FERRAN PARK ENHANCEMENTS CONTINUE

CHAMBER BREAKFAST Sponsored by: City of Eustis

EUSTIS COMMUNITY CENTER, 601 NORTHSHORE DR., EUSTIS

Thank you to Epiphany Celebration Anglican Church for sponsoring our December breakfast.

Phase three improvements to Ferran Park are set to begin early in 2016 and will include a splash pad near the pool. The splash pad is set to be open before the end of 2016. However, The City of Eustis Public Works Department reminds residents that it is an active construction site and to use caution and obey all signage in the area. Future Park improvements are addressed in the City’s Ferran Park Master Plan which states, “The purpose of this plan is to allow for the integration and connection of the redesigned Ferran Park with the remaining open spaces along Lake Eustis to create a unified public waterfront. The end product will showcase a thriving waterfront community that can be enjoyed by visitors and citizens alike.”

CLASSIC TENTS AND EVENTS Turns the Ordinary into the Extraordinary

By Renee Garrison

Nan Cobb never has a dull day at work. “At Classic Tents & Events we do anything from backyard barbecues, birthday parties, Quinceaneras, Hindu religious functions, Christenings, family reunions, weddings and funerals,” she says. “No event is too small or too large. From 10-foot tents to 8,000-square-foot tents, we literally have you covered.” In addition the company offers tables, chairs, linens, staging, lighting, champagne fountains, custom centerpieces and many ancillary items to compliment your event. Does she ever receive unusual requests? “We did a Spiderman wedding a month ago,” Nan says, laughing. Is there any event that stands out as a company favorite? “Chamber Galas are always lovely,” she says. “We pay a lot of attention to the details and try to create events that are very different. Angie Luce really runs this business. I couldn’t do it without such a great staff.” Though Nan opened Classic Tents & Events eight years ago, her employees have over 30 years of combined experience in the tent business. That experience tells them that there is no short cut to safety and quality. Nothing is left to chance. They triple check their work to make sure that every tent is safe and secure. “I started out by helping a friend with his tent and rental company,” she admits. “That’s how I learned the business.” A firm believer in community involvement, Nan is a member of The Florida Federation of Fairs, ARA (American Rental Association), Eustis, Southlake, and Leesburg Chamber of Commerce, Leesburg Partnership. “My belief is not what the Chamber can do for me, but what can I do for the Chamber,” she explains. “It’s a wonderful way to get involved in your community. When you join the 6 [ TheConnection

Chamber of Commerce, it really validates your business. It means that you’re here to stay.” For more information, contact Nan Cobb at Classic Tents and Events, 352-357-7920 or visit the website, “http://www. ClassicTentsEvents.com” www.ClassicTentsEvents.com.

VETERINARIAN/CLIENT/PATIENT RELATIONSHIP By Dr. Tracie Wilson, DVM

OK – you call your vet on Friday night at 4:55. You just got home from work and when you walk Fido, you see him straining to urinate – he must have a urinary tract infection. You need some antibiotics for him…quick before the weekend. And would you believe the lady that answers the phone says “I am sorry – the doctor will not be able to prescribe any medications until we get Fido in for an exam and we can check his urine. The doctor has not seen Fido in over 12 months.” You explain how

You’re a

the doc has been your vet for years and you’ve been meaning to get Fido in for his check-up, but time just got away, and Fido needs those antibiotics or he will really be going to the emergency room over the weekend.” The nice lady firmly says” NO.” At which point you lose your temper and blow up, telling that money-grubbing, selfish, uncaring, lady that you will be taking your business elsewhere. You call another office and tell them all Fido’s woes and how rotten your old vet is…and they ask you to bring Fido for a check-up! BEFORE THE DOC WILL PRESCIBE! VCPR (as defined in Fla

Statute 474.202, 474.214) is the veterinarian/client/ patient relationship. VCPR is further defined in the section of Administrative Rules: 61G18-30.001, F.A.C. (Excerpt) “The documented patient/client/veterinarian relationship cited in Section 474.214, F.S. is herein defined as a veterinarian’s record of a client’s animal which documents that the veterinarian has seen the animal in a professional capacity within a period of 12 months or less.” It is the law – I did not write it… but do not ask me to break it!

If Dr. Suess were a vet………. I won’t dispense it, Sam I am. I won’t dispense without exam. I won’t dispense it to your dog, Although you bash me in a blog. I won’t dispense it to your friend, Who yells at me without end. I won’t dispense it for the ear, For the eyes, or for the rear. I won’t dispense it thought you yell, How mean I am, the world you’ll tell. I won’t dispense it to your cat, To your bird, or to your rat. I won’t give in - I’m standing tall. Although you’ll whine and cry and call. I won’t dispense it, Sam I am, You can’t have meds without exams! ~Author Unknown

Lake Eustis Area Chamber of Commerce pleased to present GeorgeFest 2016 – “Proud To Be An American” By Chamber Staff

EUSTIS, Florida – 2016 marks the 114th consecutive annual celebration of GeorgeFest, the 2nd oldest festival celebrating George Washington’s Birthday in the nation and the longest running festival of any kind in Florida. Sponsored by the Lake Eustis Chamber of Commerce and our proud partner, the City of Eustis, the festival is an important piece of living, local history. The theme of this year’s festival is “Proud to be an American” and is scheduled for February 26th – 28th. HISTORY OF GEORGEFEST EVENT GeorgeFest is the longest running festival celebrating George Washington’s birthday in the state of Florida and the second longest running festival in the country second only to Laredo, TX. 2016 marks the 114th consecutive annual celebration in Eustis. No other city in Florida has as long-standing a tradition of a patriotic celebration in honor of America’s founding Father. It all began rather inconspicuously: It centered around the Ocklawaha House, the oldest hotel in the area, on which construction began in 1876. When the hotel built by A.S. Pendry, a major attraction to tourists, was enlarged between 1902 and 1907, something other than the additional east wing was added. Residents decided to show their appreciation for their visitors by hosting a holiday on Feb 22, 1902 (some dressed as early pioneers, while others as local native tribesman, to produce a pageant of the state’s early history). 10 [ TheConnection

While the format for the annual celebration, held on the day of George Washington’s birthday in 1732, changed constantly, several things remained the same. First, the festival always attracted a crowd, and not just from those staying at the hotel. People from neighboring villages and towns would make the trip into town for the festivities. From a simple parade of bicycles and Model T’s, decorated with red, white and blue bunting, and a few other units on unpaved roads, the festival has grown in size and scope. Over the years, GeorgeFest has gone from a one-day event to one that has spanned several weeks, in the recent past. Attendance has grown from the original handful of locals to thousands of eager and patriotic fun seekers. The main theme has never changed over the 114 years since its inception- simply to have fun. WHAT IS GEORGEFEST? Sponsored by the Lake Eustis Chamber of Commerce and our proud partner, the City of Eustis, the festival is an important piece of living, local history. GeorgeFest 2016 promises to be full of fun and family entertainment, as it has been for the last 113 years! Come out and take part with pride in a triumphant celebration of our heroes, America’s founding Father, George Washington, and all that America stands for.

WHY GEORGEFEST? In the late 1870s, Senator Steven Wallace Dorsey (R-Arkansas) proposed the unprecedented idea of adding “citizen” Washington’s birth date, February 22, to the four existing bank holidays previously approved in 1870. In 1879 the Forty-fifth Congress deemed George Washington’s birth date, February 22, a historic date worthy of holiday recognition. Washington was a man of his time: a farmer, and a soldier. Named commander-in-chief of the American Continental army, he led the colonies to victory over England, securing independence for an infant nation. His political leadership led to his election as president of the 1787 Constitutional Convention. Once the states ratified the Constitution, he was elected the first President of the United States, completing two terms. Everything about George Washington was entwined with the evolution of a young nation. His name was associated with virtue, honesty, strength, courage, and patriarchal leadership. Schools, bridges, towns, the national capital, and even a state were named in his honor. The federal holiday, Washington’s Birthday, honors the accomplishments of the man who has been referred to, for over two centuries, as “The Father of his Country”. Celebrated for his leadership in the founding of the nation, he was the Electoral

College’s unanimous choice to become the first President; he was seen as a unifying force for the new republic and set an example for future holders of the office. The holiday also pays tribute to the general who created the first military badge of merit for the common soldier. Revived on Washington’s 200th birthday in 1932, the Purple Heart recognizes injuries received in battle. Like Memorial Day and Veterans Day, Washington’s Birthday weekend offers another opportunity to honor the country’s veterans. ACTIVITIES In the weeks leading to the festival, several activities will be offered, including: February 6, 2016 – USO Dance February 13, 2016- Running of the Georges 5k Additional schedule of events to come as some items are still in the planning stages Carnival • Parade • Fireworks • Food, and craft vendors • Button drawing • Live entertainment • Annual GeorgeFest Chamber Breakfast • Queen and King Coronation Patriotic storefront contest Please contact Christie Bobbitt at (352) 357-3434 or cbobbitt@eustischamber.org for more information.

Freckles are a basic result of sun damage, caused by the ultraviolet rays from the sun. Melanocytes become enlarged and over-active, eventually enlarging to the point they show up on our skin as brown spots or freckles. Over time they continue to enlarge into what our mothers refer to as liver spots or age spots. However they have nothing to do with your liver or your age - well maybe they do have something to do with age, as the sun damage accumulates over time. The sun gives off UVB and UVA rays. UVB are the burning rays, while the UVA rays are the aging rays. They are the long rays that penetrate deep into the dermis. Not only do they damage the melanocytes and cause freckles, but the UVA rays also destroy collagen and elastin which leads to wrinkles and sagging. Some people may have a genetic predisposition for these problems but the sun is the key stimulator for everyone and is the reason why freckles are more prominent in the summer. Once these darkened tissue areas appear, they are permanent. Unless treated, they will only get darker and darker with continued sun exposure. Have you tried everything and nothing seems to work? Do you have a grave yard drawer of promised and failed products? Well stop throwing good money at false promises. Rodan & Fields products are developed to correct sun damage and have a 60 day empty container money back guarantee‌ Has any other product ever given you that? TIME FOR SOME NEW YEAR’S (FINANCIAL) RESOLUTIONS By Eric V. Blamick

Right now, you might be mulling over some New Year’s resolutions, such as hitting the gym more or learning a new language. These are worthy goals, but why not add some financial resolutions as well? For example, pay yourself first. Each month, before you pay all your other bills, have some money automatically moved from your checking or savings account into an investment. Here’s another resolution: Take full advantage of your 401(k) or other retirement plan. Put in as much as you afford and choose an investment mix that gives you the growth potential you’ll need to reach your objectives. Also, commit yourself to focusing on the long term. Don’t

take a “time out” from the investment world in response to short-term events, such as scary headlines or the ups and downs of the market. Finally, strive to cut down on your debts. The lower your debt load, the more money you’ll have to invest. By making these financial resolutions – and sticking to them – you can make 2016 a milestone year in your quest to achieve your financial goals. For more information, please contact Eric V. Blamick, Financial Advisor with Edward Jones, “tel:352-357-2204” \t “_blank” 352-357-2204 or email him at “mailto:eric. blamick@edwardjones.com” \t “_blank” eric.blamick@ edwardjones.com. [ CHARITY SPOTLIGHT ] Sponsored By The Lake Eustis Area Chamber of Commerce

THE AMAZING RACE FOR CHARITY By Tim Totten

The Amazing Race for Charity, which annually raises more than $20,000 for more than 10 local charities, pits teams of two on a 5-6 mile journey across a Lake County community. Along the way, teams complete 20 challenge stations that may be as simple as solving a puzzle or reciting Miranda Rights to as difficult as building a 2-person tent or rappelling off a tower. While the race attracts serious adventure racers, the obstacles and terrain are designed for all skill levels. At the end of the day, racers have learned a little more about the host city, enjoyed an amazing workout, participated as a team and, in some cases, worked with other teams to complete a challenge. Gathered in the park for the Finish Line

Festival at the end of the race, participants and volunteers trade smiles and laughs about the day’s challenges, knowing that their wild day has also benefited worthy local charities. The 2016 event, scheduled for April 9th in Eustis, will attract more than 500 racers from all over the country to complete wacky challenges at local schools, churches, parks and businesses. The 5-person race committee directs 20 sponsors and more than 300 volunteers to create a memorable day. LAKE PREMIERE WELLNESS ACUPUNCTURE AND ORIENTAL MEDICINE By Renee Garrison

After a year of suffering through tests and medications to treat her digestive problems, Kathy Thomas tried Oriental medicine. “It worked for me in such a short time,” Kathy says. “I knew I wanted to help others in the same way I had been helped.” Today, Kathy is an Acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner. A graduate of Florida College of Integrative Medicine, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Health Studies and a Master’s Degree in Oriental Medicine. Kathy opened her own practice in Eustis four years ago to offer safe, effective and all-natural health and wellness care to Central Florida residents. Her patients range in age from 18 to 94. With a particular interest in women’s health and fertility, as well as digestive, sleep and mood disorders, Kathy specializes in custom herbal prescriptions. In addition, her acupuncture treatments work towards reaching the root cause of patient symptoms, as well as the symptoms themselves. Though she is a sole practitioner, Kathy currently shares space at Bay Street Wellness with Drs. Besuden and Cooper, an esthetician and three massage therapists. “I grew up in Leesburg and always considered Lake County to be home,” Kathy says. When not seeing patients or helping to educate the public about how Chinese medicine helps the body to heal itself, Kathy enjoys participating in Eustis Chamber events. “It’s a great way to meet new people,” she says. “The group is big enough that it’s always changing. I’m all about small, locally-owned businesses.”
