What Moves You

Dear Friends, At Lourdes Health Network, our Mission guides everything we do, from the overarching objectives of strategic planning and finding ways to address longstanding community healthcare needs to the daily interactions we have with patients and their family members that typify the Lourdes spirit of caring. In this issue, you can learn about several exciting examples of our Mission in action. One is our new Joint & Spine Center, designed specifically to support patients as they work to regain mobility and quality of life following joint replacement surgery or other orthopedic treatments. The specialized care and expertise these patients need is available in one convenient location. These pages also include updates on the great efforts of our Foundation donors, sponsors, volunteers and employees, plus exciting news about the opening of our new Mental Health Crisis Triage Center. Finally, we would like you to learn more about Maria Castillo, a registered nurse practitioner, who is now working at Lourdes West Pasco Family Medicine. Sincerely,

John Serle, FACHE President and CEO

What M The new Joint & Spine Center at Lourdes Medical Center has one goal: to get people moving again.

WHEN ARTHRITIS OR an orthopedic injury limits range of motion in the spine or joints, a healthy, active lifestyle becomes more difficult to achieve. The Lourdes Joint & Spine Center combines advanced treatments with coordinated, personalized care to help patients complete their journey back to orthopedic health. Getting You to Point B (and Beyond) Whatever your orthopedic needs, the Joint & Spine Center offers a comprehensive menu of treatments and services from initial diagnosis to surgical rehabilitation and recovery. Care begins with Lourdes’ team of orthopedic surgeons, who evaluate patients and collaborate with the rest of the orthopedic care team to develop individualized treatment plans. The Joint & Spine Center specializes in advanced surgical treatments, including total hip replacement, partial and total knee replacement, and surgeries to correct problems in the foot, ankle, hand, wrist, shoulder, elbow, spine and neck. Every year, more orthopedic procedures are performed at Lourdes Medical Center than at any other area hospital.

the hospital’s physical and occupational therapists provide seamless care throughout a patient’s recovery process. The dedicated orthopedic unit offers a specialized approach to recovery for orthopedic surgery patients. The stateof-the-art unit includes all-private rooms and a dedicated orthopedic nursing, rehabilitation and case management team. The unit also features an orthopedic rehabilitation gym with equipment tailored to meet the unique needs of patients who have undergone orthopedic surgery. The orthopedic unit’s all-private rooms are designed to allow patients

to recover in the privacy and comfort of their own space. This individualized approach to recovery encourages patients to participate more actively in their own rehabilitation, which can lead to faster recovery times and better post-surgical outcomes. “The breadth of services and expertise offered at the Joint & Spine Center is unrivaled in the Mid-Columbia region,” Denise says. “Patients can be assured they’re receiving the best orthopedic and rehabilitative care possible.” To learn more about the Joint & Spine Center or to speak with an orthopedic nurse, call (509) 542-3026.

suites are the largest suites in the area and feature computer-navigated joint replacement technology. Most patients scheduled for or considering surgery are enrolled in our Orthopedic Academy. This one-hour class answers many questions patients commonly have about the surgery itself and details what patients can expect during the recovery process. The academy provides an opportunity for patients to meet their personal orthopedic care team including the program’s physical therapist, a critical member of the care team who follows each patient all the way through the process and is available to answer any follow-up questions patients may have. Our commitment to coordinated care results in a patient experience that feels seamless and uncomplicated. Patients are surrounded by familiar faces throughout the entire course of their treatment and know what to expect at every stage of care. “We offer patients a concierge-style experience each step of the way,” says Denise Clapp, Chief Nursing Officer at Lourdes. “This experience is rooted in the highest quality of patient care from a compassionate staff of surgeons, nurses and therapists who are committed to getting patients back on their feet.”

Our Mission In 2013, Lourdes Foundation Board raised more than $620,000—funds that will be used to advance Lourdes Health Network’s Mission of serving the Pacific Northwest with respect, compassion and care.

THE YEAR’S SUCCESSES INCLUDE: Lourdes Legacy Breakfast In January 2013, 240 guests made the 7th Annual Lourdes Legacy Breakfast a smashing success. Sponsored by Washington Trust Bank, the annual breakfast, held at the Pasco Red Lion Hotel, raised more than $36,000 that will be used to purchase new therapy equipment and support the expansion of therapy services. Putting for a Cause The 22nd Annual Lourdes Classic on July 12 featured 18 holes of golf, a catered lunch and dinner, and special prizes and competitions throughout the day at Canyon Lakes Golf Course. The event raised more than $37,000, which was used to buy state-of-the-art diagnostic pulmonology equipment, including pulse oximeters. Partnering for Success with Community Support Lourdes gratefully acknowledges the support of generous community groups that hosted events to help further our Mission. •H ealed with a Kiss organizers Franki Anderson and Michelle Lourdes Wallin hosted an Foundationafternoon garden supported mammogram party with live music, events help more than 100 shopping, a silent auction and wine tasting uninsured women in our that raised $X,XXX. During the 2013 employee United Way Campaign, 389 Lourdes employees raised more than $83,000 to benefit the free mammography program; a Children’s Day Program for school-age children with mental illness; Lourdessponsored scholarships for community members pursuing healthcare careers; and Helping Hands, an internal program designed to support Lourdes employees in need. Grants and In-Kind Donations Benefit the Community Grant funding of $463,229 directly benefits several Lourdes programs for people in need in the Tri-Cities community. United Way funds support the Children’s Day Program for children with mental illnesses and vocation guidance to help adults with mental challenges find employment. In-kind donations support Project Warm-Up, which gives replacement clothing and duffle bags filled with basic necessities and care products for homeless men and women who come to Lourdes for emergency medical care. Taste of Lourdes Thanks to the Foundation’s 23 dedicated board members, Taste of Lourdes, a dinner event hosted by a volunteer community member, returned after a hiatus. Board members acted as servers during the event, and the $13,000 raised in 2013 contributed to the host’s Lourdes program of choice. The Lourdes Foundation has raised a total of $620,729 this fiscal year, including $463,229 in grant funds, $127,500 from donations and hosted or third-party events, plus approximately $30,000 in in-kind donations. LOCATED AT LOURDES Counseling Center, the Mental Health Crisis Triage Center is a $2.1 million project designed to provide a place where people experiencing mental health emergencies can find the treatment they need. “We will be filling a gap that exists in acute mental health care for our community,” says Tim Hoekstra, Director of Outpatient Services for Lourdes Counseling Center. “The Crisis Triage Center will be a residential treatment facility that will work with patients who are having a psychiatric emergency yet who do not meet inpatient treatment criteria.” Compared with other states, Washington has the least number of inpatient psychiatric beds per 1,000 residents. For the mentally ill, this can mean treatment risks being rushed to accommodate the needs of more patients or is never started at all because no beds are available.

“When we can treat people at a lower level of care in the Mental Health Crisis Triage Center, long-term inpatient beds can be opened up in one of two ways,” Tim says. “Patients can come in for voluntary treatment and prevent hospitalization. Alternatively, patients who are transitioning from inpatient care—yet still need observation—can come to the Mental Health Crisis Triage Center, where they can receive the care they need during a shorter period of inpatient care.” To contact the Lourdes Counseling Center, call (509) 943-9104.

One in four families will have a family member who experiences a mental health condition that requires help. That’s no different in the Tri-Cities community than anywhere else. We want the community to know that it’s OK to seek help at the Mental Health Crisis Triage Center—that’s what we’ll be there for.” —TIM HOEKSTRA, DIRECTOR OF OUTPATIENT SERVICES FOR LOURDES COUNSELING CENTER

We polled representatives of the support system in our community—the department of human services, local jails and law enforcement, hospitals, the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and patient advocates—about where patients went when inpatient beds were full. What we learned led to the realization that people had no place to go before the Mental Health Crisis Triage Center.” —BARBARA MEAD, RN, VICE PRESIDENT OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH AND PHYSICIANS CLINICS

LourdesLiving Message from Sister Esther: Lourdes takes seriously Jesus’ exhortation that whatever we do to those who are vulnerable, we do for him (Matt 25:40).

The new Lourdes Mental Health Crisis Triage Center will open in July 2014 to serve the Tri-Cities community.

A Dream

Fulfilled

MARIA CASTILLO, RN, MN, CPN, FNP-BC, learned the value of service at a young age. “My mother impressed upon me that there were others beyond our little home who needed health care and hope,” Maria recalls. “Those words propelled my desire to become a nurse, and now a provider, and I am honored to be part of the Lourdes faith-based healthcare team in our community.” Maria’s career began at Lourdes as a certified nursing assistant before she continued on to a university in Oklahoma to earn her nursing degree. She has served in adult and pediatric intensive care units in Oklahoma and Olympia, Wash., for 16 years before returning to the Tri-Cities with her husband and children in 2006. With a desire to raise her family in her home community, she resumed her career at Lourdes and began her nurse practitioner training at Washington State University Tri-Cities. “Once again, Lourdes supported my vision of becoming a family nurse practitioner, and I am grateful,” Maria says. “Now, in collaboration with the caring nurses and experienced medical staff, we are inspiring people every day toward better living!” Mission accomplished! Maria provides care for patients of all ages which includes preventive health screenings, well-child checkups, physical exams, diabetes and hypertension management, and sports physicals. She spends some of her spare time teaching nursing at Washington State University Tri-Cities, preparing students to live their dreams, as she is. To schedule an appointment at Lourdes West Pasco Family Medicine, call (509) 416-8888.

For one Tri-Cities community native, caring for patients as a registered nurse practitioner at Lourdes West Pasco Family Medicine means living her Mission— and ours.

We are inspiring people every day toward better living!” —MARIA CASTILLO, RN, MN, CPN, FNP-BC

Message from Sister Esther: For more than 97 years, Lourdes has been blessed to have dedicated and excellent providers and

caregivers serving the healthcare needs of the dear neighbor in our community in the tradition of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.
