Dear Readers, The ocean is the embodiment of Nantucket Island. It surrounds us, we swim in it, and we smell fragrant salt air. It is part of the lifeblood of the island and the people who live and visit. Nantucket is majestically named, “Grey Lady of the Sea,” whose perfume waifs into your soul without you being aware of its captive spell. When we leave the island we must come back, it’s unavoidable! If this is your first visit, you will find it won’t be your last. I came to the island over four decades ago, thinking I might just stay for a few years – never left! Nantucket has a way of creeping into your heart and soul and you cannot do without her. She is an addiction. She is the woman you cannot forget. She becomes your compass once you know her. Life evolves here in a methodical way on, in or by the sea. Off-season life evolves, of course, at a slower pace. This life at sea began with the whaling industry – it is the core of Nantucket’s history. When here, be sure to visit the Nantucket Whaling Museum and become educated to the vast richness of Nantucket’s whaling days. That era made Nantucket what it now is. Of course, the island does attract people for vacation’s and those that live here year-round have a greater appreciation for just the “vacationland” that it offers. Islanders appreciate the solitude, the quality of life without “outside” noise, distractions and entrapments. No mall, no highway, no fast food chains! No, you must be in love with the simplicity and richness that surrounds you - nature in all its understated grandeur. When I first came to the island as a medical professional, I felt I felt confined on a spec of land that was just 10 feet above sea level. I had a book labeled “Off-Island Musts,” as I was so frustrated when I needed something and could not find it immediately here. No Amazon Prime deliveries back then. Dare I have to be patient and wait! I wrote the necessity in my book for when I would go to “America.” After the first year, I no longer required immediate gratification! I fell into the slower pace of this magical island. She was now under my skin. In her subtle way, she taught me what was important – people, quality of life, nature, simplicity, peace, solitude, to name a few. When here, slow down, look around and see what this “Grey Lady” offers. If you don’t, you will miss her message.

Sincerely,

Deborah Anderson Publisher

A LOVE STORY by ANDREW SPENCER

N

antucket is the sort of place that is synonymous with love. First-time visitors to the island talk about love at first sight, as they are immediately entranced by Nantucket’s natural beauty and historic charm. Spend a single wedding season on the island and you will quickly learn that more than one happy couple has chosen Nantucket as the place to promise their eternal love. And there are even those yearround residents who have found their calling on this little patch of sand, doing what they love and living the dream of never actually working a day in their lives.

31

32

And there are those select few who have hit the amorous trifecta: they fell in love with Nantucket, fell in love on Nantucket, and do what they love as year-round Nantucket residents. Local landscaper Deborah Wilson is one of those lucky souls. “It’s a love story,” Deborah said recently of how she ended up living on Nantucket. Originally, from Ohio, Deborah came to Nantucket to visit some friends some thirty-odd years ago. And stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but she fell in love with the place. “I’m a wash ashore,” she said, “but Nantucket really is home.” But there’s more love to this story. On that fateful visit, wouldn’t you know it; Deborah met the man whom she would eventually marry. Her story is already the stuff of Hollywood legend, but like they say on the TV infomercials, wait, there’s more. Deborah’s professional training is in ornamental horticulture and floriculture, which is a very fancy way of saying that she knows just about everything there is to know about planning and maintaining a beautiful garden. That professional background – Deborah’s other love – led to her starting her own landscaping company in 2000. And with the establishment of Deborah Wilson Garden Services, she’d hit that elusive jackpot of love. However, as anyone who has ever run a business knows, more often than not, the boss is usually stuck in the office handling the administrative end of things. And while she does her fair share of administration duties, running the business out of her home, Deborah prides herself in literally getting her hands dirty. “The hat I wear is part administrative, but I’m also a very hands-on boss,” she said. “I think of myself as the creative and motivational energy behind the name.” That energy and hands-on nature are both present from the initial meeting Deborah has with any potential client. “When I first meet with a client in-person, it’s a lot about getting a feel for each other,” she said. “I want to make sure I am the right person to execute their vision. I want to make sure that I can meet their needs.” And while she is happy to offer suggestions, she remarked that most of her clients have a pretty firm idea of what they’re looking for in their garden.

33

Once the landscaping is designed and installed, of course, the real work begins. After all, that garden isn’t going to weed or maintain itself. Deborah knows that all too well, as she’s right there in the weeds, so to speak. Part of her professional ethos is an understanding of the quirks and peculiarities of a particular garden, and the only way for her to make sure that each specific garden is being taken care of exactly as it should be is for her to be the one seeing it firsthand. “I value the ongoing relationship I have with my clients,” she said. “And I value having an in-person relationship with my clients and their gardens.” As a way of maintaining that level of personal service, Wilson employs a small crew of fewer than six landscapers at any time. “I’m really happy being the size I am,” she said of her crew size. “It allows me to maintain an intimate relationship with my clients and that kind of professional interaction works well for me.” Wilson’s services aren’t limited to garden care, however. “We’re a design and maintenance company,” she explained. “In addition to garden services, we do full-service lawn and hedge care, beds and borders, and window boxes. I’ve got a specific interest in colorful borders and planters.” Clients can custom tailor their services, which includes the option for fully organic services. “It’s all about what the client wants,” Deborah said.

34

35

36

Anybody who’s ever tried to grow anything other than daffodils on Nantucket knows that a newly planted garden is oftentimes nothing more than a dinner buffet for the island’s burgeoning deer population. If that law of nature has you nervous about planting yet another garden this year, rest assured that Deborah has experience in deer-proofing gardens. “I tend to employ a variety of items for deer control,” she explained. Those strategies include plant selection, particular sprays, and physical barriers, all with an eye towards minimizing the impact on both the visual and natural environment, while still discouraging the deer from munching on your garden. Before you start thinking that all of this personalized service from a highly trained expert who takes a personal interest in maintaining your garden will cost you a king’s ransom, you can put those fears to rest. “I can work with just about any budget,” Deborah said. “I have the experience to tailor plans to what the client wants to spend.” So, whether it’s an elaborate spread that rivals Giverny or something more simple, Deborah can work with you and your budget to create and maintain the garden of your dreams. When you’ve reached the level of expertise that Deborah Wilson has achieved, it’s safe to say that you know a few things about flowers. When you’re a writer whose most recent claim to gardening fame is keeping a bamboo plant alive on his desk, it’s safe to say that you can always benefit from gardening advice. So given the chance to ask, I had to find out Deborah’s favorite flowers. I will admit that I expected something typically Nantucket, as in daffodils or hydrangeas. So, you can imagine my surprise when she told me that salvias and digitalis (also known as foxglove) were her favorites. After Googling the names – see above regarding my lack of anything resembling a green thumb – I could see why those topped her list. Deborah Wilson is living that dream life that so many of us envy. She lives on an island that she loves, with the person that she loves, doing what she loves for a living. “I think I can say it’s a very rich life that I’ve been leading for the last thirty years,” she said. Or you can just call it what it really is: a love story on so many levels.

Just for the next minute or two, allow yourself to envision the

following scene. You: breathing in the “new plane smell” (who knew there was such a thing?) as you recline in the seat on which you sit, glancing out your window to look down on the island of Nantucket as your pilot begins the decent to land. The sun shines gloriously on this summer day, and you can just make out specs of people frolicking on the beaches below, both on the sand and in the waves, the glistening water beckoning you to go for a swim just as soon as you can get

to its frothy edge. You promise yourself right then and there that no matter what, you will make time for a swim today.

After all, if you had flown on any of those “regular” airlines, chances are you’d still be in LaGuardia right about now. The strap of your laptop bag digging into your shoulder as you search for a seat at the overcrowded gate, your ears already ringing from the endless barrage of garbled voice-over

announcements that seem to alarm you and the already

stressed swell of fellow summer travelers. Chances are, there might have even been a delay, and this already too-short

weekend getaway would be cut even shorter. And what was your time worth anyway, you ask yourself, paying so much

per night for a fabulous hotel that you won’t set foot foot in

until much too late Friday night, or even worse, Saturday

morning? We’ve all been there, but luckily, you don’t have to ponder these dilemmas much more. You finish that last sip of the crisp, cool white the co-pilot has served you just before

takeoff, and as the plane smoothly touches down onto blue

ACK tarmac, you glance at your watch, happy to discover you still have nearly a full day of island time to enjoy. This, my friends, is no longer a lifestyle only reserved for the rich and famous; in fact, the multitude of private and crowd-share flight options now available make flying to

Nantucket easier than ever. “With the right service, you can leave an office building in Manhattan and have your feet in the sand at Cisco in 90 minutes,” says Noah Karberg, Assistant Airport Manager at Nantucket Airport, “and in many cases, these are becoming obtainable at prices comparative to commercial travel.” Think of it as an “Uber of the sky” – the only obstacle to get past being the assumption you can’t afford it. Multiple options exist that enable the savvy traveler to arrive on island in style, from shared charter flights, crowd-sourced seating (meaning the more passengers, the cheaper the seat), private charters, leasing (just like a car), fractional ownership and direct ownership. While some of these are self-explanatory (i.e. direct ownership), there certainly seems to be endless promotions and packages available in terms of shared

charters. In fact, you may surprise yourself in finding a very

competitive price, nearly the same as a commercial flight,

especially when factoring in airport parking, a meal and that precious, invaluable thing called time.

56

57

“TO ME, THE BENEFIT OF PRIVATE AVIATION IS A QUICK AND STRESS FREE EXPERIENCE. A PRIVATE TRAVELER HAS USUALLY REACHED THEIR DESTINATION IN THE TIME A COMMERCIAL TRAVELER HAS GONE THROUGH SECURITY AND REACHED THEIR GATE.”

58

“By choosing us over a commercial flight, passengers save on average two hours of travel time each way,” Julia Takeda, CEO and Founder of Fly Louie says. Fly Louie provides 45-minute long shared charter flights departing from White Plains, NY to Nantucket on a daily basis throughout the summer, and tickets start as low as $295. Perks include goody-bags for first time fliers, complimentary beer or wine and snacks, all while enjoying the comfort of a leather seat in one of their gorgeously well-appointed, twin-engine turboprops. Passengers flying with Tradewind Aviation, servicing Nantucket with over 25 flights per day from White Plains, NY and Teterboro Airports enjoy free valet service at their private jet terminals, no fee for checked bags, and no TSA checkpoint delays.

“Passengers may arrive just 20 minutes before

departure,” Vice President David Zipkin says, adding that discounts are available when purchasing a book of 10 tickets or more. The best part? These tickets are interchangeable with family and friends. In addition, for our friendly Manhattanites, FLY BLADE offers ten-minute helicopter rides from their East 34th Street lounge to their Westchester Airport private terminal, where, immediately upon arrival, passengers are then transferred to an awaiting PC-12 aircraft that will depart immediately upon boarding. Additionally, FLY BLADE provides a convenient mobile application for purchasing flights. “If no scheduled times work for the customer, he or she can choose to crowd-source their own flight at a more convenient time, allowing them to advertise and sell their remaining seats to BLADE’s 150,000 member community,” says FLY BLADE’s Joelle Quinn.

Moreover, this first class service certainly doesn’t end upon arrival on Nantucket. “There is almost a concierge level service,” Noah says of Nantucket’s private jet terminal, with complimentary coffee, snacks, and newspapers made available to travelers, along with employees who will recognize you by face and name. Transportation can be arranged, Noah explains, so that you can deplane from your private jet and get directly into your black car waiting planeside upon your arrival, “like a boss,” he says with a smile. He continues, saying, “To me, the benefit of private aviation is a quick and stress free experience. A private traveler has usually reached their destination in the time a commercial traveler has gone through security and reached their gate.” Although that is not to say that commercial flights are in anyway bad. Cape Air, one of Nantucket’s favorite airlines services Nantucket year-round with up to 20 flights a day come summer, navigating with ease the busy ACK Airport, an airport that on certain summer days earns the title of the busiest airport in New England. Rectrix, one of the newest options for commercial travel to and from Hyannis, offers a competitive price and a multitude of flights for easy travel on and off island. While there are many, many more options for travel to Nantucket than what was briefly mentioned in this article, one thing is certain; this island may not be so hard to get to anymore. With all this modern convenience at our fingertips, a most important question thus begs an answer, but it is a fun one to solve. After all, it is the most glorious question that only a summer day on Nantucket could beg to ask, and it is this; what ever shall we do with all this extra precious time?

DIRT ROAD,

ARE NAMED, SOME ARE UNNAMED, SOME ARE USED AS A

CUT-THROUGH TO OTHER ROADS. OURS WAS A DEAD END. I WALKED THAT JOB.

SHROUDED IN PRIVET.

ROAD TO MY FIRST LANDSCAPING

THE DIRT WAS MORE LIKE DUST, FINDING ITS WAY IN THROUGH THE TOPS OF MY SNEAKERS, MAKING MY

TOES FEEL GRITTY. RABBITS DARTED INTO CAMOUFLAGED HIDEOUTS. MINDFUL DRIVERS CAREFULLY NAVIGATED POT HOLES AND A NARROW PASSAGE.

WE

EXCHANGED ACTUAL HELLOS, NOT JUST THE WAVE OF A HAND.

ORANGE IS COLOR OF THE DIRT ROADS OF NANTUCKET THAT REMIND US ALL TO SLOW DOWN.

GRAY IS THE CONSERVATIVE QUAKER LIFESTYLE, WHOSE ROOTS REMAIN ON THE ISLAND. GRAY IS A COMMITMENT TO TRADITION. GRAY ARE THE HOUSES, SEASONAL OR YEAR-ROUND, THAT HOLD MEMORIES TOGETHER. THE GREY LADY IS MORE THAN A BEER; IT IS FOLKLORE AND A DESTINATION. WHEN THE ISLAND IS SWALLOWED IN FOG, GRAY IS THE SOUND OF A SINGULAR BUOY BELL RINGING OUT. GRAY IS THE WINTER SKY, THE LULL BEFORE DAFFODILS. GRAY IS THE EARLY MORNING WATER — BEFORE A FISH TUGS THE LINE, GETS HEAVED ONBOARD, IS CLEANED, GRILLED, SAVORED AND REMEMBERED AS ANOTHER GREAT

NANTUCKET DAY.

dreams DO

NA N T UCK ET by ANDREW SPENCER

A

wedding is, first and foremost, a celebration of love between two people. For some, it means a simple ceremony with a Justice of the Peace and a few loved ones in attendance. For others, it

involves an elaborate ceremony and reception. However, no matter where you fall on the wedding spectrum in terms of your personal desires, you’ll want to make sure that the event is memorable for you and your guests. And there is no better place in the world to create lasting memories you’ll cherish forever than right here on Nantucket. While Nantucket can occasionally present some challenges for travel, the reward is more than worth the effort. Whether you want a simple ceremony on the beach or a traditional church wedding bursting with flowers, Nantucket has a venue to fit. And the same is true for both rehearsal dinner and reception sites. Whether you’re after a casual buffet, a formal seated dinner, or something in between, the number and variety of options available to you on Nantucket will ensure that you get the exact level of formality – not to mention amazing culinary experience – that you’re after. Think of your guest list, too. How many people who you’re planning to invite to your wedding have always wanted to visit Nantucket, but just needed an excuse to go? There’s no better reason in the world than to witness your “I Do’s” to make a special trip. In addition to having the honor of attending your wedding, your guests will also be treated to an amazing vacation on one of the world’s premiere vacation destinations. World-class shopping, dining, sightseeing, and other activities abound on Nantucket. So when they’re not otherwise occupied celebrating you and your beloved, your guests can indulge their own pleasures in an idyllic setting. Speaking of excuses to visit the island, did someone mention anniversaries? After the wedding when you’re back home together, you and your new spouse will be able to recall fondly the amazing experience that your wedding was for both you and your guests. However, that’s not all. Once you’ve had the special experience of being married on this island, it’s forever in your blood, and you’ll want to come back year after year to re-capture the magic that made your wedding day the unforgettable event that it was. Relive those memories year after year by returning to your favorite restaurant and staying in your favorite inn. Nantucket is simply the best place for a wedding anywhere in the world. Your guests will leave with the fondest of memories of their time on the island, and the day will live in your heart forever. It is a magical place to celebrate the most important day of your life.
