AGE-FRIENDLY NEWSLETTER, ANTRIM AND NEWTOWNABBEY

Introduction
Welcome to the spring edition of ‘News for You’. The days are getting brighter and the flowers are bursting into bloom. This spring, I am thrilled to share a wonderful array of friendly groups across the Borough that are ready to welcome you. Whether you are looking to meet new friends, learn something new, or simply enjoy good company, there is something for everyone! In addition, do not miss our exciting Meet the Team feature, designed to inspire and encourage you to get active and make the most of this vibrant season. Our goal is to work in partnership to help make Antrim and Newtownabbey a place where people can live full, active, valued and healthy lives.
Having accessible buildings and walkable spaces in Antrim and Newtownabbey is key to increasing the accessibility of our Borough. In a
bid to do this, Take a Seat Antrim and Newtownabbey launched on 7 January 2025 as a pilot scheme in Ballyclare and Crumlin. Read more about the initiative on page 8.
Lastly, if your group is interested in intergenerational projects to help build respect and inclusion between generations, turn to page 11 to find out more.
Remember, if you have any queries relating to Age-Friendly please visit the ‘Ask the Age-Friendly Officer’ tab on the website where you will find an enquiry box to submit your questions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Meet the Team
Antrim
and Newtownabbey
Borough Council, Leisure Team, Health Intervention Officers
Tell us about your team
Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has three Health Intervention Officers working across the Borough to improve health, fitness and wellbeing. The team runs programmes that can help stabilise, manage and improve your condition alongside giving you the tools to help yourself. As well as your physical health, the programmes can also improve your mental health and wellbeing.
What classes do the Health Intervention Officers have to offer?
Our programme of classes is varied. We run specific classes targeting pulmonary, cardiac, mental health and cancer. Another programme running is Strength and Balance, a free 10-week programme for people who are at risk of falling. The Live Long programme is also running in each leisure centre across the Borough for those 50 years and over. The Live Long programme runs for two hours
and offers a menu of activities including gym-based sessions, table tennis, squash, access to the driving range and a lightbased exercise class. Finally, the Health Intervention Officers participate in health fairs offering blood pressure checks and BMI testing.
How can people get involved in the classes and programmes mentioned above?
Your GP can make a referral through the Physical Activity Referral Scheme (PARS) to some of the programmes mentioned above. This gives you a 12-week free membership to access our leisure centres, alongside an assessment from the team and a tailored programme that can support the condition with which you have been diagnosed. Alternatively, you can become a member of our leisure centres by contacting the MORE team on the details below, concession rates apply. There is also a pay as you go option for payment.

Take A Break, Take A Seat
In Antrim and Newtownabbey
Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is proud to announce the launch of the ‘Take a Seat’ campaign, a new initiative aimed at creating a more Age-Friendly Borough. The campaign is set to make local towns more accessible, giving residents more freedom and confidence to move around their surroundings.
The initiative encourages local businesses and community facilities to offer a seat to anyone who may need to rest while shopping or passing by. Participating locations will display branded stickers on their doors or windows, signalling their support. Importantly, those who take a seat are under no obligation to make a purchase or use the services offered by the business.
The campaign is currently being piloted in Crumlin and Ballyclare, with plans to expand across the Borough throughout 2025. The pilot will help refine the programme and gather feedback to ensure its success as it grows.

Generations Unite To Spread Christmas Cheer
An important part of Age-Friendly Antrim and Newtownabbey focuses on making people of all ages feel respected and included within the communities in which they live. It is vital for younger and older generations to respect each other. Intergenerational work is one way we can foster and grow relationships.
Intergenerational activities are social engagements and interactions bringing together generations for a common purpose. The activities help build respect for what each age group brings to its community. Nowadays, we are living longer in a busier society, often making it harder for generations to connect. Participating in these activities challenges ageism, builds real relationships and facilitates conversation with people of all ages.

In December 2024, we were delighted to facilitate the organisation of intergenerational card-making and a sing-a-long. The service users from Inniscoole Day Centre and pupils from Rathcoole Primary School met to design Christmas Cards and exchange them with each other, enjoy a sweet snack and sing Christmas songs. The morning was full of Christmas cheer with the older participants commenting on how well mannered and talented the children were. They already cannot wait for their next activity together.
If your group would like to participate in an intergenerational activity with a local group and you would like some help to make it happen, register your interest on our website antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk /intergenerational-work or contact Environmental Health T. 028 9034 0160 E. envhealth@ antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk

Have You or Your Family Been Affected By Dementia?
Take Time To Get Involved
Local families affected by Dementia are invited to take part in an awardwinning programme, to help train the healthcare professionals of tomorrow and improve Dementia care.
The Time for Dementia programme, delivered by Alzheimer’s Society, in collaboration with Ulster University, pairs families affected by Dementia with undergraduate healthcare students. Up to three students are paired with one family and visit up to three times per year. The aim of the programme is to better educate students about life with dementia and the challenges that come with it.
Time for Dementia is a fantastic way for the next generation of healthcare professionals to gain first-hand knowledge of what it is like to live with dementia by having ongoing contact with a family living with Dementia. Through the programme there is a chance to share your own experiences, meet new people and contribute towards a better future for people living with Dementia.

Photographed above is the Time for Dementia Programme in action. Students are talking through history and enjoying fresh air in the garden with the family they have been paired with.
If you would like to know more about the programme, or you know someone with Dementia and a family carer who would like to take part, please get in touch by calling Alison Adams on T. 07563 556161 or E. timefordementia@alzheimers.org.uk

Savvy Ways to Cut Your Food Waste
Saving food from the bin is not only beneficial for the environment but it puts more money in our pocket. Follow these savvy tips to save more and waste less.
1. Eat every edible part of the food – you can use the parts of vegetables you would normally dispose of to make stock by simply boiling the peel for 20 minutes and then you can freeze the stock for a later date.
2. Love a list – Make a shopping list during the week and stick to it when shopping. Ensure you plan your meals around products you already have in your house so they get used first.
3. Freeze your 5-a-day – if you have fruit and vegetables you won’t use you could freeze them for later and make them into stewed fruit or a delicious sauce.

Embrace The Joy Of Movement
Being active through walking has numerous benefits. Physically, it can improve circulation, bone strength, and mental wellbeing, while also reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Increasing the amount of daily exercise we do can be as easy as walking to nearby places instead of driving, taking the stairs instead of the lift, or enjoying regular walks with loved ones.
Joining a walking group is another fantastic option to be more active. These groups are open to people of all abilities and offer a wonderful opportunity to stay active and explore together. In addition, there is the added bonus of enjoying the social aspect of walking in a group setting, which can make the experience even more enjoyable and rewarding.
