Check off the native Kansas plants in your garden!
Native plants have evolved alongside native wildlife and offer the most useful habitat — food & shelter — in addition to great beauty. Our prairie natives require less water and are adapted to grow in local conditions so they do well without requiring extensive resources and chemicals.
We grow many plants native to the midwest as well as other regions of the lower 48 states. The native plants in this publication list those which are native to Kansas.
In addition to growing native plants, we also offer “nativars” selected for urban garden-appropriate habit while maintaining their environmental value and low-maintenance adaptability. Our feeling is that it’s better to grow a native plant that has been selected and grown as a genetically identical clone of the parent to fit smaller-sized space or lower height for traffic visibility when necessary than to grow an entirely non-native plant. Moreover, some plants have been genetically improved to provide more abundant flowers, longer flowering time, and higher value pollen (see Mt. Cuba Center research).
Plant native plants when possible. A good goal is to plant three native plants for every non-native one.
NOTE: While the term “nativar” can be used to label native plants that have been hybridized by plant breeders, we do not include them in this group. For our purposes we identify and label straight native plants separately from nativars to distinguish those native selections which are naturally occurring. All other plants are grouped together as hybrids or non-native plants and are not included in this list.
