Many couples, wrapped up in the excitement of planning a wedding, overlook the issues that will present themselves later in a marriage, says licensed marriage and family therapist, Ann Flaningam. “We’re so caught up in all the details and the excitement of the wedding that we probably aren’t always realistic about what is life really about. “We probably aren’t thinking about how we are different, how we are similar, and the specific issues we’ll deal with as a married couple.”

Over her 33-year career, Ann has counseled numerous married couples coping with a wide range of problems. “Probably some of my most favorite work is doing marital counseling,” Ann says. She recommends premarital counseling as a first step toward a healthy marriage. “I think the purpose of premarital counseling is to get a couple to really begin to look at what are the pertinent issues that couples have to deal with when they are in a relationship with each other,” Ann explains. “I think it’s also to begin teaching the couple about

commitment, about communication, and about problem solving.” Ann sees premarital counseling as a sort of Marriage 101 course for engaged couples. “No matter what we do,” she adds, “whether we work in a factory, drive a taxi, become a teacher or a physician, we have to have some kind of training. “Well, how do we learn how to be married? You need some sort of coaching, some kind of training about how to be married.”

Marriage Advice In premarital counseling, the couple looks at how to love and respect one another, how to fight fairly and properly deal with conflict, identifying where similarities and differences in values lie, how to problem solve, and how to manage each other’s temperaments and personality types. Ann emphasizes that it’s important to discuss these issues before marriage and commit to working through them, rather than giving up. “Certainly one of the benefits would be that the man and woman can pinpoint what their values are and then, also, to help them look at how to honor and respect each other...because I don’t think we learn that in our culture.” Ann emphasizes that marriages aren’t meant to be thrown away like garbage. Commitment is important. She compares the commitment in a marriage to that of parents’ commitment to their children. Most parents will always love their children and would never abandon a child, even if the child makes a poor choice. “I would hate the deed,” Ann says, “but I would still love my child. “That is commitment. So then, what I say to people is, Why is romantic love any different? If I stand at an altar, and I’m saying my vows to my bride or my groom,

why would that love or commitment ever be any different?” She adds, “That doesn’t mean I’m so committed that I’ve resigned myself to live in a miserable marriage. That’s not the answer, either. “As a couple, your attitude should be, We are completely committed. Now, what do we do to make this a good marriage? And, a good marriage begins with premarital counseling.” There are options for a couple that wants premarital counseling. Many couples use the resources at the church they’re being married in, while some go to their own personal counselor. Other options include online counseling tools, books, a class, or a DVD series.

The months of planning for a wedding can be a stressful time in a bride’s life. A girls’ day out is sometimes exactly what a bride needs – to relax and spend quality time with her friends and family. Diller also advises guests to be well-hydrated and stay hydrated. Massage releases built-up toxins in the body, and drinking plenty of water will help to flush the toxins out of the body.

Diller explains that massage is used to loosen muscles and increase circulation in the body. Tension and stress cause muscles to tighten and rope and rock-like knots to appear.

Debbie explains that the most important thing to look for when shopping for a gown is to find one that “above all, flatters a bride’s shape and personality.” Online shopping doesn’t allow a brideto-be the luxury of trying on a gown to see how it looks before purchasing. Debbie stresses that finding a shop with excellent customer service is an

A-lines still make everyone look good, no matter what your size.” Debbie says her shop has moved to a higher quality line of gowns. “We select our inventory from some of the top designers at the bridal markets. We don’t like a cheap look, and neither do our clients.”

According to Debbie, the difference in quality is noticeable. “You can really tell when you are at market and see them all side by side. The materials, structure and details really make the dress fit and look stunning. That’s what we strive for here.

Rose Gate Bridal carries gowns for bridesmaids and mothers, as well as tuxedo rentals, “making it easier for ladies to coordinate everything.” Debbie says they carry attire for the entire wedding party. And, the shop offers reception decoration rentals.

“We have the time and desire to make a bride as spectacular as possible at our boutique. We won’t quit until we have it right.”

Debbie offers some final advice. “Plan on at least six months’ time for the shop to order and receive your dress and wedding party attire, and allow for alterations. You don’t want to be worrying about running out of time.

For those brides-to-be working with a tight budget, Debbie says, “We also offer consignment on both our bridal and prom department as a way to help girls stay on budget while still receiving a quality, in-style gown. “Alterations can be scheduled with our exclusive expert.”

The wedding cake is one of the most integral parts of the entire wedding day, and its design requires preparation and corroboration on all parts. A wedding cake is admired and sampled by guests, who are usually offered a choice of flavors, and, one year later, the cake becomes part of a ritual for the newlywed couple. For Kellie Ashmore, creating cakes is a business, as well as a passion. Her first attempt at decorating – a Bob the Builder cake for her son’s birthday – received rave reviews from party guests.

Dan, Kellie’s high school sweetheart and husband of fourteen years, encouraged her new-found interest in cake decorating. When Dan passed away after an illness, Kellie decided to open her shop, Kellie’s Kakes, in his memory. With a special temperaturecontrolled van to transport the cakes and the perfect shop to host parties and events, she is a one-woman crew who bakes, decorates and delivers.

And so, much time and effort goes into the creation of each wedding cake. Kellie meets with couples by appointment to discuss orders for wedding cakes. She offers a variety of packages and deals, and likes to get to know the couple’s interests or hobbies. Things to Know Before You Go When choosing your reception venue, there are several things you need to know before your initial visit – like whether the venue will hold your guests….comfortably. Base your estimated guest number on the number of invitations you’re sending out. Find out EXACTLY what is included in the price – venue, security, bar services, tables, chairs, linens, set-up and teardown. If the venue requires use of their food services, check to see if the cost is per person or per actual plate served. Also, inquire about the leftover food. ROMER’S EVENTS: One-Stop Wedding & Reception Venues Article by

Are you looking for that perfect venue to host your wedding, reception, rehearsal dinner or bridal shower? Romer’s Catering & Entertainment Facilities may be the perfect venue for your next occasion. Owners Neil and Karen Romer specialize in events and catering, but their story begins at a grocery store. Nearly 40 years ago, the couple started out operating Romers IGA, a simple “momand-pop” grocery in Saint Henry, Ohio. After vesting twenty three years in the store, larger chains began emerging

with cheaper prices, and at times, it was difficult to make ends meet. It was time for a transition for the family. Fortunately, the Romers discovered they could fill a niche for an entirely different market. Karen was on the St. Bernard Ladies Sodality board and was asked to prepare a full meal for a Monday meeting. Karen opted to take care of a majority of the side dishes, and it was decided that Neil would make his delectable fried chicken. The meal was an immense success and led to entirely new opportunities.

Neil was asked to make his delicious chicken again for a 40th wedding anniversary dinner. That meal led to a 25th wedding anniversary party, where they were asked to cater the entire event. And so, the Romer’s found themselves with a new business -- one that began with a party they hadn’t even offered to cater. As word spread and the business grew, Neil and Karen started catering out of the back of the grocery store, and in 1986, they began calling it the “Catering Kitchen.” In time, they realized there

And, as their commercial equipment put a strain on the grocery’s outdated breaker system, the Romers knew they would have to develop a plan. In May of 1996, with an astounding 81 confirmed bookings for the reception hall even before they broke ground, construction began on the St. Henry facility that would serve as a larger kitchen and local venue for weddings and events. As the operation grew, so did the need for similar facilities in neighboring communities. The Romers opened their Celina facility in February 2004, and their son became the new manager, assisting them in the expansion. A short time later, the Greenville, Ohio, facility opened. Not long after this, the Romers purchased Overdrive, a venue located on State Route 127. The Romers also operate Westlake Hotel Villas, a “great place to house your guests.” Each of these venues is the prime location for a wedding, providing ample dance space and beautifully decorated facilities, along with nearby accomodations for all overnight guests. The Romer’s transformed their venues into every bride’s dream location by offering “professional home-cooked” catering options, along with all the important reception particulars

to assist any new bride. They offer decoration packages, including vases or centerpieces. They can coordinate cakes, provide DJ services, and shuttle guests to their accomodations the evening of the event. Consultations take place periodically throughout the planning process to ensure that all needs are met, and the bride’s “vision matches what they have prepared.” At Romer’s, the staff strives to make each wedding as stress-free as possible, and they aim to serve each family as if it were “their own family.” It’s really a “one-stop shop,” when it comes to weddings, since everything can be taken care of in one location. For one recent wedding, would be traveling from as far away as Oklahome and New York. The groom actually found out about Romer’s while searching the Internet. The engaged couple felt Ohio was a nice middle ground for the families, and since everything could be handled at a Romer’s facility, it served as a prime location, especially with the overnight accommodations for guests. Perfect Day

Pick vendors you like...they are with you all day! Personalize your wedding...it is your day, after all! Making each detail personal allows your guests to see who you are as a couple and makes your day even more special and memorable. Be sure to tell your photographer about special details so they are captured in your photos. Plan the small things. For example, have a corner for your bridesmaids “stuff” so stray items don’t appear in the photograher’s shot. Bring a non-plastic hanger for a dress shot. During the rehearsal, clean up and clear out areas that will be photographed. Use a wedding coordinator. This person takes care of all the details so you can enjoy the day!
