BARBERESS Lisa McBean
LISA MCBEAN TALKS ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE AS A HAIRDRESSER, STYLIST AND BARBER AND HER TIME AS THE LEADING LADY OF CONNERYS. How did you begin your career as a hairdresser/ barber? Basically I had spent years styling other peoples hair not even realising that I wanted to go into that sort of career and it was actually my dad who suggested I should try haridressing. I di d a part time course and then did an apprenticeship with Saks which taught me a lot and since then I have done a variation of haridressing and barbering.
What made you choose to work here? Well when Lee approached me about coming to work for his new Barbers I pretty much said yes straight away! His ideas and theme for the shop caught my eye as I am a lover of all things vintage.
What do you enjoy most about working at Connery’s? I would say the social aspect as well the actual barbering side of things . The whole place is so welcoming and homely and every customers feed back is similar. They enjoy the company and the conversation as well a very good haricut!
Most hairdressers tend to stick to styling women’s hair, what made you want to carry on barbering? Well the whole time I have been a haridresser I have only done quite basic mens hair so when Lee decided to open up this shop it was something I really wanted to take forward anyway because I wanted to get more into the barbering side and learn the technical skills. It is actually more interesting than people think.
What is the hardest sort of hair style you have had to to tackle? I would’nt say a haristyle but hair wise it is generally men with fine hair who want a particulat style because you have to be quite diplomatic about telling them its just too difficult! Beard wise I would say people with vey thick stubborn hair that just ends up all over the place!
Are there any hairstyles you have done where you have impressed yourself by doing them? Ocassionally yes when someone walks out of the door and I sort of think to myself yes I did really well and usually surprise myself especially when someone has very difficult hair to manage!
Whats next for Connery’s Barbershop? Well recently we have looked into developing our own range of products in store and by using products of all different types we can find the best textures and holds suitable for the ones sold in store so I would say that is our next big step! We feel it is important to not rush into anything!
