RIC Ice Hockey Preview
2012-2013
The season that was... The Rhode Island College hockey team got a goal on a beautiful tip from senior captain Greg Dicomitis with just 1:27 to play in the game to tie the score at one before Roger Williams netted the game winner just 22 seconds later ending the Anchormen’s bid for a third consecutive New England Collegiate Hockey Association title. The Anchormen finished 19-8-1 overall last year in the regular season, putting them in second place in the Colonial South Conference, just behind in-state rival Roger Williams, who had only one loss in the season. The Anchormen were the owners of that one loss. With the help of the star first line of Ryan Martins, Mike Young and Anthony Sawaia, the Anchormen made it all the way to the NECHA finals. Also leading the team to the finals were the two members on the team in the 100 points club, Greg Dicomitis and Robert Isabella, both of whom received their 100th point during the season, and were a large part of the scoring. They knew how to find teammates on the ice and got the puck where it needed to be: the back of the net. The Anchormen had two strong players in net, making the necessary saves to keep them near the top of the standing. Starting Goalie Mark Bushy had a 3.64 goals against average and played the majority of games between the pipes. Despite his standing as back up to Bushy, it was Vinny Tudino that was the star, with his first career shut out coming against the undefeated Hawks of Roger Williams. Tudino will be the starting man this season with sophomore Matt Collins backing him up. The playoffs last season started out easy for the Anchormen, hosting their first round
playoff game. Home ice advantage proved to be lucky for the team as they defeated Springfield College with an easy win, and Bushy’s first shut out of the season. Once in New Hampshire for the final two rounds, the Anchormen knew the semi-final game against Worcester Poly Tech would be simple, after beating them both times during the season. But the final game stopped the championship streak of the Anchormen as they lost 2-1 in a tough, physical and close game. This season, the Anchormen have a full roster with 34 players. With this many players, there is more depth with 16 forwards, 12 defensemen and six goalies. “All 16 players are strong and can play any line,” said Assistant Coach Anthony Calcione. Besides being full of depth, the team is small and fast and players are physical for their size, making them aggressive and strong. With a good group of new players and strong returners, the Anchormen hope to make it to the finals again, and this time, come out with another championship.
Who’s missing Senior Captain Greg Dicomitis has graduated, and will prove to be a tough loss for the team. As one of two members of the 100 points club on last year’s team, his quick passing and scoring ability will be missed. The other member of the 100 points club, Robert Isabella, has also graduated. He was a tough player for his size, knew how to look for teammates and racked up the assists all season long. The man between the posts, Mark Bushy, is also no longer with the team. With a goals against average of 3.64, he was the team’s top goal tender.
Who’s back This year’s captain, Mike Young, was on the team’s top line last season, and produced goal after goal in the second half of the season. His linemate, Ryan Martins, is also returning to the team. He had eight goals in the second half of the season, and is on his way to being a member of the 100 point club. Also returning is back up goal tender Vinny Tudino, who will now take over the starting position. He had his first shutout against the nationally ranked Roger Williams.
Who’s new Ryan Huber is one of the new faces on the team. As a defensemen at only 5’10” and 140 pounds, he is extremely physical for his size, and can move the puck well down the ice. With his eyes set on being one of the team’s top goal scorers, Mark Natalizia will be a strong physical presence on the ice. One of the team’s top defense is Marco Scotti, who “hits like a bus” according to his coaches. He is a good two-way player who knows how to move the puck.
by the numbers
11 The number of hat tricks last season for the Anchormen. Five different players recorded hat tricks over the season. Captain Greg Dicomitis had five hat tricks alone. Ryan Martins and Mike Young look to have more hat tricks this season.
4 The number of Anchormen in the 100 points club. Assistant Coach Anthony Calcione, former coach Dan Nadeau and RIC alums Greg Dicomitis and Robert Isabella are all members of this elite group of players. This season, two players are closing in on 100 points, and hope to join these four former Anchormen.
6 The number of games the Anchormen won when on the board first. In their 19 wins this season, the Anchormen had to come from behind in most, proving that they know what to do to win games.

Meet the Coaches Head Coach Chris Gouin This will be Gouin’s ninth consecutive year coaching the Anchormen. In the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons, he guided the team to back-to-back championships and lead team to the finals last season. He hopes to get the team to this point this season, and come out with another championship under his coaching belt. Gouin played hockey for RIC’s in-state rival, Roger Williams University, before he began his coaching career with the Northern Rhode Island Midgets. He coached the team for 18 years. Chris Gouin has been with the team from the beginning, and he has seen it all. He looks forward to a new bunch of athletes, and has the goal of bringing the championship back home.
Assistant Coach Anthony Calcione Anthony “Cal” Calcione will be back for his fifth year has an assistant coach. Before beginning his coaching career, Cal was part of the team for five seasons, where he served as assistant captain, and then captain. He also racked up 114 points in 80 games to join former assistant coach Dan Nadeau in the 100 points club. Not only is Cal a coach, but he serves as a friend to the players and a mentor to them. He is the offensive leader that the team relies on.
