Free People

For my window rendering I chose to use a 3/32 scale. I was inspired a lot by looking at pins for Free People on Pinterest, both their fashion trends and window displays. It helped me a lot to get a good idea of their image, which is a very nature inspired, trendy bohemian lifestyle. I knew I wanted to do a fall fashion window so I was also very inspired by the colors of fall as the leaves change color. I thought that incorporating these colors somehow would tie in the nature inspired image that Free People aims to produce. The design on the window itself surrounding the mannequins creating a masking effect is a creative interpretation of the fall leaves changing color. I felt that designing them in a more abstract leaf way rather than just leaves themselves seemed to go more with the image, and also I thought the leaves had a more spring-like appearance. I chose to have wood floors because most of the pictures I’ve seen online have shown the stores having wood floors, and I think this is a good choice because it goes with their fashionable nature look well. I put the logo prominently on the back wall in black to contrast and make it stand out so it is especially visible to those glancing as they walk past. I ended up choosing to paint the walls a light cream color because I felt that the leaves on the windows and the merchandise provided enough color and adding a color behind them would wash some items or details out. For my mannequins I chose one standing and one sitting because I felt that they compositionally went well together in such a small space and were framed well by the surrounding design that way. I gave the mannequins fabric covered deer heads because I felt it went well with the nature theme and also I felt that the sweater fabric and deer heads tied in with the fall trends. I chose two outfits that I thought complemented one another and also looked as though they were going to the same place. The outfits I chose have highlights of color from the leaves surrounding them to tie into the fall color scheme. I placed the sitting mannequin on a short rustic wood ladder because it allowed me to display some of their home items on it, as well as give an interesting way to display the sitting mannequin in more of an environment setting on a ladder surrounded by leaves. I decided to wrap the poles of the ladder in different colored yarn to add a pop of color and creativity to a ladder that I felt otherwise blended into its surroundings.

I am choosing to partner up with creative pitch and donate any extra art supplies from the window installation to their organization. Creative Pitch is a non-profit organization that supplies art teachers, therapists and other artist professionals in need with art supplies of all kinds that would otherwise go to waste. The small ladder I’m going to donate to the Salvation Army Chicago. This well known organization takes donated clothing, furniture, home goods, and many other miscellaneous items and sells them at very reasonable prices helping those in need.
