Dear Readers, Spring comes so slowly to Nantucket and it seems as if the cold of winter lasts too long. However, it is the same every year, yet we tend to forget. Once the daffodils push their tender green leaves up through the earth, we somehow feel as if spring has arrived. Then, one morning we see white, glistening snow surrounding these virgin shoots and we know we have “jumped the gun.” We worry that these spring blossoms will not survive the frost. Remember, they are the heartiest of souls and forge on to the end of April and in to May, to bloom brilliantly. I feel spring flowers are the most welcome of all flowers. They touch my soul as they burst forth in gardens and in woodlands. The purple, yellow and white crocuses are the first to be seen. Grape hyacinth, daffodils and tulips follow shortly. It is a breath of spring to see them in pots and window boxes with stems of pussy willows dotted amongst them. Everything is fresh and new, as if the earth has just birthed its firstborn. Nantucket appreciates and celebrates this new birth with our annual Daffodil Festival. Visitors flock to the island, residents participate in the Daffodil Festival by adorning their antique cars with daffodils for the parade to 'Sconset. Merchants decorate their windows and Mother Nature does her thing too, by dotting the island with hoards of daffodils. The Nantucket Garden Club puts forth an incredible flower show with varieties of daffodils submitted by members and island residents alike. To pass down multiple aisles of daffodils, each grouped by color and identified by name, dutifully by the garden club members, one feels as if they are walking down the aisle of a wedding in fairyland. At least I do. Nothing is done in a perfunctory manner when it comes to this springtime festival. The island abounds with yellow and green magic. Moments spent on the island as nature bursts forth in springtime, will make lasting memories. Come, relax and celebrate springtime. You are sure to revisit once you have experienced it! You will go away from this “Grey Lady” far out at sea with a burst of wonderment to carry you into summertime!
Sincerely,
Deborah Anderson Publisher

SPRITZ OF SPRING
This festive Champagne cocktail is simple, fun and sophisticated. If you don't have a bottle of St-Germain, a tasty elderflower liqueur, already on your bar, now's the time to add one. Choose your bubbles (champagne or Prosecco) to clink in springtime.
Ingredients:
2 ounces elderflower liqueur, preferably St-Germain 2 ounces freshly squeezed lemon juice 8 ounces chilled champagne or Prosecco 2 ounces lemonade 1 sprig lavender slice of fresh lemon
Preparation:
Put all ingredients together in a pitcher and pour into a Champagne flute or a mason jar with ice. If using a mason jar decorate with a daffodil tucked into end of a straw in the drink.
DEVILED EGGS WITH A TWIST Ingredients:
Beet Coloring Liquid: 2 cups beet juice 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1 Tablespoon brown sugar Deviled Egg Spices: mayonnaise mustard (dry or wet) salt and pepper chives
Preparation:
Hard-boil eggs. Chill. Remove eggshells.
Mix all the beet coloring ingredients together. Boil for 1 minute.
Add eggs so that they are totally covered. Leave in solution for 8 hours. Eggs will then have a purple hue to the egg white.
Slice the eggs in half lengthwise, removing yolks into a medium bowl and placing the whites on a serving platter. Mash the yolks into a fine crumble using a fork. Add mayonnaise, mustard (dry or wet), salt, pepper and mix well. Evenly disperse heaping teaspoons of the yolk mixture into the egg white halves. Top with minced chives.

The Soft Side of Roofers by Rebecca Nimerfroh
O
n the island of Nantucket, flower boxes are something of an extreme sport. Whatever the time of year may
be, a casual walk around town will provide one with a front row seat to the meticulous and fabulous handiwork of
our community’s florists, whether it be with yellow daffodils for spring, layers of red, white and blue in the peak of the summer, or lush, heavy greens for the enchanting Christmas stroll. One thing is always for certain, however; for an island made up of gray-shingled homes, there certainly is plenty of color ‌ and now because of Nantucket roofer James Lydon, there is soon to be even more.
31
32
“THEY’LL BE AROUND A LONG TIME.” Having worked as a roofer since he graduated high school, Lydon has established himself on Nantucket as a seasoned professional among the local building community. Specializing in roofs made of slate, copper or wood, the Scituate-born New Englander has been building roofs over Nantucketers’ heads since he first came to the island in 1984. However, it was only fairly recently that Lydon took a look around his workshop, taking inventory of the many sheets of copper stacked on his shelves, and came up with an idea for an alternate use. Never the idle worker, he worked with his longtime friend Chris Cazeault (a fourth generation roofer in Hingham, MA) to learn how to create these copper flower boxes. James uses the same antique, industrial machines as he does for his copper roofs, gutters and flashing. Hence, Nantucket Flower Box Company was born. “Doing roofing, it’s not often I step back and look at a roof and think to myself, ‘That roof looks great and impressive,’ because we’ve done so many of them. But these flower boxes are just a nice product.” Lydon shows me a sample box he has constructed. “It would be nice to see them around town,” he says with a smile. “They’ll be around a long time.” Lydon explains that traditional flower boxes are wooden and prone to rot, but these copper boxes he has created will last indefinitely. Additionally, each box is constructed so that extra water can be stored in the bottom of the box, safely away from the plants, making ease of watering come those busy summer months. Additionally, unlike traditional flower boxes, Lydon says that his copper boxes can be left outside all year long; he simply stores his own in his yard, turned upside-down. Lydon also explains that a reconfiguration of how copper was made in the last 20 years means that these boxes will not turn green with patina – but they will get a rich shade of brown. “On a snowy day when it’s 10 degrees and windy, we come into the shop and make eight or nine flower boxes,” Lydon smiles, standing before two huge, steel machines. Lydon shows how one cuts the copper and how the other bends it. Once all the pieces are cut, the box is formed by soldering the pieces together. Images of flying sparks come to mind, but again this process is antiquated as well, with Lydon using an oldfashioned soldering prong that gets heated by being placed on an open flame provided by a massive burner, the flame itself lit by a steel flint spark. Although Lydon doesn’t mind the hands-on process (he admits he admires the $70,000 computerized machines that do the same thing with no margin of human error), it is clear he does not mind it one bit. In fact, it is a family affair. “My son Chris is just a whiz with the copper,” Lydon says, referring to his 34-year old son who started working with him when he was just 12 years old. “And it gives us something to do on a rainy day!” While Lydon’s copper flower boxes can now be seen on display in the garden section of Bartlett’s Farm or can be ordered by calling James Lydon, Sons & Daughters Roofing & Siding at (508) 221-1333. Our standard-size flower boxes take a 36”insert and start at $275, but custom sizes are additionally available and can be made to fit any insert. Says Lydon, standing beside his shiny creation, “I think they just really make a house. I know I love having them at my home.”

aving a second home on Nantucket is a luxury, one that this family has enjoyed since the 1970s. However, in 2010 they needed to downsize and their son, Zachary Gut, saw that it was a good time to enter the market as a first time home buyer. As lead house hunter, Zach began a search for a new property with potential and fell in love with a neglected, little, beach cottage in Madaket. With stunning private views of the Atlantic Ocean over the pond and a small dock tumbled aside in the reeds, the property immediately felt like a hidden gem, but the 1970s shack needed major work ... the family turned to Nantucket Architecture Group for advice. 57

fter receiving word, from their son on a house that might
suit their needs, they all flew to Nantucket on a cloudy, cold, mid-March day to check it out. While the views were indeed
spectacular, this dream cottage needed a major upgrade and make-over. Enter Nantucket Architect Group with whom the family had worked with before on another property. They gave architect Stephen Theroux their thoughts. The family wanted to open the cottage to the outdoors, to the water and sunshine, while maintaining the integrity and charm of old Madaket. The other plans included installing windows where there weren't any, getting rid of sliding doors and replacing them with French doors to take advantage of the unobstructed views and replace the outside decks with hardwood. Inside, the mindset was to get rid of the tile floor, install oak throughout the cottage and paint them a fog gray. Open up the ceiling in one of the bedrooms to mimic the cathedral ceilings in some of the other rooms accenting the structural elements and hardware. Paint everything white. Decorate and furnish with simplicity in mind. No clutter. Redo all the bathrooms. Put in new appliances in the kitchen would make a huge impact. Then, on to the outside grounds, with a plan, to bring in Marty McGowan from ‘Sconset Gardener. Once all the work was completed, it became the perfect family cottage for the Gut family - parents, their son and his soon-tobe wife. Life changes and so must your original plans. What once was the perfect little cottage, now needed to accommodate a young family and baby who loved coming to the island every weekend. Then, there were the friends who found their way to Nantucket every summer. Back to the drawing board for Nantucket Architecture Group, Frank Daily of Daily Construction and Marty McGowan of ’Sconset Gardener. It was important to the family that the second renovation maintains the character of a Madaket cottage on the beach while respecting the wetland restrictions. Expanding laterally was the only solution. The redo vision never veered far from the original concept: “Elegant simplicity indoors and out was a must, with the ocean

and pond views being the main attraction,” said the owner. The relatively small footprint demanded a consistent use of materials and furnishing throughout. Ultimately, the goal was that “the cottage had to be livable for adults and entertaining and must also welcome children running around,” she emphasized. The final result of the second renovation appears to have been simplistic. However it took many hours of creative thinking and compromises by all parties involved. Walls came down and ceilings were opened up. Common living space expanded, dining space was enhanced. A bathroom with a tub designed for the baby, an ensuite bathroom in the guest room and a new powder room added. Floors in the new wing carried the same gray painted look of the old floors. The old garden shed got its own cathedral ceiling and French door, which opens to the ocean letting ocean breezes come in. New outdoor living space was added, all the time respecting the natural beauty of the location. Marty designed a contemporized allée that leads to an expansive, natural, Nantucket view towards the ocean. Again, they had their perfect cottage.

dreams DO come TRUE
NA N T U CK E T
A
wedding is, first and foremost, a celebration of love between two people. For some, it means a simple ceremony with a Justice of the Peace and a few loved ones in attendance. For others, it
involves an elaborate ceremony and reception. However, no matter where you fall on the wedding spectrum in terms of your personal desires, you’ll want to make sure that the event is memorable for you and your guests. And there is no better place in the world to create lasting memories you’ll cherish forever than right here on Nantucket. While Nantucket can occasionally present some challenges for travel, the reward is more than worth the effort. Whether you want a simple ceremony on the beach or a traditional church wedding bursting with flowers, Nantucket has a venue to fit. And the same is true for both rehearsal dinner and reception sites. Whether you’re after a casual buffet, a formal seated dinner, or something in between, the number and variety of options available to you on Nantucket will ensure that you get the exact level of formality – not to mention amazing culinary experience – that you’re after. Think of your guest list, too. How many people who you’re planning to invite to your wedding have always wanted to visit Nantucket, but just needed an excuse to go? There’s no better reason in the world than to witness your “I Do’s” to make a special trip. In addition to having the honor of attending your wedding, your guests will also be treated to an amazing vacation on one of the world’s premiere vacation destinations. World-class shopping, dining, sightseeing, and other activities abound on Nantucket. So when they’re not otherwise occupied celebrating you and your beloved, your guests can indulge their own pleasures in an idyllic setting. Speaking of excuses to visit the island, did someone mention anniversaries? After the wedding when you’re back home together, you and your new spouse will be able to recall fondly the amazing experience that your wedding was for both you and your guests. However, that’s not all. Once you’ve had the special experience of being married on this island, it’s forever in your blood, and you’ll want to come back year after year to re-capture the magic that made your wedding day the unforgettable event that it was. Relive those memories year after year by returning to your favorite restaurant and staying in your favorite inn. Take it from someone who’s been to more than his fair share of weddings on Nantucket (including his own): Nantucket is simply the best place for a wedding anywhere in the world. Your guests will leave with the fondest of memories of their time on the island, and the day will live in your heart forever. It is a magical place to celebrate the most important day of your life.
