Innovation Meets Illumination THE LASTINGLITE EMPORIUM Article by Jaci Gorrell

hen wax, warm embellishment and electricity come together, you have a LastingLite candle. When creativity, innovation, and passion come together, you have Neal and Cindy Reusser, the duo behind the manufacturing company CR Designs—and, a new shopping addition in downtown Berne, Indiana. An electronics engineer, Neal found himself becoming more interested in his wife’s candle company as his line of work began to decline. He explains, “I was installing video systems in hospitals, foundries, TV stations, manufacturing facilities, high schools—even nuclear power plant systems.

“As things evolved, and desktop editing came into play, my business started going down, while Cindy’s business continued to grow. We prayed about the situation to figure out what we were supposed to do.” In 1999, Neal left his line of work in electronic engineering and joined his wife in her work at CR Designs. The LastingLite, the mainstay and focal product of the family business, was first conceived when Cindy envisioned a candle unlike any other. Cindy recalls, “It was a process between Neal and myself. I wanted to design a candle that had all these really pretty embedded flowers

in it, but he said, ‘That’s going to catch on fire when you burn it!’” According to Cindy, Neal suggested that there had to be a way to “electrify a candle,” in order to make her fantastical vision a reality. His engineering background was the key to creating the “Original Electric Candle.” “Neal worke d on the electrical part. My dad helped me work on the mold part. And, the rest is history,” Cindy laughs. The LastingLite candle, a wax sleeve “candle” with a small light bulb inside, was the first of its kind when it was introduced by CR Designs in 1999. Cindy and Neal pioneered their own unique candlemaking method to create a candle with a soft glow and realistic, functional, and aesthetic appeal.

“The process takes several hours per batch. It’s a babysitting process because candles are finicky. We had to figure out how to do it through trial and error until we found something that worked!”

Each candle is carefully handcrafted in Berne, Indiana. The production process? “We get 2,000 pounds of hard wax in at a time,” says Cindy. “We put additives in the wax to make it the right consistency and opacity so the candles glow, but they’re not clear.

Sixteen years later, the process has been perfected. CR Designs sells thousands of

It wasn’t until this year that Cindy and Neal decided to branch out from wholesale into retail. Unlike typical business expansions, the decision to add a retail location was primarily spiritual. “This is going to sound really strange to most people, but as I had my prayer time, I just felt that there was a move coming,” Cindy describes. “It really was just a stirring in us, so Neal said, ‘Okay, we’re going to start looking.’” Neal says their search was “Godorchestrated” and the building they purchased, located on Main Street in Berne, was an altogether “perfect fit” for the business. Cindy adds, “The cabinets were already here. We had to paint—just do some cosmetic things—but other than that, the building was in good shape!” Following a coat of fresh paint and signage marking the new store, The LastingLite Emporium simply needed a selection of merchandise, arranged artfully by the Reusser family. The LastingLite Emporium offers LastingLite candles, as well as a collection of home décor, children’s clothing, kitchenware, inspirational decorations, and more. Neal and Cindy credit many of their store products to the connections they’ve made at trade shows. After being introduced to trade shows as the employee of a Fort Wayne business, Cindy continued to attend the events after launching CR Designs. “It’s given us the opportunity to see what’s out

“Establishing connections is important; some of the products that we have in here, we buy from trade show vendors.” Cindy adds, “It’s a whole network! We have a whole ‘extended family’ outside of our hometown that’s from all over the United States. “A lot of times, you’re sitting at a trade show, and you have hours to kill before you see anybody. You start talking to other vendors, you go out to dinner, you make acquaintances—it’s just networking!” In recent weeks, the Reussers have moved a large antique candy counter into the Emporium and filled it with a variety of bulk candies. To the delight of many, the shop also carries a selection of DeBrand Fine Chocolates.

Finish Your Neal comments, “From a spiritual standpoint, it gets you to the point of reliance on God. “It’s the sovereignty of God and His provision that is pretty evident. We’ve learned how to tighten the belt and get through tough times together.” Aside from lessons and progress, Cindy says, “The best part of it has really been the support of the community. The people in this community have just gone out of their way to encourage us—they’re just so excited that we’re uptown! “The comments they make have really been encouraging. We’ve heard lots of people who have said, ‘I’ll buy all my Christmas gifts in Berne this year!’” Faith, ingenuity, and teamwork will remain staples of The LastingLite Emporium, and the Reussers look forward to a bright future with their newest business endeavor. The shop is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Customers with questions can reach The LastingLite Emporium by phone or email. n the quaint community of Craigville, you’ll find bits and pieces of history strewn across the showroom floor at Craigville Appliance. The relics are fitting, since the business dates back earlier than World War II!

During WWII, the Craigville business operated as an Oliver tractor dealership. Josh Hunt, Store Manager at Craigville Appliance, enjoys talking to the older generation of customers who remember buying these tractors.

This multi-family, multi-generational business was first established in 1919 by Ed and Elmer Moser. Known then as Craigville Garage, the shop originally sold tractors and tires. The Mosers even had a tool that would take the tire off the rim of a tractor, which was a big deal back in the early 1900’s.

“Older gentlemen love to come in and reminisce about the old days and their memories of the store,” says Josh. There was even a Standard Oil fueling station as part of the early business, he adds, with a gift shop where couples would come to register for weddings and anniversaries.

The company underwent a number of changes as the years passed, and Josh’s family took over the business in 1991. Dan Hunt is the second generation of the third family to own the Craigville store. He feels it is important to maintain the history of the establishment. The showroom at Craigville A p p lian ce f o cu s e s o n a modern display, with touches of antiques, to bring back the history of the store. Many of the old gift shop items can be found around the showroom floor. The old soda machines from the Standard Oil station are on display, along with many other historic items and memorabilia. After Dan first purchased the business, he expanded with a primary focus on home appliances. KitchenAid is the flagship brand

Josh and his wife try out many of the appliances that are brought into the store. They take units home and really get to know each appliance.

We want to be able to tell our customers that we have used this appliance in our home.” All of the staff at Craigville Appliance are highly knowledgeable with each of the appliances in the store. “We want to walk our clients through the entire process of choosing the right appliances for their new home. We get to know our customers and their specific needs to help find the perfect fit.” Not your typical appliance dealers, the Hunt family have also installed live displays for their customers. Many appliances are plugged in and ready to be used. “We want our customers to be able to play around with the appliance and see how it works,” Josh explains. “We will even do a demonstration for our customers.” In fact, they are currently working on building a live kitchen, so they can cook right there in the store. “We would love to have a place to demonstrate how convection cooking works.

BLACKBIRD BOUTIQUE Article by Beth Steury

E

arlier this year, Emily Shifferly, a stay-athome-mom to four children ages 2 to 13, told her husband she needed to look into going back to college or starting a business. The Decatur, Indiana resident was ready for a change, but career paths she’d once considered no longer seemed appealing. What did fascinate Emily was the prospect of owning a clothing store. Her path to this dream destination was unorthodox—and, very quick. “In early June,” she explains, “I walked into Tattered Treasures at 5 p.m. on a Monday to buy a patio set. But, by 9 a.m. on Wednesday, I had purchased the entire building.”

Emily then set her sights on establishing one of Decatur’s newest retail businesses, the BlackBird Boutique. Her first task was deciding what merchandise she would offer in the shop. “I’m not big on mainstream clothing,” Emily says. “I prefer going to a boutique because I like their clothing better.” She explains that brands carried in boutiques are not tied to a particular store chain and generally can’t be purchased at a department store or the mall. “I went to my closet and noted the brands I had bought over and over. I knew them to be quality brands.”

December 2015–www.wabashvalleyliving.com

The next step was choosing a name for the store. “I’m a big Beatles fan and took inspiration from their song BlackBird. I liked the sound of BlackBird Boutique.” Emily immediately launched into the “business” of opening a business: getting a retail sales permit and tax identification number. Next, she applied to be a retailer with each of the brands whose items she wanted to carry in her new store. The BlackBird Boutique opened on the eighth of August, just two months after Emily purchased the building, which also houses a t wo -b e dr o om , t wo bath apartment above the shop. The speedy opening was possible because of the building’s excellent condition, as previous owners had completely renovated the space. The only improvement required by the Shifferlys was the addition of free-standing dressing rooms. A huge grand opening celebration took place that first day, with a standing room-only crowd. Emily coordinated added festivities with nearby businesses. In the late afternoon, the street was blocked off to accommodate

a beer tent hosted by The Wet Spot, a food cart sponsored by Niblicks Bistro, and a local band that played into the evening. Emily chuckles when she admits her motto is, “Go all in, or don’t even bother.” Any business venture carries risks, as Emily and her husband Mitch, an owner at Shifferly’s Dodge, both understand. She is

happy to report, “We’ve been busier than I thought. I’m so excited at the response we’ve gotten already.” Emily’s favorite brands this fall include Blue Pepper, Double Zero, Umgee, and Kori America. “I try to stick with made in the USA. I offer small through large and plus sizes from XL to XXXL.”

She emphasizes, “Our focus is on the customer.” She enjoys assisting customers in determining the right colors and styles for their figure and skin tone. That’s the best part of the job for Emily—the personal approach. She also takes pleasure in seeing the change in attitude toward shopping for clothes, and the boost in self-esteem the right clothing can produce. BlackBird Boutique carries many accessories, including a line of headbands made in Fort Wayne by Emily Kai, and the very popular Bouton Bracelets from a California-based company. “Bouton actually contacted me,” shares Emily. Only 11 stores across the country carry these unique leather bracelets, which feature interchangeable snap button charms. And, soon, BlackBird Boutique will carry Bouton bracelet designs created exclusively for the Decatur shop. Simple Food for Farm Belt Folks BECKY’S VILLAGE RESTAURANT Article by Dee Fisher

I

think every small town has its gathering places—the local barber shop, the beauty parlor, and, most importantly, the town diner. You can find out all the local gossip and spend happy hours “shooting the breeze” with friends. If the diner has a good cook and a friendly wait staff, so much the better. The village of Willshire, Ohio has had a diner like this for many years. First known as Joe’s Village Restaurant, it was the place to come if you wanted home cooking and some

conversation. It was here that Becky Genth first came to work for the owner, Joe. “I’ve worked in food service jobs, both in the kitchen and in the dining room, since I was 13 years old,” she says. The question really should be, What can’t you eat there? If you like home cooking done well, Becky has something for you. “We try to make things the way your grandma made them,” she says. “For instance, our pie crusts are made with lard, and we use seasoned cast iron skillets for frying meat.

JUST BECAUSE JEWELRY/GIFTS Article by Beth Steury

A

t the time in life when many people find themselves slowing down and exiting the work-a-day world, Sharon Ewell did just the opposite. “I had always been a stay-at-home mom and a volunteer,” says Sharon. Her years of volunteering in the library and classroom at Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School in Decatur, Indiana gradually ended, leaving Sharon with too much time on her hands. After her husband Ralph’s retirement, the couple followed in the footsteps of many retirees, and for a couple of years, they traveled to Florida and then to Arizona for a portion of the winter. But Sharon missed

her family, her home and her church while away. She and Ralph agreed that leaving the area each year wasn’t for them. Still, Sharon knew she needed a meaningful pursuit. “I wanted something more to do.” In 2006, Sharon had the chance to set up shop at the Ivy Vine Boutique adjacent to The Beauty Salon on 9th street in Decatur. Sharon’s daughters encouraged her to seize the opportunity and suggested she handle jewelry. That decision launched a new business Sharon called Just Because Jewelry and Gifts. “I started pretty small, and it was strictly

Three years later, Sharon moved the gift shop to the rear portion of The Next Page Bookstore, further expanding her line of merchandise. In 2011, Just Because Jewelry and Gifts moved to its current location on 2nd Street, again with an expansion of its product offerings. “I knew I wanted to be on 2nd street rather than on the highway,” Sharon says. “This place was perfect.” The existing track lighting highlighted the many gifts items that soon lined the store’s walls. only occasional help HAVE TO COOK With LIKE YOU DON’T

be displayed and sold in the store, carefully choosing only those items she sees as a “fit” for her store. “My most popular items are the jewelry, with scarves a close second. I am Christian-based and carry many faith-based products and specialty items for various occasions, such as First Communion and Confirmation, as well as graduation and bereavement gifts.” A special children’s section in the back boasts many out-of-the-ordinary gift ideas for babies and children, including products from Bearington and Aurora. Specific items include baptismal dresses and suits for infants, handmade blankets and apron sets, and play tea sets housed in baskets.

Customers come to Just Because Jewelry and Gifts all year looking for that distinctive gift to give to someone special. This is true even more so at Christmas. Just Because Jewelry and Gifts carries many varieties of snowmen—an item Sharon expects to be big this Christmas. “I have a lot of nativities, too—as many as I can find.” From the more expensive, elaborate sets to small nativities made especially for children to enjoy, she always carries a wide variety of the traditional Christmas decoration. The store’s many gift items change throughout the year with the seasons and the discovery of new merchandise Sharon feels will meet a particular need for her customers. She’s continually seeking new, unique products to offer. “I go to the Marketplace in Columbus, where wholesale vendors display their products.” Several times a year, licensed retail business owners are afforded the opportunity to browse and purchase from these distributors. There are several Marketplace locations across the country, including Chicago, Las Vegas and Dallas.

“As soon as we have it baked, we put it in the freezer and sell it frozen. We take orders, as well.” A sidewalk kiosk posted in front of the store advertises the confectionaries available each day. “It’s another reason for people to stop in the store,” says Sharon. Popular cupcake varieties include chocolate, lemon, white chocolate raspberryfilled and Cinnabon. Sharon’s favorite part of the business? “The part I really enjoy is taking care of customers and meeting people. “I just love helping people find something that thrills them. I so often have customers come back and express how happy they were with a purchase. That’s the icing on my cake. “It’s been a purely joyful experience for me. When that ceases to be, I will close my doors and say it was wonderful while it lasted.” Stop by between 10 and 6 Tuesday through Saturday to see the extensive inventory. A Pleasing Mix of Home Décor COUNTRY CREEK PRIMITIVES Article by Jim Kirkwood

well.” Meranda has been selling this Exclusive brand of candles since the store first opened for business. She aims to carry unique candle brands and varying types, such as soy and soy mixes.

“People often say they want to buy that distinctive candle smell.” But, the scent wafting through the shop is actually a blend.

A friend of Meranda’s opened Country Creek Primitives in 2002. About three years later, Meranda bought it from her. “I liked this kind of stuff and thought it would be fun to work as a part-time job.”

“There is no way to find that scent in just one candle,” Meranda says. Opening a jar candle, she adds, “Smell this. It’s cinnamon—it is very strong. It burns

It soon became a full-time job. “This store has been here almost 13 years,” she notes with pride.

Meranda sells much more than candles and primitives. The wide-ranging inventory includes c an dles , t ar t burners, melts, wreathes, berry garlands, small and large pictures, signs, lamps, and florals. There are towels, baskets, dolls, tree ornaments, table settings, indoor furniture, flags, rugs, and a bit of very rustic outdoor furniture. Even the furniture and displays themselves are for sale. As Meranda and I explore

the large store, she tells me D. L. Schwartz Co. that the word “primitive” is 188 S.notUS Hwy. 27“I a precise descriptive. do have a bunch of family Berne, antiques IN 46711 at home —but, in here, there aren’t any antiques. They are replicas.

Meranda mentally divides primitives into loosely descriptive categories. She points to a “grungy primitive” item. It looks old but really isn’t. Regarding a particular piece of furniture she says, “This is ‘primitive’ because it is

distressed—made to look like it is older.” She calls other items “country,” showing me the differences in texture, paint, and stain. Meranda spends a lot of time finding and selecting merchandise to interest her customers. “I try to buy as much stuff made

in the USA as I can, but sometimes it is difficult to do—especially with the berries and the floral stuff. “I order if I’m getting low on something, or if I simply find something I like. We get new stuff in just about every week.” She notes that although most of the rugs she carries are made in the USA, a few are from other countries. “To make sure of their quality I take them home, use them, and then wash them.” Some of the larger items are from local crafters. Many of those incorporate recycled wood or include old and previously-used items. One example, built specially for Meranda, is a beautiful distressed table that would be a nice complement in a modernthemed home. Some local primitives stores have closed in the past few years. Thus, says Meranda, “It’s hard to keep inventory because of an increasing amount of customers.” Nevertheless, beginning in November, she had a full supply of items ready for the Christmas season. “Everybody thinks they would like to have a store like this, but it is a lot of work. I never dreamed when I bought this that it would be what it is now. “I never dreamed I’d be doing as well as I am. Even with the economy as it is, the store still does really well.”

There are three 3 primitives stores in the area, including Remember When on the south side of Portland and The General Store in Pennville (both were featured in past editions of Wabash Valley Living). Meranda explains, “We all work together because we are a small area, and we all try to carry different things.” Country Creek Primitives occupies nearly half of a very old building that sits a block east of Meridian on McNeil Street, just north of Arby’s Restaurant. Meranda describes a wide clientele.
