DAMIEN HIRST SANCTUM
In January 2010 Andipa Gallery had the pleasure to launch a new series of hand-inked works on paper by Damien Hirst, entitled Sanctum. Drawing their inspiration from his renowned ‘Butterfly’ paintings, the works feature intricate and intensely-coloured butterflies in mandala-like forms, akin to richly illuminated stained-glass windows.
These new works are from a small edition of 59, being sold both individually and as a complete suite of six. The process involved in the creation of each work is extremely labourintensive, incorporating the use of up to five individual plates for each impression. Each work has a unique quality through this complex, traditional method of hand-printing, rendering no two works exactly the same.
Each work is signed by the artist in the lower marg in.

In February 2011 Andipa Gallery has the pleasure of launching a selection of unique handinked works on paper by Damien Hirst, entitled Sanctum . In a further development from the editioned original suite of six, the works feature intricate and intensely-coloured butterflies in mandala-like forms, akin to richly illuminated stained-glass windows.
These new works are each Unique Prints, marked ‘UP’ and assigned a Studio Archive Number from Hirst’s studio. The process involved in the creation of each work is extremely labour-intensive, incorporating the use of up to five individual plates for each impression.
Each work is signed by the artist in the lower margin and marked ‘UP’ for Unique Print.

Damien Hirst
Born in Bristol in 1965, Damien Hirst is undoubtedly one of the most important and controversial living artists. In 1988, while still a student at Goldsmiths University, Hirst organised the now famous group exhibition, ‘Freeze’, which has been credited as the launch of the ‘YBAs’ (Young British Artists). Included in an exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in 1992 was Hirst’s “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living“, a tiger shark suspended in formaldehyde encased in a vitrine. This technique, and the meditation on mortality, is a theme carried through much of Hirst’s work. Equally emblematic are Hirst’s series of variably coloured dots, and his butterfly paintings. In 1995 Hirst was awarded the Turner Prize and three years later published his autobiography.
Opening on the same morning as the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy in 2008, an auction of Hirst’s new work at Sotheby’s defied all expectations and raised £111 million, making Hirst the most expensive living artist. Most recently, in what many critics have seen as the artist’s biggest challenge to himself yet, Hirst has retreated from his professional studio to his garden shed to return to the basics of painting oil on canvas.
