Honolulu Honolulu is the capital and the most populous city of Hawaii, being also the main port. In the Hawaiian language, Honolulu means “sheltered bay” or “place of shelter”. It’s located in the island of Oahu being the commercial center with restaurants, shopping centers, coffee shops, hotels and many turistic choices. Honolulu is the most populous state capital relative to state population. Honolulu is also the historical center where there’s still the presence of memories of the old Hawaiian monarchy, chinatown and an active fish market. With amazing beaches, a lot of sun and surf, Honolulu it’s one of the most wanted destinations to go on holidays, on honeymoon or to surf in the best waves on the planet. The Waikiki beach it’s the most known and visited by tourists. Hawaii is not only known by its fine weather and by the great landscape, it’s also a symbol of culture, history, outdoor activities and an active nightlife. Besides the beaches, the outdoor activities, the hiking on the mountains, the plantations of pineapples and the volcanos, etc, in Honolulu it’s also located the famous lagoon harbour, the United States Navy deep-water naval base, Pearl Harbour. After all of what we know from Hawaii and the whole world knows what Hawaii have to offer, let’s find out what more can we see over there that’s not so known, obvious or easy to find. Malie Kai Chocolates Hawaii is the only U.S. state with the tropical conditions to cultivate cacao. In recent years the demand has raised chocolate production, bringing with it a new breed of chocolatiers focused on small-batch, sustainable processes. Malie Kai Chocolates makes an assortment of limited-quantity bars, handling each step of production from harvest to processing. The region's richly fertile soil yields only a small quantity of cacao, making its single-estate chocolates some of the rarest in the world. Stir up your next cocktail with a cane sugar stick farmed on Oahu. The naturally sweetened swizzle sticks of Hula Girl Foods are farmed and packaged on the island of Oahu. The thin slices of pure sugar cane are a nice addition to our favorite cocktail, but they can also be used as skewers on the grill. The family-owned company has been producing their versatile sugar cane products for more than 25 years.

Why it is Cool? Using pure sugar cane, natural and local, they produce a variety of products, that can be used on drinks (cocktails, tea and coffee, amongst others) or can also be used on meals (chopsticks, skewers on the grill, etc.). Transparents Street Signs Cayetano Ferrer is an artist from Honolulu that provides a bizarre take on the regulation of traffic and urban activity. As they are transparent designs, passerby’s get a chance to apprehend the cautionary messages displayed while still remaining aware of the buildings and natural settings that lie behind the placards. This artist has remained committed to the problems presented by spatial dislocation, especially those brought about by architectural structures. There's Hawaiian print shirts and shorts and the newest way to replicate the easy-going nature of the Honolulu style is to don the HUF Parrot Volley cap. The hat is the company's latest venture in their lineup of red-hot skate and street style products and features five-panel construction that makes for a comfy and loose fit. The nylon strap in the back, however, keeps the cap securely in place even in the most blustery of conditions. The red, printed number is constructed from lightweight fabric and has incorporated the use of metal grommets to allow the head to breathe and keep cool. Why it is Cool? We always get used to see and we’re very intimate with the Hawaiian prints on shorts and shirts. This hat of HUF is a complement to the kit that symbolizes the relaxed Hawaiian lifestyle. What about doing some surf vacations? But even making the trip to Hawaii can't ensure perfect weather to hit the waves. Hotel Sheraton in Waikiki has the first surf simulator of the World, the Tsunami Surf Simulator. Ideal conditions for surfing are always present though with the surf simulator at the Sheraton hotel. The game lets hotel guests ride virtual waves on a live board any day, at any time, regardless of outside weather. We've got to worry about sharks, and we've got to worry about the reef and there’s some people that can’t make it out the real waves of Oahu but with this simulator people can enjoy the adrenaline rush of surfing. It takes the fear out of actually going out into the water and really creates a safe environment for people to participate. Why it is Cool? Going to Hawaii and surfing its famous waves it’s not for everyone. It’s only for those who know, of course!, and for adventurers. People that don’t know how to surf also have the right to have that experience and this simulator it’s an excelent choice. We can experience, even virtually, the adrenaline rush of surfing without worrying with sharks or the reefs. In 2004, the multi talented artist started printing up T-shirts to promote his record label Flip The Bird. The clothing line spread like wildfire gaining such large appeal that his chic upscale T-shirts have reached the backs of Kanye West, Redman, Method Man, and has fostered collaborations with hip hop mogul Russell Simmons and Rasheed Young. Why it is Cool? With the variety of products getting bigger and bigger it’s needed to bring something new, something different from the usual and that makes the difference. Being a hip-hop artistand a clothing designer, Tassho is able to create some irreverent, colorful shoes with a fantastic design. Designed by San Diego company Modern Home Studios, this Star Wars home theater is a dramatically awesome sci-fi themed room that would easily turn any movie into a cinematic experience. In addition to a 107-inch Stewart Filmscreen, the theater also features life-sized talking C-3PO and R2D2 robots, a ceiling chalked full of fiber optics, and a motorized door that operates just like the one from the movies. Salty air conditioning!

The Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning LLC has embarked on a $240 million project to cool half of the buildings in downtown Honolulu using super cold seawater pumped from the ocean. By sucking up water through a pipeline running hundreds of feet below the sea, the company will be able to discharge the cold seawater through air conditioning units around Honolulu. The project stands to reduce the electricity used in the city's air conditioned buildings by up to 75 percent, as well as cut carbon emissions and the use of refrigerants that contribute to ozone depletion. After chilling the whole buildings, warmed sea water is returned to the ocean through another pipe and diffuser located at a shallower depth. Why it is Cool? Using a natural resource and without causing any damage to its natural habitat and to the environment, this company from Honolulu take advantage of seawater to chill the buildings from dowtown. In a natural and sustainable way launched an innovator and ambicious project that will also allow to reduce the electricity used, the carbon emissions and other components that contribute to ozone depletion. Money Origami There’s nothing more creative than using currency to craft creations with this money origami collection by Won Park. Won Park is an artist hailing from Honolulu and his simple concept of using money instead of regular paper to fold origami pieces really shows his outside-the-box approach to art. Park’s attention to detail is second to none as he carefully picks out the appropriate-colored currency to correspond with the pieces he’s making. The results pretty much speak for themselves! Why it is Cool? Despite this collection of Won Park being something that can be criticized because of the use of real money in this huge crisis’ moment that we’re living in, anyway it’s still a curious work. It can also be a way of giving a new meaning to money, like in this work for example, crafting with it a fantastic origamic work. This project is very creative and it’s impressive the attention to detail explored by the artist. Park has also small projects in which he crafts his origamis creations accordingly with the origin of the bill. For example, to craft the Eiffel Tower he used french franc (the old French currency) or more up-to-date he now uses the euro. The results are great!

Island Flavor Urban Tees

The Stussy store in Honolulu brought out the vibes of Hawaii with the new Stussy Aloha Oxford Collection. Normally, the idea of a Hawaiian-inspired fashion line conjures up the image of flashy, vibrant shirts with silhouettes of palm trees everywhere, but the Stussy Aloha Oxford Collection doesn't play up to the stereotypes. Instead, the brand showcases two different one-tone button-up shirts with patterns embedded on the inside of the sleeve. The series also includes tees with graphic images of palm trees and a hula dancer, as well as tote bags by Bik Pine Workshop. Why it is Cool? When we see something Hawaiian-inspired are always very colorful, with palm trees, flashy pieces that we connect with the sun, the beach and the heat.
