Only Human The human figure is omnipresent in photography. It is the subject that is a mirror to the viewer. The viewer seeking recognition or acknowledgment, but often finding rejection.

A confrontational approach to life in all its aspects : birth, beauty, love, murder, death.

A chaotic image of life in pictures from different periods and styles: portraits, nudes and documentary.

This Short Photo Story focuses on the work of the Canadian photographer Gabrielle de Montmollin.

In a short series she tells a story set in an imaginary world populated by mutilated dolls, each of them metaphors for the human condition.

Women en femininity play an important role in her work which in itself is very experimental and highly provocative.

Short Photo Sories Remember the photo novel? This fascinating narrative genre used to be very popular.

A short story consisting of photos and text balloons (Fumetti). It is this genre that inspired us for seven short exhibitions in 2013. No classic stories but thematic exhibitions : we provide the captions, the viewer provides the text balloons.

Each Short Photo Story is in itself and is not a sequel to another exhibition but together they give a very good impression of the visual expressive power of photography.

Gabrielle de Montmollin Artist Statement In my photographs I try to suggest interior states which are mirrored in conditions in the world around us. These are some elements which are central to my work: Dolls I use dolls as stand-ins for real people because of their power of allusion.

From the earliest times humans have believed that souls or spirits existed in every object. From this, it was a small jump of intuition to think that if you fashioned a human-like object it could possess the soul of ancestors or beings with supernatural powers who might act on your behalf. The mystical belief in the power of effigies continues to this day. Modern dolls, made of plastic, and manufactured by the millions can cast a similar spell.

It is easy to think that they possess lives of their own and are the repositories of unknown consciousness.

A child playing with a doll attributes a personality to it. A child’s play is often subversive and perverse. I approach dolls in the same way. In our society these figures are loaded with meaning. Those meanings are always in the back of my mind, but the figures are also personalities who exist primarily as players in the mysteries I am exploring.

Animals and Masks Animals are part of our world, we are all aware of them in different ways and yet we can never truly know what they are thinking. Animals fascinate me because their representation so easily suggests duality. Duality is unsettling, mysterious and present in all of us. The use of masks in my photographs also represents what is hidden and can never be known, and reinforces the sense of strangeness, ambivalence and latent alienation.

Objects An important element of my work has been the use of discarded, thrownaway dolls and toys which I buy in thrift stores. Recently I introduced precious, valued objects to mix in with my company of throwaways.

Objects have secret lives which we can only guess at and treasured things have a great power to evoke feelings beyond themselves into other worlds.

My art is based on imagination; I am interested in storytelling, play and mystery. The ‘meaning’ of my images is never set, I invite viewers to discover their own narratives within each picture and those stories are just as definitive as the narratives in my mind when I am making the photographs. © Gabrielle de Montmollin, 2009

Edward J. Steichen (March 27, 1879 – March 25, 1973) was an American photographer, painter, and art gallery and museum curator. He was the most frequently featured photographer in Alfred Stieglitz' groundbreaking magazine Camera Work during its run from 1903 to 1917. Steichen also contributed the logo design and a custom typeface to the magazine. In partnership with Stieglitz, Steichen opened the "Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession", which was eventually known as 291, after its address.

Specialized in portrait- and advertisingphotography. The mastery of his trade goes hand in hand in his work with a high degree of psychological depth. For that reason he belongs to the most important Belgian portraitphotographers.

Rousseau was of Walloon heritage and descended from a line of stonemasons. He began carving stone at age 11, working at the site of the Law Courts of Brussels, designed by architect Joseph Poelaert. He later apprenticed under sculptor Georges Houtstont, and took classes at the AcadĂŠmie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.

František Drtikol Portrait, (id 5144,0) 1927, Czech Republic Vintage silver print, Excellent 10,7 (13,7) X 7,8 (8,6) cm 850,0 Euro František Drtikol (3 March 1883, Příbram – 13 January 1961, Prague) was a Czech photographer of international renown.

He is especially known for his characteristically epic photographs, often nudes and portraits.

From 1907 to 1910 he had his own studio, until 1935 he operated an important portrait photostudio in Prague on the fourth floor of one of Prague's remarkable buildings, a Baroque corner house at 9 Vodičkova, now demolished.

Jaroslav Rössler, an important avant-garde photographer, was one of his pupils. Drtikol made many portraits of very important people.

Annan and Sons of Glasgow, Hamilton and Edinburgh, and in 1883 went to Vienna to learn the process of photogravure from the inventor, Karel Klíč. Henri Martinie Cecil Georges-Bazile, (id 2074,0) 1925, France Vintage silver print, Good 17 X 13 cm 250,0 Euro Cecil Georges-Bazile was the translator of Oscar Wilde Henri Martinie's (1881-1963) short photographic career focused on the literary world of his days. From his studio in rue de Penthievre in Paris, he produced an exceptional portrait collection of over 15,000 negatives, mainly French writers. He photographed the literary avant-garde of the mid-twenties to the early forties including portraits of Philippe Soupault, Georges Bernanos, Jean Cocteau and Paul Eluard.

Henri Martinie Massimo Bontempelli, (id 2083,0) 1931, France Vintage silver print, Good 20 X 13 cm 250,0 Euro Bontempelli graduated from the University of Torino in 1903.

He taught elementary school for seven years, doing his writing on the side, but abandoned teaching for journalism when he could not secure a position at a secondary school.

He served as a war correspondent during WWI. After the war, he settled in Milan and became interested in the literary styles of futurism and magical realism. In 1926, he, along with Curzio Malaparte, founded the journal "900". James Joyce, Max Jacob, and Rainer Maria Rilke sat on the editorial committee and Virginia Woolf and Blaise Cendrars were among the contributors.

During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Bontempelli was an active fascist. After years of declining health, Bontempelli died in Rome in 1960.

A leader of the Radical Party, he played a central role in politics after 1870.

Clemenceau served as the Prime Minister of France from 1906 to 1909, and again from 1917 to 1920. He was one of the principal architects of the Treaty of Versailles at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. Nicknamed "Père la Victoire" (Father Victory) or "Le Tigre" (The Tiger), he took a very harsh position against defeated Germany and won agreement on Germany's payment of large sums for reparations.

Unknown photographer Paul Reynaud (10 photos), (id 5173,0) 1931 - 1938, France Vintage silver print, Very Good 8,7 X 12,1 cm 250,0 Euro Paul Reynaud (French 15 October 1878 – 21 September 1966) was a French politician and lawyer prominent in the interwar period, noted for his stances on economic liberalism and militant opposition to Germany. He was the penultimate Prime Minister of the Third Republic and vice-president of the Democratic Republican Alliance center-right party.

Refusing to participate in the Vichy government, he resigned and was arrested in June 1940 by Philippe Petain's administration. First held at Fort du Portalet, Reynaud was transferred to German custody in 1942 and held in Germany until the end of the war. Elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1946, he became a prominent figure again in French political life, serving in several cabinet positions. He favoured a United States of Europe. He participated in drafting the constitution for the Fifth Republic and resigned from government in 1962.

Frédéric Boutet fit ses études au Lycée Janson de Sailly, il débuta à vingt ans à peine dans la littérature par la publication d’un volume de contes : Drames baroques et mélancoliques qui suscita de bienveillantes critiques où il fut comparé à Edgar Poë.

Il collabora à de grands quotidiens et hebdomadaires et publia de nombreux contes et chroniques ainsi que des romans qui lui valurent la faveur du grand public en raison de son imagination féconde, son sens aigu de l’observation, sa merveilleuse psychologie et l’élégance et la pureté de son style.

He believed that the value of labor was the development of the worker, not production or earnings.

In 1898 he and his mother left America and worked for a time in London, Berlin, Athens, and Paris. Duncan's theory of movement led him to work particularly closely with his sister

Alban Fashion photo, (id 4928,0) 29/07/1938, Belgium Vintage silver print, Very Good 29,8 X 24 cm 850,0 Euro Aram Alban was born on July 30, 1883 in Constantinople, Turkey. His parents were Armenian, but Alban was raised and educated in Constantinople and Cairo. From about 1922 to 1933, he maintained studios in Brussels and Cairo. About 1925, Alban moved to Paris. The studio focused on fashion, portraits and publicity, but also made modernist nudes.

Alban exhibited at the XXVe Salon International D'Art Photographique de Paris 1930, Societe Francaise de Photographie and at the 1932 Bruxelles' Internationale de la Photographie. He had several of his photographs published in the art photography magazines of the period, including the influential Photographie magazine and Paris-Magazine.

He died in Cairo on March 4, 1961.

We have been searching for a shipping method which guarantees the best security at the most interesting cost. We have the best experiences with Registered Mail by the Belgian Post.

All photographs are available for inspection on our premises by appointment, or at your location through special arrangement.

The availability of photographs is subject to prior sale. All prices are subject to change without notice.

All photographs are returnable within seven (7) days of their delivery date, packed carefully in the same packing material in which they were received and insured for their full value.

All prices are in Euro and do not include shipping. Payment is required in Euro either by PayPal or by Direct Bank Transfer. All transactions are confidential and, unless specifically authorized, credit card details are deleted from our records when transactions are complete. Items will be dispatched following payment authorization. Order acknowledgments and invoices will be e-mailed unless an alternative is requested. A "no quidable" refund (minus shipping charges) is offered for items safely returned within seven days of receipt.

Payment must be made in Euro, payable in a Belgian bank. Institutions will be invoiced net thirty (30) days. In such cases, shipping charges will appear as a separate amount on the invoices.

Foreign orders are sent by registered mail, unless otherwise specified by prior arrangement. Foreign shipments are subject to the customs regulations of the country to which they are sent. AnamorFose is not responsible for any violation of these regulations, nor for securing import licenses. It is the responsibility of the buyer to handle any customs questions or to settle any official actions taken as a result of an attempt to deliver the purchases.

Belgian sales tax of 6% will be collected where applicable. European residents holding valid tax exempt numbers should include these numbers on their orders.
