AIM/PURPOSE The animation industry includes both large production companies and individuals working on small digital projects. Animation on all scales requires people with fresh, exciting ideas for new work, whilst larger companies will need individuals with specialist skills, such as storyboarding, or the evidence to prove that they can develop them. To have a successful career in animation requires, first of all, good drawing skills, as these are a key requisite to get into the industry. Second, it requires the ability to develop fresh ideas for content which will engage the chosen audience. Also, a good animator will take into account at all stages the role of animation as communication, whether this be for entertainment or information. It always aims to move beyond simply creating moving shapes on a screen.

THE ASSIGNMENT You will be taking on the role of a 2D animator tasked with creating a short animated extract to showcase your up and coming graphic novel.

Your Brief: To animate the actions from a minimum of 2 panels from your graphic novel.

You will need this to bring to life creating a short animation that is a minimum of 30 seconds long with a soundscape to accompany the animation, which could include vocals, sound effects and/or music.

Choice of Techniques: Traditional Cut-out stop frame paper animation that is photographed and digitised Digital Premiere/After Effects - Using digital artwork to create a digital stop motion/movement animation Other digital option – Flash Animation

Is it the same as your graphic novel or will you try to appeal to other audiences? You will want to think about: • Age • Gender • Interests/tastes • Viewing contexts – Where would you publish your animation and who could access it?

What is essential to animate your graphic novel?

• What part of your panel will you animate? Include your graphic novel artwork.

• Storyboarding the content of your animation – What will happen?!

• Consider all the movements that are needed and how you will keep continuity?

• What perspective/point of view will you use? Consider camera angles, shots and moments • What changes or extents of an action or movement will you need to include, think about how many frames per second you could use e.g how smooth do you want it to be?

• Will you include any titles, credits or written speech bubbles/ narration?

• Soundscape design, what sounds do you need and how will it support the visuals?

You will need to show the design process of your animation. What imagery you will use from your graphic novel, what is the narrative and how you will make it all move?

Producing Your Animation (P3, M3, D3) You will need to continue to evidence your project by keeping a log documenting your personal technical and creative ability.

You will need to evidence how you have applied your planning into your animation via a log.

Cover the production process, software use (imagery and audio) e.g order of artwork, transitions, edits, movements, use of text, synching of audio and imagery, exporting, publishing etc to show how your animation has come together. Keep watching your work regularly to see your progress and how you can improve upon it.

Evaluating Your Animation (P4, M4, D4) Peer Review and Evaluation - Share your final animation for peer review to gain feedback.

You will need to develop questionnaires for people to complete, collect the results and examine responses, then evaluate your animation yourself. You will need to comment on peoples’ responses and if necessary respond to any critical feedback in your own evaluation
