and when i finish architecture school, i want to build. a lot.*
*and when i say build a lot, i don’t just mean a plethora of massive, dark, concrete towers that are out of touch with humanity. i mean the essence of the word on the physical, emotional, spiritual and whatever other level and sense it can have. because when i need to create a building, i am not just creating another mass of bricks with spaces inside. i am building relationships. i am building careers. i am building futures. i am building communities. even when i am building one building, i am building a lot.

Portlands Community Timber Tree Farm Park 2B Design Studio / Independent / August 2012 //

As part of the attempt to revitalize the downtown Portlands area, a community project is proposed where timber trees are grown on site, and harvested for production of furniture and art pieces, and other woodworking products re-sold to the public. Thus, not only is there economic benefit, but a social value is created on the site, where people will get to experience every part of the timber growing, harvesting, and manufacturing process.

Part of Section Underneath Timber Plantation: Showing the variety of program all located on site. Visitors can see the planting of a tree, to the sawing of a tree, to the production of a timber product. Educational resources also on site.

On a contested site in downtown Toronto, this mixed-use development uses its art-orientated program to engage in a richer and more celebrated public life. The complex contains live-work units, retail, a 500-seat theatre, productions house facilites, a public park, and a residential tower with amenities for 1BD, 2BD, 3BD, and Bachelor pads.
On a typical day, the site allows various forms of traffic; pedestrians, bikes, cars.
View into open park from ground-level of neghbouring condominium.
Retractable bollards and a pedestrian-friendly paving accomodate special artistic installations (i.e. Nuit Blanche “street takeover�).
The possibility of an intimate concert sheltered from the surrounding high profile streets (Wellesley, Younge and Bay).
This same urban strategy allows for a large number of people to be in a fairly intimate outdoor concert (provided by surrounding buildings).

Public Art, Heritage, Wayfinding:
Innovation: This is not a conventional “suburban development” and it is expected to favour and attract a very urban lifestyle, focused on transit and active transportation. It has a lot of innovation including very strong public realm, a compact cultural-educational complex on a very small site; extensive use of “alternative development standards” (ADS) resulting in narrow streets; reduced setbacks favouring pedestrians.
Mount Pleasant Village
A New Transit-Oriented Neighbourhood Emerging in Brampton
Introduction:
A new kind of development is being built on the outskirts of Brampton, in the Greater Toronto Area. Focused around transit, compact and walkable, with a strong character, Mount Pleasant Village represents the new face of greenfield development in Ontario and is a demonstration of Brampton’s quest for smarter growth and more sustainable and liveable development.
This project has used innovative planning tools such as a design-based block (tertiary) plan, complete with detailed Community Design Guidelines, strong architectural control and new development standards.

Regional and Local Context:
Mount Pleasant acts as a defacto mobility hub connecting inter-regional GO service (rail and bus) with local Brampton local transit.

1B Visual Communications and Building Construction / With partner ZiCheng Xu / April 2010 // PHOTOSHOP CS4, IN-DESIGN CS4, RHINO 4.0 WITH V-RAY
Visual Communications II and Building Construction II, culminated in a joint final project which was also a submission for the annual Structural Steel Educator’s Foundation (SSEF) student competition. This year the theme was curvature and my partner ZiCheng Xu and I submitted a proposal for an outdoor stage on Queens Quay.
