MOUNTAINEER A guide for hiking

HIKING Hiking is the preferred term, in Canada and the USA, for a long, vigorous walk, usually on trails, in the countryside. On the other hand, in the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland, the term walking is used to describe all forms of walking, whether it is a walk in the park or backpacking in the Alps . In New Zealand a long, vigorous walk or hike is called tramping. It is a popular

activity with numerous hiking organizations worldwide, and studies suggest that all forms of walking have health benefits. Hiking can sometimes involves bushwhacking and hiking is sometimes referred to as such. This specifically refers to difficult walking through dense forest, undergrowth, or bushes, where forward progress requires pushing vegetation aside.

BACKPACKING Backpacking is the outdoor recreation of carrying gear on one's back, while hiking for more than a day. It is often but not always an extended journey, and may or may not involve camping outdoors. In North America tenting is common, where simple shelters and mountain huts found widely in Europe are rare. Backpacking as a method of travel is a different activity, which mainly

utilizes public transport during a journey which can last months. Backpacking affords a maximum wilderness experience. Specialized gear allows enthusiasts to both enjoy popular local recreational spots and access the most remote locations.Technological advance and consumer interest in camping have led to lighter and more diverse backpacking gear.

DAY-HIKES

Hiking equipment is the equipment taken on outdoor walking trips. Hiking is usually divided into day hikes and multiple-day hikes, called backpacking, trekking, and walking tours. The nature of a hike is both by the natural environment and the applicable government regulations.

To minimize the impact on the natural environment, many hikers follow the principles of “Leave No Trace.” If you’re a beginner hiker, dayhikes are the way to start building trail skills. Select well marked, maintained trails within easy commuting distance from home. Along with lunch, be sure to carry the hiking ten essentials.

In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous. –Aristotle

Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity. - John Muir

NAVIGATION The navigation GPS are small, multi-function computers designed to collect and display spatial data and assist you in getting from one place to another. It enables the hiker to form a mental picture of the terrain which he or she will be traversing. The Global Positioning System

is a worldwide radio-navigation system that consists of twenty-four satellites and their ground stations, which are owned and operated by the U.S. Department of Defense. The handheld units reviewed here use satellites to triangulate your position to within roughly five meters.

CAMPING Camping may involve sheltering in the open air, a tent, caravan, motorhome, or primitive structure. Luxury may be an element, as in early 20th century African safaris, but including accommodations in fully equipped fixed structures such as high-end sporting camps under the banner of "camping" blurs the line. Camping as a recreational activity became popular among elites in the early 20th century.

With time, it grew more democratic, and varied. Modern participants frequent publicly owned natural resources such as national and state parks, wilderness areas, and commercial campgrounds. Camping is a key part of many youth organizations around the world, such as Scouting, which use it to teach both self-reliance and teamwork.
