A Year of Accomplishments
IALHA PRESIDENT Julie Alonzo
This issue highlights some of the best of our breed, recognizing their accomplishments at the IALHA National Show, the IALHA YearEnd Awards, and one of our Lifetime Achievement Award winners. Look for the USDF All-Breeds Awards winners and IALHA High Point Winners in Issue 1 of 2014. As you read the articles and admire the photos, I hope you will consider putting your own horse in the spotlight in the coming year. The IALHA High Point program has divisions for horses being shown in open breed competitions, not restricted to USEF/USDF licensed or officially sanctioned events (combined driving, combined training, competitive trail/endurance, hunter/jumper, western pleasure, equitation, 4H, halter, working western, dressage) as well as for those being shown at IALHA events in a variety of divisions (English, Country Pleasure, Hunt Seat, Saddle Seat, Western, Junior Horse, Country Pleasure Driving, Show Pleasure Driving, Halter, Costume, etc.). Nomination only takes a few minutes. Download the form from the IALHA website, fill it out, and send it in, along with your $25 nomination fee, then send in your results by Oct. 4, 2014. It’s also not too early to begin planning to join in the fun at the 2014 National Championship show. This coming year, we will, once again, be returning to the Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth, Texas. In 2015, the National Show will shift to a location somewhere in the eastern part of the United States (the Show Committee will make and announce its selection in early-2014). In 2016, it will be held somewhere in the western part of the country, before moving back to a central location in 2017. The Board of Directors will be evaluating whether this sort of rotation results in increased numbers and diversity of participants at the National show during the three-year rotation. Our members have been asking the Board to I hope you will consider consider rotating the show around the country for many years. Although we are not cerputting your own horse in tain as to whether the change will result in the the spotlight in the hoped-for increase in participation from members in different parts of the country, the coming year. majority of the Board felt it was time to give it a chance. We hope to see you at one of the many events planned for the future! ◗ AM

Huge Thanks to 2013 Nationals Sponsors For show chairperson Amy Star, show manager Dian Seabury, and the many volunteers and staff, preparation was well underway for the first classes to begin on Tuesday morning. Several trips to the local storage unit provided much of the paraphernalia needed for the big show. More than 124 horses, along with their entourages of humans, would soon be arriving, and the office was charged with excitement. The National Championship Show teemed with classes highlighting the versatility of the Andalusian and Lusitano horses, with Dressage, Dressage Sport Horse Breeding In Hand, Working Equitation, Prix Caprilli, Specialty and USEF Halter classes, as well as a full slate of Performance classes. This year, 124 different horses were entered in as many classes. IALHA’s big show offered Opportunity classes, open to all breeds, including Working Equitation, Working Cow Horse, Alta Escuela, Best Spanish Walk, Best Piaffe, Best Passage, Dancing Horse and Liberty classes. These Opportunity classes drew 14 horses of other breeds, including the Quarter Horse, Friesian, Nakota, Miniature and Australian Stock Horse. There was truly something for everyone. Tuesday’s Dressage classes attracted 33 exhibitors and many spectators. The dressage was highlighted by a 73.45 test score at Second Level by the Lusitano Badaro Do Castanheiro, ridden by Pernille Andre. Other standout performances included Spanish stallion, Fiero LFA and owner/rider Mary Claeys performing at Grand Prix, Dawn Metzger and her Corrado M performing Intermediare I, and Icaro XXIV ridden by Shelley Van Den Neste and owned by Martha A. Lott performing a beautiful Second Level Musical Freestyle with a score of 70.6. We were honored to have Debbie Riehl-Rodriguez, a USEF “S” judge, DSHB “R” judge and a member of the

USDF faculty for dressage judge training officiating at our competition. Debbie judged the dressage, Prix Caprilli and Sport Horse Breeding classes. Besides judging dressage, particularly in breed shows, Debbie is a trainer and has trained an Andalusian to a Regional Reserve Championship at Prix St. George. Wednesday, in the John Justin Arena, the Prix Caprilli classes began bright and early. Prix Caprilli is an exciting competition that combines a dressage test and jumping. Doreen Atkinson and Savannah Harrington were standout riders. Following, these fun-to-watch classes were the popular and highly anticipated Spanish Functionality Tests and the USDF Dressage Sporthorse Prospect InHand classes. This year, the IALHA National Show was pleased to again offer Working Equitation Opportunity classes. The Working Dressage Phase was held on Tuesday, and the Ease of Handling Phase II and Speed Phase III were held on Wednesday. Working Equitation was judged by Eng. Joao Ralao Duarte, Portuguese judge and general secretary of the APSL and president of the World Association of Working Equitation. Duarte officiated for the Portuguese Specialty classes as well as the Working Equitation Competition. Hon. Sue Burkman, Kit Calafato, JoAnne Crockett judged the other “Opportunity classes” as well as the IALHA Halter and Performance classes in the Watt Arena. The National and Grand National Championship Halter and Performance classes were judged by a threejudge panel, where placings were based on the combined scores of all judges. The Doma Vaquera classes demonstrate the practical skills of the equine athlete and skilled horse performing movements required in working with cattle and bullfighting. The test may include maneuvers such as gallops from a standing start, skid stops, lateral yielding and canter pirouettes. All entries first enter the arena as a group for a tack and attire inspection, and then return individually to ride the pattern. “Alta Escuela,” or “High School,” also called “Haute Ecole” in French, refers to the advanced collected movements in classical equitation. Required movements include some of the movements we generally know from

upper level dressage, such as passage, pirouette, counter canter and piaffe. For the first time, we offered a Working Cow Horse class, an opportunity class that was judged and run according to NRCHA rule 19.3 Cow Work. Competitors were required to box, fence and circle the cow, with no roping. This was an exciting class to watch, with lots of cheering and support from the crowd. For some, the IALHA Clinics are a highlight of the National Show. This year, we were thrilled to welcome both the Spanish and Portuguese judges as clinicians. Cor. Alberto J. Zapatero Gaton came from Burgos, Spain, and a long history of military and Cria Caballar expertise. He is an acknowledged expert in the functionality and morphology of the P.R.E. and has presented extensively on these topics. Besides judging the Spanish Specialty classes, Cor. Zapatero presented the clinic “Conformation of the P.R.E. Horse.” Eng. Joao Ralao Duarte, besides judging the Portuguese Specialty classes, Working Equitation, and completing on-site APSL Inspections with the help of Sharon Mohr, our APSL Commission president, presented a clinic on “The Ideal Lusitano Horse.” Friday, Phil Silva presented “How to Show DSHB” classes. All clinics were well attended and appreciated. Anna Young, member of the Membership Committee and our new youth coordinator, headed up the IALHA Youth Party. More than 35 youths and parents attended the party in the McPherson Room. Anna announced several new programs for IALHA Youth, including a Sponsorship Program, scholarship, mentoring and fund raising activities. All attending youths (18 and under) came away with an IALHA drawstring backpack and everyone enjoyed the piñata bursting. Saturday’s big highlights were the National Championship Halter and Performance classes and the

Parade of Champions. Top champions showed off their ribbons with many a victory lap around the ring. Be sure to see all the details on the show results in this issue of The Andalusian. The show finale was the Saturday Night Extravaganza. Please join us in a sincere “thank you” to John Rock, who put together an excellent IALHA Show Extravaganza, with Rebecca Algar, Mario Contreras, the Horse Boy Foundation, Rancho Godinez dancing horses, and members of the Medieval Times of Chicago show, to name just a few. For each spectator, there was a favorite act, but no one will forget the skit during which a “thief ” stole Rebecca’s bridle right off her horse, Tornado, and she rode on to perform a beautiful bridle-less cutting display, exemplifying the connection possible between a horse and rider. Special show awards were earned by exhibitors whose names we heard frequently throughout the show. In 2009 we started a new award to recognize our horses’ amazing ability to show in a variety of disciplines. The best score in each division is counted toward the award. The Purebred Versatility Award went to Brillante RDL, exhibited by Nicole Hill and owned by Sherry Holmes and Jan Neeley. Second Place Versatility Award went to Saltador ORO, owned by Gina Hogan and Walter Henslee. The Versatility Award for Half-Andalusian went to Diva G, owned by Karen Rock of Jay Stables, who also won the High Point HalfAndalusian award. The High Point Junior Exhibitor Award was won by Keegan O’Brien showing RA Dulcineya and Diva G, and the High Point Adult Exhibitor was won by Nicole Hill, who presented horses owned by a number of clients. Fugitivo Roy, ridden by Mario Contreras and Juan Huaracha, was the High Point Purebred Horse for owner David Carazzra. Many people commented on the high quality of horses, handling and riding being presented. Behind the scenes, many months and years of breeding, training, conditioning, instruction and grooming go into the preparation of the horses shown at the National show. The results are rewarding for both exhibitors and spectators. This is true, as well, for the preparation and implementation of the show. Show chair Amy Star, with the help of our show manager, Dian Seabury, and some key committee members like Lisa Camp,
Howard Peet, Twila Godinez and Malen Dell as well as non-member volunteers, such as Debra Turner, Melissa Master, Karin Hansen and Amy’s son, Dartanyan, made this show appear seamless and efficient. Hardworking board members, like Julie Alonzo, Joanne Asman, Terrye Branson, Gary Camp, Alex Dees, Sherry McGalliard, Sherry Mohr, Karen Sausman and me, Kay Laake, were instrumental to the many activities throughout the show. Many great volunteers made the show a big success. Dawn Griggs, Dree Ward, Becky Bok, Walter Henslee,

and other exhibitor/volunteers pitched in to make things run smoothly and look great. Terrye Branson stepped in to manage the Sponsorship Program when a replacement volunteer was needed in the last few weeks before the show, creating memorable and valuable goody bags filled with useful and beautifully hand-crafted items. Howard and Erica Peet put the exhibitor bags together and provided support in other tasks that helped the show go so well. Our registry office manager, Robin McCabe, spent several days at the show, working the IALHA merchandise, membership and program booth. This is the first time we’ve involved our employees in person at the show, and it was a great success. Robin was able to meet and assist many members who had only known her previously as one of the friendly voices on the phone at the Birmingham office. Standout IALHA youth volunteers were Katie Berger, who helped award ribbons all day on Tuesday, and Dartanyan Star, who was relentless throughout the week in his efforts to sort and deliver ribbons to the ring personnel – future show chairs in the making. USEF plays a huge role in making our National Championship Show possible. Two essential people include the USEF show steward, Diane Morgan-Stasiak,
and the all-important USDF technical delegate, Carolyn VandenBerg. Memories of the show were frozen in time by Moonfyre Photography, and special packages, including digital photos, are still available. Those who could not be in Ft. Worth had a window to that world through AndalusianWorld.com, with Amber Lentz and Kevin Kidder, a renowned photographer in his own right. A number of farms and businesses took advantage of the online advertising provided by the video streaming company, with more than 26,000 viewers worldwide from 10 different countries, and a large percentage of people watching for the entire duration. Others purchased 2014 Stallion Calendars highlighting the top 12 stallions of this year’s Stallion Service Auction, and show t-shirts beautifully displaying the work of art, Frères d'Âmes “Spirit Brothers” by Elise Genest, which also graced the Show Program. Elise’s work won the IALHA Equine Art Contest, among more than 50 beautiful entries. This year, the Marketing Committee, led by Barbara Price, brought a variety of IALHA-imprinted items, such as shirts, hats, saddle pads and jackets. These items were brought as a test to see which items our members want to see and purchase. They were met with lots of enthusiasm. At least some of these items will be available soon online. The 2013 IALHA Annual General Member Meeting took place on Sunday morning, during which all items submitted to the membership for vote passed by sizable margins. What people are saying
Terry Waechter of Watchman PRE Horses said she enjoyed the Texas hospitality and thought the video streaming added so much to the show. She commented,

“It is always a learning experience to see what other people are doing with their horses.” Board member Sherry McGalliard remarked, “I enjoyed meeting new people and seeing old friends! I very much enjoyed spending time with Ricardo from USPRE and Barb (Clark) from the Foundation for the Pure Spanish Horse. I also enjoyed meeting Kevin Kidder and Amber Lentz. AndalusianWorld.com did an amazing job with the live streaming video feed.” Rebecca Algar shared her thoughts about the show on the new IALHA Exchange page online: “One of the highlights for me was the amazing and unwaveringly helpful and cheerful attitudes of everyone in the office! I know they had to be as exhausted as we were, and I’m sure sick to death of (probably) being asked the same question over and over by different people. But, they were unfailingly polite and helpful, as was the gate steward, who made sure we could get our tack and equipment change done. I love the atmosphere at this show; I have shown so much for so long, in so many places, that I was pretty burned out, until I attended my first IALHA Nationals. Although I barely had time to breathe, and certainly not to eat or sleep for that matter, I just thoroughly enjoyed myself. My fellow competitors are good sports, and whether it’s Erica Peet lacing me into my Polinas or Mario Contreras pretending to be up to no good for my Saturday night freestyle, there is a great camaraderie!” Debra Turner, a volunteer, reflected, “As a complete novice volunteer, I have to say that I liked that the exhibitors were so open to share information about the breeds they obviously love and the patience they showed us at the awards table as we tried to get awards done

quickly and correctly. It was a joyful experience to hand someone their first trophy and to see the sheer joy in having gotten one!” “As an exhibitor, I have to say that both the ringmaster (Susan Palbykin) and gate/paddock master did outstanding jobs,” remarked Joel Staner. Dian Seabury, our level-headed and efficient show manager, said, “Thanks to the competitors and owners who shared their amazingly versatile and beautiful horses with all of us. I enjoyed working with all of you and your horses and hope you all had a successful and fun show.” Finally, show chair Amy Star speaks for all of us when she said, “Your attendance and participation in the show are the crucial elements for its success, and we are honored that you came to celebrate our horses and our friendship.” As always, the competition highlighted the astounding qualities of these horses as spectators and exhibitors alike enjoyed their beauty and versatility. If you were not able to attend the 2013 IALHA National Championship Show, it’s time to start training and preparing for next year’s IALHA National Championships to be held in Ft. Worth, where “wishes are horses,” and dreams can come true. ◗ AM

2013 IALHA
Year End
Awards By Karen Sausman
Professional Horsewoman of the Year: Rebecca Algar
I have ridden horses or ponies since I was 5 years old: racehorses, eventers, jumpers, dressage, Western events. I first met Iberian horses in the ‘70s (giving my age away here), when I purchased a wonderful stallion for my employer. I studied under a scholarship in Spain from 1979 to 1981. I loved everything about the country, the culture, the people and, of course, the beautiful horses. I was an international AQHA and APHA judge for 13 years. I was invited to try out for the USET in reining. I represented the United States on three occasions in cutting. I was an individual and team Gold Medalist on the United Kingdom World Nations Cup team, and I am very proud to say, past coach to Leslie Law, Olympic Gold Medalist in Three-Day Event. Due to my life taking a different route (focusing mostly on cutting horses), I only came back into Iberians in 2009. I can honestly say that I am having more fun than I have had for a long time. I would love to see more youth participation, and I hope working equitation will fire up their enthusiasm. Coaching youths has always been my favorite thing, next to trying to understand how to ride horses. Receiving this award is an amazing honor, and I will do my best to live up to it. Thank you.
Professional Horseman of the Year:
Steven Stiller
My introduction to the world of horses was not one of love at first sight. It all started in 1994, when I was a lazy 10-year-old boy, with a father who wanted to instill the character qualities of a Godly man into his son. Thus, I was launched into the not-so-glamorous world of horse responsibility (stall cleaning). As time went on, these responsibilities developed into privileges. Our employer, Gareth Selwood, offered us riding lessons, and in 1996 helped us get our

first Half-Andalusian. This Azteca gelding changed my view of horses. For some reason, he liked me, and in the end, he won my friendship. In 1997 under the patient training of Mr. Selwood and the help of his assistant at that time, Howard Peet, Raven and I began our show career. That was 16 years ago. Not only did Mr. Selwood help me train and show Raven, he gave me countless opportunities to show his and many others’ horses in the Andalusion/Lusitano and Friesian show circuits. From 2006 to the present, I have been blessed to receive on the local level more than 200 firsts and 152 seconds, and on the national level 52 championships and 41 reserves. All I can say is, thank God and thank you to my parents, Mr. Selwood, and to each one who has entrusted me with their beautiful horses. The value of the many lessons I have learned while working with these beautiful animals and precious people is priceless. Being a Christian, and believing in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I have truly been blessed to experience firsthand the development of a relationship between a person and one of God’s most magnificent creatures, the horse.
Rookie Trainer of the Year:
Nicole Hill
Born and raised on the East Coast, Nicole started riding at the age of 3. She moved to Texas when she was 19 to expand her knowledge, managing various farms specializing in disciplines from endurance to dressage. Nicole fell in love with the Spanish horse while working for a local P.R.E. breeding/training facility. It wasn’t long before she made her debut at IALHA Nationals in 2008, returning the following year to show at the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show with fantastic results. Her initial success was followed by a devastating blow in 2010, when her father was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She voluntarily stepped away from her job and horses to devote every minute to him. This integral piece of her life was lost in 2011, taking with it her passion for everything, including horses. In 2012, Half-Andalusian colt, Real Romance, was purchased, reigniting her love affair with Iberian horses. Later that same year, she opened Suspension Sporthorses LLC in Conroe, Texas, and her dream became a reality. Since opening its doors, the company has purchased five P.R.E. horses to be the future of the breeding program. Suspension Sporthorses markets horses from top breeders across the United States, bringing 1 percent to 2 percent of new IALHA memberships and more than $250,000 in sales this year. Suspension Sporthorses has established itself as a diverse training facility, focusing on the connection between horse and handler.

It is with great appreciation for those essential to present and future success that Nicole and Suspension Sporthorses look toward the future with enthusiasm. Thank you!
Amateur Horsewoman of the Year:
Linda Graham
It is interesting to know that Saul is a shy person, but when he sets foot in a show ring, that all disappears and he is all business, truly enjoying the competition. To top it off, Saul takes pride in knowing that he must be doing a good job, because he has been asked to show other people's horses, and he feels happy that people have that kind of trust in him to present their horses as well. Saul is honored to have been given this award and thanks everyone who has helped him get to where he is today: his wife, Sandra; his ranch manager, Leo; his trainers, Howard and Erica Peet; and all his horsey friends who have shared their knowledge with him.
IALHA Youth of the Year:
The Pin Oak Charity Horse Show’s Andalusian and Lusitano breed chairperson, Linda Graham, rode her first Lusitano in 1987 in Portugal. Today, she is gearing up for the 10th year that Iberian horses have been included at Houston’s historic Open Horse Show. In 2013 Pin Oak raised $200,000 for its children’s charities, and has contributed more than $5.5 million to charity during its 69year run. Graham will add significant prize money to Pin Oak’s 2014 IALHA and Working Equitation Championships to celebrate this anniversary. Graham has been fortunate during her journey to be in the company of charismatic palomino Lusitano stallion Amuleto VO. In 2008 she purchased him at auction in Brazil, and since then has shown him at IALHA Nationals and Pin Oak, where she rode him to IALHA High Point Lusitano in 2012 and 2013. Amuleto VO also captured Pin Oak’s Working Equitation Championship at the Basic level with trainer Tiago Ernesto of Haras Dos Cavaleiros both years. Recently, Linda Graham has embarked on a new venture: Lusitano breeder, standing Amuleto VO at stud and acquiring Bonança Interagro, a chestnut Lusitano mare. “As I work on projects for my advertising and PR clients, I can watch my Lusitano filly playing in her pasture,” Graham said. “It doesn’t get better than that.”
Amateur Horseman of the Year:
Saul Aguayo
Since Katie was able to sit upright, she has wanted to be a passenger on a horse – any horse. However, her love and passion for the horse was defined by the Andalusian. Katie's first IALHA show was the 2006 Nationals, in a lead line class on board Ilustre de la Para. Deeply inspired, the next year, she continued taking lessons with Mario Contreras of MC Horse Training of Chicago. These lessons coincided with the training of Katie's entrance into the Iberian world, Querencia JDE. Together, Katie and Querencia would learn, grow and accomplish so much together: numerous USEF titles, regional championships, national championships and many exhibitions and fairs. This year marks Katie's fourth competing National Show, her second Nationals showing with Jay Stables of Big Rock, Ill., where she holds a working student position. For the last two years, Katie has been learning and showing with John and Karen Rock at IALHA shows around the country aboard the beautiful horses of Jay Stables. This is her second year competing in halter, a part of showing she has really grown to love, and this is her first year competing on a stallion, thanks to Heroe MAC. Katie is looking forward to many more firsts in her equestrian adventure. Thank you to everyone who has been there along the way to help Katie learn and grow as an equestrian.
Volunteer of the Year:
Saul Aguayo was introduced to the Andalusian by some friends and instantly fell in love with the beautiful looks and movement. He and his wife, Sandra, had their first mare, Favorita MA, shown in 2009. That year at Nationals, she won the 2-year-old filly class. Saul sat in the stands that year and dreamed that, one day, he would be able to present his own horse in the show ring. Two years later in 2011, at the National Show, his dream became a reality. What a feeling to be showing off the bond he had with his horse, As De Copas. Together, they won Jr. Stallion, Best Movement, and Show Pleasure Driving Amateur. Being able to drive his horse is especially important, because Saul is unable to ride very much, due to a bad back.

In 1996, I was warmly welcomed into the Andalusian community, when I spent a week visiting breeding farms in California. The graciousness with which I was met at each facility (Gremlan

In the years since, I have met many wonderful people through the IALHA, volunteers who give so freely of their time and energies in promoting the breed and helping to do all the things it takes to keep an organization healthy. I’d like to thank those who nominated me for this honor, while also acknowledging the incredible contributions made by every volunteer who sits on the Board of Directors, Registry Board, Audit Board, and the many IALHA Committees, not to mention those whose contributions are made in person or through sponsorship at the National Show each year, and those who introduce others to the breed and the association through their presence as ambassadors and contributions of articles and photos to The Andalusian magazine. Working together, we truly do contribute to ensuring that the legacy of our noble horses lasts for generations to come.
Purebred Horse of the Year:
Amici BB
Half-Andalusian Horse of the Year:
Diva G
Diva is a Half-Andalusian and Half-Kladruber mare bred by GG Andalusians in Okemos, Mich. Owner Karen Rock purchased her as a 2-year-old in 1992. She has always been a joy to ride and has taken care of her handlers and riders. This mare has completed and been successful in many disciplines. She has been ridden in FEI level dressage, jumping, halter, hunt seat, saddle seat, doma vaquera, and is new to driving. She is used as a schoolmaster for amateurs and youths who need a safe and confidence-building ride. Although her owners have tried many times, Diva is unable to produce a foal. She is the honorary grandma horse and babysitter to all the foals at their farm. In 2012, Diva won USEF Horse of the Year honors and captured eight of the categories nationally recognized. She also was a National Champion in nine classes in Fort Worth. Diva is a great ambassador for the breed, showing the gentle and kind nature of the Andalusian. She is loved by many and continues to bring new admirers to the Andalusian breed.
Breeder of the Year: Amici BB, the 2013 IALHA Purebred Horse of the Year, is no stranger to National Awards. He is only one of four stallions in the 30 years of IALHA National Championships to have won both the title of National Grand Champion Junior Stallion and National Grand Champion Senior Stallion. His book of merits has multiple National Championship Performance Awards under saddle and in driving as well as Open Driving titles. His latest laurels include Region One Champion Show Hack and Cal-Sho Champion Show Hack, during which he was unanimously the choice of the three judges. Amici has appeared in the Whip Magazine, published by the American Driving Society, as an outstanding Carriage Pleasure Driving Horse as well as in their advertisement on Facebook for promoting the Andalusian as a supreme driving horse. Amici is proving himself as a stallion worthy of covering mares by producing outstanding foals. His first filly, Sedona TA, was the Champion Sweepstakes 2-Year-Old Filly at the 2013 Fiesta of the Spanish Horse. He is proudly owned by Nadine Tilley of Tilley Andalusians in Thousand Oaks, Calif., who thanks her trainer, Bill Deeney, for all his hard work and for bringing Amici to this level of excellence. He is proving to be an exceptional representative of our beloved breed. Amici is by Escamillo out of Bregadora.

Rancho del Lago, Judy and Walter Henslee
The Henslees of Rancho Del Lago began their love affair with Andalusians in 1994, with the purchase of an S/P mare from California, breeding her to a son of Genio III. From that beginning, the Henslees, including two of their children, now own about 20 pure- and part-bred Andalusians. They have sold more than 100 horses since 2004 to buyers in 16 states. Their stallions have sired more than 200 foals, and they have supported the IALHA stallion auction, donating multiple breedings. These efforts have resulted in several dozen new IALHA members. Rancho Del Lago horses and offspring of their stallions have garnered about 300 regional and national titles under judges from USEF, USDF, Spain and Portugal. RDL-owned stallions have achieved three IALHA Lifetime Achievement Awards, six USDF Grand Championships and USDF All Breed Awards, and 15 IALHA National Championships in multiple divisions. All RDL breeding stock are IALHA registered. Walter and Judy have served in a variety of offices for IALHA, including vice president, national show chair, show rules committee chair, bylaws committee, show committee and the USEF A/L committee. The Henslees would like to thank their trainers, amateur competitors and clients who helped make this award possible. â—— AM

YO U TH SPORTSMAN
USEF Youth Sportsman of the Year:
Meagan Hansen Each year, the USEF solicits nominees from each of the Official Breed Affiliates and Disciplines for their annual Youth Sportsman award. This year, the IALHA selected Meagan Hansen of Chico, Calif., to be our nominee for this award. In her application, Meagan explained: “I became a Youth member of IALHA in 2012, when I was 16 years old, but I have been interested in horses ever since I was little and the Andalusian breed ever since I first rode Jefe, my aunt’s Azteca gelding, in 2008. After my first ride on Jefe, it became evident to me that there was something special about the Andalusian, and I only grew more interested as the days went by. In 2007, I was the ribbon girl for the Northwest Andalusian Horse Association’s Go for Baroque show. This was the first time I had ever been to an Andalusian horse show. I couldn’t have asked for a better first experience than one during which I got to walk around in a pretty blue dress, handing out trophies and ribbons to the most beautiful breed of horse I had ever seen. Three years ago, I attended my first National-level Andalusian horse show as an assistant volunteer to the in-gate opener and paddock master at the Canadian Nationals. I had no idea how much work being the gate opener required until I tried it for myself, and since then, I try to let every volunteer know that they are appreciated. Meagan Hansen with RL Duquesa, who should be delivering Meagan's Two summers ago, my birthday present from my first foal this spring aunt was the opportunity to compete in the Canadian Nationals. I participated in a few halter classes with Odalisca GF, a P.R.E. mare, and I also entered numerous riding classes with my aunt’s Azteca gelding, Jefe. I came home with one second place, three top fives, and four Reserve National Championships. It wasn’t all about the titles though. The experience of having my first competition at a national show was like a breath of relief. After that, horse shows were not as scary as they once seemed. Needless to say, I was overjoyed with what I was able to take away from the first horse show that I competed in. This past summer, I participated in the Canadian Nationals again, and my aunt and I decided to show three horses that had barely any experience in the horse show setting. During the 2013 Canadian Nationals, I showed RL Duquesa, a Lusitano mare, in halter; CDC Ansia, an SP mare, in halter and under saddle; and CDC Don Quixote de la Mancha, an Azteca Gelding, in halter and under saddle. I was able to enter into more classes this year, because of all of the hard work I put toward improving my skills in the year before the show, when I was entrusted with the care of my aunt’s Azteca gelding throughout my junior year of high school. This time, with a combined effort from three of my four-legged friends and myself, we earned seven top fives, one second place, one first place, and four Reserve National Championships, as well as the High Point Youth award for the show! During the summer, I also got to go to one of the IALHA’s quarterly board meetings in Seattle. At first, being able to give my thoughts to people who could make a difference was intimidating, but I soon found out that the more I said aloud, the more ideas I thought up. I did my best to explain the thoughts and ideas of an IALHA Youth Member, and I hope that I will get to attend many more board meetings in the future. I always enjoy myself when I am talking about something I am passionate about, so it is not difficult to enjoy myself when discussing Andalusians. I love the friendly competition that flows from every new show I attend, and I hope that my show career only expands from here.”
With clear-thinking youths like Meagan, dedicated to the breed, devoted to learning new things, and determined to help out in whatever way they can, the future looks bright, indeed. ◗ AM 40

For the fourth-consecutive year, the Oregon State Fair welcomed the IALHA to the multi-breed, two-week-long and very popular horse show in late-August. This year, in addition to the halter, best movement, and Western and English rail classes that traditionally have been offered, the State Fair also added working equitation. Nine riders signed up for the division, judged by Washington State’s Paula Kierkegaard, who was one of two judges to receive a USEF scholarship to attend the Working Equitation Judge Training Seminar organized by Haras Dos Cavaleiros in March 2013. During the two days our group was at the fair, we fielded questions about the breed from literally thousands of fair goers and helped introduce a new generation of horse lovers to the IALHA. ◗ AM
