oh so gently, let it out again. And as it did, the flowers in the fields softly swayed.

nsi de the beehive,
the bee offered the nectar
to another bee, who—with a buzz, buzz, buzz— drank it up, every sweet drop. And because the bee drank the nectar, it was not long before, on its tummy, tiny flakes and flecks of honey-perfumed wax appeared. The bee gathered the wax and added it to the honeycomb, where soon it would be filled with honey for the cold winter ahead.

where
the beehive stood. She loved taking care of the bees. She sang a blessing on them as she collected the cappings of wax from the combs, her voice providing the melody while the buzzing of the bees intoned the eison. Singing a prayer of thanksgiving, she gathered the honey from the hives, being careful to leave plenty for the bees to eat. Then, with a final song of benediction, Sister Irene carried her treasure into the monastery and set to work.

she melted and filtered the wax. Carefully she
dipped the candle wicks into the pools of fragrant, golden liquid and watched as it surrounded each wick. Again and again she dipped the wicks until finally after layer upon layer they became smooth, beautiful candles. Amandine Wanert is a French illustrator who currently lives in Paris. She divides her time between children’s books and medical illustration. She enjoyed working on In the Candle’s Glow, capturing the essence of this joyful, lively little girl who can also be contemplative. Amandine especially enjoyed creating the soft, candlelit atmosphere inside the church. The making of this book was an unusually rich experience for her.
