THE MANAGER
JOHN SMITH Good afternoon and welcome to Foxcotte Park for what promises to be a fantastic challenge for us all as we have our first competitive home fixture of the new season. Before I look ahead, I must look back on the unfortunate finish to last season that ended early due to the global pandemic. As a club, we were disappointed with the way the season finished after so much hard work both on and off the pitch was in the end in vain. However, we fully understood and supported the reasons behind the early shutdown. It is such a strange time for the world at the moment, and I offer my condolences to everyone to Andover New Street who has lost a loved one or been affected by the pandemic, I also take my hat off to all the NHS staff, volunteers, carers and keyworkers who worked, and continue to work tirelessly. Thank you.

We all know that to continue to keep everyone safe as we can, football has to return with a restricted amount of supporters for now. During the extended pre-season, pre we have been busy recruiting both coaching and playing staff in preparation for the season ahead. Joining the coaching team is Jason Mussellwhite, who gives us an extra dimension that we have been lacking. We have tried to get Jason into the club for awhile and we were all ecstatic when he agreed to join. On the playing front we have a number of new signings – Goalkeeper Sean O’Brien, defender Danny Field, midfield duo Scott Kinge and Connor Thorne and strikers Brett Denham and Kai Sterne. We also have some familiar old faces fac return to the club in the shape of Gary Thorne and Gunner Yates. After a tough pre-season, season, it was great to get the season started last Saturday and even more pleasing to come back from the island with three points. Enjoy today’s game and please continue contin to look after each other.

THE BOARDROOM
JOHN WARD Welcome to my first virtual programme notes. Our guests today, Petersfield Town, started the season with a heavy home defeat to Folland Sports last Saturday and will be keen to get back to winning ways this afternoon. However, we gave a very good account of ourselves in both fixtures last season. We look forward to another exciting contest and hope for the same result today. Our performance last Saturday at Newport IOW was brilliant from start to finish. We had a tough pre-season against some higher divisional sides that gave both the players and managerial team some things to look at and resolve. The amount of work and cost of preparing the ground are quite extraordinary. The clubs volunteers have gone the extra mile to ensure not only the players and officials safety but also you the supporters.
Please ensure you follow the one way system in the Clubhouse and abide by the social distancing guidance posted around the ground. No-one one wants it this way, but surely this way is better than no way. Football is a social sport and is meant to be enjoyed “en masse.” It is about meeting mates, differing opinions, moaning about decisions, officials and players and the joy of victory and sorrow of defeat. It is about bringing the community together, who have one thing in common, their football club. On a more cheerful note we congratulate the Swifts on a promising start to the season with two home victories in their opening fixtures. It was also pleasing to see a couple of the Swift players making their first team debuts last Saturday. Our long term future uture is dependent upon bringing through our own players so well done to both Ally and Charlie. Also well done to the newly formed Ladies side that have won back to back friendly matches including a 3-1 3 win against Division Two side Rushmoor Community last las Sunday. Hope you enjoy the game and thank you for all your magnificent self-sacrificing self support. “Believe Believe you can and you’re halfway there” there – Theodore Roosevelt. Come on the Street!

MATT LOW
Low, who can play as a forward or an attacking midfield player, was a former professional at Lincoln City before joining Lincoln United. A bad injury took him out the game for two seasons, but he has played for Hayling United for the past three years. He signed for the Rams in the summer of 2019 and scored on his debut in the 2-2 2 draw at Laverstock & Ford. He was on target again the next game when he scored the opening goal in the 2-1 1 victory over East Cowes at Love Lane. Low was the top scorer last season with 14 goals from 33 appearances.

Signed from Alton in 2019, Petts had made 28 appearances for the Brewers before returning to Love Lane last season. He made the most appearances for the club during that shortened season with 36 appearances in all competitions and he kept 10 clean sheets. He is a very capable keeper with plenty of experience at Wessex League level. Petts is backed up by Tim Jackson and Jacob Orr.
An experienced defender, defender who joined the club in 2018 having moved into the area. Stephens was as previously with Northern Ireland Championship side PSNI and has also made appearances ances for Ilkeston Town, Shepshed Dynamo, Kempston Rovers and Leighton Town.. An incredibly experienced midfielder having nearly made 200 Wessex appearances. He first started at the Rams in the reserve side for two seasons before breaking into the first team in 2010. Longest serving player at the club, Essai is popular with the Petersfield supporters. His trickery and skills on the left wing make him a handful for any defence to cope with. He was part of the side which won promotion from Wessex Division 1 in 2014 and he appeared for the Rams in the Southern League too.
Signed from Locks Heath this summer, Alford was an instant success at Locks Heath where he scored 14 goals in 22 appearances, he was also made captain of the Hampshire Premier side before moving to the Rams. Prior to playing for Locks Heath, Alford was playing for fellow Hampshire Premier side Fleetlands, where he made 68 appearances over two seasons and scored 32 goals in the process.

Last season the Street were firmly in the promotion places as we entered what we thought was the final 2 months of the season, behind leaders US Portsmouth but with a number of games in hand, which would put us into pole position if we maintained our impressive form. It was that good that we were winners of the League’s “Team of the Month” for January. The trophy was presented before the midweek game against Petersfield and it looked like the curse of winning the award would strike again, however the home side made very much the brighter start with visiting keeper Matt Petts saving at Shane Lock’s
feet in the opening second, but the anticipated goal did not come as Petersfield worked their way in to the game and then took the lead, albeit still rather against the run of play, after twenty minutes. From a free kick, the tall Jordan Geddes rose highest to loop his header over goalkeeper Chris Wing. Worse was to follow for the Street as Beavis collected a second yellow card. New Street juggled their ranks on the re-start with Matt Scott moving in to midfield and, as in the first half, started the brighter. Rusher saw one shot saved and was too high with another before Law broke away only for Wing to save with his legs and Orepo was stopped by a superb tackle by Jake Curtis as the visitors demonstrated they were still in the game. But a mistake after fourteen minutes cost them dearly. A routine long ball was totally missed by a defender and the speedy Luke Hooper raced clear to slot the ball past Petts. Adam Pearson came on for his New Street debut and the game entered the last five minutes with a sharing of the points looking likely, despite a neutral spectator close by insisting that New Street would win and three minutes from time he was proved right. Scott headed the ball down from a free kick and Hooper initially juggled it over his shoulder before turning and lifting it over the keeper. A class goal from a very promising player who then completed his hat trick in stoppage time with another cool finish as the goalkeeper advanced. A sterling performance by the home side and whilst the plaudits go to Hooper the game was otherwise decided in midfield , an area which Petersfield dominated in the first half but became Street’s domain after the break. Street manager John Smith merely contented himself with the announcement that he was delighted with the evening and the three points. Following this result the global pandemic who strike, which would mean that the season was voided and that the Street would have to wait a little longer for promotion to the Wessex Premier.

GOAL? Probably against gainst Andover Town last season, we e had just been pegged back to 1-1 1 and I went forward for a corner and the ball was cleared out then put back in and I was able to win the header at the back post. The celebration wasn’t bad either!

COACHES CORNER
JASON MUSSELLWHITE WHITE Good afternoon and welcome to our first home game of the season. These are my first programme notes for the new season and both myself and JC will look to give you insight from the coach’s perspective this season. Having been out of the game for a few years I was tempted back into football by the club’s structure, ambition and passion for playing football the right way. Joining a management team with a wealth of Wessex League and local football experience was a no brainier for me, their vision to develop the players at the club through quality coaching session’s fits perfectly with my coaching philosophy. Working with Jamie and Thomo on the training ground, we are bringing in professional practices to take the club to the next level, this includes performance analysis thanks to VEO (video footage), psychological techniques and player plans to improve game day performance and player confidence.
I was tempted back into football by the club’s structure, ambition and passion for playing football the right way.
It has been one of the strangest prepre seasons I have ever run, training in small socially distanced bubbles with no contact play definitely posed a challenge for the coaching staff and club. The players adapted well and committed fully to the challenging situation. We focused on the technical side of the game and the quality of our ball work and d movement until a relax in government rules allowed contact play. The managers put in place an extremely challenging pre-season season fixture list which tested the squad physically and mentally, putting them in great shape for the season start on the 5th. We have a great squad at the club that are all keen to learn and improve, and a very strong Swifts squad with a few youngsters knocking at the door of the first team. Our focus now switches to the Wessex Division One campaign and making sure we start in the right ight way. An excellent 2 nil win away at Newport in our opener is just reward for everyone's efforts during preseason. We are hoping to build some momentum and get into that winning habit against Petersfield, they will obviously be looking to bounce back from rom their opening day defeat so we are anticipating a highly competitive game.

STORY OF THE MATCH The Street produced a brilliant performance in an enthralling opening game for the start of the 2020-21 Sydenhams Wessex campaign at Beatrice Avenue. With a number of enforced changes due to unavailability, the Street gave five debuts to the side, with one of those, Ally McCracken started brightly and was rewarded when he followed up a Shane Lock effort that was spilled by Gary Streeter to fire home on 12 minutes. Keeper Sean O’Brien produced a number of crucial saves to preserve his clean-sheet, including an incredible point blank save just after half-time. Then Alex Dockree was red carded for a late tackle and was followed by Newport’s Jacob Reynolds, who retaliated for the challenge. With both sides down to ten men, Shane Lock capped an excellent performance with a close range finish to seal the three points.

PETE TUNNEY Here we go then! After what seemed to be an eternity, we are finally back and playing football again. After a tough pre-season for the players, so much hard work behind the scenes by the back room staff has gone into getting us to this moment. It’s going to be a tough season, but what a journey it’s going to be and hopefully no matter what happens we will all enjoy the ride. Pre-season was tough and so far so good from a medical point of view as we have not picked up any serious injuries. Gary Thorne picked up an injury to his foot that caused severe brusing that ruled him out of the latter part of pre-season and he also missed the Newport IOW game. He is still touch and go for today’s game but it shouldn’t be long until he’s training and getting match fit. Connor Thorne also picked up a strain during pre-season but was back fit for the opening game on the Island. I think Connor will give Gunner Yates competition this

season for Club’s thickest player. Only joking Connor! Finally Kieron Le Brun picked up an impact injury during last Saturday’s game early ea in the first half and was forced to come off. He reported for training on Tuesday and felt no side effects at all. It was noted that it was the first tackle that little Kieron has ever made for the club. Maybe the occasion of it being the season opener got to him. Don’t make a habit of it Kieron! We have also added to our staff, bringing in Vicky Fettes as our physio for the Swifts this season. Welcome Vicky and best of luck looking after Robbie’s lads! We also have a brand new treatment room now available lable to all players at the club. club A massive thank you to all involved in clearing out all the old equipment in the storage room, laying new flooring and cleaning the walls . It just needs a new wall to be added for privacy and a couch in the waiting room. Enjoy today’s game and get ready for a great journey. Up the Street!

WHO?
HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?
Now in their fifth season back in the Wessex Premier after relegation from the Division One South & West in 2016, the Bash will be looking to continue their continued progress up the table since their lowly finishing position of 14th in the 201617 season. Almost at the end of that season manager Tom Prodomo departed for Weymouth. Bashley promoted from within with former assistant manager Paul Morris taking over in the manager’s hot seat for the 2017-18 season.
This will be the Street’s first meeting away at the Bash since the opening match of the 2018-19 19 season, when the Street made their bow in the Premier Division and left the New Forest empty handed with a 2-0 2 defeat with a brace for Harry McGrath, in a match ch that was played in thirty degree heat. Our only other meeting was the return match in March 2019 when the Bash won 3-0 0 at Foxcotte Park thanks to another Harry McGrath goal and two from Daniel Munday.
LATEST FORM
STADIUM – GLEN MEX STADIUM
After a mixed pre-season, Bashley started the season with a home tie in the FA Cup where they demolished Whitchurch United 8-2 thanks to Conor Whiteley, Harry Morgan and Lewis Ross, each with a brace and single strikes for Harry McGrath and Chris Onoufriou. Last Saturday they travelled to Portland and won 2-1 with McGrath and Morgan both on target.
The ground is sits adjacent to a caravan park to the east, a cricket club to the west, a garden centre to the south and fields to the north. The newly named venue has been home to the club since they formed in 1947. With their record attendance atten of 3,500 forr the FA Vase Semi Final match against Emley in March 1988.

LEAGUE LOOK THE LATEST IN SYDENHAMS WESSEX LEAGUE ONE
A good start for Andover Town thanks to the Brothers Pattison. Adam scored one and Tom two to give them a 3-1 win over visitors Fawley for whom Ollie Bradley was on target. Something of a surprise at Downton where the home side, usually so strong at Wick Lane, went down 4-1 to Alton whose away form is often suspect. Tom Moseley scored the Downton goal with Luke Perkins (2), Liam Knight and George Bowerman giving the Brewers an impressive victory. Still in Wiltshire and the highest scoring game in the Division as Laverstock and Ford defeated US Portsmouth by the odd goal in seven. Some familiar names among the goals as well with Chae Sykes (2), Archie Lovegrove and Russell Jones scoring for the home side and James Franklyn, Dec Seiden and Frankie Paige replying. Andover New Street made it a double for Andover as a whole with a 2-0 win in the early kick off on the Island against Newport, courtesy of goals from Ally McCracken and Shane Lock, and Newport’s landlords, East Cowes Vics, also went down meaning all
three Island sides lost. As per last season Vics travelled to Ringwood on the opening day and this time lost 3-1 3 – it was 4-1 last time. It was a case of the Ryans for the home side with Ryan Hamm scoring twice to add to Ryan Osman’s goal after Jimmi Burton had given the visitors the lead. A red letter day for Follands as they scored five for the first time since November 2018 and away from home to boot. Michael Wright and Jordan Sullivan scored for Petersfield but goals from Clayd Roach and James Thomson, who both scored twice, and one from Josh Ball completed the nap hand.
Romsey Town attracted the biggest attendance of the day and rewarded them with a 2-1 1 win over visitors New Milton. Jack Odam and George Callard with the home goals and a Ben Cooper penalty in reply. Lastly another 2-1 1 result – a popular scoreline overall on the day - as Hythe & Dibden got their season off to a good start with a win at Verwood. Edgar Zanin scored for the Potters with Ethan Anders and Craig Kingswell giving the visitors the points.

THE LAST WORD BY EDD PAUL - ADVERTISING EXECUTIVE AT THE NON LEAGUE PAPER
So, where were we? It’s been six long months since the 2019/20 season came to an end which saw most Non-League clubs have their campaigns abandoned with roughly half a dozen weeks remaining.
Below Steps 1 and 2, clubs can allow up to 30 per cent of ground grading capacity at the level. For most teams, this isn’t an issue but league chiefs at Steps 3 and 4 are pushing for the limit to be changed to 30 per cent of ground capacity to benefit the t more wellsupported clubs
Football is on its way back thick and fast now with the preliminary round of the FA Cup taking place today while some leagues are already several fixtures in. Steps 3 and 4 get underway next weekend (19th) while the National League will begin on October 3. There has never been a more challenging time for Non-League clubs and their volunteers, having to implement important Covid-19 regulations and adapt financially.
At this stage, the season getting underway, fingers crossed, won’t be too much of an issue. Bigger problems, perhaps, lie in wait should we experience a second wave of the virus or local areas go into lockdown.
We’ve seen over pre-season how well clubs have managed the situation and it is crucial football, particularly Non-League, can continue to prove it is capable of staging matches safely.
The way this year is going, it wouldn’t be b a surprise to see a disastrous spell of weather over the winter too!
At the time of writing, the National League is still waiting for the green light to admit fans – it is thought they will be allowed to in time for the season’s start.
38
Only time will tell as to whether Non-League Non will have to deal with those challenges but for now we should enjoy being back to what we enjoy most, even if the environment has changed somewhat.
