GUIDE to SKINCARE
ORDER of APPLICATION I know the order of everything can be confusing which is why I asked a facialist about this a while back. Here’s the order she suggests for your skincare routine, obviously depending on what products you use:
1 2 3 4
CLEANSER. Obviously the first step if you’re cleansing before your skincare routine, but I know some people only cleanse at night (like me!).
TONER. If you use a toner, this is next up and especially helpful with acne-prone and oily skin! Think of it as a thin veil of hydration that’s calming and provides an additional layer of hydration to prep the skin for other products.
EYE CREAM. You’re supposed to apply eye cream earlier in the order so you don’t get too much product on your hands and a sensitive area, but I always forget until the end. This step is all about hydrating the delicate eye area while treating and preventing all the fun things like fine lines, wrinkles and dark circles, as well as preventing collagen loss. I once heard a tip to apply eye cream to everywhere your sunnies would cover, so from under your eye to above your eyebrow and to use your ring finger so you’re extra gentle!
SERUMS/TREATMENTS. This is when you treat and address areas of concern which changes for me by the day. If you’re using multiple serums, make sure you’re using the most active serum first. This allows it to better absorb into the skin before you layer on other products. Vitamin C is a must-have serum for me and most skin typesit’s an anti-aging antioxidant that smoothes the skin’s texture, treats and prevents signs of aging and protects the skin from free radicals. *This is also when most skin tools are used, to really get those serums into the skin!
5 6 7
MOISTURIZER. Next up, moisturizer! If you have dry skin, go for a thick moisturizing cream, but if you have oily skin, try a lighter gel moisturizer.
OILS. If you use them, oils should be after moisturizers since they’re thicker. They’re not that moisturizing on their own, but when you layer them over products, they help seal in all the ingredients and moisture you just applied.
SPF. Technically, SPF should be the absolute last step but I know a lot of times it’s mixed in with a moisturizer. Doing it on top of everything is the best and most efficient way to prevent aging and sun damage, especially hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. SPF should be the last step in your skincare routine because, by nature, it blocks UV rays (and anything else) from absorbing into the skin.
