– Alabama Shakes
In my conversations with artists for my podcast SOUND & VISION, music is more o!en than not a topic of discussion and it comes to no surprise that the bulk of artists I speak to have had music play a major role in their life both as either active performers or avid listeners. I have o!en said that music is an incredible parallel axis to artmaking in describing and understanding the creative process. They bothhave their idiosyncrasies, but they share much in the process.

Édouard Manet, The Guitar Player, 1866
For this group exhibition, I selected artists who have diverse ways of working with imagery. Some have worked with images that relate to music, some have songs and music as a key element in the conceptual underpinnings of their work and some I wanted to offer the challenge of incorporating the idea of sound into the work they made just for this show. I was interested in the idea of sound being represented specifically in the visual plane. How artists grapple with picturing sound and its relationship to images. How artists can use the element of sound to heighten the dynamics of an image.

Mary Cassa#, The Banjo Lesson, 1894
In the history of art there have been so many wonderful examples of this merger. From Manet’s The Guitar Player, to Mary Cassa#’s The Banjo Lesson, music has always been an artist’s muse. I am hoping to bring together a compelling group of artists working today who bring fresh and intriguing ideas of how sound and vision can merge. — Brian Alfred November 2020
