The Ganlan Style (pile- dwelling) architecture is characteristic of a national minority in the Southern part of China. These pile-dwelling structures are especially built along the river’s edge. How did these structures become prevalent miles away in the island of Taiwan? In the1950’s, the defeated Taiwanese National Government retreated. As a result there was great urgency to provide housing for the returning army- the army decided to build hundreds of emergency houses at the river side in the Ganlan Style. Once the village plan was completed, the residents sold these dwellings to immigrants who work in Taichung. Currently there is great debate considering safety and urban regulation concerns- the government wants to demolish the structures to leave way for newer developments. Within the nearby Taichung TADA Center (Taiwan Architecture and Art Center). This bird sanctuary can attract orniconithologists (people who enjoy bird watching) and people who appreciate historical structures and the life of the community. However, the more people that come to visit, the more possibility that will scare away the fauna. In my design, I located the entries to the site in the streets within the alley. A wooden parapet is placed strategically to decrease the noise pollution from visitors who come to the site. At the main bird watching spot there are various plants and bushes that permit the animal to feel safe without interruptions from the visitors.

The Taichung Sugar factory was built in 1912 by the Japanese government. In 1945 the Sugar Factory was taken by the Taiwanese government, and renamed as “Taichung Sugar Factory”. It stopped the production of sugar after 40 years of operation. All major structures were demolished in 2000 except a one storey administrative building. The Taichung Sugar factory Working bureau was kept for the entertainment purposes as a theme restaurant in the future. However, with the postponement of the Chung_ Hwa urban plan, the old Japanese style architecture has been left in a derelict state. The site is one of the few green spaces near the Taichung Train Station area- a densely developed area with malls and a principal urban transportation hub for Taichung City. There is great potential for the urban green belts to link to the site and connect to the various users from the surrounding areas.

Back in the day, the site was used as a military supply storage location. Recently it has been redesigned as a parking space which is used during the weekends as an open music venue for the community and the weekend hikers. Additionally there are some smaller community gathering spaceswithin the large open space, which are used to hold events for Da- Kun as well. The renowned “921 Earthquake Memorial Center” is between the Da- kun parking space and the Dakun mountain. A series of bridges will be constructed in order to connect the various venues as a network of Da-Kun urban spaces. My role is to create a gateway for this network of community spaces.

This project proposes to create a landform that leads people to descend towards the visitor center. This sculpted topography also improves the acoustic quality. Moreover, the lower site also create a natural reservoir when it rains.

SECTIONS

The front garden provides protection from outside noise, and to create a path with the original ora from the site. By using the lights in the ground, the continuous straight lights will keep the site light up and lead the visitors to the visitor center and the back side music theater.

The bridge will connect the spots from the visitor center to the back side of the music theater, where visitors will enjoy the best views of the Da- Kun mountain.

SITE PLAN.

The world's population continues to grow, resulting in a steady migration from rural to urban areas.
