Tips on How to Write the First and Second Drafts of Your Novel

     

Some writers plan and others don't Some know exactly what will happen Some know the ending without knowing how the characters will reach it Some start with a situation Some set characters with very little idea of where the story might take them.

Any of these methods is fine, as long as if you at least know the ending and a couple of major crises that will happen along the way.

Always carry a notebook or a voice recorder so that you can record your ideas.  Schedule at least two hours of uninterrupted hours for each writing session.  Write every idea that pops out of your mind (good or bad, it doesn’t matter right now). 

Try your very best to come up with at least 500 words every writing session. ď‚ž Have word document open where you can quickly note down ideas for future scenes that occur to you while you are writing. ď‚ž

If you are completely stuck, introduce a crisis and see how your characters react. ď‚ž Something that is completely random like a Martian landing is fine. It's ok, you can adapt or eliminate it later. ď‚ž

For most writers, writing the second draft means leaving the book for several weeks, then coming back to it and rewriting the whole thing. http://amyharrop.com/

Writing the second draft is much easier than writing the first.  In the second drafts, you will probably keep a lot of scenes 

› tighten up the pacing › change the order of events

› cut out some incidents › remove minor characters that turned out not to be
