Essays Our Trip to Gibraltar. Groups 1ยบ Bach. A & B 2007/08
Gibraltar is a small English territory located in the bay of Ageciras. Gibraltar was occupied in 1704 by the English army to help Carlos III in the Succession War of Spain, as a reward they were given the Rock.
In spite of being in the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar looks like an English town and shows the typical red telephone boxes that you can find in England, the royal mail with the red mail boxes, and even they use the English pound combined with the euro.
Monkeys are definitely the most famous aspect of Gibraltar . They live in the mountain, these monkeys are very protected by the law and are the best attraction for tourists.
Looking back to the city we see the structure of the street as shown in the main street, it is full of shops of clothes, food, electronic and of course, souvenirs. The main street leads to other smaller streets with houses and other shops. In Gibraltar there are some interesting buildings like the glass museum, the two churches (one Catholic and one Protestant), the synagogue and the museum of Gibraltar.
Gibraltar was also a military fort and you can see the old canons spread along the fort wall, there are 100 canons in Gibraltar, and some of them are only used to decorate the city and they are becoming a local army symbol.
Gibraltar has a big port too. Sometimes it has tied up a nuclear submarine that has created controversy, and an international airport that connects Gibraltar with London and Madrid.

When I travelled to Gibraltar, I found different things between Spain and U.K. The first thing that I found was the bus, because in Spain they have different colours and only one floor but in UK the buses are red with two floors. The second thing that I found was the post, because it has different colours too. In Spain they are yellow and in the UK they are red.
The third thing that I found was the telephone. The typical telephone is red in UK.
Another thing that I liked when I went to Gibraltar was the lighthouse, because it is very big and white and it has two red lines.
The registers are yellow and it has different letters. The sings are sometimes in English In the Rock, “Peñon”, there are monkeys but they are thieves because they steal tourists’ food. You can have photos taken with them. The bus to arrive at the top is small and sometimes the monkeys climb up into the busses, for that reason it is forbidden to take out your hands. Aida C. 1Bach A

Gibraltar, even though it’s located in the Iberian
Peninsula, it still has British customs.
To start, when you arrive at Gibraltar, there’s a huge airport where cars can drive and people can walk to the city. When you go into the main town, you can find all different things, like call boxes,
which are bright red, the buses that aren’t like the ones we have here,
Even the zebra crossings are strange and different!
The bins are also different, they are big and black, the traffic lights aren’t very big and they are much smaller than the ones here in Spain.
Althongh it is far from England, they use the same
currency. As they don’t charge V.A.I you can get cheaper products such as, gas,
chocolate, tobacco...
They have a huge Rock, where monkeys live, we don’t know where they come from.
The way of speaking is very peculiar, mixing English and Spanish (Spaniglish).

I’ve been to London before and Gibraltar brought some of those memories back for me.It was a great experience, somewhere so close but so different, it’s a place that I will definetely visit again. The only strange thing about Gibraltar was that it had a strange smell, some sort of pollution problem probaby or perhaps it’s because they use the water from the sea and just take the salt out... The monkeys are fascinating, a great idea too, the fact that they are loose makes it more exiting. Obviously it’s very similar to England on the way they live there, the best thing I remember are the call boxes, they were cool! It’s just a shame that it’s so expensive there, I didn’t know this is like that but some things are worth it, like the Cadbyry’s chocolate. It’s funny when they talk in English and mix it with Spanish, it’s actually a great way to learn too. All the boats on the port were quite impressive also most of them were comercial bringing things from England to Gibraltar. The tour was a great idea for people like me whom have never been before, it was a great day out and a I will definetely go again!
