The new guidelines, part of a new federal policy, will require Medicare patients to be screened before admittance into the hospital. Minimal effect is expected for the majority of Medicare patients. Of the current 1,500 Medicare patients about 60 could be affected. However, according to Hospital Administrator John Mitchell, “No Medicare patients will be turned away from the Eugene City Hospital when medical attention is indicated.” An admissions nurse will conduct an examination to determine if the patient meets one criterion from each of two lists. List one, severity of illness, consists of checking vital signs, blood lab, blood pressure, functional impairment and physical findings. While list two, intensity of service, evaluates the type of assistance needed: monitoring, medications and procedures. For those that may be affected by the new guidelines, Eugene City Hospital provides a number of alternative care options. First, a Medicare-funded, home health care program is available upon request. Secondly, for those patients who may be terminally ill, a hospice care is also accessible. Lastly, a discharge planning service is available to all patients to help prepare a home care plan. -More-
