of long-term drug therapy had to be done in the confines of a hospital extended care facility, under the direct supervision of a doctor and pharmacist at the hospital.

In 1985, Phil Farris worked for Van Wert County Hospital, and his wife Robin worked for Central Insurance. Phil had the opportunity to attend a conference on the concept of home care and came away very excited, full of possibilities. When he shared them with others at his

workplace, most were less than supportive. They thought, No one could do that sort of care in a largely rural community. Despite the negative reactions to his ideas, Phil and Robin decided to step out in faith in May 1985, purchasing their first piece of equipment for use in home infusion therapy. A few months later, P & R Home IV Service, Inc. was certified
to deliver various types of IV drug infusions in the home and, the very next day, started with their first home patient, a cancer victim needing chemotherapy. “Our motto was, and continues to be, ‘when you’re sick, there’s no place like home,’” says Robin Farris. Their continuing mission is to provide the equipment and products necessary

LIVE YOUR LIFE. to help patients stay in their home or get back to their home as soon as possible. Infusion therapy is simply the supplying of specially compounded medication and the means to deliver it to the patient via intravenous (IV) line, directly into the blood stream. This requires specially certified training for the pharmacist and specialized delivery equipment, as well as a state-certified “clean” room for creating the drug dosages. Today, P & R works with physicians, hospitals, hospices, and even veterinarians to supply not only injectable medications but also topical gels, suppositories, and even flavored lollipops and popsicles for pediatric patients and uniquely flavored dosages forms for pets. “P & R was the first home infusion pharmacy in this area, and they continue to have a state-of-the-art infusion pharmacy available to people who need it,” explains Elias Reyes, retail operations manager for P & R. Reyes is in charge of their retail outlets, which now number four: Van Wert and Defiance, Ohio, and Decatur, Indiana, with the newest store open in Bryan, Ohio. The retail outlets are the other side of the Farris’ business. In 1998, they were able to purchase a medical supply company in Van Wert and started P & R Medical Connection.

location, to make life and recovery easier for the patient.” However, P & R Medical Connection is not your ordinary walk-in pharmacy. “We offer a full round of aid to patients, including a closed-door, specialized pharmacy that works closely with doctors providing treatments,” Robin explains. In other words, this is not the place to come get your aspirin and cold medicine; these are specialized facilities that include both a professional home infusion pharmacy and other medical equipment as a safe, effective, and significantly less expensive alternative to hospitalization. The Farris family definitely understands the point of view of the patient. In the late 1990’s, Robin was in the grips of a form of leukemia that is usually terminal. She credits her recovery to several things, the greatest of which is the hand of God, not only in personal healing, but also in leading them to start a business which gave them personal knowledge and a bit of an “edge” over other persons struggling with serious illness.

“If we had not been in this business, I would probably not have survived,” Robin says. “We were able to make better informed decisions about my care and were also able to bring me home for continuing treatment. The doctors told me, don’t come back to the hospital, we’ll treat you at home!”

The future of the smaller medical equipment and care companies is currently uncertain, to say the least. “The bigger companies get bigger, and the smaller companies like us are holding on,” Robin explains.

Nurse Practitioner Provides Attractive Care Options – Minus the Insurance Hassles
Article by Amy M. Orr Photos by Rebecca James

or one area healthcare provider, the hassles of health insurance are a thing of the past. Instead of spending hours a day filling out paperwork to satisfy insurance companies, Amy Wendel, a nurse practitioner, is seeing more patients - and has more time to focus on their needs. Born and raised in Fort Recovery, Ohio, Amy’s bent toward healthcare came at an early age. As the oldest of 11 children, she recalls,
“I was usually the one patching and fixing up my seven brothers and three sisters when they were hurt. We were a farm family, and it seemed someone was always in need of first aid.” Amy’s mother and several of her aunts are also nurses. “My mother liked to say, ‘You’ll make a great nurse, someday.’” And, Amy adds, “As a kid, all of my 4-H projects involved health and medicine.”
WVL September 2014 / 11
So, it was likely not a surprise to anyone in Amy’s family that she pursued a career in nursing following her graduation from Fort Recovery High School in 1985. Amy earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees, as well as her nurse practitioner certification, at Wright State University. When she first began college, Amy also found a job in healthcare. “I gained vast experience as a
paramedic working in several emergency rooms in Dayton while going to nursing school,” she says. “There was a nursing shortage at the time, and they allowed paramedics to staff the ERs. It was a phenomenal experience and taught me how to think on my feet and trust my own instincts. It also taught me great interpersonal communication techniques when dealing with patients under stress.”

Upon completion of her undergraduate degree, Amy was employed for a time in the ER and intensive care unit at Kettering Medical Center near Dayton. But, she says it didn’t take long before she was “itching” to continue her training. Amy took advantage of a federal program that offered full tuition reimbursement to those wishing to become advanced practice nurses. “I jumped on board and never looked back.” In 1998, Amy and her husband Steve relocated their growing family to their hometown of Fort Recovery. Amy’s first nurse practitioner position was with Vormohr Medical Center in Portland, Indiana, and she was employed there for approximately eight years. In 2006, she joined Grand Lake Health Systems of St. Marys, Ohio and worked at their offices in Celina and Minster. But, Amy soon learned to dislike one aspect of her career. “So much energy had to go into filing insurance claims, and following the ‘rules’ the insurance companies set forth. This was very stressful and took large amounts of time away from patient care. “Together, Steve and I observed the United States healthcare system rapidly changing from a patient-centered approach to an insurance-driven system in which patients were getting lost in the shuffle. I was becoming more and more frustrated and uncomfortable with what I was being asked to report to Medicare and third party insurance companies about my patients. “I was also stressed because I was being asked to see more patients and given less time to do it. Unfortunately, this is very common and more the norm than the exception for most healthcare providers across the country today.” With her husband and business partner Steve, Amy began to envision something better. “We felt like maybe we could create an approach that would serve patients more effectively and comprehensively -

and, make my life as a healthcare provider more satisfying and enjoyable.” The couple established a private practice for Amy, known as Amy Wendel Family Health, LLC. “We are a full service family practice offering wellness and preventative care, as well as injury and illness treatment. We offer laceration repair (stitches) and several different immunizations, including tetanus shots.” Unlike other medical offices in the area, Amy’s does not have contracts with Medicare, Medicaid or other insurance companies, and Amy Wendel Family Health does not file insurance claims for its patients. Instead, patients are expected to provide payment in full for services the same day. “This approach allows me to make decisions for my patients based on their needs, not what their insurance company says they can or cannot have. The focus at my office is the patient, not whether their insurance company will reimburse me for my services.” Amy Wendel Family Health also offers the option of paying an annual membership fee which covers a full year of primary care for an individual or family, including acute care of illnesses and injuries, wellness lab work, and preventative care such as colon cancer screenings and pap smears. “We have found this type of membership to be very attractive to independent business owners and farmers who want comprehensive healthcare for themselves and their families but hadn’t been able to get it due to increasing costs of health insurance premiums, which oftentimes don’t include preventative care.” But, Amy’s approach isn’t appealing only to business owners and farmers. She explains, “Many of our members simply want a more personalized, patientcentered approach to their healthcare. Our goal is to give them that.”

About 25 percent of Amy’s patients participate in the membership program. The other 75 percent consists of walk-in acute care patients. She says, “We try to keep at least half of my daily schedule open for urgent and acute healthcare issues so patients can get in quickly and efficiently. My goal is to make healthcare easier for busy people. “Because I do not file insurance claims, I am able to keep my overhead low and save money. I am then able to pass those savings on to my patients and offer much lower prices compared to other family practices in the area.” Since opening in April 2013, Amy Wendel Family Health has served more than 1,500 patients. She confesses, “I am overwhelmed at the positive response from the Fort Recovery community and surrounding areas. So far, patients are keeping my schedule consistently busy. I haven’t stopped smiling since we opened our doors last year. “Being allowed to share the very intimate and personal human experiences of my patients is probably the best part of my job. I feel honored that patients trust me enough to allow me inside their personal lives as I help them through physical and, sometimes, emotional issues. “The ultimate reward of my job is assisting a patient to attain a health goal they did not think they could attain. It is a very rewarding occupation, and I attribute our faith in God for allowing me to be in this position.”

Alleviating Pain through Physical Therapy Rehabilitating and Preparing Patients for a Return to Everyday Life
Article by Lori Linebaugh

ith over 30 years of experience, Roy Adams is a physical therapist with orthopedic clinical specialist credentials. He is also board-certified, a credential not achieved by many in this area. Roy and his staff at Adams Physical Therapy Services have been striving to make Jay County, Indiana and the surrounding area pain-free since they first opened their doors in 1999. With offices in Portland and Winchester,
the staff works hard to provide relief at the root cause of the pain, not just systematic pain relief. Adams Physical Therapy Services treats all sorts of injuries, from head to toe. Jennifer Hartley, patient care coordinator, states some of the most common injuries seen are shoulder and knee ailments. Other common ailments are vertigo, neck and back pain, and senior strengthening rehabilitation and balance rehabilitation.
On the first visit to the office, a patient can expect a full evaluation of the injury. Measurements will be taken and used as a baseline to refer back to as progress is made. At every session, measurements will be taken to insure progress is being made. A treatment plan will be written at the first visit and reviewed with patient.

LIVE PAIN FREE! A patient typically attends physical therapy two times a week. Most sessions are approximately 30 minutes long but some could be longer, depending on the injury. The staff takes care to address all injuries, since sometimes the root of the problem is not where the pain is felt.
Are you living with persistent pain or pain medications? Let Adams Physical Therapy Services help you get your life back on track. You’ll be amazed with the results!
For instance, if a patient’s right leg is hurting, an evaluation might reveal that the injury is caused by the right leg overcompensating for weakness in the left leg. The staff will then address not only the pain in the right leg but help to strengthen the left leg to help prevent further pain. The number of treatments a patient needs to take is dependent on the injury and the length of time the injury has been bothering the patient. A chronic injury is one that has been affecting the person for three months or more. These take more treatments to correct. Jennifer recommends getting an injury checked out sooner rather than later, as it could mean less rehabilitation time. The staff at Adams Physical Therapy Services also give their patients athome exercises to aid and hasten their recovery.

It is a common misconception that chiropractic care and physical therapy are similar. Physical therapy is a practice in which muscles are freed. The end goal is to have a better range of motion. In contrast, chiropractic care works to align the spine. Many times, chiropractic care and physical therapy are used in combination to help alleviate pain.

At the office, staff makes use of a BTE rehabilitation machine to help patients practice returning to a normal routine. This machine simulates all types of activities, and with 40 different attachments, it can help patients prepare for regular, everyday tasks.

One such practice attachment replicates a steering wheel. This can be used with stroke patients who are trying to learn how to drive a car again. The BTE machine will help the patient practice turning a steering wheel again, or even turning a key in the ignition switch. The Adams Physical Therapy Services staff also have to ability to connect a variety of work environment attachments, thus helping patients with a successful return to their jobs. Worker’s compensation cases are also commonly treated at Adams Physical Therapy Services. The staff communicates with the employer while tending to the employee in the case to make sure that everyone’s needs are met so the employee can return to work as quickly as possible. At the first visit, these patients go through a series of tests, which show the likelihood of the patient being able to return to work, along with the severity of the disability. These are useful not only to the patient, but the employer, as well. When coming to physical therapy appointments, one can expect continuity of care at Adams Physical Therapy Services. Patients will work with just one or two physical therapy assistants, not a different person at every visit. This helps the patients to become comfortable with their caregiver. According to Jennifer, much of the staff has been with Adams Physical Therapy Services for years, which allows the patient and the caregiver to better understand one another. This also helps patients emotionally, as they do not have to worry about who will be helping them at their next visit or if they will get along well with the caregiver. Patients are a top priority for Adams Physical Therapy Services. The offices

are open Monday through Saturday, and evening appointments are available. A therapy schedule is based on the patient’s needs. If a patient works all day, they are able to schedule physical therapy sessions after work in the evening. As patient care coordinator, Jennifer helps patients navigate insurance claims and worker’s compensation issues, and she ensures that every patient has an excellent experience when visiting. Jennifer works with all the parties involved to insure all paperwork and guidelines are met. Jennifer enjoys her role at Adams Physical Therapy Services because everyone works together well. She is also gratified to see the transformations patients make during their time in physical therapy. Patients are able to go from a first visit, where they might use a wheelchair to get around, where they walk out of the office with no assistance from persons or devices. Not only are physical injuries healed at Adams Physical Therapy, but emotional injuries are often healed, as well. Watching patients overcome adversities is a rewarding part of Jennifer’s job.

Valuable Education For Doctors and Patients
Local Dentist Considers Education the “Most Important Part” of His Job
Article by Amy M. Orr
S
ome are fortunate enough to recognize their life’s calling before they reach high school graduation. But for many of us, it requires a bit more time and a few more life experiences before we realize what we were truly meant to do. Blake Taylor was born and raised in Decatur, Indiana, where he graduated from Bellmont High School in 1993. The son of Dr. James E. Taylor, a local dentist, Blake decided to pursue
a career in retail pharmacy and completed his degree in pharmacy at Purdue University in 1998. But, while the younger Taylor was still a student at Purdue, he suddenly recognized his true calling. “While home on break during pharmacy school,” Blake explains, “I had an opportunity to assist my father on an after-hours emergency. An elderly woman was, unfortunately, suffering from gastric cancer and was also

in need of dental care between her cancer treatments. “We saw this lady on a Sunday afternoon and were able to alleviate her dental problems. Grateful, she attempted to hand my father five dollars for his trouble, but he asked her to keep the money. “When she insisted he take the money, he asked her, ‘Would you have done the same for me, had the tables been turned?’ Her reply was ‘Yes.’ “At that moment, I knew I was pursuing the wrong field for me.” Following his graduation from Purdue, Blake moved to Lexington, Kentucky to begin working as a retail pharmacist. But, within a couple years, he began applying to dentals schools. Upon receiving invitations from several of these schools, he chose to attend the University of Kentucky School of Dentistry, earning a Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree and graduating with distinction in 2004. Almost immediately, the younger Dr. Taylor returned to his hometown to work with his father at James E. Taylor Family Dentistry. In 2007, Blake purchased his father’s portion of the practice, and in 2008, the elder Dr. Taylor ended his career after 40 years of service in Adams and Wells counties. Today, Dr. Blake Taylor and Dr. Molly Sigler, a partner since 2005, continue to provide a variety of dental services in the same communities, though under a new business name. The partners settled on the name Riverstone Dental, chosen to reflect their steadfast commitment to the community, as well as the two office locations, one near the Wabash River and the other near the St. Marys.

According to Dr. Taylor, Riverstone Dental’s services include, but are not limited to: extractions, oral surgery, miniature implants, conscious sedation, root canal therapy, periodontal therapy, orthodontics for all ages, dentures and partial dentures, crowns, bridges, fillings, whitening, cosmetic dentistry, full mouth reconstruction, treatment for snoring, and restoring implants. When asked what makes Riverstone Dental unique, Dr. Taylor mentions the office’s Perio Protect method for treating gingivitis and periodontal gum disease, along with Riverstone’s comprehensive new patient exams. “We offer a complete set of radiographs, including a free panoramic film, while setting aside the proper amount of time to listen to our patients’ needs.” And, for those who are nervous about dental treatment, perhaps because of past experiences, the doctor assures, “We have a warm and inviting staff that understands what it is like to be a patient. We have assembled a team of individuals who truly want to provide the best care we can for our patients. “We also offer conscious sedation in order to help our patients relax, along with iPods, patient pillows, and blankets to make their visit more comfortable. Dr. Taylor says the partners at Riverstone Dental value education very highly - for the professionals, as well as the patients. “We spend a lot of time and money on private continuing education that helps us to utilize cutting edge research and technology in our practice so our care is the best we can provide.” He adds, “My goal is to overcome the current barriers to patient care that prevent a majority of the population from being healthy. The oral cavity is an integral part of the human body. If it is unable to thrive, then the entire body is, in fact, unhealthy. “I believe the most important part of my job is education. tool that can make people’s lives better. Our philosophy is to always accept new patients and to provide them with the dental education they need to become healthy again.” Riverstone Dental welcomes younger patients, too. Dr. Taylor says, “Children can be a real treat to work with,” though he admits they do “require more patience and understanding.” The father of two enjoys hearing a child’s perspectives on the world around them. “Sometimes, I feel like Art Linkletter while listening to kids say the ‘darndest things.’ But, it is a gift to be able to watch so many young children in our office grow up and become such fine men and women in our community.” According to Dr. Taylor, the most challenging part of his work involves insurance claims. He and other dentists are now “dealing with rising treatment costs while the dental insurance benefit reimbursements remain the same.” Dr. Taylor works in the Bluffton office on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and he is in the Decatur office on Mondays and Wednesdays. He and Dr. Sigler maintain a rotation for after-hours emergency calls. “I love what I do and that I get to meet such interesting people of all ages,” says Dr. Taylor. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons, gardening, caring for his horses, camping, walking, biking, swimming and traveling.

As Myra began looking for a home, she says she noticed the “old Boy Scouts cabin down

they were going to do with the old place,” Myra recalls. “They told me they didn’t know what to do with it - it wasn’t in a location where they wanted to build a new home. “After many prayers and some negotiations, the old place became mine. When I started to remodel, I noticed lots of military equipment,
along with abandoned Boy Scout photos and awards.” Myra asked her father about the historic artifacts stored in the cabin. “It was then that my dad told me he was a veteran of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The old building had been a barracks at the state park

for the CCC before it was moved to its present location. President (Franklin D.) Roosevelt had placed the U.S. Army in charge of the CCC, and that’s why I found old military equipment in the building.” In fact, the CCC was instituted by Roosevelt in 1933 as part of the New Deal program. The CCC’s purpose, according to a brief history by CCC Legacy of Edinburg, Virginia, was “to recruit thousands of unemployed young men” and “send them into battle against destruction and erosion of our natural resources.” Locally, CCC camps were established in Bluffton and Fort Wayne. “My dad served in Fort Wayne,” says Myra. “His job was in drainage and building ponds around the Columbia City area.” In Bluffton, the CCC workers cleared land, fashioned hiking trails, and made other improvements to the Wells County State Forest and Game Preserve, known today as Ouabache State Park. A native of Poneto, Wayne Lydy had been familiar with the park, and as a CCC worker himself, he had a good understanding of the accomplishments made there during the Great Depression. “My dad told me of his hope to have a CCC Worker Statue placed at Ouabache State Park to honor the CCC boys,” reveals Myra. Since 1995, at least 60 bronze statues have been erected at CCC developed landmarks across the United States to recognize the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps and its veterans. Wayne approached the property manager at Ouabache State Park, but Myra explains that there was little interest in the project, and “it was tabled for many months.”

effort. A new property manager took the reins at Ouabache, and Myra reports, “He was all for the statue and for making a statement about the involvement of the CCC at the Bluffton park.” With the support of Ouabache State Park leadership, Myra and her father turned their attentions toward fundraising. The cost of a CCC Worker Statue, cast in Grayling, Michigan, is approximately $23,000, not including shipping fees. The studio requires a 50-percent down payment before the casting begins, and the remaining amount plus shipping must be paid before the statue can be delivered. By this time, Myra recalls, “We had already met Larry Herron, whose father had been the cook at the Bluffton CCC camp. With his help, we started a group called Friends of Ouabache State Park, and we began fundraising two years ago.” The organization’s mission statement reads, “The Friends of Ouabache State Park are stewards of our natural and cultural resources: Serving our community to provide interpretation and volunteer opportunities in an effort to remember past contributions and to promote and preserve our park for future generations.” There are 70 members, and Myra currently serves as president. She says, “There are many ‘friends’ groups in place and new ones starting all over the country, as government funding to our state parks is less and less each year.” A 5K run called the Bison Stampede was The Friends’ first fundraising event. “We raised $2,500 on this race, with the help of our runners and the merchants in the Bluffton area,” says Myra. “Our funds were matched by the Modern Woodsmen of America, for a total of $5,000. We were on our way.”

Since then, The Friends have held another race, as well as a silent auction, an art show, and the Christmas event “Ouabache Wonderland of Lights.” In all, the group has raised enough to cover the cost of the CCC Worker Statue. They are now focused on gathering funds for the statue base. The 6-foot tall statue will weigh approximately 460 pounds. Friends of Ouabache State Park will also add three commemorative plaques to the base. Myra expects the statue to arrive in Bluffton in September, and she’s eager to have it in place at the park by the end of the month. “We will also host the annual reunion for the Indiana CCC veterans this October. We hope the statue will be in the park for them to enjoy.

A Personal Touch for Patients Fighting Cancer Providing a Safe, Effective and Less Expensive Alternative to Hospitalization
Article and photos by Sylvia Marbach
T
onya Claycomb never planned on a career involving cancer patients. The wife and mother of three, who resides in Pennville, Indiana, currently works at Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology as an oncology nurse.
After graduation from Jay County High School and completing her degree at Ball State University, Tonya took a pediatric job at a large university hospital. “I found out our unit focused on patients who had cancer and blood disorders.
“I kind of got thrown into this field almost 16 years ago,” Tonya explains. “You either love it, or you hate it. It kind of gets in your blood if you like it, and you stick with it.”
Tonya fell in love with the field and eventually landed a position with Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology, where she has been employed for the past year. She has
WVL September 2014 / 37
actually been affiliated with the practice for six years. Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology is a private practice whose focus is making treatment more convenient for cancer patients. The physicians lease space from hospitals in nearby counties so patients don’t have to make the drive to Fort Wayne to receive medication.

For example, the staff delivers chemotherapy to patients in Decatur at Adams Memorial Hospital’s Strickler Cancer Institute on Tuesdays and Thursdays. “The doctors in the community know we’re here two days a week. It’s great for the patients because they don’t have to wait for an opening or get sent up to Fort Wayne.

“The biggest goal for the office is to make sure people know we’re here so they can continue to use the services that we provide locally. We want to be here, and we want to provide treatment locally for people because it’s more convenient for the patient. “We go to Bluffton, Decatur, Huntington, Angola, Auburn,” says Tonya. “We basically ‘take our show on the road.’ We pack up our charts and our chemo equipment and bring it with us.”

Tonya’s duties are varied. “Mondays and Wednesdays are spent at a desk getting the clinic ready. So, that means going through the patients lab results, as well as contacting any patient that’s going to get their treatment and making sure that they haven’t had any problems since the last time they had treatment.” On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Tonya travels to Decatur, caring for patients and administering their medications. “I hook them up either with an IV, or some patients have what’s called a port, which is just an implanted device that goes underneath their skin and connects to a vein. That way, we can just insert a needle there instead of trying to locate veins.

“We give the patients nausea medication before any chemo is given. Then, we start their treatment.
AUTO & UPHOLSTERY - CERAMIC TILE & GROUT CLEANING
“In our Fort Wayne office, we can treat as many as 50 in a day - sometimes more.” In Fort Wayne locations, a patient’s blood is drawn for lab work before the patient consults with one of the oncologists. Then, the patient is shown to a chemo chair, and medication is administered according to the patient’s lab results. At a clinic outside the office, the process is much faster since patient lab work is completed before the appointment. The patient’s chemo medications are mixed ahead of time, so the patient sees the doctor and is able to get started on an IV more quickly. Less waiting time adds to the convenience of these nearby clinics for both patients and their families.

“Sometimes the family will bring them, drop them off and be back in two or three hours to pick them up, and they’re done. This way, a husband or wife can drop the patient off and go to work, and then come back and get pick the patient up over lunch break. So, it’s not as inconvenient as having to drive up to Fort Wayne.”

Another benefit of these local clinics is the personal touch that may not be found in a larger treatment center. “The patients here get to know one nurse. In the Lutheran office, for example, we have three chemo rooms, and depending on which chemo room you are assigned, you may have a different nurse than you had the week before.” Tonya elaborates, “Here, you develop a deeper trust. When you walk in, you know who to expect. And, I think it calms people when they know it’s the same familiar faces every time they come in.” For Tonya, these patients are the best part of her job. “I enjoy just getting to know the patients, learning about who they are and about their families...what they enjoy. You learn about all those life events, so for the patient, it’s just like having a friend come over and talk with them.” Tonya admits that building these relationships can also be the most difficult part of her career. “The most challenging part of any nursing job is knowing that some patients don’t make it. We can’t save everybody, unfortunately, so it’s challenging because you do get to know the patients so well. They almost become part of your family, and you become like family to them.”

A New Challenge To Pursue Better Health
Clients’ Fitness and Healthier Living the Goal for Instructor Jennifer Thompson
Article by Holly Wuebker
F
itness has always been Jennifer Thompson’s mantra, even back in grade school. Her love for exercising and staying fit has led to the establishment of a new business in Fort Recovery, Ohio. With its grand opening just last month, Jeneration Fitness is a brand-new exercise studio, where Jen also promotes healthy living. Even though Jeneration Fitness is a new facility, the instructor is definitely not new to the fitness field.
Thanks to her mentor Polleen Faller, Jen started leading fitness classes as a teenager in Fort Recovery. Following high school, she attended Ball State University and graduated in 2002 with a Master’s of Science Degree in Exercise Physiology. Jen then moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where she was employed as a lifestyle management resort to assist others with eating right and exercising. Sometime later, she moved back to Ohio and found a job in Muncie but eventually ended up back in Fort Recovery.
WVL September 2014 / 41
Jen has many goals for Jeneration Fitness, and with certifications in kettlebell, Pilates, and weight management, she’s well on her way to providing a wide variety of opportunities. She wanted to be a fitness instructor, in general, “to reach different age groups and bring better health to the community.” Jeneration Fitness celebrated its grand opening last month with a free week of fitness classes.
Regular 45-minute fitness classes start in September, along with personal training, unlimited membership passes, small group fitness classes, and some specialty classes. According to Jen, “No matter what your age or fitness level, you can come in and work out at your level, set the goals you want,” and enjoy the results. Clients can also be measured and weigh in, if weight loss is a priority. There’s always a

variety of activities, so no matter which you choose, different muscle groups are challenged and you get better results faster. Kettlebell workouts are a new fitness sensation that Jen has introduced to the community. These exercises offer total body toning, and even the aerobic option, but they also can be a fun way to work out. POUND™ is another fitness class Jen hopes to add soon – an exciting way to involve rhythm and exercise in accomplishing one’s fitness goals. By using drumsticks and the body, you get a complete body workout in a class that passes by so quickly, it doesn’t feel like you’re exercising. One minute, you may be reaching high, tapping your sticks together, while the next, you could be squatting and hitting the floor, or maybe doing crunches on your back. Group challenges are another goal Jen has for the fitness classes at Jeneration Fitness. One week, the challenge may be drinking only water; another week, it could be cutting out all refined sugar for the week. Jen also hopes to involve area schools and sporting groups, offering fun activities for kids. Recently, during the Fort Recovery Jubilee, she sponsored a onemile fun run and activities for children. Jen addressed nutrition, and the kids were able to participate in a race, as well as an obstacle course. She handed out five-colored bracelets as a reminder to eat fruits and vegetables of those colors every day. Basically, the event showed that fitness can be fun and also gave parents some tips about clean eating. One of the leading health problems in our area is cancer, and by encouraging the use of chemical-free cleaners and personal care products and promoting healthy eating, Jen hopes that her clients can avoid cancer. “Fitness is shown to help,”

Jeneration Fitness offers a variety of allnatural cleaners, personal care items, and healthy foods. Some of Jen’s products include: Nerium AD, an anti-aging and skin firming cream; Norwex, microfiber cloth cleaners for the home that require only water; Wildtree, a line of foods, seasonings, sauces and breads with no preservatives or additives, as well as specialty items for those with food allergies; and, Young Living Essential Oils, which can be taken orally or diffused to help with any number of health issues. Jen would also like to host monthly workshops or seminars to educate clients about healthier living. Workshops on making homemade laundry detergent and hand soap or preparing freezer crockpot meals would offer helpful information to busy adults who wish to be healthier. Eating healthy and exercising is good for everyone, and as a busy mom of four, it provides Jen with more energy. She says her new job is “completely rewarding,” and she’s happy when someone walks away from the class having achieved their goals. Not only is Jennifer Thompson a fitness instructor, coach and entrepreneur; she’s also a positive influence, a role model, a motivator and above all, a lifelong enthusiast for staying healthy and active. As Jen’s oldest son Cooper says, “Mom, you are into this exercise stuff, and that’s cool.”
