One of the most fashions that keeps coming back from the past is the oversized knit sweater. This look has come back into style autumn after autumn. The sweaters usually fall slightly past the hips and are made of different colored yarn. The seams where the shoulder and the arm are connected usually hangs of the shoulder. One of the ways I’ve seen the sweater worn recently is with the excess sleeve rolled at the wrist. They are typically worn with feminine acessories like jewelry, handbags, scarves, and hats, skinny legged pants or leggings and with any type of shoe.

These oversized sweaters are cut in a shapeless, masculine form which originated in the 1920’s when fashion shifted from tight, confining clothing to relaxed, comfortably fit garments. The knitted fabric also became popular for the first time for men, women, and children in the 1920’s in sportswear and high fashion like Coco Chanel. With the 1

masculine drapery of these garments women would wear feminine acessories which is still part of the trend today. While the fit and the fabrics are similar then and now, the necklines have changed. In the past sweaters tended to have a turtle neck or high neckline whereas now they often have a scoop neck or a v-neck cut. The patterns have also modernized over time. Geometric shapes and lines have become popular, along with tribal prints and a wide variation of colors. When knitted oversized sweaters first became in the 1920’s the popular colors were neutral, mainly white when it came to sportswear.
