he world we live in today has become more and more “convenient.” There’s not much we do on a regular basis, outside of lawn and garden work or warehouse and factory work, that qualifies as real exercise. For most of us, “exercise” means leaving our air-conditioned house or office and walking to our car to go buy an ice cream cone! Is it any wonder that gyms and fitness centers are on the upswing? Even in a small town like Van Wert, we have a number of businesses offering to challenge our bodies in ways that we don’t or can’t in our normal lives. Trisha Breese Martin has been interested in helping people reach their physical fitness goals for many years. Fifteen years ago,

she was working at the Van Wert County YMCA as a trainer and fitness instructor. She began working with Tina Lones, a fitness coach from the Lima area, and it was her influence that created within Trisha the desire to operate her own fitness center. “Tina, who now owns the F.A.S.T. fitness centers in Lima, was the one who really mentored me--not only in my wanting to be a fitness instructor, but also a business owner,” Trisha recounts. “She told me she thought that I could not only be a great fitness coach, but also run my own fitness business. I began to work out exactly what sort of fitness studio would fit into a community, without being just another ‘cookie-cutter’ gym.” SEPTEMBER 2016 | wabashvalleyliving.com | 5

that offered fitness classes and personal training without memberships--”the a la carte business model,” she laughs. “My clients pay as you go. “There are no hidden fees or contracts to sign. You pay for a class or purchase personalized training with a certified instructor. That’s it!” After working for other gyms and fitness centers in Lima and Delphos, Trisha met Kelly Stevenson of Delphos. Kelly agreed to partner with her as business manager and nutrition coach.

Trisha continues, “Four years ago, I knew the time was right for me to start my own fitness business. But, I didn’t want it to be just another gym that the average person couldn’t afford. “I wanted to help turn people’s health goals upside down, to make a permanent difference in the lives of the average American. I needed to find a way to make good health and fitness affordable, while offering the community a product not offered by other gyms and fitness studios.” That’s when she came up with a business plan for a gym

The pair began offering fitness classes, personal training, and nutrition training in the basement of the Van Wert YWCA in January 2015. In a very short time, the classes outgrew the space available, and Trisha and Kelly began looking for a location with more room.

had already located a potential space on south Washington Street, but it needed “a lot of work,” according to Trisha. “The building had been part of a car dealership originally, and then cut up into spaces for several businesses. The area we wanted had been the garage of the car dealership, and then was retrofitted into a chiropractor’s office, complete with cubicles and extra walls. “We needed to open up the space to give our classes room and make our fitness equipment more accessible to all ages and abilities.” The loan from the Van Wert fund did just that. Two months after receiving the money to transform the former chiropractor’s office into a wide-open gymnasium, Trisha and Kelly were able to open Gen-X Training Studio, LLC at its new facility on south Washington Street.

Located in the building behind Wild Willy’s restaurant, just across the street from the band pavilion at Fountain Park, Gen-X Training Studio has continued to build its clientele and fitness class schedule from its opening in January 2016. And, what Trisha and Kelly have to offer is also fresh and unique to the Van Wert area. Kelly has become a certified fitness nutrition coach. She is there to help overhaul the eating habits of clients, setting up personal nutrition programs and nutritional support services to help clients lose weight or just eat healthier and feel better. Trisha is a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor at Gen-X Training Studio, as well as a kickboxing instructor and boxing trainer, and she offers classes and training in all those areas. “I set up personal training sessions with clients of many ages and abilities,” Trisha says.

7 7

“I create personalized exercise and movement programs based on the client’s needs. “I work with functional training-movement with strength, stability, and balance. I also can ramp up the level of exercise with plyometric (jumping) work.” Gen-X Training Studio has a great circuit class (fast-paced movement from exercise to exercise, usually alternating aerobic activity with muscle strengthening or toning) that is quite popular right now. Trisha offers a kickboxing class a couple of times a week, and she trains boxers one-on-one. A few more instructors have joined them in the studio, including Mary Jane Fast, who teaches the popular Zumba classes, and Gretchen Klinker, who handles yoga classes. “We are very excited to be a part of the Van Wert community, bringing health and well-being to our neighbors,” Trisha adds. Exercise is something we all want and need, and Gen-X Training Studio is a great place to start being healthier and more fit. Berne 260-589-2142

n 1978, Village People sang, “You’ll find it at the YMCA.” And, today, the Caylor-Nickel Foundation Family YMCA, located in Bluffton, Indiana, aims to provide what any Wells County resident— young, old, male and female— might need in order to achieve an active, healthy lifestyle. Launched by local volunteers, the Caylor-Nickel Foundation Family YMCA is a branch of The YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne. The nonprofit organization’s mission is “to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.” The 46,000 square-foot, stateof-the-art facility in Bluffton was opened to the community in January, 2015. Over 4,400 individuals of all shapes and

sizes belong to the Caylor-Nickel Foundation Family YMCA. Jon Jenkins, Executive Director of the Caylor-Nickel Foundation Family YMCA, says the facility is a popular place to be on any given day of the week. According to Jon, “The most used features of our facility would be our Wellness Center that maintains over 50 firstrate pieces of strength and cardio equipment, plus a fully stocked free-weight center.” He continues, “Our pool is a large draw for families with small children, as it features a splash pad.” In addition, this communitycentered nonprofit organization provides members with two fullsized basketball and volleyball courts, a multi-purpose room, and outdoor playing fields. People join the YMCA for a multitude of reasons. According to Jon, “Someone may want or need to join because their physician has told them they need to begin an exercise regimen to restore their health.” He continues, “A family may want to join because they have small children who they want to have learn to swim, or they want to take advantage of our free Child Watch while they exercise. An older couple may want to join because they love pickle ball, and we have a couple of excellent courts for that purpose.” The Caylor-Nickel Foundation Family YMCA provides families with unmatched childcare solutions. The facility is home to the Wells County Y Early Learning Center, which provides full-time licensed child care.

The Early Learning Center offers childcare for children in kindergarten through fifth grade from 6 a.m. to beginning of the school day, and from the end of the school day until 6 p.m. High-quality care is available during summer break, as well, through a 10-week day camp. In addition, members can receive free care for children up to seven years old for as many as two hours a day through the Y’s On-Site Child Watch program. Conveniently, members can drop off children and exercise at the Y from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, and between 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

For middle school and high school students, there are a number of reasons to join the YMCA. According to Jon, who has been in his position for three years, “a young man may join because he wants to gain strength for a certain athletic endeavor, or a young woman may join because she plays basketball and needs a place to practice her skill through the summer.” Jon and his staff provide enjoyable activities, including flag football, indoor triathlons, table tennis tournaments, and corn hole tournaments. According to Jon, a youth recreation director was recently added to his staff and will continue to add specialized programs to provide all teens in Wells County an opportunity to live an active lifestyle. The Caylor-Nickel Foundation Family YMCA participates in the Healthways Silver Sneaker

program, which provides memberships to seniors through members’ supplemental health insurers. Jon adds, “We currently have over 600 of these members, and they utilize our pool, our hot tub, and our Aerobics Room, where highly engaged instructors help them maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.” Jon and his staff are working on creating more adult programming, including Diabetes Prevention and LIVESTRONG for cancer survivors, in addition to more holistic approaches to weight loss. Anyone can be a member at the Caylor-Nickel Foundation Family YMCA. In fact, says Jon, “No one is turned away because of cost.” The organization provides financial assistance toward individual or household memberships. “This is a great place to stay active throughout the year,” says Jon. “It

is a warm and friendly place to build relationships and community, and it provides an abundance of potential opportunities that would make Bluffton (and Wells County) a better community.” The Caylor-Nickel Foundation Family YMCA even offers social opportunities. Jon explains, “We have folks that just sit and drink coffee in our lobby.”

he Sleep Lab at Adams Memorial Hospital opened in July 2005 when the hospital’s operations moved into the new facility on Mercer Avenue in Decatur, Indiana. The lab is located on the first floor of the hospital. The department opened at a time when the awareness of sleep apnea and its effects on overall health were on the rise. Physicians were becoming more aware of sleep issues, in general. “Apnea” is defined as a period of time, lasting at least ten seconds, when breathing does not occur. An estimated 18 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea. “Obstructive sleep apnea” occurs when something is blocking the

airway, and the patient is unable to breathe for a short period of time. “Central sleep apnea” occurs when there is no signal from the brain telling the person to breathe. Cary Arner, a respiratory technician and Supervisor of the Cardio/ Pulmonary Department, describes obstructive sleep apnea. “People will, throughout the night, repeatedly stop breathing, wake up just enough to begin breathing again, and go back to sleep.” He continues, “What happens in sleep apnea is the airway actually collapses on itself. When a person is in the deep REM sleep cycle, they are completely relaxed--actually even paralyzed. Otherwise, we would act out our dreams.” SEPTEMBER 2016 | wabashvalleyliving.com | 15

Patients don’t understand why they experience fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness. “They know they were in bed all night sleeping, as far as they could tell, because they don’t wake up enough to remember it,” Cary explains. “Or, a spouse may complain that he or she snores like crazy.” Often a loud, gasping noise is reported just as the body wakes up enough to resume breathing. “Most often, it’s the family doctor ordering the sleep study,” explains Cary. In the lab at Adams Memorial Hospital, sleep studies are performed three nights a week in the two cozy, home-like bedroom settings. A registered sleep lab technician conducts an overnight diagnostic sleep study, a polysomnogram, in which a number of leads are placed on the patient to monitor brain waves, heart rate, blood pressure, and eye movement. The amount of oxygen in the blood, air movement through the nose while breathing and snoring, and chest movements are also monitored. 16

A camera in the room allows the technician to remotely observe the patient. “The biggest misconception people have,” says EEG/Sleep Tech Frances Witsaman, “is that someone will be sitting right there in the room with them, watching them sleep. And, that’s just not the case.” Careful attention is given to duplicate the atmosphere of a “normal” night’s sleep for the patient. The sleep lab rooms each have a recliner, television and private bath. The staff is happy to accommodate the schedules of those who work 2nd or 3rd shift. The sleep technician then assembles the data from the study into a report that a sleep specialist uses to determine if sleep apnea is occurring. The Sleep Lab’s medical director, Dr. Sanjay S. Jain, from the Lutheran Medical Group, is a pulmonologist, as well as a sleep specialist. Several factors contribute to the likelihood of sleep apnea. Obesity can be a factor, as there is more tissue to press down on the airway.

Body shape and where a person carries his/her their weight factors in, as does sleeping on one’s back. 444 E. Main Street, Berne

An overall less active lifestyle is thought to be the reason for the increase of sleep apnea diagnoses. Regular use of alcohol is also a contributing factor.

There are a variety of dangers associated with untreated sleep apnea, including impaired driving due to sleepiness, increased danger when operating machinery, increased insulin resistance, which makes diabetes more difficult to control, and high blood pressure that is more difficult to manage, as well as a greater risk of heart attack. “Just imagine all night struggling to breathe, how much harder the heart will then have to work,” suggests Cary. While rare, death due to sleep apnea does occur. “The most prescribed treatment for sleep apnea,” he says, “is CPAP, which stands for ‘continuous positive airway pressure’. This pressure doesn’t allow the airway to collapse.”

The CPAP machine can be outfitted with a variety of face masks to meet the needs and comfort of each individual. “It is hard to get used to it at first,” admits Frances. “One of the tech’s jobs is to convince people the benefits are worth the inconvenience.”

the correct pressure setting for the patient. Some patients return to the sleep lab for another overnight stay to determine the correct setting, while some patients with a very probable diagnosis will do the diagnostic phase, as well as the pressure setting phase, in the same night. “Patients who’ve struggled with very severe apnea are so happy when the tech takes the mask off in the morning. They say, ‘It’s morning? I can’t believe I slept.’ “It’s rewarding for the tech to hear,” says Frances. Another treatment option that has become available in the last five years is an oral device, prescribed by a dentist, to adjust the position of the jaw. “Home sleep testing is really picking up,” she adds. The patient picks up a device, uses it at home, and returns it to the hospital. The techs retrieve the information and create a report. Although the results can be somewhat less precise, and the camera option is missing, insurance plans often encourage this less expensive option.

Sleep apnea isn’t the only concern for Adams Memorial Hospital’s Sleep Lab staff. “There’s a lot of different sleep disorders,” says Frances. The lab can assist with other sleep-related conditions, such narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, and situations where the patient can only sleep for a short time or has very poor quality of sleep. “The body cannot function optimally when it is not getting restful sleep,” says Cary. The Sleep Lab at Adams Memorial Hospital exists to diagnose and treat sleep disorders so its patients can enjoy better health.

Choices That Make Life Better

W

Article by Holly Wuebker

hen analyzing different types of mobility options for yourself or a loved one, there can be many competitors to choose from and a variety of options available. That’s when you find it’s important to go with someone you know, someone you can trust, and someone who knows what they’re doing. New Visions Medical Equipment of Coldwater, Ohio is ready to assist with a variety of mobility equipment. The company’s motto is “Helping you live well at all stages of life.” Established by Ed and Carolyn Homan in 1998, the company’s foundation was primarily based on helping others like their daughter, Katie.

26 | SEPTEMBER 2016 | wabashvalleyliving.com

Katie was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Unfortunately, the Homans learned the company that had assisted with her mobility needs was closing. Medical equipment providers in Dayton didn’t want to travel to the rural area, so the Homans began looking for other options. Ed and Carolyn knew they needed to find a way to provide for Katie’s needs. Eventually, they decided the best option would be to start a business that could help their daughter—and others with similar needs. It is the goal of New Visions Medical Equipment to “help keep you living your life to the fullest while doing so in your own home.” The company offers a variety of

items, “from mobility products to pain relief…just about everything you may need.” And, New Visions’ line of scooters, lift chairs, beds and other equipment are customizable, based on the individual. The staff at New Visions Medical Equipment focus on meeting with the client, understanding the client’s needs, and then providing the best options available. New Visions’ products are evaluated by physical therapy experts at Ohio State University. When you walk through the entrance, you are greeted with a smile, a welcome, and a view of some of the different options available at New Visions Medical Equipment. It’s important for customers to have a variety of choices, including color, so they can be more comfortable and feel more at ease. The company also supplies equipment to therapists, hospitals, and nursing homes. New Visions Medical Equipment is an accredited home medical equipment (HME) company, and owner Ed Homan is certified as an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) and a Relocation and Transition Specialist (CRTS).

Department of Developmental Disabilities client home where the Homans’ daughter Katie, currently 28, resides. It’s possible that many living in the region don’t realize the wide array of mobility products and services that are so accessible and close to home. New Visions Medical Equipment staff travel throughout four or five counties to complete installations, repairs, and a range of other services. The company website has a full listing of the available options, along with the “Ask Sarah” blog to answer customers’ questions. Medicare and Medicaid guidelines change frequently, so it’s important to discuss what the options are prior to making purchases, especially since there is a plethora of choices available. It’s important for customers to understand that there are certain steps and measures to providing the best services at the most affordable costs. Many of New Visions Medical Equipment’s customers are very loyal. In fact, there are families who, over multiple generations, have been decades-long patrons. A few of these customers visit during open houses just to see how the company and those running it are doing—they’ve become somewhat like family. The Homans’ company is very much family-centered. Their daughter, Sarah Moeller, serves as office manager, and Janet Fledderjohann, a family friend, assists with accounting. Together, the team is effective 29

M & M MARKET

Small Town Grocery Still Family-Owned

I

Article by Beth Steury

n the winter of 1987, Mike and Mary Fields purchased Tate’s in downtown Geneva, Indiana. The business, originally owned by Mike’s parents, Tate and Helen Fields, until the late ‘70s, had focused on butchering and rental of “meat lockers.” Tate passed on his meat cutting know-how to Mike, who used the skill to work his way through college. Mike earned an associate’s degree in accounting after his military service in Vietnam. Although Mike had not been a regular part of the store’s operations for many years, when his parents’ shop became available, Mike and Mary decided the timing was right to purchase the family business. They renamed the meat and grocery establishment M & M Market.

As is common with major, lifechanging decisions, Mike and Mary had moments of doubt, wondering if they had made the right decision. The doubts were very soon laid to rest. At the time the younger couple took over the store’s operations, Mike was working at General Electric, and Mary was at home with their four young children. Shortly after purchasing his parents’ business, Mike learned his job at General Electric would be coming to an end. He kept his job another 19 months, and was one of the last employees to be terminated. This reality brought confirmation that the timing for purchasing the store had been perfect.

In M & M Market’s early days, the Fields saw little time away from their budding business. They committed themselves fully to growing the company.

Mike soon realized he enjoyed spending 60 hours in the store during the week a great deal more than the comparable time at his former factory job. Although both he and Mary missed the five weeks of vacation, and the health and dental coverage that accompanied the GE position, they felt good about their new direction.

Regular Weekend Events:

As is often the case in a family business, the Fields children grew up helping in the store. Those early experiences must have left favorable impressions, as two of their children have returned to work in the store as adults.

Mary says, “We were somewhat surprised but thrilled the children wanted to be involved in the business.”

Abby Davidson joined her husband and brother about three years ago and does accounting work. Bill, Abby, and Tony currently fill the management positions. Although the elder Fields consider themselves retired, Mike continues to do the bookkeeping and assist with maintenance. Mary pitches in where she sees a need.

“It’s hard to completely pull out,” Mary admits. But, they are able to enjoy more time with their grandchildren, several of whom are now on the M & M Market payroll, as well. In mid-June, M & M Market celebrated their grand opening at a new location on North Main Street. “We always knew we could use more space,” Mary affirms. At one point, they had added on to the back of the store and considered an upper level expansion but decided it wasn’t a very practical option. “When this property (formerly Harmon’s Chevrolet Restoration Parts) came up for sale, the boys went to look first.” Then, Mike and Mary toured the location. Several months of talking and praying about the decision followed. “It was difficult to consider leaving the downtown area,” Mary shares. “To even think about it was sad.” However, the facility offered five to six times the store space, as well as ample storage and much better parking. 35

The purchase of the facility was completed in the fall of 2014, and the renovations began in March of 2015. The family handled the “normal construction” needs themselves. Experts were called in to do what they felt needed a professional touch.

“We closed on a Sunday downtown, ordered pizza, and the entire family worked to put the finishing touches on the new store.” And then, the realization hit that a chapter in their lives had ended. Someone uttered, “Do you realize we’ve closed the doors for the last time here?” It was a somber moment. “We raised our kids here,” Mary remembers thinking. They reopened on Tuesday at the new location. While leaving downtown was difficult, it was no doubt the right decision. The newlyrenovated facility has allowed the market to double the size of the meat cases and increase the meat selections. The cheese offerings have expanded, as well, to include some unique, specialty flavors, and bulk grocery items also have increased. “Since the move, our business has picked up. The kids are very busy,” Mary reports, smiling. She is quick to express appreciation for the community’s support in the store’s relocation. M & M Market will continue to be known for its bratwursts, now available in over 150 varieties; its seasoned

boneless skinless chicken breasts in 30 varieties; and, its many bulk foods offerings, such as sugar, flour, salt and cereals in quantities up to 50 lbs. “The boys try to keep the prices as competitive as possible without sacrificing quality,” Mary says. She explains the best deals can always be found when purchasing in bulk, whether it be for meat, cheese or grocery items. After so many years serving Geneva and the surrounding area’s grocery needs, the Fields family is tuned into what their customers want and plan to carry on that tradition. “We’ve been blessed,” concludes Mary. “We wouldn’t be where we are without our customers, and we want to express our gratitude to them.” Check out the store’s Facebook page and plan to stop by their new location soon. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

SWISS CITY DANCE

Diverse Dance Opportunities

A

Article by Jaci Gorrell

ccording to owner Mackenzie Billington, the recreational dance studio Swiss City Dance, located in Berne, Indiana, came about through a whirlwind of events.

August of 2014, the studio received a transformative makeover. “We had to completely renovate everything in [the studio]. It was the old Miller’s Maytag building, and it was in really rough shape.

After the dance studio at which she was employed switched ownership, Mackenzie explains, “…my old boss told us if we wanted to do our own thing, she would allow it and release our contracts. The other teachers and I kind of got together and were talking.

“We had to pretty much redo everything; the floors, walls, and trim are all new. We kept the frame, and that was about it,” Mackenzie recalls.

“From there, we opened within two months. It was crazy. We just kind of decided to run with it and see how it went, and it went really well!” In the span of time between the idea to open a studio and Swiss City Dance’s first registration in

Though the studio came together quite rapidly, the dancing backgrounds of the individual teachers at Swiss City Dance were several decades in the making. Mackenzie elaborates, “I started dancing when I was three at Dancing Ltd. in Decatur.

Eventually, that studio switched ownership and became the Decatur Dance Academy where Miss Kelly McKeever took over. She was a professional dancer, so she brought a lot more into the studio. “I trained under her for a good chunk of my life, and then once I started to get older, I went to some conventions and trained under different professionals in the industry. I continued dancing, and I haven’t stopped; I’ve been dancing for twentytwo years now.” As for different dance styles, Mackenzie shares, “I have trained in almost every technique.” Her favorites are ballet and jazz. “I’ve also done training in hip hop, clogging, and a little bit of tap. I have done Hawaiian workshops in the past, as well, and I touched more on musical theater and modern contemporary dance as I got older.” The skills she learned through years of dancing, in tandem with those of the five other teachers at Swiss City Dance, allow the studio to provide ten different styles of dance for student classes. “Miss Anastasia and Ms. Holly are specialized in tumbling and gymnastics. Miss Anastasia has trained in everything else dance-wise, as well. Ms. Holly came and joined us this past year, and she has more of a cheer and tumbling background.

www.velocitymotorsofbluffton.com 40

“Ms. Hannah and Miss Caley are also trained in everything. Miss Caley has more clogging experience than anyone else at the studio, so she heads our clogging program.” As an individual who has danced most of her life, Mackenzie maintains that learning to dance provides many valuable benefits in life. “As well as any sport, dance teaches kids about taking critiques, taking advice from people, and learning responsibility.

“Certain dance techniques are very structured, and you have to do it a certain way. It definitely teaches kids discipline and gives them a drive to work to get better.” As the studio has grown over the past two years, the staff have added several new class options to their roster. The newest of these programs will be this year’s special needs Creative Movement class, to be instructed by Ms. Holly.

Mackenzie explains, “I’m very excited for this class! We had kind of thrown out an idea about having a special needs class when we first opened, but none of us had enough experience to tackle it, and to tackle it well. “When Ms. Holly came on board, it was kind of in the back of our minds. It wasn’t until we had our staff Thanksgiving and we were all talking, that Ms. Holly said something about the fact that she used to be a special needs teacher. Then, it all kind of clicked. “We didn’t know if she’d want to take on teaching her own class, but she was excited to run with it. “Essentially, the kids will come to class with an adult buddy, and we’re going to use different techniques and props to get them engaged and encourage social skills, interaction, and gross motor skills. They will do some fun dance activities and learn a routine to perform at the end of the year.” This Creative Movement class is just one of the many diverse dance options that will join the studio this fall. As director and owner of Swiss City Dance, Mackenzie admits that her job is not without challenges and stresses. However, she affirms that the position is ultimately fulfilling,

saying, “I love choreographing. I think that’s my favorite part of it—to see the ideas in my head actually get portrayed through the students. All of our students are incredible workers, and they always take what I see in my head and do it really well.” Indeed, most nights the studio is a whirlwind of music, sparkling outfits, and twinkling toes—a different kind of whirlwind than what was experienced in its founding, but the very thing that makes Swiss City Dance what it is today. Swiss City Dance offers classes for children fifteen months and older, as well as adults. Students can choose from Pre-dance (for ages fifteen months to three years, completed with an adult buddy), tap, ballet, jazz, clogging, hip hop, creative movement, production, Irish, cheer, and musical theater. It’s not too late to enroll a dancer this year! The studio will accept students until the end of September. Call or text the studio phone anytime, or email Mackenzie at swisscitydance@gmail.com. You can also follow Swiss City Dance on Facebook or Instagram to stay up to date with studio happenings.
