Disconnected Islands
How you get there?
Islands made by infrastructur project such as streets, train paths and rivers. Disconnection between the city and the river side.
Scotlands Riverside Museum of Transport. An isolated island between the river and the city side. Almost capped through the transport infrastructur. Hard to reach for pedestrians and cyclists.

Walking trough the city by rain an exciting adventure in all kind of ways.
With the MA students Hadas, Lee, Elena, Hannah, Huan, Jacob and Toby, and our professor Mark Brearley (second on the right) who was leading us during this field trip.
planning failures from the past We visited places where decades ago whole neighbourhoods where demolished and the only thing still visible are the street raster’s. Today Glasgow still tries to clear the failures of highrise housing tower and their missing surroundings by knocking down this buildings.
planning failures for the future School campuses got built out of nowhere away from communities and where children’s live. The schools are as well poor integrated and connected. Glasgow council still beliefs in the traffic schemes of the 60’s and tries to finish and complet an over engineered motorway ring road system. We observed a big barrier and disfunction of place.
planning failures for the future New housing schemes called Harbour Terraces promise success. What we discovered were high density, car orientated developments. It’s like an island within the city. The groundfloor uses are unexcitent and almost inexisting. A community feeling is missing, seems to be doomed.

Where Mile Ender Meet My concept is based on reintroducing ground floor uses with the goal to stimulate and activate the heart of Bridgeton’s Industry. For the Business Centre building I propose a place to meet, eat, drink and relax with big windows and new entrances. On the opposite is a huge wall and backyard. Making an opening and new access door to the backyard creates opportunities for interaction and a venue for a monthly sale market with offers from the local companies and their goods. This would provide an unique way to show Glaswegians what great products they produce every day. The rest of the month it could be a public venue, for concert, charity events, art/sculpture gallery and many other types of event. Toolkit groundfloor activation - public area - big windows - visible and good positioned entrance - tables and benchs outside - bigger walkway - less carspace - bicycle stand - rack - lightings - signs and information - events
Workshops - Market Sale offer - big range of existing goods
