BERNE, INDIANA
A CHARMING SWISS COMMUNITY
A close-knit
community with strong ties to its heritage, Berne was first settled in the mid-1850s by a group of Mennonite families from Switzerland, as well as a few pioneers who had migrated from eastern states. Area farmers convinced the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad to bring its railway line through the settlement in December 1871, and in 1872, the town of Berne was officially established. Reflective of its origins, Berne remains a deeply religious community. The city is home to at least 17 church congregations, more than adequately serving a population of just under 4,000. First Mennonite Church, established in 1852, stands at the crossroads of two busy highways – U.S. 27 and State Road 218 – and features the largest Mennonite church sanctuary in North America. Across the street, Berne’s Muensterberg Plaza and Clock Tower were recently constructed to help foster “an abiding legacy of the faith of...ancestors.” The clock tower resembles the same structure located in Bern, Switzerland, but those designing the tower in Berne, Indiana, included special inscriptions on each side of the structure. These words – Faith, Courage, Freedom, Opportunity, Perseverance, Hard Work, Hope, and Vision –

were chosen to reflect the values of Berne’s early settlers and are intended to be passed on to the city’s future generations. A leisurely drive outside the city in any direction reveals another group of deeply religious inhabitants – the Old Order Amish community. In fact, Adams County’s population of Old Order Amish now ranks third among other counties across the nation, when comparing the Amish population to the total number of inhabitants. Approximately 6,343 Amish reside in Adams County – most of these, in the outskirts of Berne and Geneva. Berne’s mayor and clerk-treasurer handle the city government’s dayto-day operations, while its legislative body -- a five member council -- meets twice monthly to discuss and act on ordinances, orders, and resolutions. Berne’s Board of Public Works & Safety includes oversight of local law enforcement and fire protection, as well as city streets, sanitation, transportation, sewers and utilities. The city’s nine member plan commission focuses on future development of the city. Berne industries include furniture and automotive parts manufacturing, production of automated assembly equipment, printing, publishing and more. Known as “the furniture capital of Indiana,” Berne’s retail offerings include five furniture stores. Many local non-profit entities, such as the Berne Public Library, South Adams Senior Center, Berne Chamber of Commerce, Boys & Girls Club and Swiss Village Retirement Community, enhance the daily lives of Berne’s residents. South Adams Schools, a single k-12 campus located on Berne’s south side, offers vocational training in auto mechanics and machine trades programs at the high school level. With an approximate enrollment of 1,350, South Adams Schools strives for educational excellence, offers a wide variety of extra-curricular and athletic activities, and takes pride in its student-led community service and humanitarian efforts. Berne tourist attractions include Pine Lake Waterpark and Swiss Heritage Village & Museum, as well as the Muensterberg Plaza & Clock Tower. Tours are also available at Cross Community Church, First Mennonite Church, and Hitzer Stove Inc. Popular annual events include the Swiss Days festival, held the last weekend in July, and the Weihnachtsfest, which celebrates the opening of the Christmas season the weekend following Thanksgiving.

D ECATUR, INDIANA CITY WITH SMALLTOWN CHARACTER
Named for
the U.S. naval hero, Stephen Decatur, the City of Decatur, Indiana, was founded in 1836 by Samuel L. Rugg. A black marble monument sits on the front lawn of Decatur’s Chamber of Commerce to commemorate Rugg, the man who, according to a city proclamation, “spent hundreds of dollars of his money, causing great personal financial difficulty” to bring a road through the city to connect St. Marys, Ohio, to Fort Wayne, Indiana. The City of Decatur was incorporated in 1853 and was designated the seat of Adams County. In 1873, the county’s impressive brick courthouse was erected – a Victorian structure now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The Adams County Courthouse still functions as the headquarters for several county government offices. A tributary of the Maumee River, the St. Marys River extends from Fort Wayne before winding through downtown Decatur on its way east to Ohio. The Kekionga Festival, held in August, takes place on the banks of

It is extremely important that we let people who are interested in living or working in Adams County know what is available and happening in our community. the St. Marys. The annual event features a pioneer encampment and living history village, along with an old-fashioned praise and worship church service, the popular Taste of Decatur restaurant sampler, and downtown sidewalk sales. The Decatur Chamber of Commerce also hosts an annual business expo in March, the Motor Sports Festival in June, and a Callithumpian Festival in October. Decatur’s Callithumpian Festival features the largest Halloween parade in the Midwest. With an area of nearly five square miles, Decatur’s population is just over 9,400. The city is home to the county’s only hospital – Adams Memorial – which was established more than 90 years ago. Today, the Adams Health Network includes a continuing care retirement community, an assisted living facility, and a cooperative of local and visiting physicians and specialsts from nearby Fort Wayne. Industry in Decatur ranges from food production and packaging to manufacturing of recreational vehicles, including RVs, motorhomes and powerboats. Bunge North America’s Decatur plant has been in operation since 1818, processing soybeans and manufacturing products such as bulk and bottled vegetable oil, shortening, lecitin, and meal for animal feeds. North Adams Community Schools, serving Decatur and the northern part of Adams County, provide a variety of programs and services, including a comprehensive PreK – 12 program for highability students that offers content acceleration and enrichment, Advanced Placement courses in all core content areas, and multiple opportunities for students to obtain dual high school/college credit prior to graduating. A variety of technical-vocational opportunities are available to high school students, including certification in Project Lead the Way, and Pathways to Engineering. Decatur attractions include Elephant Rock (a memorial to Indiana author Gene Stratton-Porter), Decatur Greenway, Adams County Historical Museum, and the Decatur Sculpture Walk. Established in 2012, the Sculpture Walk features a year-round outdoor/indoor art exhibit with up to 16 sculptures situated in downtown Decatur. Sculptures are on loan to the public and may be purchased from the artists. Decatur is a beautiful, historic city with friendly Hoosier people. With a pleasant mix of newer homes, well-maintained older homes, tree-lined streets and gardens, it’s a great place to live, work and raise a family!

G ENEVA, INDIANA FIRST BIRD TOWN OF INDIANA
Designated a
Bird Town of Indiana by the Indiana Audobon Society in September 2013, Geneva is proud to be the first community in the state to receive this designation in recognition of its commitment to the protection and conservation of bird populations and habitat. Following the example of famed author and one-time resident Gene StrattonPorter, the Town of Geneva and many of its residents have actively worked to restore and preserve acres of wetlands in the area. The community features a 106acre bird sanctuary and the 112-acre Wabash River Rainbow Bend Park. In 2012, a new visitor’s center opened near Stratton-Porter’s log cabin at the Limberlost State HIstoric Site. The addition of a classroom, exhibit space and public restrooms have allowed the site to better accommodate individual visitors and groups alike. Other area attractions include Golf Club of the Limberlost and Amishville, U.S.A. Home to approximately 1,380 residents, Geneva’s downtown was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Geneva also has a small industrial base, with one of Red Gold’s largest tomato processing facilities located at the south end of town. A significant portion of Adams County’s Old Order Amish population resides in rural Geneva, as well.

Although it became a stop on the railroad that connected Fort Wayne to Richmond, the town was not incorporated until 1906. By that time, what is now “downtown” was in place, as were many homes – several constructed from the tile block that was being manufactured in the southwest portion of the town.

Today, Adams Central is annually ranked as one of the top ten academic schools in Indiana and regularly enjoys athletic successes, including state championships in football, baseball, and wrestling, as well as a number of academic competitions. Local industries include semi-trailer and specialty wood products manufacturing. Monroe is also home to Zurcher’s BestOne Tire & Auto Care, the largest independent tire dealer in the U.S. The Adams County 4-H Fairgrounds are located in Monroe. The Monroe Youth League offers teeball, baseball and softball programs at Don Ray Memorial Park. The park features four ball diamonds, two practice diamonds, three batting cages and concession stand.

P ORTLAND, INDIANA HOME OF THE JAY COUNTY PATRIOTS
County seat
of “the only Jay in the USA,” Portland might be a small, rural community in Northeast Indiana – but, for its size, the city of 6,800 has a lot to offer!
Jay County was named for John Jay, the first chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. Land once occupied by two Native American reservations was purchased from the Miami Tribe and made available to settlers. Portland was chosen as the county seat, and the magnificent county courthouse was completed in 1919. The Jay County Fairgrounds, located on the east side of the city, hosts a variety of annual events, including the world’s largest antique gas engine & tractor show and the nation’s largest vintage motor bike show, that attract visitors from around the globe. Other Portland attractions include the Jay County Historical Museum, Museum of the Soldier, Jay County Antique Mall, and the Arch Bridge – the only concrete bowstring-truss bridge in Indiana. For more than a decade, the National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture has been host to an annual gathering of Great Lakes Nations at Portland’s Tri-State Association Grounds. The

NCGLNAC holds cultural arts/crafts and educational workshops in Portland, as well. But, the city’s cultural attractions aren’t reserved only for tourists. Arts Place, located downtown, presents a series of performing arts events, as well as visual art exhibits, throughout the year. The organization also offers a variety of arts classes for children and adults through its ArtWorks program and individual or group music lessons through the MusicWorks program. Portland has placed great emphasis on the community’s educational offerings. It is the mission of Jay School Corporation, the sixth largest of Indiana’s school districts in land area, to provide an educational program that “causes students to think, reason, communicate and make positive contributions” to the community. John Jay Center for Learning, located in downtown Portland, is “dedicated to helping people achieve satisfaction and lifelong employability through education.” The local economy relies on both agriculture and industry. Portland’s workforce benefits from local educational programs, and the city’s businesses often attract employees from nearby counties, as well. Portland’s mayor presides over city government and its operations. The seven-member city council serves as a legislative body. Other important city government departments include the housing authority, building & planning board, and historic preservation commission. The community recognizes its responsibility to care for and maintain the area’s natural resources. Two nature preserves have been established in rural Portland, with more than 135 acres of land and nearly three miles of walking trails between them. And, the Bird Sanctuary adds another 100 acres of restored wetlands with a 1/4mile loop trail of medium difficulty. Portland’s 33-acre Hudson Family Park, located within city limits, features an amphitheater, 5-acre pond, walking/biking trails, nature trails, and a children’s play area. The city employees’ motto, “Partners for Excellence in Public Service,” reflects Portland’s commitment in providing the highest level of service to the community.

BLUFFTON, INDIANA PARLOR CITY...OUR DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN
Visitors to
Wells County will often hear the City of Bluffton referred to as “The Parlor City,” a nickname earned after this municipality became one of the first in the state to pave its streets. Older residents still recall sitting on their front porches, or “parlors,” on warm summer evenings to visit with neighbors or wave to passersby. The county seat, Bluffton is home to one of the more memorable courthouses found in Indiana. This massive, Romanesque-style structure, possessing a 140-foot clock tower and impressive sandstone carvings, continues to serve the city residents much as it did when first constructed in 1891. Ouabache State Park, linked to Bluffton by a scenic, five-mile paved Rivergreenway winding along the Wabash River, offers a breathtaking, panoramic observation from one of the few fire towers remaining in the state. Visitors take in an eagle-eye view of Indiana’s last year-round bison exhibit, the 1,104-acre property with its modern and primitive campsites, and Kunkle Lake, which offers fishing, canoeing and other adventures to any guest wishing to get away from the day-to-day.

The new Landscapes Travel & Relocation Guide will be an essential addition to the information we distribute here at the Chamber of Commerce/Visitors Center in Wells County. We are excited for the added exposure and think it is a great opportunity to promote Wells County. —Suzanne Huffman, Executive Director Wells County Chamber of Commerce
Throughout Bluffton, small businesses are growing at an unprecedented rate, playing a crucial role in the growth of the community. Fine jewelry and clothing stores, florists, custom designs, and haute cuisine satisfy a taste for luxury without big-city prices. Few can resist the appealing aroma of gourmet cuisine on the patio of TW Fable’s fine dining establishment. Yet, it’s an entrepreneurial spirit, a solid work ethic and the willingness to roll up sleeves and embrace the future that provides local stability and continued growth for employers, as well as employees. Wells County is home to a wide array of industries that manufacture anything from artificial valves essential to sustain human life, to snacks found on the most dedicated football fan’s tailgating menu. Ownership ranges from local, private entrepreneurs to multinational firms. The agribusiness community also thrives in Wells County, where new technology, ranging from bio-fuel to wind energy to high-tech animal feeding operations, is embraced and supported. It’s the quality of life that brings people back to “The Parlor City.” On any warm summer weekend, hundreds of visitors line the Wabash River banks at Kehoe Park, an inviting outdoor concert venue, to enjoy local and regional artists filling the Bluffton skies with music during the Summer Concert Series. Bluffton’s Arts, Commerce & Visitors Centre, constructed in 1994 through private donations, is home to the Wells County Creative Arts Council and the Wells County Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development. Events held here throughout the year include at least eight gallery exhibits, fine arts opportunities for youth and adults, dances, receptions and other community activities. The Centre is joined to Kehoe Park and its amphitheatre by a footbridge over the Wabash River. Community leaders say this magnificent facility is a shining example of arts and commerce partnering in a one-of-a-kind achievement. Bluffton is a great place to visit. Better yet, it’s a great place to call “home!”
