WOOD LIGHT YEAR: 2013 DESIGNER: 13&9 PRODUCER: XTEC

This project by 13&9, a designer duo working in Graz, unites traditional Austrian cabinet making with modern design and the latest LED technology. It is fascinating alone as an object for its decorative, sculptural appearance. But when lit, additional qualities unfold in the soft, evenly dispersed light and the translucent veneer brings out the natural beauty of the wood grain.

DESIGN FOR THE REAL WORLD YEAR: 1971 AUTHOR: VICTOR PAPANEK PUBLISHER: ACADEMY CHICAGO PUBLISHERS

Design for the Real World was written by the Vienna-born designer Victor Papanek. Together with Nomadic Furniture (illustrated by James Hennessey, US) these two books have become classics of the DIY culture and cornerstones of ecological design. There is scarcely another book on design theory that has come to be used as a standard text in so many design schools as Design for the Real World. It would also be difficult to find another book that has lost none of its relevance in over 40 years. At a time when design, consumption, and ecology did not yet appear to be at odds with one another, Victor Papanek scrutinized the irresponsible consequences and the absurdity of the goods being manufactured in the modern world.

TOOLS FOR DESIGN REVOLUTION YEAR: 2014 AUTHOR: IDRV/HARALD GRUENDL, MARCO KELLHAMMER, CHRISTINA NĂ„GELE PUBLISHER: NIGGLI

The book Tools for the Design Revolution is the result of a joint initiative in 2012 between the Institute for Design Research Vienna (IDRV) and designaustria. It reveals how many scarcely noticed everyday objects have an enormous negative impact on the environment. Still, not only problems and negative examples are presented here. The book also offers practical tips for designers, businesses, and consumers on how to lead a more mindful and environmentally friendly life. According to the IDRV, the solution to our ecological problems lies in the global solidarity of a sustainable society.

JEAN II DE ROUBAIX YEAR: 2013 DESIGNER: SASCHA MIKEL, MARTIN SCHNABL, MICHAEL TATSCHL PRODUCER: BREADED ESCALOPE

This object was created as part of Breaded Escalope’s project Love me Bender. The project by the Vienna-based Carinthian designers is driven by an archaic DIY aesthetic and an interest in reducing to a technical minimum processes, such as the one initiated by Thonet for bending wood, that are now industrialized. Their bentwood kitchen workshop consists largely of a galvanized pipe into which beechwood is shoved and a kettle heated on a hotplate to produce steam. The steaming makes the wood flexible and able to be bent into form. Michael Thonet probably did not do it much differently when he laid the foundation for the legend of Thonet bentwood furniture over 150 years ago. W W W. B R E A D E D E S C A L O P E . C O M

The work of Célia and Hannes, who commute between France and Austria, is characterised by a combination of experimental approaches and a design theory background. Emissaire is a collection of 10 individual glass objects which have no other purpose than simply to be beautiful and inspire. Their shapes prompt the creation of imaginary landscapes, and an attempt to form a balanced arrangement with them turns into a meditative game. The moulds come from the archives of the CIAV – Meisenthal. The objects are hand blown and individually coloured.

Since 2011 they have made trips throughout Europe and to New York with their mobile kitchen, table, and stools in order to invite random passers-by to share a meal. Folded up, the entire kitchen, table, and up to 12 stools fit onto a single EUR-pallet, which makes transporting them over long distances affordable. The example on exhibit here was made by the traditional Styrian furniture company KAPO/NWW. The model in white has been produced in a limited edition of 25.

These vases are the result of a collaboration between the Vienna-based designer Marco Dessí and the nearly 300-year-old porcelain manufacturer Augarten. The objects were commissioned by the Vienna Design Week within the framework of their so-called ‘Passionswege’. In this format contemporary designers come together with classical Viennese artisan enterprises with the object of enriching each other’s work. On the one hand, the diverse forms in this vase series correspond to prototypes made by the porcelain manufacturer. On the other hand, unusual forms arise

as a result of the designer’s having left on the upper rim, which is normally cut off, so that the production process would be visible in the end product. The Augarten logo, which is customarily stamped small on the underside of an object, serves here instead as a dominant graphic pattern as well as a decorative element and, despite its age and tradition, lends the vase a modern appearance. The colour, which is otherwise applied by hand to perfection, in this case has been intuitively sprayed onto the entire surface, again highlighting the production process.

Like many other chairs, this one is made of birch plywood. However, for most of the common seats and backrests, the plywood is pressed into moulds to create the curved forms and is then glued together. For the Prater Chair, by contrast, the final shapes are CNC-milled from rather thick sheets of plywood. The result is that the layers, which are bonded together with a phenolic glue, produce a chance pattern that lends the

The internationally known, Vienna-based designers mischer’traxler have devoted themselves to production processes and the more experimental aspects of design. The lamps and benches in the series Idea of a Tree are produced with a machine built by the designers themselves that only produces one-of-a-kinds. This apparent contradiction is simply explained in that the machine is powered by a solar cell which has an additional parameter; namely, the amount of sunlight. If there is more sun, the individual layers wound on are thicker and paler in colour. That means that

The seat shells presented here were built as prototypes for the Austrian House L.I.S.I. at the US Solardecathlon 2013 in California. Another project that takes up the legacy of the world-renowned Thonet company, with its long and rich tradition, is chair 107 by Robert Stadler. This Paris-based Austrian designer has succeeded in creating a piece of Thonet furniture that clearly displays its heritage. In form, it borrows heavily from the classic 214 (the name 107 is no accident). Even so, it is obviously a piece of modern coffee house or bistro furniture, in terms of both form and construction – definitely an object that has filled a long-time void in Thonet’s product portfolio.

POLKAPOTS POLKA AUSTRIA

POLKAPOTS YEAR: 2006 DESIGNER: POLKA/MONICA SINGER, MARIE RAHM PRODUCER: RIESS/VIENNA DESIGN WEEK

The Vienna-based designers POLKA were commissioned by the Vienna Design Week as part of the ‘Passionswege’ programme to work together on a project with the classical enamelware producer Riess. The result was a conceptual collection of ‘kitchen mutants’. Pots and long and loop handles produced by Riess were rearranged; and although the resulting objects have something familiar about them because of the common forms used, somehow we are left with a bitter aftertaste and a hint of Frankenstein’s attic.

VIENNA BIKE YEAR: 2011 DESIGNER: VALENTIN VODEV PRODUCER: VALENTIN VODEV

The Vienna Bike is a creation of the designer Valentin Vodev, who is based in Vienna. It is a city bike that can be loaded with up to 150 litres or 40 kg of goods, which is more than a shopping trolley or the boots of many small cars can handle. To conserve the rider’s energy, the pedals are electrically assisted. It takes 3 hours to charge, which lasts for up to 60 km. An innovative suspension system improves the riding comfort and also allows the rider to lean into the curves as if it were a normal bike.

CARDBOARD CLOCK YEAR: 2010 DESIGNER: VANDASYE/GEORG SCHNITZER, PETER UMGEHER PRODUCER: VANDASYE

The designers Vandasye are based in Vienna and enjoy being involved with self-production. Simple materials, laser cutting, and 3D printing are important media for them. The clock exhibited here is constructed from a single piece of laser-cut cardboard. The upper part is attached through a single slot in the base, which forms a solid stand. The hands, created with 3D printing, and a finished Junghans clockwork round out the clean aesthetics and make the clock tick.
