweger (who’s made four period pictures since Chicago in 2002) gets some warmed-over Front Page stuff as a Chicago Tribune reporter who’s trying to expose as a fraud Clooney’s war-hero star player.

She and Clooney never strike sparks, leaving him with nothing at the climax but the amusing spectacle of a big, muddy game. With Jonathan Pryce. (JJ) 114 min.

Leatherheads George Clooney’s winning streak as a director screeches to a halt with this flat screwball comedy about the early days of pro football. As captain of the ragtag Duluth Bulldogs in 1925, Clooney looks way too old to be on the field, and having all the characters make jokes about his age doesn’t help.

in the lesser-known Crin-Blanc (‘White Mane’, 1953, 40 min.) a boy forges a bond with a proud wild stallion. Both films tell the same story—the balloon is coveted by neighbourhood bullies, the stallion by mercenary horse wranglers—and both end with a moment of transcendence, as the boy and his prized ‘friend’ escape the cruel world of grown-ups for the limitless unknown. (JJ) Filmmuseum, De Uitkijk Be Kind Rewind The sweet-tempered Michel Gondry works well with sharp-edged material (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), but his projects as a solo writer-director threaten to drift off into whimsy (The Science of Sleep and now this feature). Danny Glover entrusts his run-down video shop in New Jersey to clueless assistants Jack Black and Mos Def, who accidentally erase all the videos and decide to shoot their own low-rent versions of popular hits. Their project is a great success with customers, but the studios object and Glover gets an eviction notice. One wants to protect this mushy film, but it’s hard not to gag on the cuteness. With Melonie Diaz and Mia Farrow.

Kriterion, The Movies, Pathé ArenA, Pathé De Munt Cassandra’s Dream After making his best and smoothest drama (Match Point) in England, Woody Allen returns there for one of his most clueless and awkward, outfitted with a standard-issue Philip Glass score. In both cases Allen’s usual hang-ups about class and money lead to conventionally complicated murder plots. Two economically challenged cockney brothers in South London—a garage mechanic and compulsive gambler (Colin Farrell) and a more settled sort who runs the family restaurant (Ewan McGregor)—get pushed into killing a businessman who’s threatening to expose their rich uncle (Tom Wilkinson). (JR) 108 min. Pathé Tuschinski Dunya & Desie A reasonably entertaining parade of ethnic and class stereotypes, based on the TV series and directed by Dana Nechushtan (Nachtrit). With Eva van de Wijdeven as kaaskop teenager Desie and the award-winning Maryam Hassouni as her Moroccan best friend Dunya. In Dutch. 96 min. Cinema Amstelveen, Het Ketelhuis, Pathé ArenA, Pathé De Munt, Studio K La Graine et le mulet Sixty-year-old Slimane Beiji has just been fired from his dockworker’s job in Sète, in southern France. He has been living in a shabby hotel ever since his divorce, but does his very best to keep in touch with his children. At the same time, he is having an affair with his landlady and has grown fond of her daughter, Rym. It is Rym who helps him realise his last dream: to run a couscous restaurant. Tunisian-French director Abdel Kechiche wants to paint a complete family picture. He succeeds, but at a cost: estrangement from Beiji. It’s not until two hours in that we really begin to understand his pain and appreciate his friendship with Rym—just in time for a beautiful finale.

Happy-Go-Lucky Poppy (Sally Hawkins) teaches

kindergarten in North London, lives in a flatshare with her best friend and fellow teacher Zoe, goes clubbing on Friday nights, and is the kind of person who, in the words of Eric Idle, always looks on the bright side of life.

For example, she regards the fact that her bike has been stolen as motivation to improve her skills and decides to take driving lessons instead. That’s how she ends up meeting Scott (Eddie Marsan), who’s basically her opposite. Not much happens in Mike Leigh’s latest film, but Hawkins’s Poppy is one of the great characters of the current cinematic year. (MB) Cinecenter, Kriterion, The Movies, Pathé Tuschinski

I’m Not There Todd Haynes’s ambitious and daring new film is a biopic in the sense that it depicts the main events in Bob Dylan’s life and career. But they are not told in chronological order, and Haynes uses six different actors to play the singer. The different performers (including Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale and the black actor Marcus Carl Franklin) and the constant moving back and forth in time don’t make it easy to identify with any of the Dylans. But simple identification is probably not what Haynes is after. His film is not about Dylan himself, but about the mythmaking around a pop star. I’m Not There has its moments, but in the end it’s more an interesting audiovisual lecture than an overwhelming cinematographic experience. (MM) 135 min. Studio K Import Export Austrian despair monger Ulrich Seidl cuts between two tales of young adults sinking deeper into poverty. The ‘import’ is a tenderhearted Ukrainian nurse (Ekateryna Rak) who arrives in Vienna looking for decently paid work but winds up cleaning a geriatric ward. The ‘export’ is a Viennese youth (Paul Hofmann) who suffers various indignities while accompanying his filthy-minded stepfather on a trip to install vending machines in the Ukraine. Seidl’s drab long shots have a narcotic pull that keeps this absorbing throughout its 135 minutes, but the final image—a bedridden crone mindlessly chirping, ‘Death! Death!

Death!’—is typical of the movie’s knee-jerk grimness.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Indiana Jones has aged 20 years, from the 1930s to the 1950s, and in the Spielberg/Lucas universe this means hot rod cars and Triumph bikes, bland college McCarthyism, nasty Soviet comrades, the atomic scare and, yes, UFOs. The period shift works pretty well, and gives the film-makers a new palette of elements in which to play with their old character. Professor Jones has aged gracefully, and so has Harrison Ford, joined here by his original Raiders co-star Karen Allen (still Indy’s ex-girlfriend) and newcomer Shia LaBeouf. As in Raiders, there are countless movie quotations to keep the film buffs busy; and overall Indy 4 manages to temporarily recreate that nostalgic sense of wonder that’s been painfully lacking in recent cinema. No Country for Old Men The Coen Brothers’ latest

Into

the Wild Moving, if somewhat overlong, account of the life of Christopher McCandless, with a bravura performance from Emile Hirsch. At the age of 22, McCandless left his wealthy, dysfunctional family, gave his college cash to Oxfam and took off into the breathtaking beauty of the American wilderness. What starts as a run-of-the-mill road movie twists into an American Odyssey as, after two years away from it all, McCandless meets an untimely death in the wilds of Alaska. The usual Characters Met Along the Way include Catherine Keener, Vince Vaughn and Hal Holbrook. McCandless won’t stick with any of them, and gradually begins to unravel in his determined solitude.

The film becomes a meditation on the human need for human company, framed against some of the most glorious scenery the world has to offer. A triumph for Sean Penn as a director, backed by a custom soundtrack from Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder. (AD) 140 min. Cinecenter, The Movies, Pathé Tuschinski Iron Man Another Marvel icon gets the big screen treatment, but director Jon Favreau makes his share of lousy choices in his uneven take on the superhero CEO Tony Stark. Lucky for him, he has Robert Downey Jr, who singlehandedly saves the film with his portrayal of Stark as a boozing, slightly amoral, womanising rogue. Jeff Bridges tries to steal the spotlight by overacting in a very un-dudelike way, but the rest of the cast (Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard) accept their status as supporting players to the Robert Downey Jr Experience. Juno Juno (Ellen Page) is 16. Juno is full of life and

sarcasm. Juno is pregnant. Oops. She gives up the thought of abortion after hearing that her baby has already developed fingernails and instead starts looking for adoptive parents. She finds the perfect couple in Mark and Vanessa. They’re wealthy, nice and Mark might even qualify as cool, since he shares Juno’s taste in music and splatter movies. Ellen Page is beyond perfect as the wisecracking but friendly Juno, who’s bright, yet young and naïve enough to think that there is no harm in spending time with the adoptive father of her unborn child. Add a solid script and a great soundtrack and there you have it: this year’s independent American masterpiece. Directed by Jason Reitman. (MP) 92 min. Het Ketelhuis Lars and the Real Girl An awkward young man in a small Minnesota town (Ryan Gosling) invites his older brother (goofy Paul Schneider) and sister-in-law (Emily Mortimer) to meet his new fiancée, but to their horror and embarrassment she turns out to be made of rubber. The local psychiatrist advises them to play along with his delusion, and eventually the close-knit religious community, moved by concern for the brothers, joins in. I’m not sure there’s still that much compassion in the world, but in keeping with the spirit of the movie, I was willing to pretend. Craig Gillespie directed a script by Six Feet Under writer Nancy Oliver.

Het Ketelhuis De Muze A young poet with writer’s block (Matthias Schoenaerts) goes to an Antonioni movie and falls in love with the director’s ‘muse’, Monica Vitti. Wandering through the city at night, he meets a woman (Tara Elders) with a remarkable resemblance to the Italian actress. Still, her presence doesn’t seem to be helping his poetry. This new film by Ben van Lieshout has no

brings Cormac McCarthy’s novel to the big screen, and it’s a shock to the system, simultaneously elegiac and terrifyingly violent. A subversion of the classic lawmen-chase-outlaw genre, the film is shot like a cross between a Western and a horror flick. A Texan named Llewellyn Moss (Josh Brolin) takes off with millions in cash he’s found at the site of a drug deal gone wrong.

The Coens give us none of the usual male-bonding, hunter-and-hunted nonsense: Chigurh, Bell and Moss are entirely alone, each in his own way, particularly Moss as the slaughter inevitably catches up with him. adopted son Simon return to the orphanage she grew up in to turn it into a home for mentally handicapped children. When Simon starts befriending invisible children and later disappears, she is forced to confront her own trauma and maternal fears as well as the dark history of the place. Another of the highly atmospheric gothic horror films that are rapidly becoming a staple of the Spanish cinematic output, El Orfanato is a wellcrafted suspense tale that is light on the blood and guts, but will still fill you with a feeling of ominous dread. Paris This Altmanesque tale, written and directed

by Cédric Klapisch (Chacun cherche son chat), is centred around a male dancer (Romain Duris) who needs a heart transplant and has to come to terms with his fear of death. But he’s the least interesting of the characters who drop by in this interwoven, matter-of-fact assortment of stories—one that, among other things, attempts to elevate ordinary street market workers to sex gods capable of reeling in the supermodels. The dreaded French cliché pops up time and time again, but a fairly uninteresting main character is about all that plagues this appealing Parisian slice of life. Juliette Binoche leads an excellent ensemble cast. In French with Dutch subtitles. (LvH) 130 min. Pathé Tuschinski, De Uitkijk Persepolis A satisfying adaptation of the autobio-

graphical graphic novel about a girl coming of age in Iran during the Islamic revolution in the 1970s, struggling with everything from tight headscarves to bomb threats. In a cute and comical hand-drawn style, the book’s writer and illustrator, Marjane Satrapi, and her co-director, Vincent Paronnaud, draw parallels between a girl’s passage from innocence to puberty and the violent transition of a civilised country into a fundamentalist state. Even a denunciation from the Iranian government couldn’t stop the screening of this irresistible and intelligent charm offensive. Peur(s) du noir A French animation project about

fear of the dark. Graphic designer Etienne Robial asked six cartoonists and illustrators to go deep into their anxiety closet. The result: six scary shorts in black-and-white. One highlight is Lorenzo Mattotti’s little fairy tale about a dusty Mediterranean village that is suddenly haunted by an unidentified monster.

Mattotti draws a desolate, De Chirico-esque seaside town and really makes you feel its burning sun and devastating loneliness. Another is Marie Caillou contribution, about a Japanese schoolgirl being bullied by her classmates. Caillou’s naïve, anime-influenced visual style combines with hardcore cruelty to yield disturbing results. In French with Dutch subtitles.

Melkweg Cinema Speed Racer The original animated series started the Japanimation craze that still captures the imagination of our feeble Western minds, but even if you aren’t a big fan of Anime, there’s a lot to love about this rollicking roller coaster of a live-action remake. Young rally driver Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch of Into the Wild) dukes it out with a sinister CEO, with a little help from the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox), who may or may not be his older brother. The story isn’t anything to write home about, but a stellar cast and the trademark Wachowski visual flair combine to deliver a film that actually is family-friendly fun. With Susan Sarandon, John Goodman and Christina Ricci. (LvH) Pathé De Munt Tricks A Polish coming-of-age comedy directed by Andrzej Jakimowski. In Polish with Dutch subtitles. 95 min. 20 stunt but a way to dismiss controversy regarding the film’s main theme: brutal police violence on the streets of Rio. The Elite Squad of the title claim to be the world’s most effective urban warriors, and their fascistic methods are portrayed in extremely realistic terms. The film’s high-octane action and right-wing morals make it feel like a Hollywood cop thriller with a samba soundtrack. It’s no surprise that Tropa director José Padilha is now attached to an action movie at Warner Bros, appropriately titled A Willing Patriot. In Portuguese with Dutch subtitles. (MB) 118 min. Cinecenter, Kriterion, Pathé Tuschinski Le Voyage du Ballon Rouge Chinese master HsiaoHsien Hou (Café Lumière, Three Times) has based his first French-language feature loosely on Albert Lamorisse’s 1956 classic Le Ballon rouge. Here the balloon and the story follow young Chinese film-maker Song (Song Fang), who moonlights as a nanny in the house of Suzanne, an edgy, emotionally unstable voice actress (Juliette Binoche in another brilliant, subtle role). Song bonds with Suzanne’s son, but still there’s something missing, symbolised by the presence of the self-willed red balloon, which peeks through windows and peeps around corners. The Movies, Rialto Waitress The late Adrienne Shelly, best known for her roles in Sleep With Me and Hal Hartley’s Trust and The Unbelievable Truth, wrote and directed this tangy, resourceful comedy-drama. Keri Russell plays a gifted pie baker and abused wife who waits tables at a diner along with two romantically frustrated coworkers (Cheryl Hines and Shelly) and unexpectedly finds herself pregnant. The film isn’t averse to reaching for Hollywood fantasies, but there’s a lot of what seems to be hard-earned wisdom here about women in bad marriages. (JR) 104 min. Het Ketelhuis

You, the Living A brutally deadpan comedy by

Swedish director Roy Andersson, who seems to have translated the entire range of human misery into a loosely connected series of slapstick gags. His black humor is impressively layered, each layer darker than the last: when a joker at a family banquet insists on performing that old parlour trick of yanking the tablecloth out from under the dishes, he not only shatters a huge collection of crystal and china but also reveals—look sharp or you’ll miss it—a vintage dining table inlaid with swastikas. Andersson’s building block is a static long shot so solidly composed it suggests a panel in a comic strip; the central figure is often encased in his own suffering, and sometimes additional laughs come from a background figure surveying his despair in open-mouthed bewilderment. Special screenings Belle de Jour Though it may not equal the sublimity of his last three features, Luis Buñuel’s 1967 masterpiece remains a seminal work that clarifies his relationship with Hitchcock. Like Hitchcock, Buñuel was a prude with a strong religious background and a highly developed sense of the kinky and transgressive; what he does here with Catherine Deneuve parallels Hitchcock’s encounters with Tippi Hedren.

The film recounts the story of a frigid but devoted upper-class housewife (Deneuve) who secretly works at a high-class brothel to satisfy her masochistic impulses. Placing her fantasies, dreams and recollections on the same plane as her everyday adventures, Buñuel comes closer to the French New Wave than he did before or after. In French with Dutch subtitles. Filmmuseum Cet Obscur Objet du Désir Luis Buñuel explores the problematic relationship between lover and beloved as an aging aristocrat (Fernando Rey) yearns after an unattainable young woman, Conchita—who, since she is played by two different actresses, is both more and less than a standard movie character. Constantly changing, she is unknowable, complicated, perverse, but she is also an eternal erotic principle.

Buñuel draws his paradoxes—is it love or sex, sadism or masochism, life or death?—with a perfectly clear, perfectly impregnable style. The old surrealist created another masterpiece in this 1977 feature, his final film. In French with Dutch subtitles.

Filmmuseum Cinemania This 2001 American-German documentary isn’t very popular among ‘normal’ cinephiles (if such a term isn’t already an oxymoron) because it exhibits five of the most legendarily extreme and dysfunctional cinemaniacs in Manhattan. Roberta Hill, who saves ticket stubs and flyers, was banned from one of her haunts after assaulting an usher who tore her ticket in half, while Harvey Schwartz, who lives with his mother in the Bronx, memorises the precise running times of everything he sees. The film-makers aren’t exactly cruel, but they focus on compulsion rather than the passion. Showing as part of Cavia’s 25th-anniversary celebration; see Short List. (JR) 80 min. Cavia La Fille Sur le Pont A knife thrower finds a new assistant when he meets a woman about to throw herself into the Seine in this self-parodying art film (1999). The deliberately obvious equating of knife

throwing with sex would be funnier if it weren’t so serious, and the undercut eroticism is part of what makes the movie themeless; a merely conceptual exercise.

De Nieuwe Anita Goodbye Lenin! A true-blue socialist in East Germany has a heart attack and slips into a coma, leaving behind two grown children. When she regains consciousness six months later, the Berlin Wall has fallen, a fact her son (Daniel Brühl) tries to conceal from her to prevent a lethal shock to her system. German writerdirector Wolfgang Becker creates an intriguing story of a family traumatised by politics, then lets it drift off into an elaborate sitcom-style hoax. In German with Dutch subtitles. Filmhuis Griffioen Made of Honour Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan make an agreeable pair in this above-average comedy, another go-round for the reliable premise of longtime pals awakening to each other romantically.

He’s a rich, bed-hopping Manhattanite, she’s unsuccessful in love, and when she finally nabs an engagement from a handsome, titled Scotsman (Kevin McKidd), Dempsey gamely agrees to serve as maid of honour at their wedding in the Highlands.

Many rich topics—the homoeroticism of ’80s hair bands, Tipper Gore’s campaign against satanic lyrics, metal-stoked church burnings in Norway—are considered and then dropped in this 2005 documentary. But would you respect a movie about metal that wasn’t excessive? Codirected by Scot McFadyen and Jessica Joy Wise; with Tony Iommi, Lemmy Kilmister, Ronnie James Dio, Alice Cooper, Dee Snider and DePaul University sociologist Deena Weinstein. (JJ) 94 min.

Rialto Viridiana Luis Buñuel returned to his native Spain to create this 1961 masterpiece, which marked his rebirth as a film-maker of international repute. Mexican star Silvia Pinal plays the title character, a girl about to enter a convent whose confident plans for sainthood are interrupted by her uncle’s (false) announcement that he has raped her in her sleep.

She forges ahead anyway, filling her uncle’s estate with beggars and madmen in an obsessive demonstration of Christian charity. In Spanish with Dutch subtitles. (DK) 89 min.
