t h g i l t Spo on: This graphic novel is a maniacal representation of not only what it’s like to have a cat, but what it’s like to be a cat. Many a person, both pro-cat and anti-cat, have wished to see into the minds of cats and understand the motivations behind the weird things they do. The Oatmeal, creator of How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You, as well as many other hilarious comics, grants that wish in the most ingenious of ways. Cat person or not, reading this graphic novel is sure to bring about many nods, grins, and chuckles. With the nearing release of MCU’s Captain Marvel into theaters, reading this graphic novel is simply a fun way to get to know Captain Marvel and her style as a superhero just a little bit better. Instead of delving into origin stories though, Captain Marvel: Higher, Further, Faster, More is less intimidating in that it tells an epic story of adventure with Captain Marvel already well established as the superhero that she is. A classic tale of standing up for the little guy, Captain Marvel comes to the aid of a bereft people and sticks around to see that their liberation is fully realized. Highly renowned and reviewed by many a Batman fan, Hush delivers a great and classic Batman mystery to be solved, and more. In this graphic novel, Batman must detect the source behind a great conspiracy, one that seems to elude him for far longer than he can abide. This work of art also offers up plenty of romance, comedy, and tragedy to really round things out. If one is looking for a collection of Batman thrills that also guest stars many of his time-honored enemies, as well as a few of his go-to allies, Hush is definitely where it’s at.

by Claudia Gorse Follow Noragami as he struggles to answer the age-old question of, “What is my place in the world?” Noragami is about a homeless god that nobody really knows exists, and his determination to change that at any cost, even as little as 5 yen. This manga is great one to read if one is interested in following the antics of a sweatsuit clad god that has deemed himself the ultimate problem-solver for hire. With one simple goal in mind, Noragami just wants to become a household name that is adored by the masses, that’s all, really. Nidhi Chanani has created a wonderful, deceptively complex, and yet highly relatable graphic novel here. Pashmina addresses different subjects and questions from the point of view of Priyanka, a young Indian teenager living in America with her mom. The style of artwork is captivating, with the creator using stark contrast between black & white and vibrant colors to illustrate differences between real world scenarios and dream world scenarios. Follow Priyanka on a quest to uncover the mystery of the magical pashmina, all while connecting with the past and embracing the future.

Art in the Library by Ann May

The John F. Moss Library is currently hosting an art show titled “Integration”, featuring local artist Krysten Haynes. Krysten was born in Texarkana and enjoyed creating art when she was younger. About a year ago she started painting again and has had a few small viewings of her artwork. This exhibit is her largest and includes about 43 paintings. Most of Krysten’s works are abstracts that are painted with acrylics and mixed media, although some are done in alcohol ink and digital painting. She particularly likes using metallic acrylics. Her paintings have vibrant colors, many with blue, turquoise, violet, and rose. She especially loves Starseed using gold in many Mixed Media of her works. Krysten enjoys using texture which she creates by gluing fabric on the canvas, then hardening and painting it, giving the piece a three-dimensional look. Examples of this artwork are seen in the paintings “This and That,” “Eclectic Waves,” and “Luna.” Since she admires Salvador Dali’s work, Krysten employs swirls and circles in some of her paintings, as seen in “Walking on Water,” “Cosmos,” and “Venice Beach.” Several of her paintings (including “Star Seed” and “Aspects of Self”) focus on women’s faces. One large painting titled “BB” depicts B.B. King playing his guitar Eclectic Waves with metallic gold Mixed Media spotlights flooding him with light. Krysten says that she enjoys watching people’s reactions to her paintings. The effect her art has on others excites and motivates her. This unique and visually appealing collection of artwork will be on display until February 28th. Most of the paintings are for sale.

BB King Mixed Media

The next art show will begin March 19th, featuring the works of Johnnie Terry.
